Very good food, nice place, but service is poor to fair and that was before the busy rush.

We had not been to the Valley for a while and decided to try it again since we do like their fish & baked beans. No more buffet but that was OK the food was good. But to our disappointment the sound level was still horrid, it made dining unpleasant. A long time ago I put a free app on my phone called NIOSH SLM it reads sound levels - it lets you know if you are in a "danger" area. High 70's to 90's are very bad, if not extremely stressful on your ears. Staff who work there for hours in a low 80's range should be warned about their ears. This is no joke. We will not be returning which is sad because they have good WI bar food. The levels were between 79 - 83 and we were far from the bar. I would never bring children there esp. infants. Children's ears are fragile and harming eardrums due to excessive noise is a risk that should not be taken. I really do not understand why the Valley does this I am sure we are not the only people who find the noise offensive. read more

I brought a group of 12 Friends for a BD party, I'd called ahead a few days and said we would have the Prime Rib. A few problems, they ran out, only had one rib, and made it stretccccccch to accommodate 6, made Ribeye steaks for the 2 that wanted it, 2 got charged for Prime that had Standard Buffet.. which was $5.00 a head more, but everyone was OK I want arguing over $15.00 on a $ 400.00 bill plus Tip! It's not the best decision to bring a group that large considering it's a "Special" with limited sales.. one Prime usually? I'd go to Wiederholtz, the Prime is about $ 3.00/ person more.. but the drinks at Valley.. were much much cheaper ..for a group that likes a few cocktails! 41 drinks, $125.00... Wiederholtz about $280.00 So all in all a few little hiccups, but a Greattttttt! Deal, service great with the group , several guests left a tip.. so I'm sure the Waitress was Happy! read more

Had breakfast there the first time in a few years today. Summary - took an hour to get our food, coffee is poor quality and it is NOISY. I mean really noisy - we had to up our volume to be heard at our table for 2. Prior owner put things in place to help with the noise by the current owner has removed them so the noise is worse. Alyssa & I have made this one of our favorite All-You-Can-Eat Friday Night Fish Fry's in the 5 years we've been coming here. Since it is so far out there for us, we don't get by as often as we would like. In thinking about another get together with fellow Yelper, John O, this place came to mind. It wouldn't be too far for him to travel. Plus, we'd be going to one of our favorites! I asked him about it and John knew of this place because he had been to it several times before. We set a date and made a plan. After a couple of days, I thought about how much fun it was dining with Yelpers Jenny & Sam. I had a feeling that John would think kindly of them, too. I asked him if he wouldn't mind adding a couple more to our table. He thought the more the merrier & even asked them himself. Jenny & Sam were down with it! So, now we had an evening planned with more Yelp friends! We had a couple of errands to run in Hudson before our meet up time of 6. When we got them done, we were hoping to stop by & try out a new Brewpub in Hudson. But we were in that time frame where if we do that we'd be late for supper & if we went straight to The Valley, we'd be there early. We opted to be early. From Hudson, we took Highway 35 South to Highway E. That dumped us out onto Highway 10. Which we traveled for less than a mile West to find The Valley all lit up in the great big darkness of this country. The Valley is in the middle of nowhere, right off of Highway 10. But for being in the middle of nowhere, somehow people find this place. Parking lot was packed with 4x4 trucks. The clientele inside fits those 4x4 trucks. Camouflaged mesh hats. Throw in blaze orange vests & snowmobile boots and that sums up the dress code. Very local. When you enter the place, you're walking into the bar. There is a surprising tap line. Around 12 choices? South Shore Nut Brown Ale was a welcome sight. Things are wide open in here and you'll find your way around easy. Alyssa, Pheona, & I found a table that would fit our group. I searched out for a highchair. I found a stack in a corner by the restrooms. I got Pheona all set up, while Alyssa got us some drinks. There isn't table service here. After Alyssa came back, I went up to pay for our suppers. They have a cash register set up in front of the buffet line. It is a cash only business, however, they have an ATM just across from the register in case you forgot. I was lucky and no one was waiting to pay, so I just walked right up. There are times where we have waited in a line 20 deep. I paid and told the lady we'd be up in a little bit. She said just to tap her & she let us go through. I went back to our table and sipped on my beer while Alyssa decided to go up and grab some cold salads for us and Pheona to share. She came back with a delightful looking plate. Potato Salad, Tuna Salad, Three Bean Salad, Cut Veggies, Pickled Herring, and Coleslaw. We munched on those until John arrived. After getting our hellos in with him & directing him to the ATM, Sam & Jenny show up. Now that we all made it, we took turns up at the Buffet line. With all the cold salads they offer up, they have a decent amount of hot items, too. The hot items are served in those big white crock pot warming tubs. Just like at a church function. Baked Beans, Au Gratin Potatoes, Skin On French Fries, Ham, & of course Beer Battered Cod. Everything is homemade and portioned well. I got a plate of everything but Ham. The Fries were crispy, crunchy, and super fresh. I feel like they hand cut these in house. The Au Gratins are very homemade. Perfectly hearty for a cold winters night. The Baked Beans aren't typical. They look like they are, but when you bite down. You're met with a snap. It feels like maybe they weren't soaked enough the night before to soften them up. Flavor was good, but texturally, different. Now for the Star of the Show. The Beer Battered Cod. Holy BeGeezus! It's Perfection. Light, crispy, golden brown nuggets of love. The fillet is moist and flaky. Wonderful white insides. Squeeze lemon on it & I don't think there is any better Cod out there. They offer Tartar at the end of the buffet line, but there is no need to use any. This Fish stands out on it's own. They keep the portion levels for the Cod spot on. That way, every time you go up, the Fish is fresh from the fryer. They also offer water, milk, and coffee in the price of the Buffet. The milk is served in one of the old school stainless steel lift up handle like thingy. The price is $11.25. For the quality & quantity, it's just the right price. There is a sense of community here in the middle of nowhere. We love that. We also love getting together with Yelp friends. Thanks for coming along John, Sam & Jenny! read more

