It's the @Light_skin_dragon walking to you with a review because my bicycle got a flat tired. I looked on yelp to see where was the closes bike repair shop which was 3 miles away. So I walked my bike to van nuys and gor there there was only one person working. He saw me get there and he picked up the phone. And was talking a cool 8 mins and I'm like wtf in my head. I came just to get 2 new inner tubes. After he got off the phone he then quoted me which I was like damn was kinda pricey. 60 for both. He fixed it by the close of shop which was 5. He broke my chain guard. While he try to tell me that it was already broken. I told him no I walked here and I would know if it was broken. I brought an electric bike so I wish he knew if he worked with them first. But he said to come back next week and he will replace the chain guard. I came back and I called him the day before and he said to come. So I came the next day and I had to wait 30 mins and them he didn't have the part and he took the part of another bike that wasn't the same brand. I will never come back to this place. Bad customer service and there is no integrity here. The Light_skin_dragon will find a better bike shop that gives you way better service read more

I had two bad experiences here, first, I had Nestor replace my tire and he screwed something on too tight, as soon as I rode my bike the wheel got locked! If safety is your number one priority, as it should be, avoid coming here! Go to a professional bicycle shop instead. Secondly, he refused to open the door for me during business hours when the shop was empty! Felt like he discriminated me because I'm a black woman. The business owner, Nestor is so nice, its scary. I got a referral to this store, from a relative who got their bike fixed and pumped, no money necessary. Everyone in LA knows Van Nuys Boulevard *can be* a gritty area. However, Nestor locks the door once you enter, making everything secure. They allow 1 customer at a time into the store. You do not get that individual attention unless you're shopping at luxury shops on Rodeo Drive. I had a very simple fix - fixing the wheel and pumping air into them. Seeing all the great reviews on Yelp, I called this shop to find out how much they charge to clean and re-grease my road bike's chain. I was quoted a reasonable price. Two weeks later, I loaded up my bike and headed over the hill into the bowels of Van Nuys - not the nicest of areas, but I figured the price was worth the trek. I parked right in front of the entrance and one of the clerks from the store named Thomas took my bike. Seeing the type of road bike I had, my car and the color of my skin, he immediately tried to up-sell me. I told him I really only needed the chain and sprockets to be cleaned and re-oiled. He gave me a price over 2 times what was quoted. I thought maybe he misunderstood the service I needed, so I restated that I was only there for a simple cleaning and re-lubing of the chain -- and gave him the price I was quoted by phone not 2 weeks prior - but he insisted. Well, I almost left the bike there and paid the higher price (which admittedly wasn't exorbitant compared to prices on the Westside), but then thought I'm not going to be scammed - at any price -- and left on principle. A shame because I had 3 more bikes that needed more extensive work than my road bike and would have liked to establish a relationship with a shop that did good work, yet didn't charge an arm-and-leg. But if I can't trust them to quote consistent prices, I can't trust them with my bikes. This was the first time I experienced what some would some would call reverse discrimination. While I do understand it's tough for businesses during the pandemic, this was clearly a 'bait-and-switch' tactic that is not only abhorrent, but I'm pretty sure also illegal. Be careful. read more

I love this place and have to give it a full five star review. As a former customer of the fancier ZIP Code bike shops, I can say that retro xpress offers the exact same services, expertise and products as they do. The only difference is that the services are done immediately while you wait( my flat tire repair was done in 15 minutes) and in addition, the services are a fraction of the price of the other competitor bike shops. They have all sorts of bicycles for sale at competitive prices and all of the necessary accessories one would want. The last time I went to one of the competing High rent bike shops I received such an attitude from the technician while he told me it was going to take a couple of days to do the work. Every time I have come here I was greeted with a humble smile and the assurance that the work would be done immediately. Who could ask for more? While this bike shop might not be the most conveniently located for some it is well worth the drive. You will not be disappointed. read more

What a neighborhood gem! I see what all the great reviews are about. I stopped into the unassuming mom-and-pop shop to buy a bike lock chain and a cup holder. Melvin not only installed the cup holder for me but he even took time to adjust some things on my bike when I told him that I can't shift gears without my chain falling off. I thought it was because my bike was a cheapish tricycle and it was starting to warp from so much street biking. Melvin told me that my bike was actually a decent bike but that the gear was not original to my bike (shame on the folks who sold it to us in the OC!) and said he could replace it for me for a price that was way lower than what I expected. He rang me up for my purchases and didn't charge me for the adjusting he'd done to my bike, so I gave him a little tip! Feels great to have such a great bike shop in the hood! read more

I came in looking to change my inner tubes for my bike. I was very disappointed that I was about to pay almost $50 to get it fixed. I from LA and I know many shops that charge only $4 to $5 dollars per Tube with only a $10 service charge. These are the types of places which try to rob you out of your money. I personally think that's not ok. I had an original Robinson SST that I wanted to get cleaned up. Bike sat for years outside and had rust and years of decades of use. After talking to a bunch of shops around LA Retro seemed to be the only ones to gain my trust. I took the bike to them and my god it looks GREAT!! You should of seen the rust on it. They could of re dipped it and added the original sticker kid I found but we decided to keep it original and clean and I'm so glad we did!! I took a KHS Mountain bike to them a few months latter and I'm not joking when I say it looked brand new. My kid still keeps telling my wife I bought a new bike...... I also bought a 4 bike rack tow hitch from them for a better price then I could find in the past 8 months of looking. Even on Craigslist. It was a really hot Saturday but I biked over to this location anyway because I needed to get my mountain bike fixed. The front tire was misaligned and kept hitting the brake and for some reason, my bike wouldn't shift into third gear. The chain kept stopping on the second gear track and it was really annoying. Guess that's what happens when you get your bike purchased and assembled over at wal-mart. never again. gg. Anyway, Nestor was working and he happily took my bike and said to come back in an hour and he'd have it ready for me. Came back an hour later and my bike was ready! He actually said if I came back 30 mins earlier that my bike was already done. oops. Guess I should've left my number. My bike was brought back to life! Glad I brought it over here to get fixed. Will probably bring it in for a full tune-up some other weekend. Oh, by the way, they're no longer located at the old newsstand looking area. They moved across the street into an actual storefront. It's not a huge space, but the way they have the store organized enables them to utilize the space pretty well. This is it, the friendly, neighborhood bike shop. The store is literally outdoors and in the street. The storefront used to be a newsstand, so cyclists, skaters and pedestrians can just roll or walk right up. The people that work here are friendly and approachable. They don't give you the "too cool for school" vibe like some of the folks you find in bike shops around town. I've had two of my bikes tuned up there. The two owners Melvin & Nestor had my bikes back in tip-top shape at an affordable price. You can pay by credit card on their iPad and they e-mail you a receipt. I was planning to get two bikes serviced and tuned up for use. I rang and spoke to Nestor expecting to take my bikes to the Victory/Van Nuys Blvd location as I have before. He mentioned this new location in Panorama City which was probably even closer to me. I took them down within the hour expecting to leave them there but Nestor had a quick look and said he could look at them almost immediately. Parking is in the rear although I found parking out the front of the store. He charged me a very good and fair price. He gave an honest evaluation and told me that one of the bikes required little work compared to the other. I highly recommend anyone to purchase or take their bikes here for repair. read more
