And that's not the first time or out of the norm, happens regularly. And when you call customer service they always say we are short handed. Now they're say they are short 85 drivers. Been saying that for over two years. It's all BS, and there's drivers who won't stop, they sometimes make their own detours, yes it's true. Others stop and refuse to go or threaten to kick everyone off the bus, claiming people are smoking drugs without actually seeing anyone doing this. I have lived all over the country and the transit system (bus line) in Phoenix and surrounding areas SUCKS! I just got off the phone with an agent trying to figure out when buses 5279, 5280, etc. debut services. That lady was of no help at all, saying she can't help. The point being is that I'd like to see Phoenix use XN40's on routes like 41-Indian School and 29-Thomas. Relaxing way to go downtown. My son is starting school downtown, and we took the light rail yesterday. We drove to the very spacious parking lot on Dunlap and 19th. We parked as close as we could. It wasn't crowded at all so we got a good spot. Tip: get a car sunshade for the summer. We went purchased a Reduced All Day Ticket for $2 for my son, and an All Day Ticket $4 for myself. The kiosks take credit card and also cash. The trains are clean and well air-conditioned. The emergency button is near the handicap access chairs that flip down. There is a bike rack. There are free pamphlets showing Valley Metro access to popular tourist destinations. We waited for less than 5 minutes and then boarded the train. To travel 7 stops, it took 20 minutes. The train wasn't crowded at all. We had a person who did not respect the headphones rule and blared his music filled with cuss words. We moved to a different part of the train. No one checked out rail passes during my 4 trips yesterday. No one checked my rail pass previously. I wondered if some people hopped on and off the light rail throughout the day considering it as their "free" mode of transportation or a way to escape the blazing heat. On my of my trips, a young man asked an older man if he could have his drink because he wa thirsty. The old man did not have any more. A young woman offered him the rest of her Powerade. The man was grateful. On another ride, an excitable woman engaged in conversation with me when she heard I was thinking about traveling to Arizona Mills. I learned from another passenger that the light rail was a convenient way to go to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. On my noon commute to Central and Campbell, it did get crowded. I regretted that my bottom was so huge and noted that I should lose more weight so I could fit the light rail seat better. The light rail is a great way to minimize driving in car-congested downtown Phoenix, a fun place to people watch, and a relaxing ride most of the time. I can't wait to go to downtown Tempe this weekend and also might try going to PHX Sky Harbor this way next time I travel. read more

This is the most efficient way to travel the valley. The light rail runs from Mesa drive and Main street in Mesa to 19th avenue and Dunlop in Glendale. The route cuts through downtown Phoenix connects with many bus routes and the Sky Harbor Sky train. An all day pass is only $4.00. and is good on the buses as well. I use the light rail when traveling to the airport or to Chase field downtown. There are park and ride lots in several locations along the light rail route. You can park for free while riding the light rail. When you factor in parking, gas, and fighting rush hour traffic, the light rail makes sense when traveling around the valley. OMG LADIES! I am HUGE on the bus. I've been riding it to work for 2.5 years, and am horrified that you guys aren't pushing the benefits of commuting and mass transit in this city! I love Valley Metro. I ride the Rapid bus, every day, twice a day. The rapid shuttle is part of Valley Metro, but it is a very different bus line then the city buses that I think some of you have been riding on. There are 4 Rapid Routes...1 from the west valley, (I-10 west from Avondale) 1 from the north (I-17 from Bell Road) 1 from the East, (I-10 East from Chandler) and 1 servicing the 51, from the 51 and Shea. If it were not for these rapid shuttles, I probably would not have a job, and probably have lost my mind by now. After I moved here, within 3 months, I had busted a windshield, had someone do a hit and run on me on the expressway, and basically sat in traffic for a ridiculous amt of time, so much that I was commuting an obnoxious amount of time. Finally, a fellow co-worker told me that she commutes in half the time from the same place using the bus. Since I started riding the rapid, I've been hooked. My busses are on time, my commute is 1/3 of what I was doing when I was driving, and the amt of money I have saved on gas is unbelieveable. read more

