Terrible dentist, nice guy though. I went to Dr Carlson in 2021 to have two of my childhood veneers re-done since my smile had changed with age. He decided it was best to shave all 4 of my front teeth down and put crowns on them. They looked OK until they all started turning gray! Additionally, the teeth kept falling out (once while talking to a friend, once out at dinner with coworkers, and another time while flossing my teeth). WTF! I finally went to a different dentist and he was shocked to see that all 4 of my teeth had decayed underneath because Dr Carlson had failed to seal the crowns properly. He also questioned why 2 healthy teeth were shaved down and crowned for no reason. Thousands of dollars later, I finally have 4 new good crowns with proper shading and size done by a professional elsewhere. Dental malpractice lawsuit? I think so. Literal nightmare. read more

Located in the quaint village of Valley Center, VC Smiles and Dr Carlson are a throwback to when dentist's actually cared about their patients, NOT their profits...Such a nice change from the big Corporate dental offices that are all about the o'mighty dollar... I actually went here, and paid out of pocket for in between cleanings for a few years... Unfortunately the only places my crappy insurance plan covered were of the garden variety Western Dental type offices, which couldn't be more impersonal...and high pressure... I was so impressed with VC Smiles, that I worked with the office manager, Patti, and found a new dental policy thru my employer that actually covered services here....and man am I happy....so is my wife... Dr Carlson, Patti, Janee, Jamaica and the rest of the staff are all equally professional, courteous, and extremely knowledgeable in the Dental Arts... Did I mention the office is very clean, and uses state-of-the-art equipment and technology.... Finding a good dentist and dental office these days is extremely difficult... Omg, I just left Dr. Carlson's/Valley Center Smiles. I have cheap HMO insurance. With that come dental offices that always make you feel they're trying to upsell you and convince you to get unnecessary work done. I had two different offices tell me I had to have my bridge replaced to the tune of $3500+ with insurance. Dr. Carlson checked it out at the special new patient rate of $199 for exam, X-rays, and cleaning. He said the bridge is fine, and all I need is a cavity filled above the front tooth. For under $500! I'm so relieved! Every single person in the office was amazing. I cannot recommend them enough! read more

Dr.Carlson and his team are wonderful! I had a loose crown that had been placed by another dentist years ago. When I called Dr. Carlson's office, I was seen the same day. Dr. Carlson replaced it while ensuring I felt comfortable. He examined and cleaned the crown. He also cleaned and prepared the tooth. Ok so I am writing this for my husband. I was asked to attend with him to his first appointment since 2003 for support. My hubby has what one would call Dental PTSD. Yes people it's a thing. He has had terrible experiences with dentists in general. I am happy to say we both were very pleased at not only the dentist himself, but also the support staff as well. My husband had a terrible infection under a bridge he had. With an immediate return call from his staff the Doctor called in antibiotics and we were seen the very next week. I can't say enough about Dr.Carlson. He's amazing at what he does. I came in a on an emergency during the holidays and he took away what I call The worse pain I have ever experienced in in my life. Dr Carlson and his entire staff are wonderful. Very expensive and you should make sure that they are part of your dental insurance network. They charge for every little thing. But they are all amazing, it's just hard financially if you have to pay insurance then pay everything that the insurance doesn't cover because they are out of network . Wish we could stay with them because they are close to home, but will need to change dentists and get one in network for budgetary purposes. read more

So grateful for this dental office! I had never been here before but live just a few minutes away. This morning I chipped my front tooth, and since I had been wanting to find a new dentist anyway, I gave them a call. They squeezed me in at 11am, but I thought it was just for X-rays and a consultation. But turns out Dr Carlson was able to fix the whole tooth today! I came in at 11am and was done and out by 12:07! And it wasn't as expensive as I thought it was going to be. I scheduled a cleaning with them Wednesday! He does everything, and I mean every dental need you have, right there in his office. My husband went to a dentist in escondido and was treated poorly and received a sales pitch that he needed to buy some tool to help him clean his teeth. Our family was happy with Dr. Carlson and his services until we switched insurance. One of our sons had an appointment scheduled and he gave Patty the new card and said "I have new insurance. Do I need to do anything, reschedule or do you need to check on what's covered?" She made a copy of the card, didn't look at it, and told him "No, everything should be the same." Now, any experienced person would know that is not the case and an insurance change will not automatically equal the same coverage. My son is in college, and was very upfront about the new dental insurance and was relying on her assistance. A few weeks later, he receives a bill for triple his originally quoted cost and patient responsibility. Turns out, Dr. Carlson's office is not in the new insurance network. It would have been a five minute phone call or a two minute online check by Patty to check. My son called and emailed several times. No response. Dr. Carlson did finally reply to him and said Patty told him she had specifically told him that things might not be covered and he CHOSE to continue his appointment. Yeah, NO. We then paid the originally quoted patient responsibility fees and initiated a dispute with our insurance carrier for the difference in out of network fees. We also informed Dr. Carlson's office we were disputing the charges and wished to go to binding arbitration as is our right and what you have to agree to do in their office's patient dispute protocols. Weeks go by, no response from Dr. Carlson. A letter shows up, stating they've "terminated our patient status" and we will have no access to any dental records and they've written off the charges. Terrible customer service. I'm extremely disappointed in how this was handled. The worst is Patty outright lying to Dr. Carlson and him supporting her in her mistruths. Shameful. read more

Completely outstanding! The best dental office by far! They have a small town feel and you can tell they really care about you. After everything my son and I went through to find the perfect dentist from wrong X-ray's, to overcharging, over/wrong billing, and switching through a few different big box dentists... We finally came to Valley Center Smiles (which is in our backyard). We should have started here from the beginning and it would have saved me so much headache and money. Even with this dentist being out of network for me, they told me ahead of time about what they think I would be billed for. I checked out my Cigna plan today, and holy cow... No surprise they were correct. I loved everything about this office and most importantly they are extremely ethical in their practice! My son loved them, I loved them, and they will continue to now be our dentist. Thank you Dr. Carlson for making my son feel so welcomed and safe. He trusted you and after everything said he was not afraid of the dentist anymore and you are his favorite! You run such a professional practice and I am happy to tell everyone about you, especially after everything we have been through trying to find the right dentist.
