My fiancé and I recently made our first trip to the bistro and we are lost for words. The restaurant is so romantic. We got escargot, clam linguini, and lamb and pork belly meatballs. They were all absolutely incredible. The escargot brought me immediately back to France - they were so good. The linguini was a perfect portion, and the sauce was incredible. Lastly, the show stopper was the meatballs. They were absolutely fantastic. Hands down the best food we've had in Lancaster. The drinks were also incredible. Our server, Rosie, was so responsive, attentive, informative, and kind. We absolutely will return soon as this has become our favorite spot in Lancaster. read more

We discovered this true gem years ago when they first opened, and they remain amazing. We mainly indulge in the bakery section but the bistro is delicious as well. We had a wonderful brunch at Bistro Barberet when we were visiting Lancaster for the weekend. The bistro has a bakery in the front and bistro in the back, with a nice bar. We really enjoyed Berberet Bakery! Gorgeous selection of delicate French pastries and very friendly staff at the counter:) Quiche Lorraine and Soup du jour (carrot bisque) were perfect for light snack between lunch and dinner. Bf and I shared a Ruby afterward, a Raspberry mousse cake, which was not only stunning to look at but also delightful - light, not too sweet, and creamy. There was also a cute gift section and we picked up a jar of local PA honey, Raspberry jam, a bar of milk chocolate, and two chocolates from the case (passion fruit and mint tea) to give as gifts and to enjoy ourselves. It was our first time visiting Lancaster and we were pleasantly surprised by this town and Berberet Bakery. Barbaret is so good! Starting from when you enter into the building, you are surrounded by pastries and beautiful desserts. You are able to just simply order the desserts for take out. Had dinner for the first time at Bistro Barbaret last night. Accolades first. The food was spot on, I had house beet cured salmon (exceptional), steak frites (cooked as ordered with a perfect peppercorn sauce) and for desert a Floating Island which is a wonderfully soft merengue on a sea of crème anglaise garnished with spun gold sugar (delightful). Now for the disappointments, keep in mind the restaurant just received the designation (and a bronze plaque prominently displayed at the entry) as a bastion of French cuisine abroad. Nothing about the service, the decor or anything else was in the same category as the food. The waiter was nice enough, but we could have been in any mid level US restaurant. The paneled walls are accented by insipid generic black and white photos hung pin the tail on the donkey style. No table cloths, and, and, printed in bold red at the upper left of the menu..."second bread service $2 per person", DC prices. Will we return? Yes, because the food was that good. read more

Love this place! The food, service, and atmosphere are lovely. This is my go to place when I'm craving dessert. There are so many options. The donuts are (pricey but worth it) phenomenal! I've had dinner a couple times too and both without reservation got seated right away. The salmon ceasar salad was so perfect. I love this place. I have been numerous times but am clearly remiss in not offering a review! Go! This is an amazing restaurant. The food is nothing but top notch. The restaurant is behind the amazing bakery so it's really hard to leave without some other unbelievable items... but buy them.... unless you are flying straight back to Paris when you leave, you won't be disappointed. I have been here with adults only, adults and kids... brunch and dinner. I have never had food that didn't impress me. It's also a great place to try or get your kids to try new things. And the service has always been impeccable. Try the escargot. You should try it at least once in your life. It's not served in shell-- it's really good and I've tried it many places. (I'm no connoisseur... mainly focus on how to get my nieces/nephews new experiences...) :)). And if this seems LAME because you are well traveled... try their amazing pate options or terrine... Returning to the more usual.... Their French onion soup is not quite as cheesy as I am used to. So that's a tiny bit disappointing... but the onions/broth/bread--. It's fab. I presume my cheese level expectation is an American vice. I still get it every time and love it. On this visit we had two people enjoy the hanger steak menu item... I had the chicken. They were all fabulous!! I have had fish here in the past, usually the daily special. ALL OF THESE-- soooo good... I was actually sad they didn't have a daily fish special (they had their weekend bouillabaisse and then a shrimp special....oh well) I should mention-- good bar, excellent cocktails-- both on and off menu. Yeah and remember, pre or post... get yourself some amazing desserts, croissants, baguettes... the list goes on....we may have skipped dessert but we went home with a wonderful box of six of their single serving desserts from the bakery... all were sooo good. Easily the best desserts i've ever had, but we'll get to that... First off, the restaurant entrance takes you through the bakery, which is full of beautiful, individually-sized pastries. Nice touch! The restaurant itself has a wonderful ambiance, and for being a large open room, is not overly loud. Service is super friendly and enjoyable. Food. Ok, so, this stuff is legitimately awesome! We started off with a few appetizers, specifically the Macaroni Gratin and the Alsacian Flammekeuche. The Macaroni is, well, one of the best mac and cheeses i've ever had. Absolutely amazing, and you should get it every time you come here. Don't even think, just sit down, say hello, and ask for a preemptive order of it. The Alsacian Flammekeuche was also pretty tasty, and it was unique, kind of a franco-allemand tortilla pizza. Definitely worth a shot, but just get two of the Macaroni Gratin. Main courses. Lots to choose from and they all sound awesome. The Prince Edward Island mussels are very tasty, and there's a huge portion. The veal schnitzel was incredibly tender, as would be expected, and perfectly cooked. The meat was pounded into a perfectly even slab and beautifully breaded. I think the best item, though, was the Prime NY strip. This is a weekly special, limited in quantity, and comes with the option of a bordelaise or au poivre sauce. Yes, sauce. It's french cooking, which is heavily based on sauces, so if you're a steak purist and refuse sauces, either expand your horizons or try something else. Also worth noting, the au poivre sauce is not just your typical, run of the mill pepper sauce. Everything in this sauce is perfectly balanced and absolutely exploding with layers of flavor (not just lazily putting as much pepper into a sauce as possible). This mixes extremely well with the pureed rosemary potatoes and almost forms an absolutely epic sauce. Eat them separately or mix them, either way the steak is insanely good. Dessert. They have some pretty epic options here, including any of the pastries from out front. We tried the profiterole and the floating island. The profiterole is a perfectly cooked cream puff, topped with a house-made dark chocolate hot fudge. Absolutely delicious, and there's plenty of hot fudge to just drink if you wanted to (if that's your thing...not that i did that... ... ... ok maybe i did). The other item we got was the floating island, which actually won a Food Network Chopped dessert challenge. This is an incredibly light and fluffy meringue floating in a delicious Creme Anglaise. This is honestly one of the best, if not THE best, dessert i've ever had. It's light, it's incredibly unique, and it's insanely delicious! And the best part is, it's so light, so you don't even need to save room for it, best of both worlds! Lastly, it's almost impossible to walk out of here without buying a pastry. Just do it, they're amazingly delicious, and the closest thing i've ever had to a Parisian dessert outside of Paris. Seriously, just get one, you're going to want to, so if you go here having already decided you're going to buy one, you'll save yourself a lot of time. Not sure what else i can say about this place, just go here and bring an appetite! read more

