My favorite taqueria in Milwaukee, and a hidden gem of cheese curds. The airstream interior is a highlight, which is not something that can be said of most restaurants in Milwaukee. There's plenty of parking, plenty of seating, and plenty of tacos on the menu. My favorite though is the enchiladas, and I credit vagabond with my love for the dish. Riverwalks hippest bar and restaurant ...Utilizing the American legend, Airstream Campers in the restaurant decor is a true lexicon which is amplified by the festive and inviting vibe. Amazed that they were able to fit three large Airstream and retrofit them into bars. Taking a stool and having your bartender serve you from inside the trailer was epic. The menu is distinct and suggesting which concentrate on finer Tex-Mex covering all palettes including meat, seafood and veggie. It's dope! read more

Absolutely loved this place. The drinks are awesome ; the food is amazing ; the bartenders are very sweet and most of all - the management is so attentive ! It's a very lively place and gives lot of positive vibes. The ambience is very unique - the bar is setup as a food truck, the place has outside seating as well as lots of space for inside seating. Do ask for their house special out of menu - Sangria It's a custom made and the best in Milwaukee by far! Summer Shandy (lil fruity) was my favorite thanks to their recommendation. Honestly some of the best tacos I have had and for a fair price. I am not sure I would say it was the best but definitely up there for sure. All the tacos I had were very flavorful. The sriracha chicken was probably my favorite next to the shrimp taco one. The place also had a very lively feel to it and had a small parking lot which was nice to know we didn't have to park else where to eat here. 10/10 will go again. read more

So let me just start out with the fact that the food here, is really quite good. It's flavorful & interesting for sure. My Blueberry Basil margarita was also really good & fresh. Their label is "small plates" is uh, interesting. I ordered nachos and a taco, thinking "small plates" meant... well, small. They weren't! They are quite large, actually. Tasty, but larger than expected - not sure if that's actually a bad thing? Anyway, expect larger. Our waiter was awesome. He was really prompt, super nice, chill dude who got everything right. The vibe is pretty cool. I like the decor & style of the restaurant. The location was fantastic. What I docked them points for were two things : 1) the hostess was straight up RUDE. As in, zero Personality, didn't greet us, didn't say a word - and when we requested to sit outside - she just changed course to the patio, plopped our menus down and walked off without saying anything. We watched her do this to multiple people too, so it wasn't just us. Look, everyone can have a bad day - but the hostess should probably greet customers. She sat us directly in the sun, and turned and walked off miffed before we could even ask to sit under an umbrella. Luckily our super nice waiter moved us to the shade. 2) we had to endure a super rowdy, really ridiculous, overly drunk bunch on the patio - and so did all the other diners. I'm not talking having a good time slightly annoying group that you can tolerate (we have all been that group, lets be real), I'm talking overly rude, nasty, insulting group. One girls boobs actually came out, and everyone on the patio had to hear about who she was going home with, and in great detail if you know what I mean. I actually felt bad for our awesome waiter. The host should've used her attitude to give them the boot. Anyway, I'd definitely go back regardless. Could've just been the night - but hopefully we will get a better hostess next time! read more

Vagabond has excellent food which makes up for the lackluster service, expensive drinks, and borderline too loud music. The menu pricing is odd because they price with taxes in mind so things are $4.93 or $3.77. The interior is definitely cool, but it can be a bit drunken clubby at times. I've seen drink girls block the entrance while they grind on one another because "Omg! I love this song!" But the food is delicious. I had the hangar steak burrito and it may be one of the best I've had in the city. It's not huge but it is stuffed with tender meat, some of the most flavorful black beans, cheese, and rice. The designer tacos are pretty good but the Kung Pow needs a little more sauce. Overall the use of green and red peppers is a little heavy handed. The free chips and salsa are very good. The salsa rojo I could swim in. The Verde was heavy on the cilantro which I don't care for. And the third ghost pepper salsa had good heat and flavor. I had a strawberry standard margarita which was only $6 but my dining partner had a double Bourbon and Coke that was $8 for rail Bourbon and flat Coke. Beers were $5.50. read more

