Utopia...it has definitely changed from my "mall rat" days when my friends and I would walk here from the mall. The inside has had a huge makeover and things are very spread out now and it's more bright. Everything is just as expensive as it used to be, if not more. Utopia was always three levels, which you can't tell from the street or the parking lot. The lower level is sex toys, other adult things, and drug paraphernalia. Main level is armor, incense, some clothes, the piercing area and now records. The third level appears to be off limits to customers now. Years ago the third level had music and other interesting things for sale. Out of all the employees that saw my friends and I only ONE said hello. I don't remember Utopia being one for customer service, so clearly that hasn't changed. Utopia has definitely lost the touch it used to have. Thanks for the memories. This place was old school back in my day mid-90s 2000s this was the place to come if you were looking for the inevitable this was the place for records if you are looking for underground Norwegian black metal or any imported thrash metal alternative anything anything that had to deal with rock and classics and and heavy metal hardcore and industrial music this was the place to go to their clothing line was awesome still is this is a monumental place that should be remembered in New York coming from generation x. read more

I just wanted to update my review. I had finally gotten someone on the phone almost month ago and asked if anyone was available in the piercing department to purchase jewelry and get a jewelry change done. Finally someone was available so I went straight there. I was looking for a slightly longer curved barbell (think rook or anti-tragus piercing) however they had none in stock. As this is a pretty normal piece of jewelry used for a decent amount of piercings I was shocked. In the future for piercing related needs I'm definitely going to be skipping utopia however if it's for something else I'll consider going back. read more

Probably have been coming here for about 10 years. Originally I would just come in to buy an array of incense or browse their extensive selection whenever I was looking to kill time or spend unnecessary money. They have really good deals on incense which will run you about five dollars for an assortment of 30 different flavors of your choice. They literally have everything a hipster would need and downstairs you can find a smoke/sex shop equipped with everything from rolling papers to porn flicks. Well there is a simple answer I guess; Lets imagine a society that possesses highly desirable or nearly perfect qualities for its people. That right that is a perfect fantasy! When I was a teenager, I along with many others dreamed of a place that you can live with absolutely no problems. Well this store is absolutely not Utopia, but does allow some of us to escape into our past or others to find their own identity. She attacked my girlfriend because my girlfriend came in to ask if she could push through her nose ring just a little bit and the girl flipped out throwing her food everywhere was screaming at my girlfriend that she doesn't do that she only takes appointments and as my girlfriend tries to leave the store, the woman goes never mind come back I'll do it. Head shop / sex shop / stuff. This interesting place has you covered for incense, bongs (um, I mean hookahs) and an assortment of sex toys that would make a deviant smile... Banging around one day I get a random text from an ex about meeting for lunch and escorting her to Utopia as she had a bachelorette party to hit and wanted the usual dildo gag gift and off we went to Utopia. The place is two floors- upstairs they have a lot clothing: bathing suits, beach wear, t-shirts and the like. There was a good selection of incense for you patchouli sniffers but the real fun is in the basement. We headed down and there is a selection of tame sex stuff - stockings, dick shaped drink stirrers and the like. The real fun stuff is beyond the door near the register... that, my friends, is where a good time can be had by all. Sex tapes, rubber fists and more vibrators, dildos, and lube than you can imagine would be needed or even existed can be found on the left side of the back room. We had great fun playing with all the toys and imagining just why in the hell would you want to stick that big rubber fist up your cooter? Indeed. The other half of the room is devoted to pipes, bongs, hookahs and assorted paraphernalia for those of you who smoke. I don't judge - it is interesting to see and there were some magnificent creations in there to help you get your smoke on. This was my first time here (to most people who know me, this is surprising news). I went here to get a much-needed change of jewelry for my ear piercings. When I arrived, the place was undergoing some kind of construction. Either that, or half of their ceiling had caved in. It was a mess. Regardless, I found my way to the piercer and engaged the seemingly cocky (or aloof?) piercer in conversation as to what I was looking for (and asking what I could and could not reasonably get). I don't pretend to know sh-t about jewelry for a tragus or a helix, and so I asked him instead. All I got were one-wordy replies and comments that he couldn't see my piercings at all, because "your hair is in the way." Well, sorry, let me go walk to where you are sitting, because you can't get up from your perch. Furthermore, they charge you $5 to change jewelry for you. Most places in NYC do it for free, as long as you buy the jewelry there. Hence the reason I did not tip him for the minute it took him to change the jewelry in three spots. I don't know, maybe I'm being harsh, but I like people to engage me in conversation, instead of acting cool, bored or too good to do so. Oh, and the jewelry is way overpriced. I got my bellybutton pierced here when I was 16 and I am so happy it is still around. Utopia has come a long way in recent years. They're back to the fun, quirky place I grew up visiting. The piercers are nice and helpful (I had to get jewelry removed and re-inserted before/after an MRI). The rest of the staff is pleasant and offers their assistance. It still smells amazing in here. And they have a selection of clothing that is no longer just "goth" but also includes some professional items to wear to work. Also they have swords. Who doesn't love to look at swords? read more

