Although Diane and I had been to a Mastro's Ocean Club several times, we had never before dined at a Mastro's Steakhouse. We found them to be very comparable: classy, sophisticated, and praiseworthy for both food and service. Celebrating Mother's Day for two mothers, and my granddaughter's 14th birthday, we began with a nice assortment of bread products, Shrimp Cocktail, and Bigeye Ahi Tartare. The shrimps were large, and the tuna melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I could not finish a large crock of French Onion Soup, and only ate half of Mastro's House Salad, which was riddled with shrimp. The part left behind sufficed nicely as an entire lunch for me the next day. While I selected flaky Chilean Sea Bass for my main, Diane splurged on a Jumbo 14 oz. Lobster Tail, and my daughter and granddaughter both opted for a 16 oz. New York Strip Steak adorned with Truffle Butter. For sides, Diane liked her large loaded Baked Potato, and I was fond of the ceamy white Scalloped Potatoes. For dessert the birthday girl enjoyed s slice of complimentary Special Occasion Cake, while Diane tried a dense slice of Pecan Pie, and my daughter and I shared an order of Chocolate Covered Strawberries. Came for the Mother's Day brunch at $150/person and left disappointed. Half the spread was standard breakfast stuff: eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes. The quality was one step above a complimentary hotel breakfast, and nothing that tasted special enough to justify the price. The seafood tower was tucked at the very end of the buffet line with one person in charge of passing things out, so you had to wait through the already long line just to get to it. Also, it felt dishonest for them to advertise a "seafood tower" on the menu and not actually give out a seafood tower for the table when people are paying $150/pp. There was ONE carving station for the entire restaurant which meant you'd have to endure a 15+ minute wait just to get a plate, and some people waited even longer. And they only offered one complimentary drink (including coffee) per guest. And if you wanted a soda, you'd have to pay $5 more. Insane and stingy for the price. Our group ended up over $1,100 all in and it was a total rip off. Disappointing experience coming from Mastros - totally felt like a cash grab. read more

