Only reason we came here is because of Amar. It's worth it to try once for the novelty but don't think I would come back. We ordered the oxtail, octopus with potatoes, chicken cannelloni, and piquillo peppers for the main meal. Only complaint in terms of the food is that the potatoes that came with the octopus were barely cooked and seasoned - it looked as if they had just cut open the potato and served it. Everything else was pretty solid - though portions are extremely small. I understand it's tapas but they literally only give you one piece of oxtail for $26 - that's insane. For dessert, we ordered the flan and tres leches. Both okay but not really memorable - honestly on par with Whole Foods dessert. I've been to Madrid, Spain many times and I can tell you that the food is delicious! I wanted to try and find something comparable and Vaca came up in one of my conversations so I had to try it out. I really had this on my list for quite some time so I decided to go there for my birthday. Coming from the DTLA area, we were lucky to get a 10 pm seating on a Saturday night so the drive was a breeze. The restaurant location is unassuming and there is valet or free parking in the structure across the street. We were on time and seated in the back, outside patio. Our waiter and runner were great and very friendly, but we came here for the food. I am a lover of dry aged steaks and there is probably one of the best steakhouses in Madrid. Does Vaca's 50+ day aged stack up? Well...Let's say it was good. Before that 2# rare ribeye showed up, we started off with some Brussel sprouts, octopus, shrimps and bone marrow. I won't bother you with the Spanish names so you will have to view the menu yourself. Each was also tasty. I wish the octopus was a whole leg and grilled a little bit more, but then again, my only reference is what I had in Madrid. The bone marrow was delicious and fatty! The shrimps were not quite what I expected, but still a treat. Now for the ribeye...Presentation was excellent and I always ask for my steaks rare so you can get all of the flavor. I was able to eat all but the bone and one slice. Those I took home to gnaw on later. For dessert we opted for the churros and chocolate. The chocolate was a little on the dark chocolate side, but still good. The churro was more of a cake batter consistency instead of a traditional churro. First a wonderful house margarita with a touch of spice, which came fast. we picked a board of meats and cheeses and had to run off to work. So back later for a truly delicious meal! There aren't that many good Spanish restaurants in Southern California aside from Viva Madrid in Claremont and the former Pueblo, one of my old favorites that used to be on Hyland in Costa Mesa. I was excited to see when Vaca opened near South Coast Plaza a few years ago. We've been here several times, and everything is always delicious. I love being able to share plates and get a little taste of everything. Some of our personal favorite dishes on the menu are the paella, the Bikini Sandwich (melts in your mouth), the roasted cauliflower, Gambas al Ajillo and the patatas bravas. Spanish restaurant offering a diverse menu of tapas and large format family style dishes. Located near South Coast Plaza, the interior is clean and contemporary. There is a beautiful bar with ample seating, as well as indoor and outdoor tables. They have a fantastic beverage program, with an extensive list of Spanish wines and sherries. If you come here in the winter, make a reservation for an indoor table. The outdoor patio was poorly lit, sparsely decorated, and cold, even with the heat lamps. Fortunately, our group of 6 was able to be moved to a table inside. You must order a cocktail. Their "Espresso Martinez" was the most unique rendition of an espresso martini I've ever had, featuring Brucato Woodland Amaro, barrel aged gin, Black Forest Kirschwasser, and a coffee infusion, as opposed to straight espresso. The result was light and complex, a far cry from the dessert in a glass that this drink often is. Stand out dishes, beloved by everyone at our table, were the ultra-buttery, melt in your mouth Erizos (sea urchin) Con Huevos, deeply savory Coliflor (cauliflower side dish), and Bacon Wrapped Dates. The Patatas Bravas and Pan Con Tomate were great renditions of classic tapas. Everything else ranged from just okay to bad. The Piquillos Rellenos were heavily breaded and soaked in oil, encasing slimy peppers and a disproportionate amount of cheese. The Vieiras a la Plancha were candy-sweet, and the charcuterie was low quality for the price. The Churros Con Chocolate were dry but edible, unlike the gummy Basque Cheesecake and completely flavorless Manchego Panna Cotta. Overall, a good meal, great drinks, great service. I am unsure if we will return, but if you love tapas and cocktails, VACA is certainly worth a try. read more