I'm not one to leave a bad review but felt compelled to write one following my experience last night. My wife and I opted to order the 1/2 pitcher margarita as opposed to individual glasses. Pricing structure was $9/glass and $24 for the 1/2 pitcher. We received the pitcher and upon pouring our first glasses the pitcher was gone and didn't even quite fill up both glasses. Not being one to complain, this was irritating to me so I mentioned this to the server and simply asked that she just charge us for two individual glasses rather than the 1/2 pitcher since that is all we received. Seemed very reasonable and a simple solution. While she was nice about it, she came back and said her manager explained that the pitcher sizes will vary based on how the bartender makes them, but because it was a 1/2 pitcher there was more tequila used and equivalent to 3 glasses as opposed to 2. I told her we never wanted "stronger" drinks but just more than 1 apiece. We were still charged $24 for the 1/2 pitcher aka 2 glasses of margarita even after nicely asking about it. I'm perplexed at how a restaurant can handle such a little issue so poorly. Be advised when ordering pitchers that they max out the amount of ice and overcharge for them. read more

I love the ambiance here; all of the decor and mini trailer set ups are unique! Parking is also quite convenient; although in downtown, Vagabond has its own parking lot! Remember - Vagabond is an American-Mexican place so don't compare this restaurant to an authentic mexican joint. I only went there for appetizers so I got the chicken nachos. While we were waiting for the nachos the waiter brought us chips and 3 different types of salsa. They were very tasty! One was mild, another was smoky, and the final one was spicy. When the nachos came out they looked delicious. The shredded cheese was melty and the chips were topped with flavorful salsas, sour cream, avocado and beans. It was exactly what I wanted when I was craving nachos. Next time I will try the tacos; just from the menu there looked like there were a lot of options to try from! read more

Let me start off by saying their tacos are pretty good (compared to Bel-Air) butttt the real reason I give them 1 star is due to the following - The majority of servers get basic orders completely wrong, which usually doesn't make me mad, especially when I'm hungry because I just want food. All of my yeses to this Mexican restaurant! It's, as the kids say, hip. Seriously, they had a DJ mixing music that I had never heard of before but desperately wanted on my iPod. Great music, upbeat atmosphere. The decor reminds you of food trucks meets subway system, but in a not dirty way? They brought the outside IN to their restaurant! I sat at the bar, which was basically the side of the food truck. Definitely an experience I've never had. They had the Bucks game on the TV and looked to be the spot to be before the game (or during too). The food met your standard Mexican cuisine expectations. Chips and dip was my go to for appetizer. I got the chicken enchiladas, smothered in sauce and cheese! It was a good portion as well, I was full by the time I left. The location itself is tucked away just around the corner off of Water street. A friend and I grabbed dinner at Vagabond before attending the Milwaukee Rep. I had never been and loved the atmosphere. It was a Friday evening so the DJ was warming up. The service was very good so we never felt we had to rush to make the play on time. The food was incredible, although more filling than it looked to be. Next tome I eat here, I want to stay a little longer and see the crowd come and go. As we were leaving it was getting busier. Lots of fun, great food and cool decor. I want to like this place, I do. The decor and ambiance is so fun and the location is great for pre-theatre/downtown experiences. Unfortunately, in a city burgeoning with really great tacos, this ain't it. Stopped in last week with a friend, great service experience - friendly, responsive, efficient. It's just that the food and drinks aren't that good. I ordered a house margarita on the rocks with Patron and salt on the rim. It arrived quickly with no salt, and honestly tasted bitter and stale, not refreshing at all. The complimentary chips and salsas are good, actually, but for some reason you get about a tablespoon of each salsa, and the server seemed confused when I asked for more. Also note, any refill has an additional charge (it was this way pre-COVID, so). I ordered the Argentinian steak tacos - I will say that the meat portion was generous and well cooked, but the sauce was so watery that the tortillas melted within minutes of being served, which kind of ruins the whole thing. The other contents were bland. It's not awful, it's not great, but if you're really looking for excellent tacos, this ain't it. Maybe the other entrees are better. read more

