I am a disabled veteran and I was having trouble figuring out how to work the process for getting a passport and getting the information correct and applying the photo and so on. She knew everything and took very careful steps to make sure everything was filled out correctly and properly before we mailed it. She was so instrumental and getting that envelope in the mail today. A couple of months ago I was sent to this location to authenticate me for the government. They claimed they didn't do it. That is not true. I went to D Street and they did it. Today I went to this location because I need to replace a USPS mailbox key. They told me to hire a locksmith. That is illegal. I went to D street, they were shocked and informed me that yes the Bellam Boulevard location does do key Replacements requests. This review is only for the passport office. AMAZING! I went to the office in Novato first - what a flipping JOKE! The man never looked up at me, he tore all my papers apart and motioned for me to pay. Um, no. Then he told me I could go elsewhere - so, I drove to San Rafael. Agnes, I think that's her name. So knowledgeable, so kind, so supportive!! We talked about where I might go, as I had no plans, but a passport was on my bucket list. Not only that, but, I got my and passport card in TWO weeks! Yes, two weeks, REGULAR service. There's no other place in Marin I'd rather go. This woman was so helpful, and the service over all was faster than expected. The absolute worst. Appointments are now required for passport services, which is great! My husband and I planned far in advance to schedule an optimal time to (1) both take off work and (2) take a potty training toddler in for her first passport. We arrived promptly at our appointment time at 10:30a, only to be told that the passport officer was on break. We waited until well after 11a before we were seen. Another family arrived for their 10:45a appointment and was also waiting with two small children. Why on earth would they accept appointments during the time of an employee's scheduled break? Our 15-minute appointment slot turned into 50 minutes, making our kid miserable (no public restrooms) and both of us late for meetings. The also didn't like my photocopy of the birth certificate and charged me $1 to make their own copy (something that I wouldn't normally rant about, but was certainly the icing on the sh*t cake that was this experience). We needed new passports for our kids. Tried to make an appointment online and couldn't figure out how. Tried calling several times and got no answer. Showed up to use walk in service and office opened up 1/2 hour late (supposed to open at 8 am). Got a number on arrival (we were about 12th in line). Seems it averages about three people an hour. So slow. Why? I have no idea. We had all our documents filled out, photos, birth certificates, etc. Should take no more than 10 minutes one would think. But no. Dropped off a package here in their Drop Box and it was stolen. I dropped it off with another package that same day and the other package made it to its destination but not that one. Convinced one of the employees stole it here. I have filed a police report. Don't use their Drop boxes, get a receipt, and probably take a picture of who you gave it to! 4 stars only because the process is totally fubar'd. If you're walking in on Saturday, show up before 7am. We showed up at 745am, 15 mins before opening and were 35th in line. They give out numbers to those in line and maybe you'll get seen. In any case, Agnes is a saint. She's the only one working and takes pictures, copies, and submits the applications. She worked 8am straight thru lunch and past 1pm until 230 and beyond to process everyone who was in line. If you have your documents in line and pictures already taken, you'll be in and out in 10 mins, once your number is called. We waited for 7.5 hours for 10 minutes of dealing with her, but it was worth it because it got done. Just be prepared to spend the day there if you don't wanna get up super early. read more

I am trying to get a USPS lock put on an apartment house mailbox and have gone to the San Rafael, CA Post Office Main twice. the manager tere, Harriet, has twice lied to me, telling me that the USPS does not do that. (They are the only ones who DO do that) and then telling me that my zip code is not at her office. I just talked to our postal deliveryman and he says our mail does come out of that office. Someone shoot me now please as I wait for my sons passport...I'm the 9th person to be called and have been waiting for 2.5 hours already. Really? I got an email from usps to go to the post office to do an in person verification using a provided bar code. The email had specific instructions telling the staff how to do it. The end result? No one knew how to do it. The person who attended me called me later and argued that it is UPS that I am supposed to go. What? I gave up. Went to the Mill Valley branch. One Star only because zero and negative starts are not available. - Showed up for a renewal of my child's passport 3.5 weeks ahead of a trip - Paid for expedited processing and overnight shipping, all to be completed in 2 weeks - Completed application and provided all detail satisfactory to the passport agent - Three weeks later, still no passport - US State Dept. says agent should have taken original of the child's birth certificate and forgot. - Cannot get an another appointment ahead of the trip. - Independent agencies do not want the case as it is in process. - US State. Dept now suggests: - I go back to San Rafael - Resubmit the application, making sure the agent does every thing right - Obtained a sealed envelope with the completed application enclosed within - Fly to TUCSON -as there are not appointments in SF - as Tucson does not have same-day processing, spend a night there and get the passport the next day. I can totally understand the clerk counter job in USPS is very systematic, unfulfilling and boring. and I try to be polite as possible to the counter staff at the USPS location. But if you don't like your job, then why keep doing it, like the employee of this USPS. Service is truly unreliable, if you ask the same question to differ counter clerk you will get differ answer. it seems they don't even know how to do their job, If you have a large heavy package to mail, the clerk they will show very unwelcome manner. I went there 3 times to mail a package that is 18X18X24 moving box to Hawaii. First time they said box too big, all those the box I use (Sell by uhaul) clearly state it is 18X18X24" and is clearly under the 108" Girth dimension, But clerk state the dimension they put on Uhaul box is wrong and no matter what will not take it. Second time, I went back 2 days later repackage the stuff into a smaller box, 18X18X20" waited another 20 minutes, now they said the Stamp.com label I put on was 3 days ago and they can only accept package that is dated within 2 days. The clerk is stubborn as rock no choice but give up, and really the reason why the label was 3 days old is because they will not accept the my first attempt of using the 18X18X24 box. Which is clearly under the 108 girth length. Third time, after void and reprint the label then they finally take it. Totally waste my time and their time, I hope USPS can file chapter 11 and reorganize into a more efficient unit. read more

