Utara is a fun brewery with a kitchen that makes Indian food! I was there on a weeknight in July, and there were lots of seats. There's a big outdoor covered area with picnic benches and lots of indoor table/bar seating as well. I got the huckleberry hard seltzer, which was $6 and tasty. Most of the other beers and ciders are $5-7, which is fairly affordable! The kitchen serves Indian fusion/bar food, including naan pizza ($11), mac and curry ($7), vindaloo fries ($10), in addition to entrees ($17) like korma, tikka masala, and saag. The Mac and curry was yummy and was a creamy Mac and cheese with tikka masala on top - I enjoyed the fusion! The naan pizza was also very cheesy and came out fresh from the oven. Small parking lot next to the building and lots of street parking. The service was great here and I'd definitely come back again. read more

Maybe because the AC was broken and it was 90 degrees - had a hard time enjoying this brewery. Picked this brewery hoping for a unique experience, but it didn't quite hit the mark. The Indian food didn't pair well with the beers, and the staff seemed disinterested. The food was underwhelming, which might explain why the place was empty. They are relatively new to Sandpoint, maybe in time they will improve. read more

I was told when in Sandpoint to make sure and slow down and get a bite to eat and a beer at Utara Brewing Company. I bought some samosas from the menu and had the Cannabis Terpene beer, classified as a New England IPA . The samosas were simply out of this world and the beer was excellent. Definitely a different take to the New England IPA as the name may imply. This beer had floral, fruity and hoppy flavor highlights. Steve was at Utara prior to my visit here and requested to have some Utara beer brought home. I bought their Tangerine Pale to bring home. That beer as was equally impressive as well with the aromatics , the tangerine and the Belgiany flavors at work. So I too have to carry on the recommendation to try Utara as well. Utara has been on my list to check out for quite some time, so I'm glad we finally made it. We started with the curry fries and a few beers and thought we might just keep it at that. After tasting how good the curry was, we kept ordering more dishes. The curry mac was a great combination of flavors and the chicken tikka masala was also a standout dish. The start of a mom and daughters trip to Sandpoint and this was our first night's dinner. We went for the Indian food, but I did have a nice huckleberry hard seltzer that went well with my meal. If you know the Mango Tree places in Spokane, then you will be familiar with food like this. Some traditional dishes, but they extend the boundaries with sauces over things like french fries and pasta. It is decent, with a middle of the road spice level, and I don't mean hot spicy. I was served the wrong product. I reached out to the owner provate message. Instead of a simple apology, i am told I'm wrong, and blocked from FB when I went back to again see the description of the item I ordered. Instead of a copper colored bourbon barrel beer with vanilla notes, I got a bright yellow citrus lemony flavored. $9 is overpriced, but at least get it right. I did tip because they are not a popular place and I felt I would take it up with the owner privately. Poor product and immature management response. A visit to Utara for some food and brews is always on our must-do list when visiting Sandpoint. Their excellent brews pair so well with the traditional Indian fare they serve. On this visit I tried their Tangerine Pale Ale which had was the perfect balance of citrus to hops. I've never had tangerine flavored beer and this was very well executed. For food we tried a little bit of everything. The samosas and cheesy naan were a hit. They have a bunch of seating indoor and on benches outdoor. Staff and owner are super friendly and welcoming. This is a really unique establishment. The atmosphere was relaxed and the vibe was fun (definitely a cool people watching spot). The menu isn't huge but WOW is the food delicious!! The ambiance wa interesting but i felt like i wasnt cool enough to be there. Mostly went to try the Indian food since I don't drink. My husband got a beer and was unimpressed by it. The food portions were tiny so I'm glad I didn't go in super hungry. It kinda reminded me of the quality you would find in those microwaveable indian food bags. Expensive though. The protien choices were lame too, chicken and a couple vegetarian and vegan protiens. The service was fine. I think this place was a little too "Sandpoint" for my taste if you know what I mean. My mother has a severe dog allergy and this restaurant allows animals in their facility. Owner was sitting with the customer who owned the dog. Come here if you want giant dogs who lay in the middle of the walkway and bump into you while you get food. Noted most service animals have a vest and paperwork. This one did not. A good brewery vibe in what feels like a revamped old mechanics garage. Like the decore and space out back for soaking up the rays. We went on a non busy day to try out their beer. Seemed very laid back, and had we not eaten lunch already, we were intrigued they had curry, Indian style food. Beer was good, gave them a 3.5 outta 5 score. We had the mineral point IPA, Tangerine ale. You definitely smell and taste the tangerine. Just wasn't completely blown away with beer. On a side note: why can't businesses just do what they do best and leave politics out of it? I was turned off this place by all the anti-capitalism signs. Good beer, nice variety not just pale ale and IPA. Beer and Indian food pair really well. Service very good. The food was well assembled but lacked spice (heat) that I am accustomed to. There are some hot chutney selections but I did not try them. Nice space; I started outside sitting in the sun but then arrived a huge family with 4 kids that looked/acted all the same age about 6yrs maybe. They were a real nuisance and really harshing my aesthetic so I moved to an inside table at the open overhead door which was much nicer. read more

