Yay! A long long time ago I tried Blumes Coffee Crunch cake when I went to DTLAs grand central Market. It was the best slice of cake I had ever tasted with the different textures- crunchy coffee honeycomb and airy cake which isn't mega sweet...And then they were gone! Didn't know about the other locations and kind of just filed it away in a corner of my brain. THEN I randomly drove past this location and all the memories came rushing back. SCORE!! This was a place where I literally wanted to sample everything they had in their display cases. Valerie certainly makes great confections. It's a cute little shop with an adjacent building where they serve afternoon tea. That's an experience I'll have to come back for on another day. Love afternoon tea services! We came for a few slices of their famous Coffee Crunch Cake (and a few other treats) but I was seriously considering buying the whole cake. It was delectable and a huge party hit. Also got a couple of the Mochi Shoyu Caramel Cake and Passionfruit Pie. Each dessert was really unique and stood out on their own. On a Saturday morning in early December, my family and I drove to Glendale to get free sample of cookies and hot chocolate. Inside has display of boxes of chocolates for gift ideas. They also sell individual pieces petit fours, pie slices, Cupcakes, coffee. The staff are nice and helped select items into the bag. Small, charming bakery/confectionary located in Glendale right at the Burbank border. I've only been once as of 3/24, but it seems like they do a lot of unique cakes or at least cakes I don't see often at other places. Their other offerings include coffee, tea, other baked goods, and of course, lots of fun confections. Oh, and they offer an afternoon tea service seated on the side of the building in an enclosed area. I came here looking for the Blum's Coffee Crunch Cake - I heard great things and wanted to pick some up for a friend's birthday. Lots of things looked really good, so ended up getting a couple slices of the coffee crunch cake, a slice of the passionfruit pie, and a couple of the mochi shoyu caramel cakes. The coffee crunch cake is as delicious as advertised - it was a spongey chiffon cake, not overly sweet, and had a great contrast in texture with the coffee honeycomb that adorned the outside on the whipped coffee frosting. Actually none of the items were overly sweet, which I appreciated. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the passionfruit pie - similar to a key lime pie. The moshi shoyu was nice and chewy, with a bit of Asian flavor profile. There was a group of folks finishing up the afternoon tea and they had to come in and pay, so it was a bit hectic at the time I was in there, but the line pretty standard in terms of bakeries or coffee shops. read more

This is a review for their afternoon tea service. The tl;dr version - well worth the drive from the Westside. You need to book reservations on Open Table since seating is limited. The tea is served outdoors on a fully covered patio that is open on two sides. They offer a set menu where the only choice you have is which tea you would like. The teas were perfectly brewed. My husband had the iced English breakfast, I had the genmai matcha, and our daughter had the jasmine tea. There were no leaves or bags left in the pot, so the tea did not become more bitter over time. The server stopped by fairly frequently to refill my husband's glass. The food was fairly informally plated - no towers to be seen - but it was delicious. The scones were brought out first, and they were pretty perfect - nice and crunchy on the outside and not too dry in the inside. The salted butter made a nice complement, but the lemon curd is always my favorite. I did miss having Devonshire or clotted cream as an accoutrement but not too much. Once we were done with the scones, they brought out the sandwiches, and they were all delicious. The deviled tea egg was probably my favorite since it didn't involve bread and was a bit unusual in that regard, but both the curried chicken and smoked salmon sandwiches were superb. We were thrilled that our daughter didn't fuss about the ingredients but simply offered me the avocado from her tartine and picked the celery out of her chicken sandwich. Finally, the desserts - once again, all delicious. I couldn't quite finish all of mine, but the quality was good and I did enjoy what I ate. They had so many delicious desserts in the case when we went in to pay the bill - I think we'll have to come back sometime just to check out some more options. With the low-key setting and personable service, this is a great place for afternoon tea and a wonderful option for kids. read more

