I just can't say no to V&S. Although I've never actually set foot in V&S (at this location or the two others dotted across Reading), I find myself absolutely addicted to their subs. About once a month, a co-worker of mine says she's going to V&S and asks me if I want anything. I do indeed. And what I want is an Italian sub. They are so baller here. It's almost like a White House Subs level of fanaticism. So basically whenever I go down to AC, I make a point to stop at White House to pick up a giant sub before even checking into the hotel room. Then on the way out of AC after a weekend of debauchery, I stop by White House again and buy TWO more subs to take home. Whenever I order at V&S, I get subs by the pair. It's never just one. It's at minimum two, but I could definitely see myself ordering three at a time. That could last me the next day or two. A whole sub makes a great dinner. A half sub makes a great late night snack. The other half is a perfect lunch the next day. So what makes a great sub? Well, tons of high quality meat for one. Like, it needs to be piled high. Two or three layers just doesn't cut it. Then fresh cold ingredients, like tomatoes, lettuce, and onion. Next is high quality olive oil that pairs well with an exceptional red wine vinegar. Perhaps one of the most important components is a robust roll. And last but not least, a crushed red pepper relish that adds an extra bite to each, well.. bite. V&S has all of the above. In contrast, the hot dogs here are straight ass. I know, I know. Who gets hot dogs? Well, someone who relishes in the joys and heart complications of transfats for one. Mike from the Jersey Shore was known as "The Situation." You can call me "The Saturation." The hot dogs here are limp and shriveled. I'd wager 7-Eleven has higher quality dogs. On the plus side, if you ask for extra toppings - especially if you request them on the side - V&S is super generous. I asked for onions and they asked if I wanted them on the side. I said sure, so they included a big bag of fresh sliced onions. This was enough for the hot dogs and provided an additional cache of onions that I could sauté up with some chicken and veggies to make a completely separate meal. As I finish this review, I have a major hankering for one of their Italian subs. BRB, gonna place another order. read more

Their pizza was the BEST !! My friends and I used to buy pizza there but stopped . Before the pizza had alot of sauce and the crust was thicker . It was actually one of the best pizza around . I grew up in the 70s/80s just walking distance from V & S. Birthday parties and other special days always meant V & S! The shop was always packed and bustling with happy patrons. Then I moved away for college and didn't have a sandwich from here in like 30ish years. Until this week when I went home to visit. Not sure what happened but this isn't the V & S of legend. It's actually really, really bad now. Not "it doesn't taste the same as when I was younger" bad. It's "this food is terrible and the service matches" It was a ghost town in there. Whoever got their hand on this place... please bring the "you're family here" back or sell it to someone who knows the gold mine that is a properly cared for V & S. Never again! One of the worst food experiences I've had from a sandwich shop. I ordered a large cheesesteak and 2 slices of pizza. The sandwich was more of a crushed up hamburger than proper steak sandwich meat. No evidence of cheese or onions, which I specifically requested. But there was sauce. So much sauce that in the 5 minutes it took to get the food home, half the bread had liquified and it had to be eaten with a fork. I ate one of the slices of pizza the next morning and it was horrible. No sauce and no seasoning. They hadn't even managed a little salt. It was like eating nothing, yet still managed to cause me a full 24 hours of gastric distress. I threw the other slice in the trash. I recently went back home for a visit and thought I'd visit my favorite childhood sandwich shop. My family ate there often, and we'd come home from college and go right there for our favorite comfort sandwiches. My friend got a cheese steak because, well, that's what they were known for! It was a soggy mess. I got the eggplant sandwich. It was incredibly underwhelming. I was a little embarrassed to have built this place up for my friend - we were both surprised by how mediocre/bad they are. I talked with my family about it after and they said they didn't want to taint our impression so said nothing ahead of time, but they all agree: it's not what it was back in the day. A few days later we went down the street to Screpesi's, at my parent's suggestion, and it was delicious. In short: great prices, fast service, soggy greasy sub-par food. I'm not sure what's going on here, but the last two times I've walked in and ordered I've had cold cheese steaks. I live close so travel is not the problem I was the only order so no excuse it was so busy. I realize you make some meat ahead of orders as I worked in a sandwich shop already. Come on folks you gotta put the meat back on the grill n get it hot. If the meat is hot (not warm to get cold faster) the cheese on the roll will melt. Garbage food for garbage people. I've kept myself from leaving a review like this for this V&S location 'cause it's so easy to be mean in a bad review, but this spot deserves it. I've had a few things from the menu, but not everything, and I still feel confident saying that nothing here is made with skill or love. I've had subs prepared half-assed with chunks of onion skin, weird multi-grain long rolls that look like rye, barely warm sauces, you name it. No consistency or quality--just bad. These are cheesesteaks for people who don't know a good cheesesteak, and also who hate themselves. People who like the cheese fries here like canned cheese sauce and shaking salt shakers directly into their mouth. They're edible. I can say that. Actually the eggplant parm used to be something I'd willingly order, but man does it give Tommy the tum-rums. Most employees I've encountered have an attitude and aren't enjoying what they're doing. There may be exceptions. Always are. Ordering can sometimes be a Soup Nazi-esque ordeal depending on how busy it is. Clearly some people like this place, and I initially gave two stars to be fair. First things first, ordered a Cali chicken cheesesteak, no cheese on it at all. The bigger problem, the "now hiring" sign in the window. $8.50 to start, a maximum of $10 an hour for "experience." My sandwich cost more than an hour of a humans time according to them. No surprise the food sucks when you pay people so abysmally. Completely unacceptable for a business with multiple locations in the area. Pay your workers a decent amount. Save your time, money, and tastebuds. Go eat somewhere that doesn't suck. read more

The original location which has been here since the 1960s. Not much has changed here since I worked here in the mid-1990s in high school. They finally did add an indoor seating section several years ago with TVs. This is a place though that was always known for their takeout business and it is still their mainstay business. The 'cheesesteak/steak' specials on an ATV bakery hard roll is still a great value but you have to like pre-mixed fried steak and onions. Sauce and hot peppers are also available. Biggest seller by far and what they are most well-known for. The fries have changed though and aren't as good as they used to be. Cold cuts on the Italian sandwiches also seem like they are from a different provider too that isn't as good as they used to be either. It is annoying that Sam Mollica Jr (owner) still only accepts cash but I understand the reasons for that from both a cost and tax perspective. Sam treats his employees well and always paid notably higher than minimum wage. Customer service is a bit surly too but that seems to have been the status quo here for a long time even before I started working there. V&S Sandwich Shop is a decent sandwich shop but not for vegetarians let alone vegans. Berks County tradition but it is more because there really isn't a great sandwich shop around. Screpesi's Sandwich Shop down Lancaster Ave has been around forever and makes a better Italian sandwich. Lavigna and Sons is probably the best one I have been too recently but you have to drive 15-20 minutes over to Sinking Spring. read more

When we arrived, the 27 employees at the counter were just staring awkwardly into space as if they didn't know each other. However, the prices were dirt cheap, they were very nice, and the food was decent. $23 fed 4 people with drinks. I have to admit the outdoor decor gives you that Walking Dead, 5-years post apocalypse kind of look, or maybe a nice spring day in Chernobyl. Still the inside is spacious and clean.
