I have stopped here a million times for coffee, beer and other staples when in Waitsfield for ski…read moretrips at my ski club, whose lodge is local. But this past fall, our visit there took the cake! We arrived at the lodge and discovered that the entire supply of blankets had been sent to the cleaners. This is Vermont, people! Blankets are necessary! There weren't any stores nearby that were open, so we were thinking we'd make due with our jackets and hope for the best. We also thought some beer might help, so we stopped by the Village Grocery for supplies (they have a really good beer and wine selection, btw.) While mentioning our plight to one of the guys who works there, he was kind enough to call the owner. The owner actually went out of his way to drive miles away to his home and come back with blankets for us. I couldn't believe it. His over-the-top hospitality to out-of-towners blew me away. I still so grateful and will always remember this kind gesture. I learned that his father ran the store back in the day, so it is a family legacy, which is so cool in this day of corporate greed . More importantly, I also love this store!!! They have a great selection of groceries, including local Vermont maple syrup, a nice coffee selection, super cute deli (serving breakfast and lunch sandwiches etc. until 3pm, I think) and plenty of other good stuff too. If you're lucky and happen to be there on the right day, you can score some Heady Topper or Lawson's Finest Liquids, and the staff are always so genuine and friendly. Stop by if you're in town!

The VG has been a local treasure for the entire 47 years I've been in the Valley. And it gets…read morebetter with every passing year. It is WAY more than just a convenience store, although it is that, as well They have the best beer selection around--an entire walk in cooler with a broad selection of beers from all over. Wowser! Their deli has great food either cooked to order or serve-yourself hot dishes like chili and Mac and Cheese. After hours for the deli, you can still get a nice set of selections, including my favorite--their deviled eggs. And pretty soon, the serve-yourself creemee machines will be up and running for the season. Did I mention their specials? Including the annual lobster boil? Oh, and they were the first gas station in the Valley to offer ethanol-free gas. Plus, they give back a percentage of gas sales to a local charity each month. The VG is truly a gem! I'm so glad they are here and hope they will be--FOREVER!

It seems a little odd to write a review for a gas station. After all, aren't they all…read moreinterchangeable -- like McDonalds? Not in this case. As my 12 year old has noted, Vermont gas stations are a breed of their own. Many seem to carry local products, freshly made food, wine, craft beers and all sorts of other goodness. This Mobil is truly exceptional on this front, a great gift for travelers everywhere. Staff are unfailingly kind and hospitable. Let me repeat that: The STAFF ARE WONDERFUL, especially the beautiful, cheerful woman working on Christmas Eve!!! If there were some sort of award for loveliest employee ever, she would easily win. There's a huge variety of fermented, probiotic pickles; maple syrup + maple products; delectable deviled eggs; portable, locally-made jerky; wine; Lawson's and other locally brewed craft beer; candy and small toys; batteries; Advil and allergy medicine; windshield wiper fluid; and when it's not almost closing time on Christmas Eve, some frou frou, way-better-than-they-have-to-be-for-a-gas-station finds like pizza, chicken tenders, fried ravioli, prepared and made-to-order sandwiches, hot dogs and bratwurst, soups and stews, cookies and whoopie pies from a local bakery. On Christmas Eve, local grocery stores locked their doors by 5:45 p.m. for a 6 p.m. close, so we were unable to pick up some staples when we arrived at exactly 5:45 p.m. This Mobil came to the rescue and we stocked up on some basics (local craft brews, wine, eggnog, milk, delectable deviled eggs, locally-made cheddar + Babybel cheese... which go nicely in little pockets for skiing). These helped make our dinner a celebration rather than just another meal. So very, very grateful for this place.