Sunday afternoon all you can eat chicken. We planned our trip to Minnesota for my mother's birthday so we could go to Valley Bar and Grill for chicken. We get there once every two years...if we lived here, we would be blimps. The chicken is the best chicken....it's pressure-cooked. That's why it is so moist. Then it gets a quick fry to make it crispy. OMG - it is so good. I eat one huge piece of white meat. My husband takes the legs....its the only place that we can get good fried chicken. Then bisquits and gravy. Tonight we had cucumbers in a dressing, cole slaw, chicken and bisquits and gravy. We topped it off with chocolate pudding. My mother - whose birthday it is (she's 89) had three plates of chicken and bisquits and dumplings. All you can eat for $ 10.50. We love this place. Nothing fancy...it's a bar with a room people that people eat in. But we love it. read more

I've been going here for years, the food is always good, decently priced, and everybody is friendly. Recently I came here for lunch and got a cheeseburger with fries and an ice cold root beer from the tap in a frosty mug. Came to a little over $8 and was so worth it. We have been here on a number of occasions and brought friends here who really loved it. It is a traditional Wisconsin Friday fish fry--understanding that Western WI has Cod for the fish most of the time. In the Northeast you can find Perch or Bluegill and I have heard of a place in Northern WI that does Walleye. But back in the day when this was known as "Joe's Valley" the fish fry was brought in by a family of fish-fry-specialists. It therefore, like most fish fry, is served in stainless steel pans buffet style. That is what a fish fry is! If you want sit down, waiter server fish fry there are places that do that and do it well. But if you want a REAL fish fry, this is it! BTW, those "fish-fry-specialists" now own the bar. So how is the fish? It is pretty good. Like any fish fry you hope to be in front of the pan when the cook brings out a fresh batch just out of the fryer. Mine last Friday was a bit dry and overly crispy, but I know I have had better here. It is the luck of the draw. The beans are real honest to goodness homemade, the au gratin potatoes likewise taste like my mom used to make, the coleslaw is far better than I made when I worked in a restaurant years ago and the ham is decent ham (some good mustard would be nice however). I am torn here on three or four stars. I would give the food four for its authenticity, but the restaurant has large tables like a school lunchroom and the acoustics are unbelievably bad. Add the big crowds and it does feel a bit like lunchtime back in high school. But then again, that is a real fish fry on a Friday night in Wisconsin. I have not done the Sunday chicken for a few years, nor been here on an off night for eating off the menu, but I have good memories of both. And every time we do the fish we say we need to come back for the Sunday chicken or just to have a nice bar dinner. read more