Eight years ago this used to be one of the coolest stores on the island. I was in my mid-teens at the time but I remember going to Utopia after school to peruse their collection of all things goth metal and alternative. It used to be a store for band T-shirts novelties piercings and so on. I still have a studded belt I bought here when I was 15 over a decade ago. Unfortunately the store has fallen to the lowest common denominator. What was once a quaint anti-culture spot has now become a monument to selling out. Lazy tie-dye T-shirts, half the store being walled off, the entire upper level which used to have posters, cd's, piercings, and clothes is completely shut down, 70% of the store is now dedicated to crystals and incense. "Utopia," from when I was young, use to be a place to go and get your ears pierced and look at cool stuff. It use to be cluttered and disorganized. Oh what time will do to a place. I went to "Utopia" with a friend that came from out of town. She wanted to pick up some stuff so I had to drive her there (so exciting). The parking lot is still small as I remembered, but it didn't matter because I was in for a surprise going in. Inside at first glance I noticed this place had a incredible makeover! I loved the new look. Also I smelled incense in the background and that's because they are selling them. I couldn't believe the stuff they sold in this place, like, pictures, swords, sexy lingerie, clothing, and so much more. This is a collectors Paradise. I almost didn't want to leave when I saw all the medieval times armor! The staff was nice as well. I believe there were 5 people working and they all were so friendly. They help my friend find everything she needed. They also knew everything in the store, so I know they've been working there for awhile. I love this place and the new look. The girl (Marlene) at the piercing counter was extremely rude and when my husband caught her rolling her eyes at me, after I was being so polite and literally asked one question, I felt so uncomfortable and walked away. After she saw me in the front of the store asking for a manager, she decided to run on tippy toes and apologize with the sweetest tone in her voice. I swear I thought it was another person! I have been going to a reputable body piercer in New York who has worked in the industry for over 10 years and I couldn't get an appointment and thought I'd walk into utopia for immediate help. This piercer Marley refused to switch out my post because she "didn't want to be responsible for someone else's mistake" is what she said (aka I'm too lazy to do my job). First of all that is extremely unprofessional considering that all I had was a little swelling and irritation plus every professional who works the industry knows that it doesn't matter if you change the post even if the piercing is irritated which in fact then it should be changed when asked. In addition if Marley was a reputable piercer she would have done it without ATTITUDE or a problem. Also I have not seen her on the licensed NYC piercer website so I really don't think she's legit. Also to size down the post they were charging $20 which is $5 more than any other reputable piercing shop in Manhattan or Brooklyn. All of their jewelry is extremely over priced and they don't even have a good selection of the higher end BVLA pieces. Sounds to me like they overcharge kids looking to get edgy piercings. My advice, go somewhere else and don't get scammed. read more

Utopia is the entire East Village all crammed into one store, with an infomercial about swords thrown in for good measure. Their shoe selection = 99X + Trash. Their clothing selection = Trash + Search & Destroy. Their music selection is to punk and metal what Kim's is to independent and foreign film. Their staff has been trained to flirt with your boyfriend right in front of you to convince him to buy things. And that is funny. And you can put up with that because they always have enough people on staff that they never make you wait for anything. Here's some crap I don't really care about that they also have here: large piercing station with large selection; swords and other nerdy weapons; incense, candles, tribal things, wiccan things; drug paraphernalia. Negatives/neutrals: Parking lot is insanely small given Utopia's size (but there's plenty of parking around the corner). The whole place smells very strongly of incense. Prices reflect the fact that there are relatively few alternative stores on LI. Positives: Clearance prices are actually pretty decent. You can pretty much guarantee that you can do all of your holiday shopping for all of your alternative friends all in one place if holiday shopping isn't your thing. I got my septum pierced here VERY poorly a year and a half ago. The girl did not know what she was doing, it was ridiculously lopsided and on my columella, no where near the sweet spot. She did something wrong and I started to bleed A LOT. Then she pierced me a second time. Two days later I came down with a terrible fever and a runny nose (not a cold) which I believe to be caused in part by the trauma and not cleanliness. (It seemed very sanitary) I emailed her asking questions and she had the audacity to tell me it was lopsided b/c it was swollen. I cannot believe she let me walk out with it looking like that. If your septum does not look straight immediately it IS NOT straight. This is a notoriously hard piercing to preform but this was far beyond a minor imperfection. I still have thick scar tissue from the "injury". I have since found an experienced professional that I trust greatly. I truly hope the girl has improved but I hope she takes this profession more seriously. I do not appreciate paying full price to a rookie, getting the run around, or itchy scar tissue. BE WEARY! I have loved this store for over 2 decades. They have such a great selection. Most recently I went to buy some new jewelry for my piercings. I arrived about 20 minutes before closing. Marley assisted me and was so amazing. She took her time showing me different jewelry pieces, specific to my piercings. I never felt rushed. I appreciated her honest advise and left so happy. She is so sweet and makes you feel comfortable. She placed the jewelry on and was delicate and made me feel comfortable. She's extremely professional and experienced. She also keeps everything hygienic and clean, wears a mask and gloves, disinfects etc. I highly recommend going to Utopia for many shopping needs but especially when it comes to getting pierced, piercing jewelry and care.
