They can't grip a board, and when I asked another employee to check if my board was finished, the guy replied with a disrespectful attitude to his own co worker. A one stop shop for snow, ski, and skate goods and the apparel that goes with them. Val Surf has everything you could need and more. The staff rocks too. I bought $350 dollars O'Neill wetsuit at Val Surf in North Hollywood. After I used it for the first time I realized that the left arm was ripping, had lint balls and it was making a weird noise as it would rip even more, So on Saturday, 06/27 around 12pm, two weeks after I bought it. I came back to Val Surf in North Hollywood to see if they could repair or exchange it. The salesman also identified as a manager that sold me a wetsuit with manufacturing issue was very rude saying that he couldn't do nothing to help me. What surprises me since I've been wearing O'Neill's wetsuit for years and they are very attentive repairing or replacinig suits. Instead of the manager offers to send my wetsuit to O'Neill so they could repair it. He got a scissors and started to cut the lint balls and said that I didn't understand anything about wetsuit and surfing. So I asked if I could send it to O'Neill so they could repair it for me, he was very impolite saying that if I try to contact O'Neill, they would laugh at me. He also complemented saying that the lint balls was caused by the way I carried the surfboard. What doesn't make any sense. So I left and called Val Surf in Calabasas, in which they said that when something like this happens, they would send my wetsuit to O'Neill. What it is the right thing to do, since it's under warranty. Honestly I was a regular costumer of North Hollywood Val Surf. But unfortunately I will never come back. I rather drive to Calabasas or go to any other store that I can find a professional salesman that will know how to deal with a client and not make me loose my time. read more

Val Surf is hands down one of the best places to rent gear from in LA. I went on a three day ski trip to Mammoth and was able to rent gear from them for $55 (skis, poles, and boots). The rental was super easy and straight forward, and the guys helping me out showed me how to put everything on and explained how the gear should feel (note: I have not skied since the 4th grade.) Will definitely come back here to rent gear! The store itself has excellent brands and everyone was really friendly, not sure what more you could ask for! read more

You know that saying, "give a man a fish to feed him for a day, but teach a man to fish to feed him for a lifetime"? Yeah, they definitely taught me to fish at Val Surf! I went in to drop my surfboard off for repairs, and one of the guys spent some time teaching me how to repair the board myself. He repeated the important parts of the process so many times that I don't think I'll ever forget!! Of course, I absolutely appreciate him saving me $100-200; but most of all, I appreciate the fact that he took the time and had the patience to help me out to such a great degree. Especially since he didn't have to. All the guys were knowledgeable, experienced in board sports, professional, courteous, and really chill people. I interacted with maybe 4-6 employees who were all super friendly people. The customers were pretty smiley too. All in all, I couldn't be happier with my local surf shop. I'm glad they're just down the street from my house in SFV, so I don't have to drive all the way to the beach for every little thing. For the things that I need, their prices are VERY good. I called ahead to make sure they had what I needed in stock-a white women's Thermal Silk top. The girl on the phone assured me they carried them, but had limited stock. She even offered to have someone check, but I was nearby so I just headed on over. When I got to the store, the item appeared to be sold out. But 2 of the salesmen were convinced they had some, somewhere, and turned the store upside down trying to find it for me. I mean, they WOULD NOT give up! Finally, one of the gentlemen found the item by absolutely scouring the stock room. Voila! I had what I came for! Very attentive customer service. I went here to look around for something cozy to study in. They have the most amazing sweats for women. The Roxy and Alternative Apparel burnout wear are to die for. I never want to wear anything else ever again! I wish they had more long/full length sweat pant suits that are not gathered at the ankle though. I like the buying for the women's area. A very understated, laid back SoCal vibe that is perfect for lounge wear. The prices are comparable to brass plum at Nordstrom, however the 14 day return policy seems a bit strict for me so I would not buy anything you are not 100% sure you are going to keep. Very good selection of Uggs Toms and swim suits and board shorts. The accessories are all fabrics and fake leathers and the watches are all unisex so they didn't seem to have any women specific watches. Really pretty dresses cover ups and tees. read more

Great place for ski tuning! Quality job. Kind, friendly and honest. I didn't know what to expect. I was afraid the store concentrated exclusively on snowboarding and would not know how to handle my skis. I am glad I gave Val Surf a chance because they gave me a most excellent tune! The tuner even contacted me to verify some information. Very professional and very skilled at his craft. I ski a lot and get my skis tuned and waxed regularly and kudos to Val Surf... I just retuned from 2-weeks in Colorado and my skis performed better than when they were brand-new last year! I'll be back again soon before heading to Mammoth in a few weeks. read more

Val Surf, what would I do without you? Snow gear, it's hard to find in the valley. Big 5 has crap, Sport Chalet I noticed is getting better stuff but they still don't have the whole shabang. I can always count on Val Surf to have whatever snow related thing I'm looking for. Went in to pick up some wax and was asked if I needed help by two people. Browsed around and saw some new bindings that came out called Switchback. Bunch of pros are riding it, Ryan Paul and Halldor Helgason to name a couple. A binding is a binding, one would think it looks pretty cool, lets just get it. Well let me tell you, i'm glad I saw it in person cause they're crap. Most important thing about a binding to me is the ratchet. At the end of the run, I want to be able to pop off the strap with ease, not struggle with it. It was then I realized, i'm sooo glad I have an actual shop near me where I can see/test things for myself. Sadly the online stores are killing local skate shops left and right. We need to keep them alive. Especially for boot fittings, how else are you supposed to find that perfect boot. Its something you cant simply guess. Are they "expensive"? Yes, its retail price. But blame this on the manufactures. Any shop that's an authorized dealer of snowboard gear contractually can't sell their products for less than retail. Well at least until toward the end of the season. I guarantee Val Surf's prices are the same prices you see online for the new stuff. Might as well see and feel what you're buying all the while supporting a local shop because really, we NEED them. Oh and yea, where else can you get your board fixed. I'm all about diy but there's more to a board repair than lighting a ptex candle. This is the only place I know of that does base grinds (sand down the whole base to give it a smooth surface). Pretty reasonable too, $20-30 the last time I got one done. The long haired guy behind the counter is a seasoned vet and knows what he's doing. read more