It is a cool vibe and appearance at Vagabond. But I'm really not here to see cool things, this isn't an art gallery. I'm here to eat and drink, number one. There are a lot of interesting margarita choices on the menu. I opted for the watermelon - because yea! That's unique! It was $9. The glass was very small and there was barely any liquor in it so not at all worth the charge. I was disappointed and would not order it again. For sustenance, I ordered 3 tacos which then gets me the sides of beans and rice included. I was excited to see pasole on the menu, a Mexican soup that I've had several times and before and LOVE. It was in the "sides" section so I asked the server if I could have that instead of beans and rice. She agreed. Out came the food. I went after the pasole first and was so excited. All for a terrible, terrible let down. That pasole was horrific and should be changed or taken off the menu at once!!! That concoction would put any homemade dish I've had to shame. It tasted excessively like tomato (canned at that) and like an enchilada sauce, not a rich, delightful, "soupy", slightly spicy, flavorful broth that I know and love from south side home kitchens. Restaurants are "supposed" to do things better than we can make at home, right? That's why we pay them? The tacos: Banh Mi - was the preferred one on the plate. Decent, I liked it. Orizaba Brisket - it comes with brisket, jicama and pablano slaw -- really, a "slaw"? Strips of pablano laid in a corn shell doesn't really constitute "slaw" to me. Either somebody did something wrong or the menu is written wrong. And honestly, I agree with the menu... when some dry strip of meat, jicama and piece of pablano are laid in a corn shell, nothing is bringing it together a slaw would've been nice. Total let down. Argentinian steak - forgetful. And I can't remember but either this one or the brisket were over seasoned to the point in really stood out and prevented full enjoyment of the taco. People pointed out the odd "similarities" with Bel Air to me. I'd agree with the copycatting angle and find it disturbing that Vagabond couldn't come up with their own ideas. One last thing: the salsas. Mild, Medium and Hot the menu says. Not really, more like mild, mild and hot. Also the damn containers they come in!! Can you possibly make it any more difficult to get to the salsa with the chips? I really could have whipped those stupid, poorly designed, small metal vessels across the room. read more

Another ounce of garnish might bring them to life. (The "slaw" on the Orizaba Brisket taco was five or six slivers of jicama.) Delicious though they are, when they arrive at the table, they look like me lying on the beach after a Wisconsin winter. Not that there's anything unattractive about that. Fate and destiny aside, I like Vagabond. It's a fun, interesting place to be. The drink choices (a wide variety of American craft beers and margaritas) are solid and the tacos--despite the me-on-a-beach-after-a-Wisconsin-winter analogy--are quite delicious. There's no better rating criteria than leaving happy. The decor is really great at Vagabond, and it's very cool that they have a parking lot attached. Parking is usually a nightmare in this area. They have someone watching over it, too so don't think you can sneak in and not go to Vagabond! I was disappointed in the food, though. I didn't think their salsas were good at all. Either mild with no flavor or too hot to try. They were also really runny and hard to dip. Again, they need to change the consistency or change the serving ramekins. I was really excited to try the Corn Esquites appetizer because I love versions on this street food, but it was pretty bad. They layer it in a small glass dish so I thought when I got my first spoonful and it was 95% mayo, it was my fault for not mixing it up. Well, I managed to stir it up but it was still SO mayo-y and unappetizing. I doctored it by adding some rice and that helped some. I decided not to get a drink this time around, but tried a friend's raspberry margarita and it was so, so sugary and artificial tasting that I was glad I left that area of the menu alone. I tried the short rib tacos and enjoyed them but because of my overall impression, I don't think I'll be back. There was a 8 min gap between saying hi, getting the chips, getting the drinks and taking our food order. I think it's the guy's first server gig. However, he was polite and gracious. If you're looking for the traditional sweet margaritas, this is not it. Get one of the classic ones. We sent it back and got the strawberry one. Much better. The manager was kind enough to swing by and clarify the types of margaritas. We ordered gringo pollo, mango shrimp, hanger steak and Argentinian tacos. The chips and complimentary salsa was really good. The best taco was the mango shrimp. The steak tacos... There seemed to be a flavor component missing, like some sauce on top. The flavor profile of the mango shrimp was really good. Wish it was the same for the steak tacos. I just got a mouthful of slaw. Not sure if I will be back. Not going to actively seek it out. Maybe if someone else wanted to try it. Bel Air is better as the general consensus goes. Again, the atmosphere is so cool. Wish the food was just as exciting. read more