This is an awful post office. The staff is utterly robotic. The music loud and horrible, BUT worse yet, the other day I shipped a book. I wanted tracking. Clerk # 21 INSISTED it cost extra for tracking, $1.05. Then I shipped another book today--went to the Corte Madera Post Office and the clerk there said sending books media mail already includes tracking. So Clerk # 21--apparently by design--swindled me. Since he's an old guy, I doubt he would not have know. Is a post office rated on how much money they earn? Is swindling a way to earn more money? Anyway, I'm going there tomorrow to get my $1.05 and report Cleark # 21! read more

It is in a super pain-in-the-derriere location where a lot of traffic jumbles up on the ramps to/from 101, but there is ample parking. In fact, there were 2 identical midnight blue Teslas in the parking lot. After I mailed my stuff, I saw those Teslas. And I wanted to run back inside and yell, "WHOSE TESLAS ARE THOSE??? You're twins!" But I would have felt like a poor imbecile. As for the line and service, they were adequate. Kinda slow, but at least the postal workers are nice. read more

Some of the employees seem polite, but the passport processing is extremely slow, and the guy doing the passports seems to take pleasure in finding anything he possible can wrong. Even if nothing is wrong, he goes extra slow and makes you do all sorts of unnecessary steps. I would guess only 8-10 passports could ever get processed in a day. I cannot imagine that a post office system that is suffering financially can support this lack of revenue and service much longer. read more

5 stars for our Greenbrae carrier. He's even gone on his own to hunt down packages he suspected were misdelivered by the substitute carrier. 3.5 stars for the actual post office. Customer service area folks are working on the main things and will stop to help you -- the person will either be very friendly and thorough or seem frustrated to be disturbed. In their defense, it is a very busy post office -- it is the hub for the entire region. Location is awkward, parking is awkward. Go first thing in the morning or not at all. read more

Also had an argument regarding a place in line. I procrastinated getting my passport with less than a month until my trip, so got up at the crack of dawn on July 5th and made my way to the passport office. Agnes was awesome- kind, engaging, professional. She assured me I would get my passport in time- "you are paying a lot of money to expedite this (true!), you will get it in time." And she was right, I received it in the mail a little over a week later. I can't say for sure that you will have the same luck as I did getting it so quickly, but if Agnes is helping you, you are in excellent hands. I have give this post office a single star for the following reasons 1. According to my tracking number on a recent package my package arrived at their facility and was to be then sent to the civic center location and on to my home...they have gone on to lose my package in their facility. 2. I have tried to contact them by phone but it NEVER rings. It is always busy which leads me to believe that they just take it off the hook. It is far too much of a coincidence for it to be busy all day long and every time I call. 3. When coming into the office on any occasion the postal works are never friendly and definitely never smile. A new management truly needs to come in there and do some "house cleaning" there should be NO reason that this post office conducts it's self in this way...NONE of the other post offices in Marin conduct themselves like this!!! read more

These are hard times , but it does NOT give anyone the excuse to be unprofessional . I HAD to go into the passport office due to getting a passport for a minor. Agnes was the USPS employee working the passport office. NOT only was she rude and unprofessional, but her questioning was condescending. Passports for Minors. With my two kids, I got there an hour before the post office opened. I was prepared. We had books, emails to catch up on, snacks for the kids, and stuff for them to do. I was the first in line. It took 30 minutes to get my kids' passports done. The guy working the counter was fine. He was pretty subdued and not a lot of laughs. However, he worked his way through a pile of forms in a professional manner. The lesson: come early and come prepared.... read more

