While vacationing in California, this restaurant was on our must try list. The restaurant is located in a really beautiful spot by the marina in Newport. The inside is elegant and charming. We started with the Wood Fire Octopus - 10/10. It was outstanding. So flavorful! The potatoes and shishito peppers were a nice touch. For my entree I had the Fish and Chips - 10/10. This was delightful. It was paired with fries, peas, and a curry remoulade - omg sooo good! I loved the peas. For dessert we had the chocolate budino - this was a hazelnut streusel paired with some caramelized bananas. This was also a 10/10 - so delicious. Our waitress was wonderful! She gave us some great recommendations and was very friendly. Overall, we had a lovely dinning experience! Everything was exceptional! A note for parents: they had a high chair and a kids menu. We came for lunch as a large group to celebrate Father's Day. The restaurant ambiance is nice albeit loud. The service could have definitely been better. Our server was not attentive nor was he available when we needed him on several occasions throughout the meal. You could tell he preferred to serve other tables. The food however was good. Most of the dishes we had were delicious but it's overpriced for what you get. Portion sizes are just right though. Dessert menu sounded okay, if a bit generic. We passed on it. You're essentially paying extra for the location and ambiance. Maybe if we had better service on a day of celebrating, we would've left with a better rating and experience. Tip: Park in the free lot across from the entrance to Lido House. There was plenty of parking on a Sunday afternoon. read more

Tried this nice restaurant in Newport Beach. Service was great, as they were flexible and allowed us to move up our reservation to meet our scheduling needs. They also accommodated us well with a baby dining with us, giving us a high chair and finding a place to store our stroller, so that was very much appreciated! The ambiance was great. Classy and upscale and not giving off too trendy of a vibe. We certainly enjoyed the decor and how the restaurant was set up. We started with the Wood Fired Octopus (9/10) for our appetizer and it set a nice tone for the rest of the meal. Octopus was cooked to perfection, not too chewy, but with a good texture and bite. The potatoes, sofritos, chorizo and sauce were a fine compliment to the dish. For the main entree, I ordered the porchetta (7/10). It was cooked well, over polenta and was pretty good. The porchetta had a bit more fat than I would normally like, but the pork and polenta was very flavorful and I enjoyed the dish. I also ordered The Ritual Cocktail (9/10), it was very good, with the perfect balance between the bourbon, some sweetness and smokiness. Very well crafted cocktail. Traveled to this place after hearing it was comparable to a Michelin star Restaurant. The menu looked amazing, I started off with their version of an old fashioned (Ritual) after looking at the bourbons they had available and what they priced them at, all pretty much overpriced. The old fashioned I selected used buffalo trace which sells for $23 a bottle and the drink was $19, great mart up for them. The appetizer was Octopus, which was just ok, the sauce was the star of the plate, my entree was a braised short rib, which was probably braised chuck roast. The server was great, service was fast, however some of the people next to me were super snobbish, complaining about the smoke coming from my drink super rude. My husband actually came across this spot on OpenTable or Resy and made a reservation for us to check it out--and I'm really glad he did. We started with the Caesar salad, which sounded unique with kale and capers mixed with romaine. It did not disappoint--my husband took the first bite and immediately loved it. For mains, we ordered the Fable Burger and the 12-hour Kurobuta porchetta. The burger was next level, especially with the addition of pork belly--it added so much flavor and made it stand out from a typical burger. The porchetta was also a hit: perfectly cooked, tender, and paired so well with the polenta. We ordered the kids cheese pizza for our toddler and we were surprised how big it was. While the hostess who greeted and seated us felt a bit uninviting, I didn't let that set the tone for the evening--and I'm glad I didn't. Tyler was our server and he was phenomenal. He walked us through the menu with enthusiasm and offered recommendations. What impressed me most was how involved the GM, Alejandro, was throughout the night. Both he and Tyler checked in on us multiple times, making sure we were enjoying our experience and celebrating our anniversary well. Their hospitality truly elevated the night. The ambience is warm and intimate, and I always appreciate an open‑kitchen concept--it adds such a lively, connected energy to the space. The food and cocktails were absolutely delicious. We had some dietary restrictions among our party and they were so careful with helping us through the menu and making sure we knew which dish shouldn't be eaten by that