He made sure that the food that I had was safe for me to consume with my gluten allergy and even brought me my dessert to the table for me so that I didn't accidentally eat something I shouldn't. The seafood buffet was fantastic. We miss the buffet at The Balboa Bay Club, and the seafood served here was comparable. I expected the carving station and the pastry selections to be a little bit more expansive and the branzino that I was looking forward to was a bit on the dry side. Our server Drew was fantastic and really wanted to make sure we had a good time and that we got everything we wanted and more. It's a two story restaurant, dim lighting, red and yellow background lights throughout the restaurant, employees moving left and right, etc. It has such a great vibe all around. We ordered our favorite Chef's Rib Eye Cut (33 oz), Eild mushrooms with truffle butter, garlic mash, creamed corn, and Mac n cheese. Of course, bread service is always a must. I had only been to the Mastros in Beverly Hills and had never noticed this one by south coast plaza. I came here for my works holiday dinner party. There is self parking available nearby but I didn't want to walk and it's also paid so I just did the valet parking. They have a beautiful entrance with the main dinning area and bar downstairs. For bigger groups they have their event rooms upstairs where they have a set of restrooms and everything you may need. Our room was very nicely set up and there was staff welcoming as we came in. For our event, my work had already ordered some AMAZING appetizers and they had a small menu for us to choose from. The seafood tower was spectacular! It is huge and a beautiful presentation. We had one per table which was a lot of seafood. Everything was very tasty and fresh. The skewers we had for the table were very nice and easy to share and pick different flavors. I had the lobster bisque which was very creamy and rich. My main course was the lamb rack which was delicious! It was cooked perfectly to a medium rare. The lobster tail with it was tender and perfect. I loved that they offer the option of individual portions of their butter cake as it's my favourite!! This place I have a love and hate relationship with. The service is very up and down. I only like it because it's close to my apartment. And they have a quiet dining room area that's intimate and if they get my reservation right and seat me and my party there, I'm a happy camper. But if they seat me in the bar area where the singer is, I'm hating life because it's too loud and I can't hear my own thoughts and I get horrible migraines. Mastros is my favorite restaurant. The steak is delicious ALWAYS. They never mess up. The only thing that does get messed up is where they seat me. That can mess up my whole night. I don't like hearing people sing or being next to the singer. So when they ignore my request it bothers me. However, the sides of mashed potatoes SANG, buttery and perfect pairing to the filet mignon. For drinks: Drew recommended the berry dream which had ice smoke when it was poured, it was the an ideal complement to the steak. If you want a celebratory drink with a nice presentation its a MUST I have had Mastro's in New York and for some reason, Costa Mesa is just MUCH better. Up till our first ever visit here recently, I'd always only heard about Mastro's reputation of offering the very highest of fine dining experience, with top class service, and exquisite food ...and prices....to match. So, my expectations had already been hyped up and my wife and I were excitedly looking forward to our very first visit, for my birthday. Everything seemed to go well from the time we drove up to the front door, were greeted nicely by the valet, who then took our keys and directed us through the door and into the restaurant. There, a nice young hostess greeted us, noted our reservation, and told us we were a little early (a few minutes before dinner opening time), and asked that we please wait a moment while they prepare our table. Incidentally, this place is a very classy, beautifully decorated, but kind of dark ....so be sure to bring some kind of flashlight to view the menu. As soon as we were seated, we were again welcomed by our server who was very nice, professional, and attended to us with great patience and understanding.......you will understand why I mention the last part later. What we truly appreciated was that he honestly tried to make us as happy as possible with our dining experience here. So, my wife is a big lover of steaks and she knew exactly what she wanted....she ordered the 24oz Porterhouse Steak with a separate side of Brussel Sprouts and Broccolini for us to share. I went ahead and ordered the Norwegian Salmon with a 1/2lb of King Crab Legs as an add on to go with it. Oh right, we were asked if we would like their basket of bread at the start...not complimentary....so, just to give it a try, we said yes. Yes, the bread was very good and clearly freshly made.....we almost finished it all. My salmon was cooked perfectly....very fresh, very moist, and absolutely delicious. My king crab legs were not bad, but I expected better for $90 for a half pound......the crab meat was not as plump and juicy as I had expected, but it was ok. My wife was not happy with her Porterhouse steak (cooked medium), however. She said it was very tough to chew and could not be eaten with ease. We then called our server over, explained the situation, where he proceeded to explained that Porterhouse steaks are typically a tougher meat, but that he would gladly exchange it for something else, if my wife liked. She then chose the Bone in Ribeye, also cooked medium, but that it would take another 10-15 minutes to be prepared. According to my wife, the wait was worth it as the bone in ribeye was excellent! Unfortunately, in our server's haste to get our food out asap, the steak slid of the plate and onto the table as he was serving it.....oh oh! As for the sides, we had requested that both the broccolini and brussel sprouts be unsalted. The broccolini turned out excellent, was not overcooked, and tasted delicious. However, we could taste that salt had been added to the brussel sprouts by mistake, but our server admitted that it was his mistake and not the kitchen's. Things obviously didn't go smoothly for us this evening, but we were very happy with the meal ending desserts though. I was presented with a complimentary Birthday cheesecake, which was absolutely delicious, even though I am not a dessert person, but I finished it all off anyway...it was so good. My wife went ahead and ordered the chocolate sin cake, and she absolutely loved it! Ok, so all was not lost this evening as the desserts kind of helped out the somewhat disappointing evening. However, for the price of this fine dining experience, and the very lofty expectations we had for a perfect dining experience, this sadly did not quite meet our expectations. And to make matters worse, I am a Landry's Select Club member, but was told that Mastro's is not included in their group of restaurants......so, no points, no rewards, no benefits, etc. read more

My husband, kids, and I went to celebrate our anniversary--this has been one of our go-to restaurants for special occasions. My boys are well-behaved, and we always make sure they are respectful in nicer settings. They were using their iPads at a low volume, nothing out of the ordinary. Unfortunately, the manager approached our table and addressed the situation in a very rude and condescending way, saying the iPads were too loud. It wasn't so much what was said, but how it was said. The interaction made us feel uncomfortable and honestly unwelcome, especially on a night that was meant to be special for our family. We completely understand maintaining a certain atmosphere, but there's a respectful way to communicate that to guests--especially regulars. This experience didn't reflect the level of service we've come to expect here. My go-to is a dirty Belvedere martini with blue cheese-stuffed olives, and I've had this drink all over the country. Hands down, this was the best one I've ever had. Not cheap--but absolutely worth it. Served ice-cold in a chilled glass with the shaker on the side (very full), plus extra olives. Pure perfection. Our waiter was amazing, friendly, and patient with our large party, and gave us great recommendations. Every dish was delicious, and the portion sizes were incredibly generous. I was full before my entrée even arrived! Just a heads-up: the bread basket is dangerously addictive. One note: the lighting. It was so dark, none of us could read the menu without using our phone lights. I didn't even realize my king crab fried rice had mayo until I lit it up! We literally kept our dessert candle lit just so we could see what we were eating. A little more light would go a long way! read more

I mean does it get any better!!?? I've never been disappointed. Filet was delish-simple and top quality. Au Gratin potatoes were sooo rich and creamy. Asparagus was fresh and cooked to perfection. Key lime pie was sooo good (and key lime pie isn't even on my radar) Mango sorbet was like eating a fresh mango-packed full of flavor and so so refreshing. Our waiter was French-and every single detail was taken care. So professional and we all really enjoyed his attention to detail and professionalism. Our room was a tad dark - but had a beautiful view of a sculpture outside our window. read more
