Often times while traveling, my wife and I always make an effort to grab different types of food that we don't have in our area. Imagine our surprise, that while in town for business, and with time to kill before an art exhibition, we discovered an Uzbeki restaurant. Immediately upon entering, we were greeted and led to a large comfortable booth in the back of the restaurant. The lighting was warm, the walls were adorned with beautiful rugs, and the customers' spirits were high. Each table had been pre-set with the resutarant's lovely plates and crystal drinkware. Given that this was our first time at an Uzbeki eatery, we asked our server for some suggestions. Upon doing so, she then asked us if we prefer meat or fish. After perusing the menu a bit more and taking her suggestions into consideration, we had decided to order a wide array of sorts, opting for the pickled herring and potato appetizer, some Tandoori Samsas, a bowl of the Kharcho soup, and an order of the Guyru Dumplings. Our dishes were brought out promptly and our server made sure to check on us periodically throughout our meal, at one point even offering to allow the kitchen to split some of our dishes up for us to make it easier to share with one another. The pallet of flavors we were presented with was colored and wonderful; the pickled hairing playing a perfect duet with the hearty roasted potatoes, pairing well balanced acidity and perfectly crisp potatoey goodness, the kharcho simultaneously lightly spicy and fully refershing with that dill coming throough alongside juiicy chunks of lamb, and the the delectable dumplings, swimming in a flavorful bath of broth and sour cream. As we were nearing fullness, we realized we had forgotten to add one more piece to this meal...the dessert! After this realization, we decided to share a piece of wonderfully sticky Phaklava, adorned with and generously filled with walnuts and golden raisans. Suzani Restaurant is not to be missed. It is a dining experience that makes me feel like you've been invited into someone's home, but also that you are sitting down for a royal banquet. We were invited out to dinner by friends - they wouldn't tell us where we were going - they picked us up and drove to Northern Philadelphia. We pulled into a shopping plaza and saw our destination - Suzani. I had never eaten in an Uzbeki restaurant - our friends, who had eaten there before said "...come hungry!" They recommended a few appetizers - we ordered the Potato with Mushrooms, Eggplant Salad, Achichuk, and Kutab. Let's start with the Potato with Mushrooms - which the menu describes as "Fried Potato Slices with Pan Roasted Mushrooms and Onions. It should say "Potato Chips with Pan Roasted Mushrooms". It was a very unusual dish, to say the least. While the chips were homemade and tasty, having roasted mushrooms and onions with them didn't work at all for me. It was difficult scooping mushrooms onto the chips - and the combination was not that tasty. The mushrooms and onions would have been better by themselves. Once the chips got soggy from the mushrooms, it was very unappetizing. Next, the Eggplant Salad - which was fried eggplant, red and green pepper, tomato, Korean style carrots, garlic and cilantro served in a soy sauce. It tasted fine - I'm not a big fan of eggplant, but the veggies tasted fresh and I had some of the bread they served with it. The next appetizer was Achichuk, which is a traditional Uzbek salad of thinly sliced tomatoes, hot peppers and onions. I did not taste the dish, but was told it was okay for spiced fresh tomatoes. The last appetizer was Kutab - which was a flattened shell, which tasted and resembled the exterior of a fried dumplings, with meat and onions on the inside. It was super thin, and tasted okay. We ordered our main dishes after we finished the appetizers. The couple we were with both ordered the Salmon Kabobs - I tasted the salmon, it tasted good, and was tender. I ordered the Lamb kabobs - the lamb was tender, but it was a little too salty. However, when I had a piece of the lamb with the saffron rice, it diminished the saltiness of the lamb and tasted fine. My partner ordered the Filet Mignon kebab. It did not come with the other 3 orders - the sever said it would be out momentarily. Almost 15 minutes later, I was amazed my partner didn't have her entree! I gave the server a 'look' - she went in the back and FINALLY brought out my partner's dish. The meat (Filet Mignon) was tough and difficult to chew. I took a piece of my Lamb kabob to compare - my lamb was very tender compared to the steak! Not only was the order overly delayed - it was below average. While the other dishes were acceptable - they were mediocre. I would like to point out we were there during the dinner hour and we were the ONLY patrons there during the entire dinner. I wasn't surprised. read more

