Been awhile since I've been to a Vallarta. Miss all the fresh Mexican prepared items. Also it was nice to see a large selection of pan Dulce's, Empanada's, muffin's, and all the other sweet baked goods. Trying the prepared masa fina para Tortillas to try making my own tortillas. Service however, is as average as any other grocery store. Even at the deli and butcher area, no one acknowledged me. Maybe because they assume I don't speak Spanish, but usually most of the workers speak English enough to be able to communicate. They did have the plantain chips that we were looking for, but like most items, it was affected by inflation and it was $3.00 more than what we used to buy it for. I'm not sure why I keep coming back! On several occasions Vallarta has sold me rotten chicken. I once asked the butcher to smell it. This last time I ordered from Instacart (6/1/25) and the smell that took over my kitchen was so overwhelming and immediate! I do not understand how no one notices there. I can almost bet that Vallarta marinates that rotten chicken to mask the smell. Also, the flaked ribs are cut weird. There was a bunch of tiny bone fragments that we needed to be careful while eating. Half of them were also pure fat! Im not a butcher but I buy these at Northgate and I've never had this problem. The pozole doesn't come with hominy. Has anybody heard of pozole that doesn't come with hominy, no. I got a medium pozole just for myself and 70% was massive chunks of fatty meat, the rest was broth. No hominy anywhere. Northgate has better pozole, for a fraction of the price. read more

Today I am writing a mixed review for Vallartas Market in Downey and as usual it looked clean and very welcoming First I want to congratulate Yolanda in La Cocina for her excellent customer service and for going above and beyond. We arrived to the store looking for dirty Horchata (which by the way is delicious) we ask about and were told that they had it. We got on line There were no other customers and we stood on line for at least 5 Min there were two ladies working la cocina but even thought they saw us did not offer to help. Yolanda arrive washed her hand and ask us how she could help us we asked for the dirty horchata and told her that we did no see, she said "no we have to prepare it for you what size do you need?" I explained to her that this is today was the fourth time that I went in looking for the dirty horchata and was told it was not available, she said it is always available we just have to mix with the cafe de olla. I explained to her but the ladies told me on Monday Wednesday and Thursday that they did not have it!! She apologized and said next time ask them to mix it for you!!! Getting Yolanda's help made my day and I hope management reads this review and recognize what a good team member Yolanda is she makes a big difference. The second part of my review is to mention the other team members that to avoid having to mix the drink told that it was not available three times in three different days. Shame on them. The good thing about them is they do custom cuts. So if you want a ticket cut or thin or filet they will do it. The place has a bit of everything with tasty hot food section as well as a fresh sushi section . They make their sushi a couple of times a day it's decent . The hot food section you will find carnitas , burritos tacos , Mexican stews and fried meats . Even an aguas Frescas section . Went to Vallarta today for fruit and passed by the bakery where they had a "New Item", a tres leche with mocha whipped cream and chocolate shavings. I placed it in the fridge and when I went to eat it that evening, I came to find out it was spoiled. The taste was had to get rid of. Multiple times of going, the produce is rotted. Tomatillos with black mold on the top with squished tomatillos next to it. Strawberries are legit being opened and eaten and put back! It's a horror show when even the nicest looking strawberry box has molded strawberries every time! The consistently bad quality produce is outstandingly hilarious. Blueberries that taste like waterballs, moldy raspberries, the only saving grace is they brought in good quality milk and have a solid meat counter. This place is not good quality but cheap crappy ingredients besides Latino ingredients which is the niche they serve. They need to cut ties to whatever company is supplying their fruit and start expanding into good quality products instead of the million Goya products they have. One good quality honey. Spouts will put the squeeze on this place unless they look to improve. Service and ambiance are typical for a grocery store. It's just bad groceries with no real good options. The cheese here is like picking between the bottom shelf of a food pantry and the lowest quality cheeses at your local Ralph's. Is there a no star review? This is my third time visiting Vallarta. They are my local "Latino market" (referring to their selection). However, it is a shame that their fruits are always rotten from the inside. It is my second time purchasing mangos and they were all black from the inside. OMG big mistake; both the chicken and the carnitas were super dry and bland, the chicken was so small that it could easily fit in my hand, the fried beans tasted funny, like they were starting to go bad. Staff was very nice and pointed out that I didn't get a dozen tamales since I'm too distracted to count properly while grabbing tamales apparently.