person. The food is amazing! My husband and I just went to Fable and Spirit for the third time. We started with the Guinness brown bread as we have every time. The fresh bread with the European butter is melt in your mouth good. For dinner, my husband ordered the halibut, which is what I ordered on our previous visit. It's a really nice meal with excellent flavors and it won't leave you overly stuffed. Meanwhile, I tried the chicken confit, which was an enormous meal and I brought half of it home. The chicken is laid on top of yummy brussel sprouts and Spanish chorizo. On our other visits we tried the short ribs and a couple of brunch items, including an omelet and a pancake dish. I would recommend coming here for dinner rather than brunch because it has a nice dark and vibey atmosphere inside. Perfect for a nice romantic dinner. There's also a great wine menu and when I picked a unique wine off the menu our friendly server offered me a sample before I finalized my order. I appreciated that! First time diners. Had an early reservation and the place was nearly empty when we arrived, and quiet. Thirty minutes later the place was packed and the volume grew accordingly. We started with cocktails and the marrow bone appetizer, which comes with two bread slices, grilled onions, a small salad, and some sea salt. I recommend skipping adding sea salt as the bread was already salty, but definitely add a bit of grilled onions. The salad was good on its own; was too much on the toast. We ordered lamb chops and the fable burger. The lamb chops were good but the burger was delicious. It came with grilled onions, pork belly, and a Dijon aioli sauce which was the bomb!! Excellent truffle fries too! I give it a rating of 4 as the chef is a bit heavy handed with salt. Lighten it up and I'd give a 5! Also, as much as I appreciate water refills, this was too much. I am no stranger to Fable & Spirit and I'm surprised I haven't reviewed them until now. While I could go on with how great my dinner experiences have been (cocktails, Guinness brown bread, fish & chips, burger) and the glamorous Hollywood Regency/Gatsby aesthetic, what really prompted me to write a review was my first brunch experience with them! For drinks, my husband started off with a gin spritz which was refreshing and not too sugary. I wanted herbal tea but all they had was black, so my server got creative and put fresh mint leaves in hot water which hit the spot! For food, we shared the sourdough pancakes with lemon mascarpone and blueberry compote alongside the shakshuka (with extra poached eggs on the side). Both meals were incredible! The pancakes were the perfect amount of sweetness as the batter was not overly sugary to account for the compote and mascarpone. Both have been such a great experience, with quality meals. it's a perfect date spot, weather for brunch or for dinner, the patio has warmers. The inside is such a vibe, and has a great bar. Kona Kampachi Crudo: yellowtail fresh from Kona island seasoned with diced pole tomatoes, crispy taro, Hawaiian sea salt and topped with the amazing yuzu wasabi aioli (latter just made the dish). Pretty light so perfect for appetizer. Highly recommend. 3. Blueberry Meyer Lemon Brioche Bread Pudding: blueberry compote with crème anglaise. Wasn't bad but nothing exceptional. 4. Rabbit Fricassee: Canadian hare (dark meat) cooked to perfection. Super tender and not gamey. Served on top of a potato puree (tastefully done) and baby turnips and wild mushroom. Taste like turkey honestly. Very good. But my mind kept playing tricks on me with thoughts of the cute little bunnies in my neighborhood. 5. Wood fired octopus: super tender and chewy octopus. The Porchetta was juicy and tender with a nice crispy skin, while the polenta was also perfect consistency. Cracked Peppers Bucatini: 9/10 the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, the sauce was robust with flavors of clam and parmesan, and the pancetta gave a nice crunch. We loveeeee fable and spirit! Have been here a few times and it is always a hit! The atmosphere is intimate, dark, romantic with smells of their Smokey old fashioned. We started with the greatest menu item of all time, the bread and butter, this is the only photo I took and all you need to get here it is simply the best. We got 3 apps, the beet dish which was a surprise to us being a dumpling, it was fantastic, and also got the rabbit. The rabbit was exactly how the waiter explained, it tasted like turkey, not my favorite but beautiful presentation. The mains we got the porchetta and the pasta dish, the porchetta is good very fatty but good, I'd probably pass on it next time, the pasta is the best dish. Their menu is a little limited but offers a variety of small plates, salads, and large plates. Between the four of us, we tried something from each category, and these are some of the dishes that really stood out to us: * Guinness Brown Bread: Loved this, give me 10 of them! It comes in a small loaf, sliced up, and is so soft and slightly sweet. Add the butter on there, and it practically melted in our mouths. * Crispy