Very beautiful building from the 1930s. I felt transported to another era, as many of the details are still the original ones for what I could observe. The employees were very attentive considering the long line and handle my package with care. This is, together with the La Jolla post office, the nicest historical post office I have been around. The parking situation is tough, you only get 15 minutes parking spots and are difficult to get, so you end up parking in the nearby streets that unfortunately are full of transient people. That part is very sad to see and also somehow, I did not feel safe parking there and having to walk passing by some weird scenes. I went there coincidentally but probably will think again due to the parking issue. read more

Second time I've had to deal with Tracy! She shouldn't be a manger. She was supposed to call me after an issue w/ a package ( that she couldn't pin point why it was returned) she never called I called three times left a message. Still no call back .so I had to drive 20 minutes to go. See if I could talk to her and then she said she's busy. I see her walk past not busy. (And then she walks again just now and gives me a dog a dog from a manager when she was in the wrong) an issue that she told me she was gonna call me and take care of Noor. Did she have the decency to come out when I drove all the way here too personally I talk to her about it. Second time with this woman ! She shouldnt be a manger here at all! read more

literally why do people work at the post office if their attitude is gonna be as if they've worked every day for the last 80 years. Located in the center of Downtown San Diego lays the official Unites States Post office. Its right off E street between 8th and 9th street and right across the street from the old San Diego public library. This post office supplies all your postal needs and wants. The post office is nicely built and the architecture is quite fascinating as where you can feel the place has had quite some time of where its at. The ceilings are high and antique and the spaces are big and rustic with alot of history behind it. The lines go quick and easy with plentiful workers behind the counters. You can easily mail packages or return packages with ease. Please make sure if returning packages your label is USPS and not UPS because they won't accept it. Thank you so very much, Alberto!! :) : ) This is a busy US Post Office, it is a federal government agency, it is not a business as another yelper angrily & offensively wrote among other garbage she wrote on yelp regarding this post office. But, despite, being busy they make a lot of effort to answer their phones, what smaller SD post offices seem lacking. My friend, Mr. Sullivan and the local San Diego Police Dept. Community Relations Officer, Larry Turner, and I'm sure others have made an effective, Humane, effort to have the homeless camping out, Heroin drug induced nodding out in front during daylight so that children can see, defecating and doing God knows what in their tents, moved again humanely away from this Federal Building. I haven't seen the trash, and the belligerently panhandling homeless from circa March 2024 to June 2024. Thank you, Alberto and Thank you, OFC Larry Turner and Mr. Sullivan. The most unprofessional workers I've ever encountered. They teach their employees to be lazy and not do their job. And when called out they will gaslight you. They never deliver packages with signature. They are too lazy to come to your door. They immediately return it to the post office to have you pick up your items there. When you talk to them about this issue they always have an excuse "there's a gate" or, best one I got so far "there's an elevator". Not there is no gate where I live nor is there an elevator. You're just too lazy to do your damn job. UPS and FedEx have no problem coming to my door. A bunch or unprofessional and lazy people who work there. read more

This location is sketchy af!!! You already know it is when the drop off has to be at the counter because the drop boxes can't be trusted to not get tampered with. Plus, it smells like human urine because all the homeless hang out nearby. Thankfully, the package that I shipped made it safely. Hence the 2 star. Do not recommend. Only went because I was in a rush and it's downtown. Parking can be iffy too depending on the time and day. read more

Not recommended, they "lost my PlayStation 5" The lady who helped me asked if it had any batteries and I said maybe it's a PlayStation 5, she got super exited and said they are hard to find, I left regretting telling her what it was cause I had a bad feeling!! Yup!!! A month later eBay took the money out of my account because the buyer never got it. I have a tracking number it shows it never left!!! The front staff were friendly but the supervisor Claude was NOT that helpful- anything to not deal with the problem - call these people, call those people, try this, try that, only to find out my items were at his post office the whole time and he just didn't feel like he was paid enough or that it was his responsibility. Mail is always missing among other items and am told by them, they didnt deliver it [insert made up excuse; I verified it was untrue] . Gov should investigate and audit bad practices at this location and completely revamp the service here and in the area. read more

Like any large scale convention, San Diego Comic-Con can be stressful in many ways. One thing lots of fans who do not live locally need to contend is finding a way to get all the neato stuff you purchase from the convention to take home. On the suggestion of friends who are SDCC veterans I was told to look for a local post office not too far from the convention center, and so I found my way to this branch. From the get go this post office drew me in. The exterior is right out of a movie set in the 30's (the era this building was constructed). Sweeping, grand and gigantic, they do not quite make post offices like this anymore. The interior is a snapshot of another time. Lots of marble, long *open* cashier windows where you can literally slide something right across the counter to the postal workers inside. I'm pretty sure I have not seen a post office without big plexiglass barriers since I was a teenager. It was a really beautiful piece of architecture. Even better? The staff was fantastic. It was not a particularly busy morning so I think I lucked out, but when I came with my pile of Comic-Con goods the ladies there were more than glad to help me find a box that would fit all my stuff and help me tape it up. They were super pleasant and when they found out I was an out-of-towner, they were more than happy to recommend local places to eat. It was probably the nicest experience I've had at a post office in years! read more

