This is one of my favorite post office locations because it is really big (spans from 32nd to 33rd St), but I HATE the long lines. Seriously, with all that space to process all the mail & packages, you would think everything moves very quickly, but there is almost always a line to have a rep help you. I frequent the machines to purchase stuff, but they don't always allow me to buy the stamps if it is less than $1.00 (painn). When I actually have extra time to wait for a rep, I have found them all to be extremely helpful & kind when processing your order. Many people dine on the steps in the spring & summertime --- this always shocks me because that also means dining w/ the pigeons strutting around next to you (or flying above you and your food). read more

Although the man ahead of me stank of rot, and the woman behind me shouted at invisible people in Russian, the woman at the window was pleasant, helpful, knowledgeable, and funny ... and btw, they're open until like 10pm! i am shocked that i am giving 4 stars for the usps but i gotta give it up cause the customer service was great from the window clerk to the manager who was able to order pre labeled flat rate envelopes for me .the line was moving briskly and my wait was less then 5 minutes which is rare at any post office . the lady window clerk was sooooo nice and kind while handling my 2 packages which i was shipping both to the west coast and she told me what my shipping options were and cost . i had the option to use the self service machine and not deal with the retail window clerks but i decided to give it the human touch and glad i did . read more

I've used this post office only two or so times, but the staff has been really courteous and quick each of those times. However, I'm posting because yesterday they went above and beyond the call of duty, especially a superintendent named Lynne. They found an unusual bird, a whip-poor-will, trapped in their building, and realized it was clearly not where it should be. They called the Wild Bird Fund and eventually a rescuer came to catch the bird. Every single worker I met was concerned, friendly, caring and helpful (and without them, the bird would have been in trouble). Very grateful to them for taking the time to help an animal especially when there's so much else going on in the world. read more

What I love about this place is that it participates with "Operation Santa Claus" during Christmas time!! They go out of their way so that needy NY families can have presents for their kids at Christmas... what's not to love?? The folks who helped me mail out my packages were also super friendly - something I'm not that used to at post offices!! I'm definitely a fan. read more

Beautiful old majestic building, everything you'd think an old school post-office should be. Shame about the location but everything comes around in this city and so will midtown west. Just look at the MSG. In terms of this actual post office I've always had great experiences, it's close to work so I use it a bit. I generally have to ask questions since I'm sending packages back home OS but the staff are helpful and given me the good oil on what to do. Go check it out, even if just to sit out on the steps out front on a nice day. read more

Honestly, this place is much much better than most USPS in comparison or just I haven't really been to a good USPS. Wait is short with all the window open and most people really are waiting on line due to the stupid and surgically complicated forms located on those penless table. I will suggest that you do all your can online and just drop off at the location however, still get in line to get it scanned. If you don't have a receipt, they just say it's processed online and never got drop off. Honestly, i would just pay a few dollar more to use UPS or FedEx. read more

This older lady with glasses behind the counter was super slow, she probably checked out awhile ago. When I brought my flat rate box to her, she sounded " concern" about my box being too big, so she was walking around doing a lot of " I'm not sure if this is going to work, I'll have to check." Shuffles here and there and then tells me it was fine but she was "concern" about my box. The next time I was helped by a younger afro-american dude and he was quick, had some pep in his step and gave some advice to save money on shipping. cough *media mail* These two experiences are WORLDS apart and I wanted to be fair and not get too generous or mean with my review so I give it a overwhelming MEH tree stars. it really depends who's behind the counter. read more

My Fiancé and I went there to have our wedding invitations hand canceled. We paid the 5 cents per invitation for this service. When we received the invitation we mailed ourselves it was obviously machine canceled. Super disappointing. read more

I went here after work to renew my passport after a failed attempt at going during my lunch break to the Kips Bay one. There was no line, and I was seen immediately. Since I had made sure I had all the paperwork in order before I came, the whole process took less than 10 minutes. The only reason I'm leaving off a star is because the signage for the passport windows is a little confusing - there were two windows open but it was unclear whether both were staffed at that time and meant for passport processing (yes, it turned out). The employee I dealt with was very efficient and polite. read more

No one ever picks up the phone! You go in person and they tell you to call the number. Horrible customer service. The reviews here seem to review the building more than the actual service. The service here is non-existent. Twice they've lost packages, another time they lost my rent check, and this final, third time my package was deemed undeliverable and I went to the actual post office to pick it up and all I got was a run-around. Everyone said they were powerless to do anything even though I had a tracking number stating the package was in the building. Apparently there's an etherial upstairs 4th floor where the magic happens but no one can communicate with. All they do is give you a phone number that when you call, rings and rings unanswered no matter what time of day you call. I had to trek to this office twice and once at 7 in the morning because the manager told me to be there at 7. Of course when I got there, I was told I was given the run-around. The redeeming quality was man I met on the final morning trying to redeem this package (although tough in a typical new-yorker manner) truly tried his best to be helpful. In the end, he had to resort to giving me the same number everyone else did - the number that just rings without answer - but at least he tried other ways of helping me. He even acknowledged that no one would answer and that the USPS isn't what it used to be do to understaffing. I called corporate and they filed a case number and apologized stating that they've had problems in NYC with branches not picking up their phones and directing everyone there when they go in person. Overall, if what you're sending is important, stick to UPS or FedEx. It costs more but they have customer service that are reachable and will more than likely solve the problem. The US Postal Service in general has just decayed over the years from the "nor rain nor snow..." mentality to an overall apathy and lack of accountability. Of course they'll always exist as a government entity but this is definitely the one situation where it's just best in some circumstances to pay a little more elsewhere for the peace of mind that you will actually be treated like a customer instead of a nuisance. read more