Establishment appears to be clean and sanitary. The "bar" is anything but that. The liquor selection was very poor consisting of about 13 varieties. The billiards table was taken by several small children that were rather loud and lacked any apparent chaperone, repeatedly bouncing the billiards balls on the tile floor and screaming. The bartenders are less than friendly, catering to only the obvious locals and showing utter disregard for my wife and I. Decent selection of craft beers on tap. If you decide to come here bring cash money as they do not take cards of any kind and during our experience the atm was not working (go figure). Their food is great, and they give you large sized portions for the price. The service there is great and we had a great experience there over all. We tried lunch but want to go back to try their dinner and brunch menu too. I had their petite size portion of Terra Ramen Bowl and the meat is so tender and again they give you a lot. I also tried their An Almost Italian Chicken Sandwich with the Asian Cole Slaw. My husband had their soup of the day and The Cuban Sandwich. We didn't finish our food because there was a lot but did decide to try dessert. My husband got the raspberry Crème Brulee and I tried the Pot de Crème. BEST.FISH.FRY.EVER!!! My Grandpa took me here as a kid and I have instilled it as a tradition since. Sundays are good for Chicken too. It's Friday and a tradition to have "fish fry" on most Friday's in Wisconsin. Ordered fish and two sides from the Valley Bar and Grill, For pick up, only to discover when returning home, we had no lemon slices and no tartar sauce. Being only 2 miles away, I called them and let them know that I would be returning to get those two condiments. Returned and called them from parking lot, informing them they could bring out my condiments. They informed me that I would have to come inside to "Pay" for the tartar sauce. I asked how much and was told it would be $4 for the tartar sauce. I asked them if they charged for catsup on their hamburgers and was informed what it takes to make tartar sauce. I told them I did not have a mask and would not enter (WI as most other states prohibits entering a public place without a mask) and things went downhill from there. I ask the public community, do you get charged for tartar sauce at Arby's, McDonalds, Burger King or any other restaurant when you order fish? We all know the answer to that question!!! The best part about this place is the food. The food is excellent and the price is great. I have never had one complaint about the food or the price you pay for it. Great variety of food. And they deliver!!! Biggest issue with this bar is a couple of the bartenders. I had to wait to get served a drink for 20 minutes while the bartender served her friends and I was sitting two stools down from them. I finally left because she was extremely rude and only served her friends. Noticed she was the same way with anohter group. I've had some rude bartenders, but some really great ones too and the owner is great. Again, food is terrific and definitely worth the price. I'd recommend to anyone. read more

Second only to the fish fry is the Sunday afternoon/evening chicken fry. Outstanding! Their regular menu items are pretty status quo for a bar and grill, but they are very good. I would also highly recommend the Valley for breakfast. Excellent food, abundant portions and very reasonably priced. This place has always been a popular destination for the locals, but with the changes in decor and the addition of a regular menu and breakfasts over the last several years, people come from all over the place to eat at the Valley. The only seafood I eat is deep fried fish. This is the best I have ever had. During lent we tend to try other places close by, however, just don't cut it with me. We have been going here for over 5 years now and with that in mind that is how long I have been trying to find a place closer to home with a good fish fry and no one has come remotely close. The ham is also the best, it's hard to explain, other places I've had ham didn't taste as good. Valley Bar & Grill has enjoyed a reputation for delicious fried fish for years. We used to make the trek to Ellsworth several times a year for their Friday night fish fry. Sadly, what we were served at their fish fry today did not live up to their previous high standards. After a 15-year absence, we were excited to make the long drive from St. Paul to Wisconsin for their Friday fish fry. We had been talking about it for weeks and were so looking forward to their tasty, flaky, hot morsels of delicately battered fish. What we received today, however, were big chunks of chewy, tough and tasteless fish, deep fried in an unseasoned batter. It tasted like an old tough fish. It was so tough, in fact, that I had a hard time cutting through some of the pieces with my knife. The ham was good. The side-dishes were okay, but not remarkable. We were incredibly disappointed. The table of four people right next to us were saying (EXACTLY) the same thing! They too, had eaten the Valley Bar & Grill fish fry years ago and felt that what they ate today was nothing like the delicious fish of years ago. So sorry to write this, but since the quality has changed drastically, I cannot recommend this fish fry. :-( read more