Dropping a star because it did take food quite some time to come out, although I understand ten entrees is hard to come out, the appetizers took some time as well and half the entrees were the same. Would like to drop another star because the service was subpar but won't. The waiter was mingling with another table instead of checking in on us and I had to get up and ask him for the check. The decor inside is insanely beautiful from the ceilings to the walls. The booths are some of the nicest I've ever seen. We went with a party of ten! They had our table set up. Cheburek and dumplings were good. Came with sour cream and were huge in size, respectively. Meat platter : beef tongue, chicken roll, veal roll, roast beef, horseradish, mustard Not for the faint heart and low seasoning! Chicken Tabaka with fries- Insanely good and half a chicken was plenty of food. Uzbek Plov - really enjoyed this! Loved the carrots and the fat rendered from the meat! This was my first experience trying this particular cuisine. I had the exotic pineapple chicken and thought it was yummy -- not too impressive but certainly good. Came here Monday night at 8:30pm, we were seated right away, the whole restaurant was empty. Beef Samsa $4 - Reminds me of a steak roll you get at a Chinese store, had beef and onion, had a great flavor, would get again. Cheburek $4 - meat inside, but no onion? It was very empty inside a lot of space. inside, with just cooked meat. This was a bad dish and would never get it again, lacked flavor completely. Babaganoush $10.99, had a great flavor and the bread was warm and crispy/crunchy, which surprised me since I thought it would be softer. Overall, still good. Might get again, price makes me hesitate. The beef kebab had 4 pieces of meat on it and a small pile of lemony onion. This had the best flavor and tenderness out everything we ate, but was ridiculously expensive. $9 for just 4 bite size pieces. Might get again. Enjoyed the lemony onion flavor. Exotic Pineapple Sweet Chili Chicken $14.99 - tasted asian, flavor was good, not great, not bad, would not get again though. Can definitely taste sweetness and pineapple and the chicken, wasn't an amazing dish. Kutaisi Style Beef $19.99 - texture is in between hamburger and steak, flavor was decent, strange not like hamburger, but not like steak either. Not worth $20 honestly though. The hostess is also the waitress, barely spoke any English, barely understood any English either, which was hard, when she was trying to take our babaganoush and I told her " We still want it." and "We want to keep it here." and other ways to say it. She also didn't tell us that the drink she placed on the table was not the drink we ordered, and we opened it realizing it was peach carbonated water. It ended up being $6 on the bill extra. Just wish we had a disclaimer. It would benefit this restaurant to have someone speak English. Parking? Free inside the parking lot. Food? Hit or miss. Only things worth getting for certain IF COOKED the same way are the Beef Samsa and Beef Shish Kebab. Service? Good, just wish the restaurant had a better English speaking person. Date Night! After a long session of silence asking my wife where to go for dinner, we decided originally on Chinese and had a place picked out. Then, we had a change of plans for a place and type of cuisine that we've never had and we picked out going to Suzani. We had a very nice meal. The restaurant is BYOB, and we felt like we were the minority as we seemed to be the only ones speaking English! There were numerous large families having a very good time drinking, eating, and having good conversation. I think many were "in the know" about Suzani and we were just discovering it. Wife and I came with our case of Redds Black Cherry, and first we needed some descriptions of the food from our young waitress. She was very helpful with everything, and her only negative was that water was never brought to the table. The restaurant was having a prix fixe 3-course grand opening "expansion" menu, but the Yelp discount check-in price was only good Monday through Friday. Decided on going with the menu. Started with some awesome bagel-type bread and ended up buying another one. Hot, fresh, and airy, this bread a a major hit. My Bigard Salad (smoked duck breast, crispy brushwood, sweet rainbow from carrot and red cabbage in fried onion sauce, raspberry, and plum) was really good. Very colorful (see my picture) and the smoked duck tasted a lot like ham to me. Wife's eggplant salad (fried eggplant, red and green pepper, garlic, and coriander served with vegetable oil) was also just as colorful, and really good, but not as good as mine. This was not fully eaten, or taken home. Both salads were huge. Wife also saw a picture in the menu of something she thought looked good and ordered it. Turned out to be Uzbek Plov, which is rice with carrots, and meat on top. This was very tasty and almost reminded me of a simple peasant food. The carrots were really good and meat tender and flavorful. The two kebabs we got, shrimp and lamb, had one hit, and one miss. The shrimp was overdone and just meh. However, the lamb was a hit with raw red onion and a red sauce served in an espresso cup which was good. Almost tasted Greek with a forkful of lamb, onion, and the bread. Overall, we had a very nice time at Suzani, and would be back again. $62 including tip, no drinks as we brought our own. read more