BIG Missed opportunity here. This menu is okay but the execution of it is lacking. In Indian food there is a technique used with the spices called blooming that brings the flavor alive. This fundamental skill is absent at Utara and the dishes come off flat and underwhelming. to compare this food to real Indian food would be akin to comparing Taco Bell to Mexican food. The portions are small for the price and where's the naan bread??? It's such a tiny portion that they might as well not serve any at all. Utara makes their own beer there but doesn't use any of it in their dishes or sauces... Seems like a BIG missed opportunity. read more

We were in the area for a long weekend and did a walking tour of pubs and breweries. Utara exceeded our expectations! We even stopped by a 2nd time, it was that good! The good: - Tasty beer that pairs really well with their food. - Excellent food - Outstanding service - Dog friendly outdoor area The not as good: - Outdoor seating is not as nice as other spots in town, but nice that they have it. Stopped by and asked if it was ok to bring our dog. They said their outdoor seating was dog friendly. The area consisted of well spaced tables with an umbrella for shade. We initially were only going to stop for beer as we were not quite sure how Indian Food would be in Sandpoint. They do have other options as well. After smelling some of it, we decided to give it a go. It ended up being very tasty. The Cheesy naan was outstanding. The Curry sampler was also great. Not all their food is truly authentic Indian, but it was sure good, like the Chips (fries). The beer was also tasty. There were quite a few that members of our group really liked. The beer also paired well with the food. We stopped by a 2nd time to get a growler filled and get something to eat. They filled the growler and then put it in the fridge so it would stay cold while we ate. Service was friendly and outgoing. We will be back. read more

Our group had some people get their food way before others got their food. The naan bread is pretty bad. The staff was rude when one of our group had a problem. After a storm came up and everyone had to rush to the inside restaurant area, one of our group couldn't enter because of allergies. The staff didn't handle the issue well. Several in our party still hadn't received their food and should have offered other alternatives since we couldn't eat outside because of the storm. No voices were raised, yet later the manager had been told by staff that some of our party had yelled at the staff. Clearly not only were the staff deficient in their abilities to handle this issue, they are also dishonest. read more

What a fun place in Sandpoint! Lots of outdoor seating, friendly staff & great food. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but I had the wine and it was lovely. My friends had a hard cider and said it was great. We came for the Indian food, and it did not disappoint. The food menu is very limited, but it was quality. For Indian food, the flavors were mild (not much spice) but it was cooked well. We tried the pizzas, samosas, naan, pickled veggies a couple of curries, and the fries. We came here on a whim for the Indian food on a cold night & it was SO DELICIOUS!!!! I am gluten free and dairy free and the staff made all the accommodations necessary for my meal and went above and beyond! I got the Saag and they made it dairy free and it was so yummy! The samosas were also delicious! It comes with only 3 so if you are sharing keep that In mind. I absolutely loved it here. The staff was so nice too.