This is a hit or miss location. I have gone in and had no line and other times the line is out the door with one counter worker and it takes almost an hour. This is the main location in San Rafael so it is busier then most but due to the cuts in funding they only have one or two people working the counter. I have to deposit checks in the bulk mailing section and that too is a hit or miss. There is one lady working back there and takes one person at a time. Does not matter if you are dropping thousands of pieces of bulk mail or just needing 30 seconds of her time to deposit a check. If the person in front of you needs 45 minutes to process you have to wait. read more

The US postal employee who works the passport office at Belham Blvd, San Rafael, has to be the nastiest person I have encountered doing customer service in a long time. She told me to fill out the blue form, which I did. She is behind a door, covered with paper, (God forbid we might see her filing her nails.) so I knocked on the door. I heard some kind of a sound, but when she didn't answer, I knocked again. She yelled then. When she finally came to the door, I apologised and said I had a "major hearing deficit. " No, response. Then, she scolded me that I could just mail my passport and the application in. BUT, she rejected my photo as it was 1/16th too small all the way around. If I had mailed it in, it would have taken at least six weeks before the application was rejected. Nasty, Nasty, Nasty experience. read more

Many people say that this is the worst post office in San Rafael. I avoid this post office for years at a time, and I am happy. Then one dark day I have to go there, and I am not happy. In fact, I get very mad. I try not to, but they drive me to madness. This place was dismal when I moved here 20 years ago. Since that time customer service has hit rock bottom, and started to dig. Why did I go? We hired a contractor to fix our wall. He leaves his equipment in the driveway. He doesn't block the driveway. We can easily walk into and out of our house. Since the contactor started, we have received no mail. I called the post office. I get a busy signal on the first five tries. Then the phone rings ten times, followed by a high pitched squeal. I do this five times. Take a breather. Try again. Miracle! Someone answers the phone. It sounds like an adolescent, because he is mumbling, and using that "why are you bothering me" tone of voice. I tell him that I have not received mail in about a week. He puts me on hold. For a long time. I think he has abandoned the call. As I am about to give up, he speaks again. It turns out that my mail carrier, whom I really liked, has put a hold on our mail. Why? On hold again, before I can protest. After a slightly shorter wait, he comes back. "Your mailbox is obstructed." Our mail box is not obstructed. I go down a list of possible replies, like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 1. I decide not to say the angry things I am thinking. I simply ask, How can I get my mail? He says, "You can come in and pick it up here. When are you open tomorrow (Saturday)? "I don't know," He replies. There is a long silence. "You don't know?" I repeat, blood pressure rising. "Maybe ten?" Another silence. "I'm pretty sure by ten. Ten to two, something like that." I wanted to yell, but I just thanked the gentleman for his time. He knew my address. I don't want an angry postal worker to know my address. I went to the post office. This has to be the darkest interior space I have seen since the Exploratorium. There are quite a few unfortunates in front of me, standing in a grim little line, like Dante's vestibule to hell. There are three workers at three windows, and one rotund guy in a post office baseball cap, who watches these three, but decidedly does not help them. After a long wait, my moment arrives. "Next," says the clerk. No eye contact, no visible emotion. I announce the cause of my visit. The agent says something I cannot understand. I repeat the cause of my visit, slowly, because there is a language barrier. The agent asks if I want to put a hold on my delivery. No thank you. That was already done. I just want my mail. She goes behind the wall, which gives me a chance to examine the little booth she works in. I start to feel some sympathy for her. She returns to say that my mail is not here. Where is it? Its in the delivery truck. They will deliver it today. But I know that they will not deliver it, because my contractor is still there, with his "obstruction." I try to explain this, but she repeats, more loudly, "They will deliver it today." I gave up. Went home. They did not deliver it today. I tried calling again, but this time I can't get through. I want to put a hold on delivery, so maybe my mail will be in the post office when I return. I can't believe that I am planning to return, but I need my mail. Finally I get on the website, and put a hold on my mail. Tomorrow I will return. Stay tuned. Part Two: I picked up my mail, after only a short wait, and all was well. Except that I couldn't help noticing the guy and his mom just to the side of the line, laboriously moving the contents of a large box into a smaller box, while the post office worker (same one I had yesterday) gave them an occasional dirty look. As I grabbed my mail triumphantly, the clerk stepped over to them, now holding their tightly crammed smaller box, and said, "No! We no take that box! Box too big!" The guy started to protest. "But we just put it into a smaller box, like you said!" The clerk repeated the same words in a louder voice. She was yelling now. "Box too big!" The guy looked like he could commit murder. His mom waved her hands and walked away. I felt like yelling back at her. I looked at the line of people waiting. All of them turned their heads away. No one would meet my eyes, or look at them, except for one guy who shook his head. This is how it happens. I wait in long lines. I am subject to arbitrary rules, and declining service. I state my case to government employees, who may be hostile, or just indifferent. If I protest, I get yelled at, or worse. If someone gets pulled out of line near me, I don't get involved.