Prices is about right for nicer place, not cheap but not ridiculous either. Where it fell off was we were by the register closer to the exit out back and staff would gather there; cursing out loud, one waiter sold another a used cell phone, and one would yawn outloud stretching like they were not in front of customers. *COVID UPDATE* More people are getting vaccinated, and state regulations are getting more lenient these days. It's almost back to "normal" here in Costa Mesa. Masks are required on restaurant premises, and tables are socially distanced. This restaurant has so much space that they have indoor dining, outdoor dining in the front, and outdoor dining in the back! I called on a Saturday night to make a reservation for a party of two, but their earliest time was 9:30PM! I took it anyway since I really wanted to try their food. The parking lot for Segerstrom was free and really empty. They do have valet, but the valet lot seemed full. They're located across the street from the South Coast mall and just before the Segerstrom Center. I had to google what "vaca" meant, and it is "cow" in Spanish. I felt like if the restaurant was named after "cow", then I had better try their best "cow" dish. I had the Vaca Tonic $14, which was the house cocktail, per my server's recommendation. It was a blended cocktail drink and just superb. I can see why it's the most popular. I liked the Apiary $15 that my husband ordered as well. For tapas, the rabo de toro $16 was the oxtail dish. I wasn't a fan of the sauce, but the meat was so tender. You gotta eat up everything to really enjoy it. We also tried the ensalada de remolacha $14, which was the beet salad, just to get some veggies in. It was good, but small portioned and too fancy - not worth the $14 - for us. He picked out a prime beef rib steak ($55/lb) that was just under 2 pounds. It was more than enough for the two of us; we took home maybe a third of it. The server showed us some photos of how the steak could be cooked, and we decided on rare medium. I could be wrong because it was so dark in there, but our steak seemed more rare well than the rare medium that we chose. Regardless, it was delicious. We had the paella valenciana $52, which had the seafood. This is a must try. I fell in love with this dish!! I felt really inclined to order beef dishes, but I'm so glad I got the paella. They had a 3% surcharge for COVID, which seemed optional as stated on the menu. You can imagine this isn't a cheap dinner. After coming out of the house (staying at home because of COVID) and spending this much on a meal for two was a huge shocker. This place is very vibe-y. It might be fun to come out with a small group for the drinks, but it seems like the tapas aren't worth sharing. read more

I've been looking for a decent Spanish restaurant serving tapas ever since returning from my trip to Spain and Portugal. It's been a few years and my hunt takes me here, reluctantly. Admittedly, the place is really nice and has a romantic ambience but that also comes at a high price tag. The food is more fine dining and not so much tapas but I haven't found a traditional tapas place equal to that of Spain and Portugal. The only food that wowed me was the Canelon de pollo ahumad which was recommended by the server. I really was looking forward to the paella but this one here was disappointing. For $65, the portion was puny and lacked flavor. A typical paella should feed a few mouths, but I could've eaten this up and still be hungry. The straw that broke the camel's back was the server trying to deceive me. I ordered the Albariño over the hacienda. Both are white wines that I've never had before. He brought it out and I drank it wanting to try the other. When I ordered the other, he then told me it was out and the one I had drunk was the hacienda. I was reluctant to try this place already and my dining experience just confirmed why I was reluctant. It's one thing that the food is mediocre and priced too high, but to be deceived is something I won't tolerate. This place is really good for dinner, lunch, and as a meat market. They have a very good selection of both cured and raw cuts, including my favorite...iberico pork. But this review is based on my lunch there. So I ordered the wagyu burger, the frozen drink, and the rojo potato balls (I can't remember the name). Burger: great choice of cheese for the burger, and the onions are a nice touch. I ordered mine without mustard and I'd suggest u do as well. You don't waste meat like that by making it taste like a 1 dollar hot dog. Now, im not the biggest wagyu fan...but this burger was on point!! Cooked however u like it, mine was medium. And the fries were really solid as well. Potato balls; these were on the tapas menu...just great!! Cooked perfectly, came with Rojo sauce but had enough flavor in the meat inside of the balls that you didn't even need it (although it was nice and I used the hell out of it). Drink; I shouldn't have bought this, it is their signature drink, which generally means, no alcohol. It tasted great, but I would have not quarrels serving it to pre teens because it had no alcohol. Tip: never get signature cocktails!! Either order well liquor with a diet coke, or byol, order a diet coke, and mix it in the bathroom. The drink is literally the only thing keeping it from five