I live about 10 minutes away from this place and had always been a little skeptical about trying it. After seeing a TikTok influencer recommend it and show what she ordered, it looked really good, so I finally decided to give it a shot. I had been craving something that was light, balanced, and packed with protein, and after reading the reviews, the All Everything Protein Bowl seemed like the perfect choice. I placed my order for pickup, and the first thing I noticed when I walked in was how clean the restaurant smelled. Surprisingly, there wasn't a strong seafood odor at all, which I actually appreciated. Service: picked up my food upon arrival and everything was ready. The All Everything Protein Bowl was fresh, light, and didn't have overpowering flavors. It came with chicken, fish, and shrimp, making it a well-balanced, protein-packed meal. There's plenty of parking and after walking in; I was disappointed since there was no one willing to take orders in person so we were forced to navigate their kiosk menu ordering system. Their system is fairly simple to use, plenty of pictures to show you what each item potentially looks like. But if you're not use to ordering from a kiosk then it can be frustrating. We finally got our order placed and sat until our food was ready (call by name). When our food was ready, everything was there except my salad (only thing they didn't have to cook, LOL). Food was prepared well and plated nicely. I was surprised that my wife ordered her fish fried and not grilled but the fish portion was huge, but she seemed very happy with her food & her sides: brussel sprout and sweet potato fries. My two fish tacos was pretty good the ends of each portion was mostly batter which gave you that crunch sound on the first bite but the tacos was missing something maybe some salsa/hot sauce or a crema. My side: street corn and Caesar salad. Their street corn was on point so I added it to my tacos which gave it more flavor. The salad was nice and refreshing. I did also order their clam chowder which was creamy but after several spoonfuls, the taste of butter was prominent; so I never finish the soup. Came for a quick meal before a Punchline show. Ordered the blackened, seared ahi over brown rice and with asparagus. The photos and website show a nice, thick piece of ahi with a beautiful sear. Fastest HELL NO I've ever written. Over cooked rockfish might have passed for jerky. And what kind of calamari comes out as sticks that look like French fries? Because I must avoid garlic (don't judge, it's a gut issue), I was fortunate that someone from the kitchen was standing by as I tried to choose a side. They had this kiosk/tablet available for placing your orders...very easy to go around the menus to choose the food you want to eat. Absolutely SOLID meal! My family really enjoys CFG and I highly recommend it. Their food is fresh and tasty. It does give "I'm a chain" vibe but don't let that deter you. The young lady with the red hair, I think her name is Maria, made sure our order was perfect, the way we wanted. Now, most people would say my grandma is picky and hard to work with, but she, Maria, made it seem E A S Y. She listened to my grandmas request and was able to get it perfect. We've been coming to California fish grill since they've first opened, and the quality has definitely changed. The rice is like uncle Ben's rice. Definitely not what it was. The fish and the garlic sauce is still good. It's still a great place to eat grilled fish since there's not a lot of restaurants dedicated to fish. Lately my wife has enjoyed their cauliflower rice with miso salmon & zucchini sides. My favorite item has been the shrimp avocado salad. We usually take our food to go & they are cooked fresh there with not too long of a wait. The restaurant is a counter order type restaurant & it is cleaned most of the times. So, the wife and I decide to go to the "California Fish Grill" on a Sunday night, just after the FIFA World Cup game. I checked the time, and the place closed at 9 pm. I thought to myself, hey, you have at least an hour before it closes, so you can stop in and pick up your food. I did just that. Upon arriving, I was given side-eye by a cashier girl who looked unhappy that my wife and I walked in at 8:35 pm, yes, 25 minutes before they closed. Anyone who knows that when you walk into a place, you're usually greeted by cashiers or staff behind the counter, but here, you're greeted by two large kiosks that now take your order. I walked up to one and started my order. The menu was quite large and took some time to navigate. I spent about 5 minutes placing my order, then my wife's turn came. When it was her turn, the kiosk shut down completely on us. An Asian couple with their daughter, who was standing on the other kiosk, looked just as puzzled because our order was wiped clean, and no one offered help. I asked one of the staff, "Hey, this thing shut off on us, and we're trying to complete our order." He looked at me and told me it was because they were closed. I told him, "According to the store hours, you're still open," and he responded, "I'm sorry, I can't help you." At that point, I realized he didn't want to help... no real attitude to assist. I stayed calm and simply asked, "Do you have a manager I can speak with?" Fortunately, he did. A laid-back, understanding manager came out, helped me complete my order, and assisted the couple as well. But the reason for this post is what I expected from the staff, who had to fill the order with only 15 minutes left before closing. I figured I'd get either really bad food or they'd purposely forget something I ordered. I checked the bags before we left, but I didn't check the quality--that's usually pretty good, about 9/10. Still, I was pretty upset because I got third-day-old fish, battered, refried, and served to me. I frequently visit this place and can honestly assess the food quality I'm served. This was a 2/10 experience--totally unacceptable. I feel bad giving such a low rating, but they brought it on themselves. Oh, and the cherry on top before I finish my story, hahaha, was that the total came to $98 and some change, and when I handed the cashier a hundred-dollar bill, she told me, "We don't accept cash over $20." Spent the afternoon shopping nearby at TJMAXX, and it's Taco Tuesday so why not stop by CA Fish Grill for their delicious fresh tacos. We find parking right away, it's free so no hassle there. At register you order on a kiosk or attendant, whichever you prefer. I order from the kiosk bc I've done it before and know how to order with ease. I always get the grilled Cajun shrimp tacos for their Taco Tuesday special. I love shrimp tacos! 8/10 So good. They come with a slaw and a chipotle cream sauce. My bf got the Cajun salmon tacos, he said those were 7/10. With the combos ($10.70 each) include two sides, including premium sides for an up charge. I like the fries and rosemary zucchini. We also chose to add on chips & salsa $1.95 with avocado $1.50 and Mexican street corn $5.95. Added on a drink for $0.50 cents. Ordering from the kiosk was a new experience for me, but it was pretty easy and quick. Even though it was primetime lunch time, the food was ready fairly quickly (well less than 10 minutes). I ordered the Grilled Sockeye salmon salad, with avocado (but skipped the cranberries). My husband had the same, but opposite (no avocado, but with cranberries). We both felt the salmon portions were quite generous. They also provided a bag of lemon slices, which was nice. I didn't find anything special about the salad. I would have preferred more variety than mostly greens, and a choice to have the salad dressing on the side, so I could add as much as I wanted (seemed rather scant to me). My husband enjoyed the salad more (he had the Lime vinaigrette dressing, which perhaps was more flavorful, so didn't feel a lack of dressing), especially liking the walnuts and cranberries. We both felt the tomato bits were a little skimpy. One thing that I didn't catch at the kiosk, but is obvious on their website, is that they grill Atlantic and Sockeye salmon differently. The Sockeye salmon has an asterisk, noting that "This item is served raw/undercooked [...] may increase your risk of food borne illness". Ok. Wish I'd known that ahead of time, as I do prefer my fish fully cooked. I know some feel this is the "proper" way to cook salmon, but to me I'm willing to give up a bit of taste for health safety. Overall, a decent meal and experience, and I appreciate that they offer wild Alaskan salmon as a choice over farmed Atlantic. But next time I'll know to ask that it be "fully cooked". read more