Vagabond. This review wont be that lengthy. Vagabond is a Mexican foodery that in my opinion is the hip hop version of Bel Air Catina. I am sure that they dont like that much. It is true and you don't have to re-invent the wheel, but you can make different versions. The interior is excellent and they used Rudy's old space and made it into what they saw their vision as. The music hip hop scene is all over Vagabond. They have the wall of speakers that mask a DJ booth i didn't know was there. They also have the RV they sold food from before the brick and mortar and they used it in the interior and decor. The food was almost the same as Bel Air. I had the chicken taco and it was bland and not seasoned at all. The chips however were good. I stopped in on a Tuesday.So it was 2$ tacos of course.The menu is kind of confusing. I am not a fan of adding big name or things we common folk cant pronounce to your dish to make it appealing. Again, more style then substance for me. I probably wont go back to Vagabond. I will go back to Bel-Air seeing that they have more locations and the mystery tequila shots. Sorry Vagabond, valiant effort. I just think that creating something more authentic or different from Bel Air beyond the hip hop theme could give the eatery much more. read more

What a trendy hipster bar! My friends and I were out celebrating a 30th birthday out on Water St. and we stumbled across here around 1:00am. It was so much fun. They have these trendy trailers that are the bars and a bunch of indie hipster lighting above the dance floor. Drinks are cheap, music is fun, and the outside area was nice. Overall the ambiance was intriguing, they really went all out with the street taco theme and I was really digging it. Throw a pitcher of margaritas (strawberry peach) in there and the place starts to look even cooler. The food...let's just say I've had better...tacos. I was a little adventurous and I tried 3 different tacos from their menu (the special was buy 3 get your rice & beans free): Mahi rojo- just ok, too much slaw, not enough fish Avocado tempura- very sour- I think the combination of wasabi cream and pickled vegetables was better in theory Duck carnitas had a nice blend of flavors but again too much cabbage, not enough duck. The saving grace was the duck chicarron but I wanted more! It's a great spot to grab dinner and then run out to the bars/catch a show. Definite plus for having some off street parking. Recently, I came here with a group for a bachelorette party. When we arrived, we were able to be seated right away. For a Saturday night, it wasn't crowded, which surprised me. Vagabond has the look of a 50's style diner, but with a Latin twist. They serve amazing margaritas in a variety of flavors. Before my visit here, I had never tried a watermelon flavored margarita before. I decided to step out of my comfort zone and try one. It was actually very tasty! The menu here has a small variety of burritos, enchiladas, and salads, as well as appetizers. However, they have a large variety of tacos. Beef, poultry, pork, seafood, and veggie: there's something here for everyone. The taco's are individually priced, so you can create your own taco platter with as many or as little as you want. I decided to try the Guero Beef tacos, which contain ground beef, chihuahua cheese, lettuce, tomato, and sour cream. I thoroughly enjoyed them. They were very flavorful. I absolutely want to come back here and try the other varieties of tacos. With the $2 taco promotion on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I will make sure to visit on one of those days. read more

Hi. So here's the deal, I really like this place. Pretty good salsa, great chips. The atmosphere is neat with the old aerostreams throughout. Great music. The lighting is fun, and the chairs are heavy. On to the food. Better than any taco I've had at BelAir. Hands down. (BelAir is the Colectivo of coffee. I go to colectivo because of the atmosphere, not for the crappy service and the coffee. I go to BelAir for the...well...shrimp fajitas, not for the 3 hour wait, mediocre service, and bland tacos). The spicy pork taco was FINALLY spicy. I'm so over all of you mexican restaurants using spicy as a headline, and not delivering in the product. Vagabond is so cute! I love the starlights, speaker wall, patio, drinks, and food. Their tacos are super unique and delicious too! They used to have a better Tuesday/Thursday taco deal (you only get money off the super basic ones) but they have really fun flavors like flaming hot Cheetos, ahi Tuna, tikka masala, and really fun vegetarian options. My one complaint is the salsa - they give you a bunch of chips but only like a tablespoon of each of their 3 salsas (none of which are too impressive.) Their rice & beans used to be my favorite but they're different the past few times I've gone since the first time I went a couple years ago - I'd take 'em or leave 'em. read more

