Seriously DC? Seriously? This is the saving grace for pizza in this area. You guys really dont know good food do you. The only reason I didn't give it one star was because of the price. And I didn't wanna be the only person to give it one star. The crust seemed stale, there was either no sauce or too much sauce & the cheese was pretty much non existent. i grew up in ny and to the little italy jersey shore transplant from 30 years ago: i think 30 years have acclimated your tastebuds to the dc area. the best pizza you'll find, is in staten island. that said, it is vace deli. they don't just sell pizza, they have a little store going on. they sell a bunch of fresh-frozen (as opposed to dried) pastas, lasagnas, canneloni, etc. they have pizza sauce, mozzarella (they have buffalo as well as polly-o), wines, little chocolate items by the counter, beer, soda, ice cream, as well as a few other specialty items that i can't recall. they also sell a couple of deli items (prosciutto, ham, items that go on their sandwiches). it's not your typical deli, their selection is very limited. what i wouldn't mind seeing here is an onion, mushroom, herb selection so if i decide to make my own pizza/pasta at home, i can really get everything here, but that's probably asking too much. so back to the pizza. i've had the pizza four times. it has never impressed me. it really is hit or miss, even within the experience. on a single slice i'll have varying thickness of crust/crunchiness/flavor. their sauce this time actually gave me heartburn (and i have a stomach of steel). the cheese wasn't melted and the pizza was cold. they need to fix their sauce (maybe it was a bad batch?) and train their pizza guy to make the dough more evenly thin and have their oven at the right temperature which would explain the crispy crust (where you hold the slice) and cold cheese. there's no consistency to it but it's edible. definitely not the best pizza in dc. that said, the star rating goes back up a little because the counter service is pretty decent here. the lady who works there is the nicest. read more

I love Vace pizza. It's the closest thing to NY style pizza you can find in DC. Mind you this is a grocery store with takeout so it's not really a restaurant--- its a "GROCERANT :D" It's close to the Bethesda Metro and you can also shop around downtown bethesda on a nice day while eating a slice of pizza. The homemade pastas and sauces are very good as well. A couple of times I bought the shells and lasgna when I had a couple of friends over for dinner but was pressed for time to cook. Too bad they don't deliver pizza. But the number of times I see people coming in to pick a whole pizza it seems many don't mind. I just popped them in the oven and later... poof! Grab a bottle of wine next door while you're at it. This is a grocery store too, so you're trip there may wind up being more than 10 dollars if you buy olives, pasta, etc. There's the garage down the street on Bethesda Ave. and on Wisconsin if you want garage parking, otherwise there's a small lot and street parking. Larger lot parking is across the street if you can get it. read more

Their food is delicious but they are incredibly SLOW and the older lady who works there is incredibly rude and and moody. She gives me an attitude every time I go. I don't know why I go back because the food is not worth the attitude. read more

The food is very good. Having said that try to avoid the older woman with her hair tied up in a net. She is extremely confrontational. Very bad service from this lady. Everyone else is fine. I ordered turkey and got mortadella and when I walked back 3 blocks in the bitter cold she had the nerve to attack me and say mortadella is what I ordered even though turkey is the only sandwich I order when I go there. She also tries to over charge you any chance she gets even though the prices are clearly listed on their menu on the wall. But that's another argument that she blames on you the paying customer. read more

I give this place 5 stars because that's how many stars that would need to align for me to ever eat here again. I say this not because of the pizza which is pretty good but because the customer service stinks. If I could give negative stars, I would. My husband and I went in at 7:15pm on a Saturday night and ordered a pizza to go. After waiting until 8:00pm in the store, the staff informed us that they had forgotten to put the order in. Not only that, they said that the kitchen was closed and they could no longer make it. Did they run out of pizzas? The staff handled the situation very poorly and offered a lackluster solution to the problem - a refund. After wasting 45 minutes in there all we wanted was the pizza. We were in shock over the lack of customer service. What a shame - we live in the neighborhood and had enjoyed Vace in the past - but never again. read more