I was looking for a coffee stop while in the area and saw this place on Yelp. I don't know how I have never noticed it before or even heard about it. I come to this area weekly for my job and never saw it. Anyways I'm glad I found it .... What a nice surprise. I walked in and was greeted right away. The display of the sweets left me in awe. They are perfectly made chocolates and tiny cakes. There was also variety of cakes such as apricot and few others. I wasn't planning to buy anything but the apricot cake looked to good so I bought a slice to enjoy with my iced coffee, the reason I walked in. The coffee was very delicious by the way. The employee gave me a sample of the salted truffle and a mini cake once he found out it's my first time here. Now that amazing customer service. He made sure I get to taste their products. Both tasted heavenly. Can't wait to come back and try other things. I have a feeling I'll be here very often. These chocolates make great gifts as well so I'll be buying them for sure. Valerie never lets us down! Went there for Pie Day today and their apple pie could not have been better. Perfectly cooked chunks of apple, not too sweet, and crunchy buttery crust. Best in L.A, no contest. We go there once a week now to try something new and it's always delicious. She understands balance and the cakes and pastries are great every time, always perfectly baked and never over-sweetened. I ordered the 'Les Hommes Truffles' which were on sale. It's an assortment of dark chocolate truffles, some full of chocolate topped with a little salt and some with a melty caramel interior. This review is for the afternoon tea only! Arrived and was able to find street parking just around the corner; be warned there is only street parking. For the tea, we checked in outside on the patio; we had to wait a bit because no one checked us off a list as they seemed to be busy scurrying in and out and all around. We were seated under the building and let me tell you, it was hot. No wind under there and we were right up against the wall; J had to move the table away from the wall cause she was hot and felt squished. Servers were nice, but all the tables seated after us were assisted before us so we were hot and hungry by the time they finally stopped by our table to take our tea order; they were doing iced teas because of the heat, but hot teas do not come in a pot with a cup and saucer (came in a mug). After delivering our teas, they finally took our order. Basically, you choose 2 petit four flavours, everything else is the same for everyone, so we were a bit annoyed it took them so long to get to us; 20 minutes have now passed since we arrived for our reservation. The scones were good, but we've had better. The sandwiches were hot or miss; cucumber very bland, egg salad good, heirloom tomato delicious. But, we did wish that they used different breast for the sandwiches as it seemed a bit of a cop out to use the same little buns for at $65 a person. The fruit was a nice a touch and the petit fours were good, but absolutely expected them to be good. Tea was refilled often, but there was always a bit of a wait for it to arrive after we ordered them. And, you pay inside, so a good opportunity to pickup a few extra items to take home. I recently saw a post from Valerie confections on Instagram, and I immediately checked out their website, and decided that I needed to give them a try. Today was the day! What I love about this location in Glendale, is that there is street parking available, that you don't have to fight for. I walked in, and I was the only customer at the moment. The young gal working was very sweet, and very helpful. We had good conversation, and she even allowed me to sample a truffle. The Earl Grey truffle is bomb.com. I went specifically for the blum's coffee crunch cake. I walked out with one slice of that cake, and Victoria sponge cake, and a little Earl Grey petit four. I had the petit four on the way to meet my friend for lunch, and then we shared the Victoria sponge cake. All was enjoyed. I'm saving the coffee crunch cake for later. But, it looks fabulous! Overall, a really good first experience at Valerie Confections. I will definitely be going back in the future. read more

I tried the Blum coffee crunch cake recently. It was indeed a very beautiful cake! The cake and whipped cream frosting were heavenly but there are a few things that are just not right at all. The honeycomb crunch part was overly sweet so just pick them off after photos are done. Also they stick a straw in the middle with some nasty dough/fondant to hold the cake layers together and/or to the cake box. I had an awful mouthful of whatever gummy dough was in there and it tasted quite bad...luckily the person I bought the cake for was not subjected to this unpleasant experience on his birthday. It would have seriously ruined everything. I took one for the team unknowingly. I guess it all worked out in the end as I was the sacrifice and not he. A warning from the shop would have been nice: eat the cake but not the very center! Sorry, I just assumed I could eat everything? You cannot order whole cakes in store. You must order them online. Excited to finally try the Blum's Coffee Crunch Cake and ended up getting the strawberry rhubarb pie since I've been looking for a good strawberry pie all summer! The cake was so light and airy with fluffy coffee whipped cream and the coffee crunch was like was a nice blend of airy and crisp pieces, a bit too sweet for me, but definitely a unique cake worth trying! The staff also convinced me to try some of the truffles on my way out, I got the rose petal which had passion fruit purée and was my favorite! Also tried the rice and sesame, which was like a caramel with sesame and the earl grey was a smooth darker chocolate. Yet another 5-star review for this spectacular gem of a bakery. This time ordered the Key Lime Pie for a friend's birthday and did not disappoint. So creamy with the perfect crust. It was the star of our meal. Best part, the service. The gentleman we spoke with offered to deliver our pie to out neighbor's house because we were coming back from out of town on a Saturday night and unable to make their closing time. It's one thing to make irresistible desserts, but it's an entirely different ballgame when you have this kind of hospitality. Clearly, this speaks to the enormous success of this place. We went here for the first time today with a few friends for breakfast. We ordered 3 hand pies; Ham, cheese & scrambled eggs which they made to order for us since they were out. Absolutely delicious. As our delightful server Ella set down our to go coffees she said she would bring out or hand pies when they were ready. The last coffee slipped out of her hand and landed splat on the floor behind the counter, with impeccable comic timing she smiled sweetly and said, "I'll bring another coffee with your hand pies to the patio." Please give her a raise! We ordered some chocolates to go. The chocolate is rich and flavorful and doesn't rely on sugar to give it a punch. The Very Berry Truffle is out of this world, try it. I got this cake for my birthday and the texture of the cake just wasn't for me. I had tried a few pieces of the petit four before, and wasn't in love with the dense, dry cake, but the Fallen Fruit cake just looked so beautiful and I loved all the ingredients in the description, with vanilla bean and passionfruit that I thought I would love it regardless. Unfortunately this was not the case. The cake was still beautiful, but definitely not moist as mentioned. It was incredibly dense and took us a while to finish it. The passionfruit flavor was pretty good and not too sour. Overall, I'm glad to have tried it, but probably should not have jumped into the deep end getting such a large (9", feeds 8-12) and expensive ($80) cake. read more