Five stars for going postal: Over one month ago I moved from San Diego to another city in California. Two weeks before moving, at the local post office (San Diego's Ocean Beach USPS branch)) I handed a postal worker my address change info. I have yet to see one piece of mail forwarded to me. This failure from USPS has resulted in numerous complaints from both business contacts and personal correspondents, and in loss of subscription services (which I included in my forwarding info. This post office doesn't get enough credit. The scene outside isn't the most glamorous but the workers inside are always helpful. One woman in particular is truly super helpful. Her name is Christy. I've been lucky enough to have been helped by Christy a few times. She is always extremely patient and kind and knows everything about the business. I sent a packet to USCIS via Priority and Certified mail with signature request. USCIS claimed that they did not receive the packet. I went online to retrieve the signature card receipt using the tracking number. However, it was unreadable. I went to this post office and met Luis R. He went above and beyond his duty to help me retrieved the actual signature card. He printed and gave it to me without charge. Thank you very much for all your help Luis. This is hands-down the worst Post Office location that I've been to in San Diego. IF you can reach a clerk before your 30 minute parking meter outside runs out - count yourself fortunate! That's the biggest problem with this place: the line. I'm not even going to mention the other problems people have listed in their reviews. More than once I've left line because my meter has run out - a $40 parking would only be insult to injury... Make the trip to Hillcrest or even the Post Office tucked into the Mission Valley mall (by Macy's Home Store) and don't bother with the downtown location. read more

If it was possible to give zero stars, this location would definitely get that rating from me. We were waiting for a delivery of one CD. ONE! The mail carrier, for some reason known only to him, decided that the envelope that the CD came in couldn't be left in our mail box, which is big enough to fit five or six CD shipments (as I've learned from the past). Then he decided that the CD couldn't be left in the large lock boxes directly across from our bank of mailboxes, even though they're big enough to crawl into. What truly flummoxes me, however, is that he also chose to ignore option number three - leaving the package with our rental office. Instead, he decided that it'd be necessary to take the package - ONE CD! - back to the post office, after leaving us a notification that the package would be available for pick-up after 9 am tomorrow. BUT, what makes this even more frustrating is that the hours for pick-up during the week are 9 am - 4:30 pm. That's not even a full 8 hour day! Besides, I'm at work during those hours, and I certainly can't go to my boss to say, "I have to leave early to pick up a CD from the post office because the mail carrier was too stupid to figure out how to leave it in my mailbox." The post office may wonder why they're steadily losing business. When they treat people's mail this way, is it really so hard to figure out? We've never before had an issue with the service in our area before, but this is inexcusable. Now I have to go out of my way to do the job that the freaking mail carrier should have done to begin with. Way to go, USPS! Way to make a customer for life! The lobby opens at 7 am. The windows open at 8:30 am. I entered at 7:52 am. By "lobby," I mean the antiquated post office boxes, because otherwise there is nothing here--no Automated Postal Center and no packaging materials. All I needed was a flat-rate box to pack up and mail later. So, hearing some bustle behind the closed windows, I knocked on one until a lady opened up. She was not at all happy about it, but she DID give me the box that I needed. So thumbs up for helping me, but it wasn't pleasant. In Chicago, they would have ignored me entirely until the stroke of 8:30:59, so I should be thankful that I got my box and could proceed with my busy morning. read more

But the vibe in the building is a little weird. I feel like I'm going to some place stuck in the 1930's frozen in time. And the people in the area are kinda strange-- Last week I went to pick up a letter and saw a colorful mix of people in line in front of me-- the middle aged obese man who looked like Mike Meyers "Goldmember" character in a fat suit to the chatty lady talking to the conservatively dressed man carrying a book titled "How to Make Money in Foreclosures with No Cash Down". I took a day off and was home all day waiting for a delivery that required a signature. I heard USPS through my door (!!!) - you know, that clicking sound from their tablet. And then guess what? They left, never rang the bell or knocked the door, and left a note in my mailbox that they have missed me and I need to go to the post office for pick-up. Ugh, I don't like this USPS location much at all. But, I find myself often in Downtown so I typically end up here when needing to drop off a package or, god forbid, buy a stamp. Not much parking around, so I throw my flashing lights on in front of the ramen place and cross my fingers. It's worked out so far.
