I have been going to Valerie Joseph every week since the end of Covid for hair cut, color, blow dry, manicure, pedicure and occasional wax. I love the work that Henry does with my hair, and I love Julies manicure. I also occasionally gift my friends daughters with hair cut, color, and nails. I think the regular receptionist Teresa is outstanding with respect to organization and friendly and laid back atmosphere in the salon. Normally, I would give the salon five stars. The reason why I am giving the salon one star is first, the inability of the salon to handle a simple situation when my manicurist didn't come in for my gel manicure and pedicure appointment (Teresa would have simply apologized and rescheduled me) and second, how the substitute receptionist Althea basically blamed me for exacerbating this snafu. Althea said as a favor to me, someone, not a manicurist, would be able to remove my gel manicure (I had given up on the pedicure because even though I said I was willing to reschedule, come back, or wait, apparently these things weren't possible) The woman who removed the manicure was very nice, but I had unfortunately forgotten that the nails look white and scratched when gel is removed. The problem arose bc I asked if there was something opaque to cover. After she applied opaque polish, Althea was visibly upset and verbally chastised me for asking for a manicure without checking with her first. I was so taken aback, because honestly, it unfortunately didn't occur to me that a coat of opaque polish was that big a deal. I also felt terrible that the woman who helped me also seemed to be getting into some trouble for taking the time to help me out. I apologized sincerely to Althea several times, which in my mind, should have been the end of it. And, I was getting a bit aggravated bc no one had apologized to me that the services I had booked weren't available. But she reluctant to take my repeated apologies, and she also didn't seem to want to take my request for my usual following weeks appointments. I left feeling like I had ruined her schedule and her day, and that my business wasn't wanted. This makes me very sad, bc I love the salon. My mother in law has terminal cancer, and sometimes spending time at Valery Joseph is the highlight of my week. I would highly recommend this salon so long as the schedule is running smoothly and the regular receptionist Teresa is at the helm. The professionals are among the most talented in NY and very nice. I'm honestly not sure what I will do now for salon services, but I'm debating cancelling my appts if Teresa isn't there. The issue is i purchased a series of services. read more

8 months after my initial review and they still haven't trained the assisting staff on how to wash hair without pulling the hair, or how to wash color from hair completely so it doesn't transfer to your blouse and ruin it forever. Clearly management is an issue...they are not providing sufficient training. Maybe they don't know how to wash hair either! read more

One-star because I got a great walk-in haircut a few weeks ago. Left a $40 dollar tip hoping that next visit would be as good. This time I booked an appointment, arrived early and found Roberto busy with another customer. 30 minutes later I left without a haircut - and his customer still getting his hair cut. WTF - no apology, no acknowledgment of the situation, just "sit here and wait". This place isn't cheap. Hope today's customer tipped well Roberto. Hats off to the other workers who did their best to distract me from his insulting behavior. read more

Honestly one of the worst salon experiences I've ever had- this place is a scam. I scheduled a 9am appointment on a weekend because I had an event scheduled for later in the day, only to show up at 8:55 to see the salon mostly empty (one employee) and for my stylist to show up late. The minimal staff that was there when I showed up seemed uncomfortable that I was a whole five minutes early (god forbid) and was completely inattentive. From there my actual hair cut was mediocre, but I felt like I was being asked to direct every detail of my own haircut. I'm not the hairstylist, and i'm very open with my preferences. It's his/her job to know what looks good. The stylist had no enthusiasm and didn't seem particularly invested in making sure I had a good haircut or blow out. I wasn't offered water or coffee and the overall experience was below-average at best. The appearance of the salon was disappointing, with worn-down chairs and filthy upholstery. While the one-star review might seem harsh, the cost of a haircut here was well-over $300, and came closer to $400 including tip. Probably would have gotten a better cut at the local barber for $35 and maybe they would have at least offered me a cup of water. read more

I had a TERRIBLE experience with Valery Joseph Salon. I had an advance reservation for hair styling for my court wedding in the morning. When I arrived, Rose, the stylist whom I made the reservation with, was busy with another client. She told me to find another stylist to help me. (I had assumed Rose would have made an effort to accommodate our appointment because I made a reservation in advance, and I emphasized that it was for my wedding. I found her behavior awfully unprofessional). Amir approached me and asked me what I wanted to get done. And I responded "I am getting married today at 4pm. I would like to get my hair styled like this picture. [pointed to a photo from my phone]." It was raining that day, so I emphasized that I wanted something that could last all that humidity in the air at least until the evening. I had brought a hair piece with me that I wanted to be incorporated with my hair style. Amir said "This is something that a 16-year-old would wear. If you wear this, you will look like a child. If you want to look like an adult, wear a purple flower in your hair." I was mortified by his words but did not say anything to be kind. He continued on to style my hair. One hour I left the salon, my loose curls fell and my hair became very frizzy. I had to get my hair restyled in the afternoon. So, I paid $100+ for this awful service. I have never felt so unappreciated as a customer. I have found Rose unprofessional and Amir extremely rude. I will not be revisiting or recommending this salon to anyone. If you want to have a pleasant experience, save your money and go somewhere else. read more