stars. The staff was awesome. My waitress was super nice and was the one who recommended the awesome appetizer. Food came out just how I wanted, and it tasted great!! Its not a cheap place, but not insanely expensive either for what you're getting. Our first time trying out this restaurant. From the photos and reviews we felt the need to pay this place a visit. Made a reservation online prior to coming (A MUST). To start, we ordered the Erizos con Huevos, Pan con Tomate, and Coliflor Side. For entrees, we went with a 12-oz New York Steak and a Canelon de Pollo Ahumado. All the dishes came out full of flavor and in its unique way. I loved the presentation of the Sea Urchin, where it is served inside a Sea Urchin shell. The slices of toast were a little salty, however, it was okay. The steak was cooked at the right temperature. It was tender and overall a good piece of meat. Left the restaurant satisfied and full. Came for an anniversary dinner. It is by the Sergestrom across South Coast mall. You can either do valet or park across at the lot. Place is beautiful and has great ambiance. Started with some tapas: -pork belly with apricot: way too sweet and the pork belly was very tough -calamari: not spicy or crispy enough, the red peppers were sweet. But had an interesting flavor -bone marrow on braised beef cheek toast: my fav one. Wish it came with more toast though. Totally get this! -beef and potato balls: I expected a Porto's potato ball type but it was more like half meat/half potato so it fell apart very easily. Flavor is ok. Main course: -The 55-day dry aged ribeye was what we were looking forward to the most. Asked for it med rare and it came out perfectly cooked. There is a pretty thick layer of fat FYI. It's heavily salted but the meat did melt in my mouth. Tbh, I can't really tell any improvement from a regular 28-day aged steak vs this one. So I can't say the price was worth it. I've had better steaks. It came out to about $120. We did not have a choice in size so it was 2lbs about. We did enjoy the house made Worcestershire type of sauce. -For our greens, chose the roasted Brussels sprouts with chorizo and sherry vinaigrette. It was so good. Chorizo was quite salty but I just ate less of that. Highly recommend this side. Service was lacking in my opinion. Server's presence was elsewhere most of the time. When we were ready to check out, it took quite a long time, maybe 30 extra minutes. He did stall to bring some almond financer cake with chocolate ice cream at the end for our anniversary which was kind. But it would've been more timely to have that prepared when we were almost done eating. Overall I'd give this a 3.5 stars. It's definitely worth checking out. Any special occasion. Came here from a recommendation and had a very pleasant evening. My husband and I agreed it was a high 3 out of 5, so we rounded up to 4. We ordered embutidos to start with jamòn serrano fermìn, ibèrico chorizo, and 3 cheeses (manchengo, mahon aged 12 mo, and caña de cabra). All of these items were delicious and the accompaniments were also delightful. From the tapas we ordered pulpo a la gallega, piquillos rellenos, and panza de cerdo. The pulpo a la gallega was incredibly tender and delicious and probably my favorite dish. The piquillos rellenos we also delicious, but I think my husband enjoyed them more than I did. I'm not sure I was too fond of the cheese it was stuffed with, so that is my personal preference and not a mark as to the quality of the food. The panza de cerdo was probably the most disappointing. Unfortunately, this was far over-cooked. The meat was horribly dry and chewy and the sauce did very little too remedy the texture. We abandoned it after each having a small piece. Since we were celebrating my birthday, I received a special almond cake that's off the menu. Additionally, we ordered the tres leches and churros for dessert. (We wanted to try them all and our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomachs). The almond cake was absolutely delicious. It was a small, dense cake that was not too sweet, but balanced perfectly. The tres leches was very well made and the fruit accompaniments were fresh and went well with the cake. The churros were churros. They were delicious and made fresh, but nothing too special about them. The dining area was a bit cramped. We felt like all the tables were practically on top of each other. The restaurant is pretty small, so it makes sense they were making do with the room they had, but it was a little uncomfortable and the table next to us did start to get very loud as the drinks came out. read more