Calamari: This was fried perfectly. I hate it when they overly coat the calamari, but this wasn't the case. It was lightly coate,d which gave it the perfect light crunch. The calamari was tender, and the dipping sauces on the plate were enjoyable. * Wood Fire Octopus: I've been on an octopus kick lately, and this one hit the spot. It had light, crispy edges from the wood fire andwas served with potatoes and shishito peppers over a delicious sofrito sauce. * Wood Fire Pizzetta: Small round thin crust pizza cut into 4 slices. Loved the mix of textures and flavors with the creamy burrata, broccolini, garlic, and hazel nuts. * Smoked Short Rib: The most tender short rib I've ever had. Packed with flavor and perfectly cooked. We also tried the cracked pepper bucatini and the 12-hour kurobutta porchetta. These were enjoyable, but were honestly a bit on the heavier side. I love bucatini, but the dough was so thick that it took away from the rest of the dish. Our waiter seemed distracted or too busy with other dinners, so much so that we placed our drink and food order with the bartender, not our waiter, almost 30 minutes after we were initially seated. Food: Do not get the fish and chips, it was highly recommended but it's highly disappointing. The plating was awful, they didn't give you enough fries, the fish was okay but I would never get the green peas. The calamari was okay as well as the mussels. I did love the bread. The pork chop was a 3/5, we found a string on it and had to report it to the manager, the burger was okay 3/5. Thankful for the free birthday dessert. The octopus was 4/5, Brussels sprouts 5/5. The alcohol drinks however was a 1/5. The cosmopolitan didn't taste like a cosmopolitan at all, they out the wrong olives on the gin martini. Chicken Confit was too dry for my taste, but the Fable Burger was epic. So why 4 stars? First off they tried to fit 7 of us into a space that really should only hold 4. We had to ask to be moved. The place is extremely cramped it's clear they are trying to fit as many people in as possible It's also impossible to hear the people you are with. Very bad acoustics and the music didn't help. While the establishment positions itself as an upscale community 'fable,' the reality behind the bar is a dark narrative of prejudice. The bartender did not simply provide poor service; she engaged in active discrimination by refusing to serve my husband based on a visible disability--callously mischaracterizing a medical condition as 'drunkenness.' Even when a professional clinical explanation of the disability was provided, the staff doubled down. This wasn't a 'misunderstanding'; it was a deliberate refusal to acknowledge the dignity of a person with a disability. In a space that claims to be 'progressive,' the overt disregard for the queer and disabled community is a stain on the Newport Beach dining scene. We had a nice celebratory dinner in this beautifully appointed restaurant. The bar is a great focal point, and the cocktails coming out of it are beautiful, unique and very tasty. The bread was REALLY good. If it was socially acceptable, I would have eaten that for my meal. Alas, we ended up getting two of the crudos, which were delicious. The halibut was a great choice for dinner and filling enough - the mushrooms were a tasty touch to the dish. Fable and Spirit is such a cute spot for a date night. The drinks are unique but somehow work and taste great. The brussel sprouts were crispy and full of flavor (comes with pork belly). I also got the burger, which was really satisfying and came with Parmesan fries on the side. Buffalo trace, maple , chai, allspice and burning sage. Very easy to drink. Slightly on the sweet side. Branzino as substituted for the Alaskan halibut listed on the menu $52 celeriac, chanterelle English peas , guacnciale, citrus nage. Wonderful crisp skin and wonderful flavor on the fish. Guinness brown bread $12 - alway very good. A Mille here ... $20. Always good Brussels sprouts $17 and octopus $30. Very good Bread pudding $15. Very good but I want to try the cheesecake next. Had dinner at the bar. Started with an Old Fashioned and it was really nice. I had three dishes: Hawaiian Blue Prawns, Wood Fired Octopus & the Heirloom Carrots. Everything was prepared to perfection. The ambiance of this restaurant is casual but sophisticated at the same time. Staff was friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend a visit. The roasted carrots were supwe flavorful with chimichuri and cheese and the ravioli with beet sauce filled inside were delicious especially because in any other setting I don't like beets but in this ravioli it tasted so good. Octopus was okay I've had better and my husband had the burger that was burnt from a side and he gave it a 1/10 lol so overall some stuff was good others not. Also, how do you just run out of one of your best sellers pasta main dish like how do you not stock your kitchen up to have ingredients for one of your MAIN dishes?? Smh. waitress gave me a tea on the house which was nice but overall mediocre experience. read more