Irena, the waxing specialist at the 25 CPW location is the absolute best! She is warm, friendly and inviting. She is a waxing Goddess, the only one I will ever let do my Brazilian. Irena is fast and its painless. I highly recommend her. read more

I don't usually write reviews, but in this case I have to because my experience was amazing!! Very sadly, the last person I went to for waxing moved away. But! Luckily! My friend recommended that I give Irina a try. Let me tell you, she is freaking incredible. I have never had a wax completed so quickly. On top of that, she was so professional! I arrived a bit early and the person at the front desk had me sit to wait for a few minutes. When Irina came to greet me, she offered me coffee, tea and water, and she was so friendly. I immediately felt welcome and comfortable in her presence. She was so professional and kind the entire time. I can't recommended Irina highly enough, I have found my new person!! read more

The salon is fantastic! Nicole did my color and balayage. It is the best color I have had in years, and I am now getting more grey hairs than ever before. I am seriously stoked about the color!! Steven cut my hair. He is a phenomenal stylist who understand hair texture and best cuts for the shape of your face! Steven takes his time and makes you feel valued! He cuts my hair having me stand, sit and stand again. Steven is a perfectionist and an artist! He is also kind, caring and very chill. Oh! I also loved the head massage I got when the color was being washed. Yes, coming here is expensive, but the cut and color last, so for me it's worth it! read more

I had the most amazing experience at this salon. Amir Shamli did a Cezanne straightening treatment on my nearly impossible hair. Since I had not been to this salon I trusted my instinct. I live in the neighborhood and I was completely fed up with my hair. The second I met Amir I knew I was in great hands. He took his time and explained that my hair required extra time because it was thick and did not want to miss a strand. The result is AMAZING and I highly recommend Amir and the salon .I washed my hair after the required time to allow it to "cure' and I have salon ready hair from a home blow dry. Finding the right hair colorist in New York City is a nearly impossible task. That's why I'm so thankful to have found Rose Jonsson. When it comes to hair color I'm a perfectionist. And Rose turns my hair the most beautiful shade of light buttercup blonde imaginable. Not only is she consistent but always lovely to deal with. It's truly a pleasure seeing her once a month. This is the worst Salon EVER!!! I went in for a 1 inch trim and got 4 inches cut off. I now have lopsided hair that looks like it was cut with a lawn mower - it is uneven on left right and the back - completely thinned to create an edgy look - HA! I came out hysterical - completely dissatisfied - and they did nothing to try to rectify the situation! I do not recommend this place AT ALL! Hold onto your hair if you decide to take the risk! The worst part of the entire experience is that they did not even have the decency to say they were sorry! A simple I'm Sorry goes a long way! I have never walked out of a salon looking worse than I walked in until I stepped into this salon. The absolutely worst haircut I ever got - hands down! Think Twice! As a follow up to this review- I have been to two others salons to try to fix the mess they made - neither one would touch my hair - said it was too botched! The good news is I can save $1000 by not having a haircut for 6 months waiting for the severely botched haircut to grow out! read more

Thanks goodness! An A++++ salon has FINALLY hit the Upper Westside. I've been going to Valery Joseph's Eastside location for nearly 9 years --even though I live on the UWS -- because every time I leave the salon with a cut, color or blow dry, I get at least 2 to 3 compliments and people asking me where I get my hair done. Valery himself is at the UWS location on Wednesdays so grab him if you can. He has a very unique cutting style that just makes you look like a million bucks every time. If you come in for color, ask for Gigi David. Not only is she a masterful colorist, but she tailored her approach for my very sensitive scalp with phenomenal results...something no one else could do. And the great thing is they have several locations -- Barney's, UES and a pop-up salon in Bridgehampton during the summer -- with the same great artistry and impeccable service at each one thanks to the co-owner, Revi, who runs a class act. The icing on the cake? This new UWS salon is set against a gorgeous Central Park backdrop. I know it sounds like they asked me to say all this, but they didn't.