The BEST chocolates in town. I just had yet another great experience at Valerie Confections. If you haven't tried these insanely good chocolates, do yourself a favor and head over to this sweet spot. It's such a cute space, always clean and stocked with magical chocolates and pastries. My standard is the Fleur de sel or almond toffee, but today I ventured into truffle land. My MIL can be a tough cookie to buy for, and the liquid caramel chocolate hearts are the perfect honey-for-the-bear. The lovely staff member helped me put a box together with the hearts and some other gems, let me choose a ribbon, and tied it up beautifully. I also grabbed a preset box of truffles for a gift for a guy I don't know very well... because it's perfect for everyone! If I hadn't just eaten lunch I would have grabbed a slice of the gorgeous quiche they were serving. I love that that had vegetarian options with all of their pastry items. Next time! read more

Overall Valerie Chocolates & Petits Fours are amazing! My favorite is Chili with Chocolate, but all of the flavors are outstanding. Valerie's Petits Fours are unlike any Petits Fours I have ever had. They consist of Moist, Rich Cake with Filling which are then Dipped in Chocolate. The Chocolate, Rose, Lavender & Champagne versions are my go-to whenever I need a good cake fix. Oh, Valerie Confections. I really wanted to like you! After all, we share the same name! But I have to admit, I was rather disappointed by my recent visit to this location. First off, it's important to note that Valerie has changed this shop from a cafe where you can buy coffee and pastries to more of a boutique storefront that only offers pickups of preordered items and a glass case of chocolate bars for sale. I was super bummed when I walked in and discovered that I wouldn't be able to purchase any of the adorable petit fours that used to be sold here in the past. But I didn't want to leave empty handed, and the salesgirl working the counter was very nice (hence 3 stars), so I wound up buying a chocolate bar. Unfortunately, I didn't realize until I was checking out that said chocolate bar retailed for TEN FREAKING DOLLARS! Are you kidding me? I know Valerie is in independent business and all, but $10 for a candy bar is crazy. Also, for the price the candy bar was extremely mediocre. I ate about half of it before deciding that I didn't like it enough to justify consuming the rest of the calories. It wasn't bad, per se, but unremarkable given the sky high price. I would still like to someday sample some of Valerie's baked goods, but in the meantime I don't think I'll be going back to this location anytime soon. read more

Have you seen the Friends episode " The One will All the Cheesecakes"? I feel like I was living that episode with the Basque Cheesecake from Valerie Confections. It is honestly one of the best cheesecakes I've ever had. It's so perfectly creamy but also light and not too sweet but sweet enough. This was also the first time I've had a Basque Cheesecake and I really enjoyed the burnt/caramelized exterior. The shop itself is really cute. Like other reviews have mentioned, at this location you can only pick up pre ordered cakes and they have their chocolates on sale. Everyone working there was really friendly and helpful. A delightful little gem hidden within the mist. Pristine cutely decorated petit fours along with the selection of chocolate truffles. My sister had found this place off of Yelp and we dropped by on a Saturday afternoon to check it out as we were in the area. Our favorite for the petit four was the Lemon. It was just a delightful treat to have in your mouth with the mixture of 4 layers and the ganache. My favorite toffee on the other hand was almond fleur de sel toffee. We had wonderful customer service in sampling the chocolate truffles and choosing them with recommendations. The cookies they had were DIVINE - and we had to buy another even after we had one. It is quite a small little shop, but filled with so many goodies. We stayed there for quite a bit, eating and trying our purchases and seeing what else there was. My brother-in-law also got a drip coffee which he said was really good from here. It was very surprising to see they have been around 2004 and the history of how Valerie Confections came to be. The petit fours is made of 4 layers in which a ganache is place between each one. Once they're stacked, put into the freezer, and then cut into even pieces and then covered with chocolate. There was a video on their website that showed a quick overview of how the rose petal petit four was made. It's amazing to see how someone could make something so petite and taste so good in their craft. Keep up the creativity! The price is a bit more expensive than I would want it to be - but I believe that the price it is, is worth it due to all the work is put into it. read more