I really like Uzbek food. As it's very similar to middle eastern in general but with a twist. The appetizers for me were even better than food. We got Bakhour salad which was amazing with quail eggs and beans tongue. Egg pant salad was more than good. Both the beef dumplings and samsa were very tasty. Also we got beef tongue and the potatoes with mushroom sauce as appetizers and both were exceptional. As an entree we got the special grilled mix kabab which was good but not the best. We were suffering from withdrawal after returning to Beijing from a trip to Russia... imagine our surprise when we moved back to Philly and discovered that there's a far better selection of former Soviet nation cuisine here than in Beijing! Suzano compares very favorably to several of the Uzbek places we ate at in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Kazan; great flatbreads, excellent plot, flavorful soups. The Russian dishes are good but not quite the same quality; for example, the stroganoff was decent but very heavy. read more

My friend and I were seated right away. We weren't even seated for 5mins and the waitress asked if we're ready to order. I told her it was our first time here and give us more time. I noticed the beautiful tapestries hanging on the wall by the booths. The booth seats are far from the table but you can move the booth closer. This place is byob and has a big parking lot. I ordered borsch soup which has beets, beef, and veggies. It was delicious and hearty. I was nervous about how the beets would taste but it didn't even taste like beets I also had the samsa with beef.. it reminded me of an empanada but just their version of it lol- delicious too! My friend got her entree but I had to wait 15-20mins for m Plov.. there was a large party present but only 2 waitresses. Our waitress did apologize for the wait. I just got off the airplane with my family and we're starving, and after searching online this place showed up first... I saw the images and they bought me right away As soon as we walked into the place we were welcomed with warm smile and were seated. This place is a hidden gem. It's literally located in a shopping center so you would almost never know it was there unless you head of it through word of mouth. We went for a dinner party recently and ordered almost everything on the menu from salads, drinks, to every kind of kebob you could imagine. All incredibly delicious. This is a local family favorite. We have a lot of Uzbekistan food options in North East Philly, and even Suzani Restaurant has now expanded to 2 locations. But this original location remains one of our most visited out of all the other options. For one, the decor here is adorable and cozy. When you come in, you feel like you've come to visit your Uzbek grandmother's house. The plates and silverware are stored in an old fashioned china cabinet in the middle of the room, there embroidered items everywhere, and the booths on the side provide the perfect comfortable and secluded dining experience. They've recently expanded this location too (just goes to show how popular it is) and now have 2 dinning rooms. The newer one is just as beautiful but is definitely more modern and minimalist in design. The huge perk of coming here over their other location (and over the other Uzbekistan restaurants in the area) is how quiet it is. You'll occasionally see a larger party here but the atmosphere is more sit down family dinner than partying and celebrating. The menu here is full of great options. There really is no point of recommending anything because no matter what you choose, it'll be great. read more

Can't say enough good things about my experience here. I can't personally validate the authenticity becuase I've never been to Uzbekistan but it the dishes served were unlike anything I've had. We started with some bread and butter which was a warm huge roll that looked like an oversized everything bagel with the hole filled in. We order seven separate dishes in total which arrived in no real discernible order. As we've never had this cuisine we couldn't tell the different between what was an appetizer and entree. The samsa was next which we each got one. It was a flaky, crispy hot pastry stuffed with chopped very tender thin strips of sirloin (think cheesesteak meat) and onion along with tasty seasoning. The Kazan kabab came out relatively early and was excellent 6 small pieces of bone in lamb on a sizzling fajita-style plate with oiled/buttered up potato slices. Some onion on there too. The dolma with sour cream was very tasty, an excellent balance between salty, savory and a touch sour. Tender grape leaves with cooked meat stuffed inside. The real prize of the show was the sautée from lamb leg (see pic). This was incredible and the waiter talked about how it was the real deal. It came out later on during then leisurely paced outing. We almost forgot we ordered it. We also ordered a dish that a looked like a form of Eastern European lasagna. That was good too but we were getting full by that time. Just expect an out of the box leisurely paced dinner. Not a place to rush through dinner like an American and be open to trying new dishes. BYO. read more