I wish we had all week in Lancaster to try out every single dessert here. Came here after dinner for a sweet treat and honestly, deciding on just one dessert became seemingly impossible. They recommended a few so we tried them! Order: -7 Layered Chocolate- Delicious flourless cake. It's really rich and decadent, must be eaten slowly. It's 70% dark chocolate so it wasn't overly sweet as well. Highly recommend -Costa Rica- Think of it like a slice of tiramisu "praline crunch almond cake soaked in coffee punch baileys cremeux and coffee mascarpone mousse." Really enjoyed how soft it was with a nice coffee touch. -Macarons- Tried the lavender, pistachio, vanilla, and caramel. They were all really good, but the lavender stood superior without doubt. Excellent restaurant that I somehow missed in the middle of Lancaster. A short walk down from the Marriot makes it super convenient, and it's now my favorite sit down in the city. If you're not looking you can miss it, but hopefully the front end bakery and its cakes catch your eye! The macarons are exquisite! Highlights: a lovely collection of goodies and pastry is offered out front in their bakery section, and your perusal will be assisted by a very friendly staff! I popped back in after my initial exposure to try the restaurant. And even when I felt a little underdressed, the wait staff made us feel right at home. No skimping on quality here! The food was amazing. I found this spot because my guest was craving real French onion soup and it did not disappoint. Not too salty, superbly made, and definitely worth the stop during our trip to the area. The escargot was generous as well and plenty as our appetizer. My group and I shared many dishes together, including the Lorraine quiche and croque monsieur with the added egg. All fantastic! We came on a weekend for lunch and it wasn't crowded at all. Impressive French pastry shop and confectionary in the front downstairs as this is what this review is for today. Among what you can expect, they carry eclairs (like a donut, but definitely not Dunkin), financiers (like a pound cake), madeleine style (think like a butter cookie), gateaus (like a cake), croissants... and yes, both macaroons and macarons (sorry, there's only one Blair Waldorf) and are open nearly seven days a week during the day. My memory is in a temporary fog much like Paris during the pandemic, so I'm forgetting if they have a espresso machine in the bakery (outside of the attached bistro) but you have lots of options in the square across the street for a solid macchiato or espresso, anyway. We had a reservation for 4 for several weeks and were seated in a makeshift table area abutting the bar. When I asked if we could sit in an empty table on the nicer mirrored side, we were told no, there was no flexibility because of their plans for the table that evening. We stayed late and only one party attended. This is the second time this has happened to us at Barberet, the first time being offered a seat next to the restrooms when multiple tables were available. There is clearly profiling occurring for "special" people. Other than the hostess, service was very attentive and friendly. They just seem short staffed and over worked, so they are bit harried. Seating is very tight with other people right next to you, and loud with a large group seating nearby. There are no table clothes or placemats. The hostess comes around when other people are finished and sprays cleaner on the tables (think diner). Water glasses are initially upside down, so you're basically having a serving of the cleaner residue on your water glasses and silverware and may be treated to an occasional spray to accompany your meal. The drinks were quite nice, but the wine list is limited and full of bottom shelf representations of regional wines without any pedigree except for a consistent $100 price. Wine glasses are a clunky dishwasher proof variety more suitable for beer. The food was pretty good in a bistro style, but $50 for a fatty ribeye swimming in sauce was a bit over the top. The quenelles look more like caterpillars than elegant dumplings, but the fish en croute was very nice, so I would stick with the dishes which showcase some of the bakery's talents. The desserts were all very good, but you'll get the best options if you pick something from the front of the bakery (but you have to walk up there yourself to order it). I don't think we'll go back. There are better options in Lancaster in this price range. read more