As someone who works and lives in Bethesda, I have been pretty disappointed with the pizza selection in the area. I heard about Vace from a co-worker so we figured we would give it a try. It is definitely the winner of Bethesda's best pizza. They also have a bunch of other Italian food, but we have only had pizza from there so far. The only thing I didn't like about it was during our first trip to try it out the employees were less than friendly. The girl at the register took a minute to look up from her cell phone and made sure to let us know that we were the last order of the day and they "let us slide" when we ordered at 8:35, since even though they close at 9:00 they clean the oven at 8:30 so they can get out of there. The pizza was worth the death stare though, so we continue going back. The other visits we made sure to order between 5:30-7 and have had no issues with aggravated employees :) Definitely our new Friday night pizza tradition!! read more

Interesting pizza, what with the sauce on top of the cheese. It is its own thing, but it most certainly NOT "New York style" pizza (take it from a city boy). We went to Italy this summer, and went to Vace after returning to keep the vibe going. It's got some good stuff, even gelato, so if you squint just right, you can pretend you're somewhere on the Continent (just don't try saying "Grazie" to the lady behind the counter, you'll get the evil eye, I think she's Latina). read more

The pizza is unique in the area -- heavy on the sauce and lighter on the cheese. It works, because the sauce is fresh and flavorful. The italian sub is authentic - excellent meats and cheeses, and crusty fresh roll. Do yourself a favor, though and ask for capicolla and skip the mayo -- just go with oil and vinegar! read more

MY love affair with Vace pizza goes back to the previous location when you could sit at the bar at Bradleys which shared a basement with Vace and have Val bring you a pizza through that underground, buy him a drink (Dewar's I want to say) and share a slice with the bartender in exchange for a couple napkins and their looking the other way at the outside food coming in. Pizza is a personal thing and I am sure many wont go for this style of minimalist 'za. But for those who appreciate it, it is an exceptional example of the species. read more

I'm not normally one to write a 3stars review but I thought this place deserved it. The grocery part of the store was well stocked with all kinds of yummy Italian food supplies. The selection was pretty good and seemed authentic. I went in to order a sub sandwich as was sorely disappointed. The guy helping me was rude and seemed annoyed that I ordered a meatball. He even said "you know that's going to take 10 minutes, right *sigh*". I don't know what he was sighing about, I was fine with waiting 10minutes. The sandwich selection was poor (only one hot sub available) and the sub itself was ok. It was mostly bread with a little bit of meathball, peppers and sauce. Love love love this place!! The pizza is the best around, and so cheap, too. I usually get cheese with double mushrooms. (I think it's about $9.50 for a large and $1.10 for the first topping, $.90 for the second.) I just wish they were open later!! I've also tried their pre-made veggie lasagna- it's super yummy and a really easy dish to prepare if you don't cook but are having people over. One time I was in there I noticed a woman bringing in her lasagna pan- I guess you can have them make it in your own dish! My mother also loves their eggplant parm- every time she comes into down she has to stop at Vace to pick some up (along with some pizza, of course). The pesto sauce is also delicious, but it's a bit pricey ($5 I believe for a small little container). read more

Superb "hole in the wall", off the beaten track (though only half a block from Bethesda Ave) in Bethesda. This is our go-to pizza place for the 12 years we have been living here, and for my wife's family who have been here since the 1960's. For something different, try their white-onion pizza, made with sweet vidalia onions and cheese. (Pizza available by the slice too.) Also their cold cut subs are to die for. Try their frozen "homemade" lasagna and pasta products. All sorts of marinated olives, artichokes, cold cuts, Italian imported goods, coffee, wine, beer, etc. (Good beer & wine store next door too.) We have been shopping here for years, possibly since it first opened. The pasta is terrific. They will make cannoli for you while you wait. We have enjoyed food for our family dinners from here for several years. This time we put together a spectacular luncheon feast for 22 people at our church, selecting from VACE's catering options: 1 medium meat&cheese LaSagna, 24 spinach/ricotta cannelloni with sauce, and 20 cannoli. I heated the main courses as directed, made 2 big salads, put out pitchers of limeade and ice water, made a pot of coffee ... and what a delicious meal ! Effusive compliments and "where did you get this?" queries were numerous then and are arriving by email! read more

After hearing about this place for a while, I finally decided to try it, and I must say, it's really amazing. Their pizza is absolutely incredible, probably one of the best pizzas I have ever eaten in the DC area. The downside is that they only do take out (no place to sit) and parking is not very easy, but still it's well worth a trip. Try it and you'll love it.