My family stumbled upon this restaurant on groupon, and it might be my single favorite groupon discovery. I can't really attest to the authenticity of the food, but I can guarantee that anything you get here will be cooked perfectly and delicious. I first went with my brother and parents. I had only tried Uzbekistan cuisine once before, so we stayed to the staples: lots of kebabs and more familiar dishes like rice plov, and grilled fish. To start, we got a beef and a duck salad. The greens were pretty fresh with just the right amount of dressing mixed in, and the slices of meat on both the salads were tender. We also ordered a plate of manti, Uzbek meat dumplings served with sour cream. The manti were soft and delicious, not lacking on meat at all and complemented the richness of the sour cream well. The plov, a rice dish with chunks of beef and bell pepper, may have been the most surprisingly delicious entree. It may not look anything special, but the rice was so flavorful and yummy I could have eaten a plate after plate of it. It must've been cooked with some of the juices or broth from the meat because it had such a savory flavor. I am 100% a meat person and the fact that I can't stop raving about this rice over the beef has gotta tell you something. My parents ordered a grilled branzino, which was moist and drizzled with a nice sauce. While it was good, the real stars of the dinner were the many kebabs we got: beef, chicken, lamb, lamb ribs, and salmon, all of which were seasoned perfectly and delicious. To eat with the kebabs, we ordered one of the circular bread loaves which came out crusty and hot. The meat came with a boat of housemade tomato sauce, which as great by itself, but if you're a fan of spicy food, I would absolutely recommend asking for some of the house made sautéed chili/hot sauce. Mixed with the tomato sauce or even the sour cream, it took an already amazing meal to another level. Suzani is one of the few restaurants where everything I have eaten, from the basic to the weird (like cow tongues!) has been perfect. The prices are fair and service is nice. TBH, we entered Suzani not expecting alot and man were we wrong. This place is a gem. I have never had such juicy kababs before. When i took a bite of the (Dolma) Grape leaves wrapped kabab, I couldnt believe the juiciness. We (party of 4) ended up trying lots of different things and everything was top notch. Uyghur Lagman Soup and Dumpling Soups were great. Turkish Liver was so different. We have had Liver in desi style all life but this was so different, lite and simple. Salmon with mashed potato was high end restaurants style Chefs Beef tenderloin kababs were amazing Lava Cake and Tiramisu were spot on. Tiramisu was not what you usually expect. It was chilled but very good. Regular coffee reminded me of Caffe Reggio in New York. The service was excellent. The waitresses were pleasant, happy, and helped us thru with lots of patience. We had three or four rounds of plates and cutleries changed seamlessly. The ambience and sitting arrangements are beautiful. Clean bathrooms. Very spacious. Wow! So we just found this little yet beautiful gem. We were looking for a place to eat and weren't sure what to have . We wanted something different and new. Boy o boy what a delight. The food was beyond words. We have been to Brazilian restaurants and the Kebab selection surpasses most of them. The meat cuts are clean. You don't get chunks of fats . Plates as LARGE is more than fine to share. It will be a water of money and food. So have fun and share a salad and a entrees. Disclaimer!! Yelp has this restaurant as Russian food but is not. The place look fabulous, the walls and seeking decorated authenticly It has great variety of food starting with kutabi with greens or meat, all kind of salads I highly recommend duck salad it has sweet dressing and garnished with prunes. The northeast is a mecca for Uzbek cuisine. We were excited to see Suzani pop up in the area! The place is absolutely gorgeous and as far as aesthetics go, this is my absolute favorite restaurant with this type of cuisine in the area... hands-down. Unfortunately, I don't feel as though the food matched the quality and taste of what I'm used to in the area. The kebabs were a little bland. They were out of mushroom soup. The pickled veggies were ok. Hard to mess those up. The veggie salad, again, just fair. The bread wasn't my favorite and different than what I'm used to being served in Uzbek restaurants. The most tasty item we ordered were the potatoes and mushrooms. Service was quick, but communication was a tad spotty as our server didn't speak much English. I also thought it was a tad pricey compared to the local competition. My parents who also frequent these types of restaurants came here and not only agreed with my last statement, but said it was their least favorite in the area. I'm so sad to write this review. I was really hoping this place will be high on my list because it so beautiful and sitting in those stunning booths is just so very lovely! However, Last time I've ordered Traditional Olivier Salad and it contained only from 4 ingredients: Kielbasa, pickles, green peas and mayo. Okay, fine, maybe they just got confused, I thought. Today I had another order. Olivier is good. But guys, you didn't put Chicken to Caesar Salad! The order was made for more than one person, would be better to put more forks, spoons and knives.