I went here to buy a new surf board for my upcoming surfing trip with my friends. As soon as I bought the board, the counter top guy didn't really handle my board with care that had a few scratches on it after that happened but other than that the crew was nice and the shop was clean and tidy. I've been skateboarding since I was 5 years old. My family has been buying hardware, clothing, and accessories here for more than 30 years! I've lived in Newport Beach, west LA, Pasadena, now Hollywood. So when I say that this is the best skate shop in the history if the world, I know what I'm talking about. I love the Santa Clarita and Pasadena stores for large selection of hot dresses and skate pants. But my home base is and always will be the Valley Village store. I come here for hardware and last time I was there for new bearings the boys did a killer job of cleaning my trucks! I buy all my sexy weekend dresses and pjs here. I also love their selection of Reef sandals & Nixon watches. Prices here can't be beat due to the massive quantity of units they're moving. Mad props, dudes! read more

AMAZING STAFF, SELECTION AND SERVICE! I can't say enough about how wonderful my experience with Val Surf was last night. I left there feeling completely taken care of and honestly, in a good mood because of it! Every staff member was friendly, helpful and nice. We were assisted by "Grandma" for a ski rental fitting, and he was extremely knowledgeable and just a really great guy all around. Andrew checked us out, and again the customer service was above and beyond. The selection of men's, women's and kid's gear along with clothing was plentiful, and the prices are hard to beat for ski rentals! I am so happy we were referred to go to this place by a friend, as it's just making our upcoming ski trip that much more enjoyable! Horrible Return Policy! I have been shopping at Val Surf for over 25 years. I was extremely disappointed today when I tried to return a hat that my wife purchased for me less than 30 days ago. Their return policy was very disappointing! Apparently, you have 14 days to return something for a refund, otherwise you receive a store credit if you return it after two weeks but less than 30 days. Very disappointing! I am surprised that they stay business, especially when most of their inventory is overpriced compared to other places. Buyer's beware! read more

I recently came here to purchase a skateboard for my fiancé's birthday. Knowing little to nothing about skateboards I left most of the decision-making in the hands of the staff that worked the skate shop. They were very helpful and gave me several options made choosing between different styles very easy. They put the whole thing together in about 10 minutes no more than 20 minutes later from entering the store I was off at the perfect gift. He was very happy and so was I, thank you Val surf. DON'T BELIEVE WHAT THEY SAY OVER THE PHONE!!!!! In preparation for a weekend skiing , We called val surf to find out about rentals almost two weeks ago we specifically asked if we needed to reserve rentals. The woman on the phone said we did not. we asked if there was a chance they would run out of rentals and she said they would not WITH CONFIDENCE. Upon showing up at Whitsett val surf we were scoffed at for not having a reservation. The manager told me he would check but was not hopeful they would have all the sizes we needed. this was the first true thing we have heard from a Valsurf employee. the manager insisted his employees would never say that they would never run out. had the female employee on the phone told us we would be better coming in early to insure our rentals , we would have happily done so, this is the EXACT REASON WHY WE CALLED NEARLY TWO WEEKS AGO!! to the Valsurf management, please do a better job training your employees what to say over the phone. To the Manager "B,****", thanks for the excellent customer service by making us feel like we did something wrong (even though we asked the right questions) thanks for scoffing at my family , (in essence calling us liars,) when we did not get rentals we were lead to believe where available by your employee. read more

I showed up today wanting to rent skis for me and my son for a ski trip on Monday. I called in advance and asked if I could come in on Saturday to rent skis and they said no problem. At no point did they say they might be low in inventory. When my son and I showed up, I was told they might not have skis and I said okay, just let me know. We waited for a while and then they said they should have what we need. We went through the whole process of getting sized, trying on boots, waiting around some more and then the sales rep gave me skis that were clearly marked for someone else. I didn't want to take someone else's skis so I brought it to his attention, and then after some more waiting around, I was told they don't have skis for me. What an incredibly disorganized place. Their "system" is archaic and their staff needs much better and professional training. I was excited to find a local place where I could avoid the long lines at the mountains, but ended up waiting just as long and left with no equipment and barely an apology. You guys need to do better. read more

Very expensive and terrible customer service. The customer is always wrong here. Val Surf sold me a damaged item and would not accept it for return. The damage was very minor and I didn't see it until I looked at the item more closely at home. I did not use the item even once. I came back to the store within the 14 day return period with a receipt and with all original tags still attached. I explained to the cashier and store manager that it was damaged when I purchased it, but they refused to believe me and would not issue a refund, store credit, or an exchange. The store manager was very disrespectful and twisted my words to make it seem like I damaged the item. Very manipulative and shady. Other shops have better products, prices, and customer service. You can do better than Val Surf. read more