I am an official fan of Airstream trailers, although I've apparently misplaced my fan club card. The Airstream bar just inside the door is a fun atmosphere and it's really one of the reasons I kept thinking about Vagabond. I thought the drink menu design was a clever touch, made to look like a record cover. It was $2 taco Tuesday when I visited, so a few of the tacos on their menu were available for $2. The spicy pork verde was a $2 Tuesday taco and it had some slow heat to it. I wouldn't be opposed to trying it again, but look forward to trying some others, such as the hanger steak or Orizaba brisket which both caught my eye. The Pescato with blackened Mahi was a full priced taco and it was just OK in my book. I had expected the pickled corn to be more of a wow, but on this night it was really just some cooked corn kernels to me. I won't keep this taco on my list to order again. I washed the tacos down with a glass of Cabernet for $7 (the Bodega Navarro Correas). I really enjoyed the wine. We were also given a basket of tortilla chips and three small ramekins of salsas: salsa rojo (sweet red), salsa verde (fresh green) and salsa picoso (spicy orange!). At first the verde was my favorite, but the rojo really started to grow on me. Desserts are available, and include flan and fried ice cream. The music seemed to span a wide variety of genres. Some songs reminded me of popular music from when I visited San Juan several years ago, others reminded me of the Go-Go's and some reminded me of club music. From my seat at the corner of the bar closest to the hostess stand, the music did make it a little difficult to hear our soft-spoken bartender at times, maybe due to speaker placement. She was hustling, and would disappear at times, and I finally realized that the back bar takes a Z turn around the corner to where there is another Airstream trailer bar. She was busy serving customers at both bars, but she was friendly and checked up on us several times, so all was good. I'll be back to try some more of the taco selections, and I'm also interested in trying the posole. read more

To quote a line from one of my favorite movies, "Fish tacos are the tits". It was Friday night, and I wanted something other than sushi for my fun meal. Don't get me wrong, I love me some sushi like a millennial loves reminiscing about the 90s, but once in a while I gotta "spice it up" (that pun will make sense later). So, I headed over to Vagabond off of Water St. Vagabond is a cool kids restaurant. It's got vinyl covers on the back of the drink menus, giant speakers up against a wall, a steel trailer opened up as the main bar, and graffiti style paint all over the walls. Overall, the atmosphere was very chill. After ordering a half pitcher of the watermelon margarita (which tasted like a jolly rancher doing the can-can on my tongue), I ordered two of their seafood tacos - the Pescato, which was grilled mahi mahi, and the Mahi Rojo, which was battered mahi mahi. If you can't handle spice, the Mahi Rojo will be HOT. I kept eating it because the bettered fish tasted so good, but it was a bit of a painful experience. The Pescato wasn't as hot, which made it easier to eat, but I preferred the taste of the battered fish to the grilled. If you like spicy though, the Mahi Rojo is the way to go for seafood tacos. I will definitely go back to try the other tacos, or at the very least, get me some more margarita goodness. read more

I took the family for dinner this Saturday night. The restaurant was busy but not overwhelmed. Service was excellent. The complimentary chips and salsa were fine, but the waiter would have saved himself a lot of trips back and forth if he had filled the basket well and brought a more generous amount of salsa. Most of us had the tacos which were tasty but not extraordinary. And they were extremely small and not well-filled. On a $2 taco Tuesday this would be reasonable but on a regular $5 night, the dinner portion needed (at least 3 tacos) adds up quickly. I put 3 stars considering the 3 main things: food, place, service. Food: one star : I'm Mexican and the food - as much as they made an effort- is far from being a true street Mexican food. They use some Mexican ingredients but the combination on the flavors and mix with American ingredients is not what I will call Mexican. Place: 5 stars!! I love how they customize to resemble a taco street car! Combine this with party rock music and some cervezas and you can't fail on having a great night out with friends! Service: 3 stars. You can tell that they were understaff and It took about 15min to get our order up and running, still the waiter came through at the end and make up by being more attentive towards the end of the night. Overall I would recommend this place if you just want to have a fun night out but definitely if you are looking for true Mexican food there's plenty of places in Milwaukee where you can enjoy that. read more

This is one of my favorite taco places in Mke! The inside has such a cool atmosphere including a Dj booth that plays music later on in the evenings. Their patio is super cute when it's nice out. Make sure to check this place out for taco tuesdays! read more

We came to Vagabond extremely excited to try it seeing as we heard great things about it from people. The menu looked pretty exciting with a large variety of fusion taco options. After tasting the chips salsa, we should've taken the indication from how those tasted packed up and left. The salsa tasted store bought jar salsa at best. The chips were warm and crisp, which was a plus, but how can you call yourself a good taco place with below average salsa? Finally we received the tacos. Overall they were cold, bland and overly sweet. The short rib taco specifically was so dry i had to smother it in sour cream to make it palatable. Seeing as we tried six different types, it's safe to say that we got a good impression of what the restaurant has to offer. It's safe to say we will NEVER be back there again. read more