I'm a new customer. I'm not used to being yelled at by miserable employees. (The cops that work here greet me more often than the employees.) -The day I signed up, I had a teller yelling at me because I didn't understand part of the application process. (One of her co-workers who I have since learned quit walked up to ask her to stop yelling at me.) -Today, I had a teller explain to me how one of her co-workers was "absolutely the most disgusting thing", then ask me why I had my fingure up my butt when I was itching the back of my leg. Obviously, I got frustrated and we began to argue until she screamed for 4 or 5 seconds before she threw my ID down then shreiked, "I'm louder than you!" ***I do wanna say there is one employee named James who always smiles and waves. read more

The clerks are consistently unfriendly, and the post offices regulations are inefficient. Clerks are required to follow an annoying script regardless of whether or not the customer has already made the answers to their questions clear. The script tries to upsell clients, which I find inappropriate in a government agency. Packages are not delivered as quickly or as correctly as they are by other companies in the industry, and packages are often lost. Would give zero stars if I could. read more

Phone rings all day long and the one time someone actually picked up they hung up immediately after saying sorry. Mail carriers are pretty terrible as well, it seems like they scan boxes as delivered so they're "delivered" in time and wait a couple days to actually deliver them when it's convenient. read more

I lost my passport and needed to apply for a replacement (everyone, listen to your mother and keep your important documents in a safe space!). After wasting two lunch hours trying to get it done at a post office in the Financial District (90 Church St.), only to be frustrated each time by the loooong, slow-moving line, I decided to give up and go to this post office by Penn Station since they accept passport applications until 6pm on weekdays. I went on a Friday, arriving at 5. I was expecting a miserable experience and to be there for hours - and even came prepared with snacks! - but I was done with the whole thing in less than an hour. (Maybe I just lucked out by not arriving at a peak time - I would have thought that after work would be a popular time, but then again it *was* a beautiful summer Friday.) When you show up, you get a ticket with a number, so you don't have to wait in a line and can hang out on the nearby benches, which had plenty of room. There were only a few people ahead of me, and they definitely took less time with each applicant than the previous post office I'd tried. The worker who processed my application was efficient and pleasant, and so was the one calling numbers. read more

Went here to send a big box to Australia and every single person staff member I encountered was so friendly! Even the security staff went to extra effort to assist me in packing, by sourcing packaging tape and lending me their pens. Little things like this make a big difference in today's society where most people don't have much time for you. Made the stress of posting a large parcel much easier to bear. I have to say, this USPS is quite ridiculous. Some of the employees are great and helpful while others make the experience that much worse. I also have had a PO Box for quite some time. You have to use the main line to pick up packages that they could very easily slip into the PO Box. Express and/or priority mail sometimes takes 2 weeks or more because they're often misshipped. I'm currently waiting on a package from Brooklyn which was shipped last week. Once again, misshipped. I should have simply picked it up in person. USPS, get it together. It's no wonder the business is sinking. I'm close to going back to renting my UPS box at a ridiculous cost just for the reliability. read more

This location has great hours. Not only do you take care of your mail services in an aesthetically beautiful and historical monument (that houses a small and interesting museum) but the staff are wonderful too. Kudos to Tiffany who greeted me with the biggest, friendliest smile and brief conversation....and the sweet cashier man from the mail supply shop who put so much effort into helping me find my fallen dime. There's no word to describe this kind of service. This is the kind of service that makes the world goes back to ice age. I had a missed delivery (though I was at home and no door bell rang) so I went there to get my package. To say that the guy, whom I was sent to to get my package, who sits at window 9 on Wednesday at 7pm is a total piece of shit , is a compliment. It's ur job to work until 10pm not 7pm. I waited for 35 mins to get a stupid package with no delivery receipt because there really was none attached anywhere on my door or building. He made faces when I said there was no receipt left on my door. Then he sent me to window 2 which was closed. Then he sent me to another woman to help him because he was too lazy to get off his actual fucking fat ass to maybe burn 5 calories from donuts n fried shit that he ate. The woman who was nice enough to check for my package said she couldn't get it bc its upstairs in another segment n she doesn't deal with it. The whole usps system said its opened until 10pm and I can get my package until 10 not 7pm. She even asked me why I came now n not earlier. Like wtf do u mean? Package said it was attempted at 5pm n that was 7pm when I went. I have a life unlike those useless ppl who I dealt with. Also it was not her freakin problem to question me. What is this? This place exists to remind us that public company is a failure and we should all resort to private companies. Another guy next to me also had the same problem when the fat ass guy charged him more than he should have been charged to send a letter. $11 to send a letter?? That is unheard of. Even jails don't deserve this kind of people to work there. the government would be better of paying these fat lazy low IQ scums full of attitudes asses to be lab rats testing nuclear weapons or chemicals rather than paying them to work at usps. Beautiful on the inside and out. It does get busy during lunchtime and a line does form but I've experienced good customer service. There are multiple lines but each is for different things - there are lines for passport stuff, general mailing, and po box stuff (not 100% but make sure you're in the right line). The steps are also a great place to sit and eat lunch! read more