Was torn between 3 or 4 stars but decided if I had avoided the seafood and the paella I would have enjoyed my meal. Great bar, fantastic service, transitional modern decor, and nice ambiance. In total we ordered 6 tapas and the seafood paella. The paella was a big regret and any dishes containing seafood was not great. The erizos con nuevos (sea urchin with scrambled eggs) was particularly bad. Scant bit of stale urchin did nothing for the dish so definitely need to skip this dish. The paella was undercooked and the seafood in the paella was over cooked. Perhaps it was an off day but for me I would definitely stick with the land protein. Overall a nice early dinner after a day at South Coast Plaza. We did not make a reservation but showed up right when the doors opened at 5pm. Parking is valet or free in the lot across the street. If you aren't getting apps, then you'll definitely want some sides. The shrimp ceviche came with gosh I think 3 maybe 4 shrimp. I can't remember sorry. It had great flavor, and the shrimp was perfectly tender. I loved the sauce and was eating it by the spoon (classy I know!) The bone marrow was also very good but we had asked if there was an order that came with the meatballs on top and we were told that you had to order it separately. We later found out that wasn't the case. The "salad" that was served on top of the bones was good but didn't really go together. I get they were probably trying to cut the richness of the marrow w/the acidic salad but eh, I would've rather had the meatballs soaked in marrow! :P Pan con tomate was also very good and served up "cute". I wish we didn't order this because you fill up they give you a lot of bread in the order. By the time the meat and brussels arrived I was FULL. I managed to eat a few strips of steak and some sprouts and both were really great. I think I would've order differently next time, either steak & sides only or less apps and steak or just apps only. The service was great but the food wasn't as amazing as we expected for the price point. I liked the egg in the sea urchin and love the presentation but it was my first time trying sea urchin and the texture and flavor is not for me. I enjoyed the shrimp dish but it was unexpectedly very spicy. My friend liked the tuna and the uniqueness of strawberries. I got the beef meatballs which were supposed to be wagyu but the texture was soft and smooshy so I didn't like that. The flavors were good though. Others got the paella and it was ok. We were sat at the patio with an amazing view of the beautiful Christmas tree with heaters all around our table. The inside looked really cozy too. They didn't have the octopus, iberica ham?, a few other tapas we wanted to try. The ones we did order were very small portioned. We got: Sea urchin scrambled eggs - the presentation was so nice but it wasn't good. The eggs were over cooked and bland, the uni was also incredibly bland Scallops - very over seasoned and the little burnt piece of something on the top of the scallop overpowered the whole dish. The lobster sauce was good. Pork belly - blah Fried artichokes- didn't know what we were eating, skip this Brussels sprouts - these were really good. Cooked and seasoned perfectly Patatas bravas - these were really good too and would be even better if they were crispier. Paella Valenciana & paella Mariscos - this is what we came here for and we were thoroughly disappointed. It was too salty for me to be able to describe any other flavors there were. Churros with chocolate- the worst churros I've ever had. These were cakey and crumbled instantly and super dense. The chocolate was good and rich. Overall, the food was either too bland or too salty. Service was good and attentive. They kept wanting to change our plates, which was nice but felt unnecessary at times. Parking is at parking structure directly across from the restaurant. This was my second time to La Vaca (Moo!). This place is USDA Prime! Amazing flavor in every dish. Love the variety here--so it's perfect for large parties where you can try numerous dishes. Precisely our scenario; there were about 10 of us celebrating Dan the Man's birthday and we ordered many dishes. I tried to capture most of them as you will see attached in my review. Service was great and the ambiance is perfect for dates or again for large groups. Everything I tried, I really liked. So unfortunately can't steer you one direction or another; just depends on your preferences. Only gripe about this place is the parking; either you park across the street in a parking structure (sounds like they validate) or you Valet. We chose to Valet so my pregnant wife didn't have to walk so far. Bring your pocketbook, this place is a little pricey, but well worth it for a special occasion. read more

Gorgeous interior, great customer service, awesome food. The architecture of the restaurant is beautiful. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the entire menu, offered us plenty of choices and described them in detail. She was very tentative considering we were a party of 6. Loved the food here! Ambience is nice. Smaller than I expected. They have a parking structure and you can get validation from the restaurant. Service is good here. They are attentive. We ordered some cocktails which were ok. Food here is Spanish style small dishes and it's a-little more on the pricey side for the amount of food but the taste is there. We got the New York steak which was good. The croquettes were also tasty and the Brussels sprouts had like a sweet balsamic glaze. Would come back for a birthday event. read more
