When I am traveling, my preference is always to stop at a gas station that offers something more than pumping and go. I prefer having a convenience store attached to the gas station in case I'm looking for something to drink, some gum or perhaps even a quick snack. Cleanliness is always a huge plus. This particular Valero's has a convenience store, and unhappy people that work there. We stopped to get gas, and walked inside to pay and grab a quick drink. The cashier was extremely unpleasant, and it was very clear not only was unhappy to be there, but he was clearly inconvenienced by us making a purchase. After we paid, we went out to pump the gas and the pump was not even ready for us to use. We had to walk back inside, and ask for him to turn the pump on. Literally standing there waiting for what felt like eternity, but was probably about two minutes or so until he decided to turn the pump on. No one else was there, so it should not of been an issue. The station itself is pretty basic, and snacks were at a minimum. The station was also fairly clean, as far as gas stations go. My issue at the station, was the attitude that the attendant had, and why it seems to go unnoticed. Clearly, he has worked there for a while and it doesn't seem to be an issue for management. As expensive as gasoline is, I certainly plan on going somewhere else, rather than spending my money in a place where it doesn't seem to be welcomed

In fact, my 240k-mile Subaru has been run almost exclusively on Costco gas thanks to the proximity of my work to a Costco Gas Station. Their gas is rated Top Tier™, and that isn't a meaningless proclamation, as TT means a higher quality of gas. They intentionally run it at 20-30¢/gal cheaper than the market average because they use it as a loss leader. * One of the few Costco gas locations that carries diesel. * 5% cash back on the Costco Citi card is kind of hot, especially considering our gas prices as of late. The Meh: * No amenities here like paper towels and window washing equipment. Hell, you're lucky they even have garbage cans! * Members Only. But I mean honestly, does anyone in The Bay *not* have a Costco membership??? The Ugly: * The Santa Cruz station is priced 50¢/gal higher than San José gas stations. I guess that's the schlepping the petrol down the hill tax. Conclusion: Inexpensive, high-quality gas. Not much more one can ask for.

They have most, if not all the departments - Tire, food court, gas station, pharmacy, optical, hearing aids, etc. I should have checked their gas prices... Service - Self service. Price - Reasonable, inexpensive. But I always end up buying stuff I do NOT need..... So for me it was a little wasteful. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success at this location since 1994. Congrats on all your success since 1976, since Price Club. Valero is typically $.05 to .10 cheaper than the rest of the stations in town, and that's good when you're living on a budget. There's almost never a line and you have the Corner Store right there if you need road trip food like beef jerky, sunflower seeds, Pringles, and iced tea. You can also pick up firewood, windshield washer fluid and other assorted sundries as well. However at night this place becomes a hobo boxing ring. Compared to most gas stations this close (and convenient) to the highway, Sav-On Gas is a steal. Ocean Street also has quite a few restaurants and fast-food places, so if you can turn your quick stop for gas into a full refueling stop if you so choose. My pump was a bit slow, but it wasn't terrible. The man working here when I came was efficient, but he didn't say much.

The cashier was very friendly and had my change waiting for me before I had even walked back inside. The gas pumps have seen better days and can use a power-washing. It's annoyingly complicated to get back onto Mission Street westbound. It's possible (and legal) to turn left onto Mission Street from the station, but cars are usually backed up at the Walnut Avenue light. It's also possible (and legal) to turn right onto Walnut Avenue from the station, but if the station is crowded, you might not be able to get back to that side of the pumps, depending on which side of your car you fueled up from. In short, there's not too much room to maneuver, and the neighborhood itself has really confusing streets. If you're planning it beforehand, you're probably better off coming to the station when you're headed east on Mission and want to continue heading east after you fill up. When I came, I was headed west and wanted to continue west.

However, a couple times in the…read morelast few weeks, I've purchased a $1 super lotto from a pre-filled slip, and a beverage, when a particular guy is working there. Brown short hair, clean shaven, kind of slim, maybe 5'10", in his 20s or 30s. Both times he said, with a totally straight face: $20 for the lotto (which was actually $1 if you recall), and then whatever the price of the drink was. And quickly doing the math in his head, he verbally added $19 dollars to the grand total without missing a beat. When I looked at the register seeing the real total (which of course was $19 less than what he said), he deadpanned "just kidding". He did this exact same thing to me two different times in the span of a couple weeks. Seems very sketchy. Benefit of the doubt: I suppose he really could've been "just kidding", but if so, not funny at all and pretty poor taste to be trying that joke on paying customers that you don't know. Especially if you have no comedic demeanor or delivery with it. Keep an eye on this guy.