Singular worse customer service experience of my life at the Passport office fall 2014. I am an event planner, a purely service field, so I am excessively courteous to other people who have to work with the public. I patiently waited in queue to apply for name change on passport. After hours, was told that I had the wrong form and that I would not be able to complete my transaction at all. Not. This is the wrong form, please fill this one out instead. The agent kept looking to her friends to know what to tell me; when I asked why I can't fill out the form now, they refused to help. Then I tried to ask for their supervisor, one of the women who clearly has little regard for time and does not want to do her job drags her feet over to tell me off. I asked for both of their names and they just turned to the side and dodged the question, whispering something under their breath. As I'm trying to get an explanation, they call over the next client and so now we're both awkwardly standing next to each other because people here have no consideration for their job. awful awful awful awful awful awful. My advice is to just pay middleman companies to address your passport issues. It's a little more money but it saves you time, tears, and trouble of dealing with this type of people who have a complete disregard for their job and treat people like shit. read more

Very rarely have the desire to boycott a business but I will do my utmost to avoid the US Postal Service from now on. Their professionalism and customer service have gone to the gutter. I attempted to cash a money order in a number of different locations and they didn't have enough money in their register. There was only one that the amount, but their system to verify the document wasn't working. When I attempted to get feedback on where else I could go their rudeness was unbelievable. I spent the whole day going from one post office to another and the customer service telephone number didn't allow me to get through to a live human. I was also told at all the branches that they had no way of knowing which location had enough money in their register. Methinks the USPS should stop selling money orders (which they charge a fee for) and perhaps generally go out of business. They are an inefficient and antiquated behemoth that should cease to exist. read more

I LOVE this post office! The staff is always kind, the building is GORGEOUS and there is always security there to make you feel safe if you decide to go at 3:00 in the morning. It was my third time in this location. Always the same - long line. You have to spend on the line at least 20-30 minutes. Wasting time!!! Just go another location. I find 42nd street one. Let me start by saying "your opinion counts" and a circle around it started this much deserved rant. As if the post office isn't the worst start of the day, it was definitely the worst part of the night. I waited an hour dancing around the incompetent, overweight, and belligerent. I've always avoided the post office and for good reason, they seem to hate work and hate you for coming into the post office. Only obvious reasons can explain: "I ain't gonna do it, shes gonna do it" "oh yeah shes been waiting a long time but im not doing it" "I'm on passports I can't help you you have to wait again" " she was helping me at aisle 9..."THEN YOU GOTTA WAIT for her" (45 minutes later) "first of all you ain't even suppose to be holding these" (the certified mail I had just been given back) "I don't know what you gonna do" "I asked her if she wanted an electronic receipt and she said no (x3)" **please note that I was not asked if I wanted a physical return label with a signature. There was also none at the various counters located all along the spacious building which is why it was not completed or known to exist. Please expect this level of professionalism, intelligence and human decency when you arrive at the post office, its more fun than shopping for a tombstone! Big props to Alana in aisle 9 for most of the quoted material. A serious thank you to the attendant with braces and glasses orchestrating the post office line, she was sympathetic and inched me over through the windows that refused to help me even with her intervention. I hate that someone like you has to be in the presence of such award winning people but you for smiling throughout the dreadful hour kept me from going insane and I am very thankful for that. read more

To be avoided at all costs unless you are a) a masochist, b) a business management student doing a field study on how NOT to run an efficient business, c) homeless and need someplace very warm to stand for a very long while. The saving grace of this post office used to be its window service which was staffed 24/7. No longer. Now hours are strictly limited and on off days, like today, a Sunday, there were only 2 windows open for (I counted) 27 people in line. Two people were serviced in the course of twelve minutes. Seven were served in the course of 23 minutes. Get at the end of the line with War and Peace, but don't think of the frozen Russian steppes, wear shorts or a swimsuit even in November because the temperature inside is close to 85 degrees. Your friendly line mates may hold your place so you can go outside to cool down and get ice water if you do the same for them. Expect to be in line about an hour. This is why FedEx took over the delivery market. read more