Okay.... so it is the transit system of the valley.... if you couldn't figure that out by the name. I have been using this system since September 2012, and it has its ups and downs. Coming from the Seattle area, I am basing my review comparing to there. First: buses themselves. Seattle area takes the cake in this category. The buses there are much nicer than the ones here. Buses here frequently break down, are overheated, and in some cases extremely loud. Second: Bus routes and times: Okay so this is a bit complicated to tell... certain routes in WA (the community transit ones) did not run very late... and some of the ones here do... during the week. However, the weekend service really is not that great.... last buses on main streets on Saturdays is around 8pm. However, the buses in Seattle (king county transit) ran until a little past midnight most nights. Cost: Valley Metro wins! One way ride on any bus (or light rail) is $2. Day pass: $4 and a month pass $64. Community Transit in Washington that would be about right, but if you're in Seattle it is more expensive, and even depends on the time of day, and if you're going between counties it is even more expensive..... so yeah that is a jumble of confusion, so Valley Metro wins! Other than that, the only thing I can say is the drivers aren't always that nice.... a couple times the drivers have drove past people waiting at the bus stop. And I prefer the ORCA card which is a card like a credit card that you just tap on the reader and you can refill it with either cash or a pass. The passes that Valley Metro use are very flimsy and by the end of the month are close to falling apart. read more

We waited for over ONE HOUR for a Valley Metro bus this past weekend. No joke. Phoenix in not a transit-friendly city, and I know that. I'll digress for a minute. To take a bus in a sprawling car-dependent city such as ours, most would think that you have no car, are having car problems, are poor, etc. But in planning for the ultimate wild night out we decided to do the responsible thing and take cabs into Scottsdale. The next morning I woke up with only $5 in my pocket. Oops. It could have been worse -- I could have woken up to a worse surprise. (No snickering. That is neither here nor there.) Instead of asking friends to cart me around, the urban explorer in me decided to take the bus. Why not? I'm not above it. I walked over to the bus stop at Scottsdale Fashion Square and waited, and waited. 20 minutes turned into 30. 30 turned into 40. I called the phone number on the bus stop sign and got some automated service telling me my bus would be there in 18 minutes. Great!! A total of one hour. I probably could have walked the 7 miles home in faster than an hour. Weekday waits aren't much better. Your hour wait will lessen to a superconvenient 30 minute wait. Some express routes (on the freeway and a handful of major roads) run more frequently, but are few and far between. I've used many bus and rail systems, from the MTA (NY & LA) to the CTA, and BART and Muni. And Valley Metro probably ranks below all of them. (OK, maybe not that one smelly, filthy Muni bus I rode) I might actually ride the bus more frequently if it ran more often. But understanding that Valley Metro probably operates under simple economics (supply and demand) I don't see them budging to run more frequently if ridership isn't there. But guess what? I'm not going to ride buses, if they are that inconvenient. So there you have it. Other than that, the bus ride itself seemed to go much quicker than I thought, and wasn't as dirty as other bus systems. Plus it was only $1.25 to ride. Hopefully more Phoenix citizens will ride transit - I think that's the only way bus service will improve (not to mention improving traffic and air quality :-)) I'm eager to see how light rail works out, but if it is as disappointing as the bus then count me out. Shame on us Phoenix. We deserve better. read more

During the blazing hot summers, bus drivers will not bother waiting for you to get to the stop that they are coming into 5 minutes early and leave you in the heat. Buses are constantly breaking down, causing you to be 30 minutes late to wherever you're going. This is, on top of, people acting nasty on the bus and the drivers doing nothing about it. I have seen public transport really improve in the Phoenix area over the last 20 years. Mind you, I drive 70% of the time, but that being said, the buses now run longer hours from early, early morning until nearly two the next morning. The light rail is super quick and efficient but it is dismally maintained. The light rail cars are filthy, they are fully of graffitti and they have been taken over by the homeless and the druggies of Phoenix. Bus coverage has really improved and is now more reliable and extends to a good part of the Valley. That being said, those who use the buses are really the lowest of the low in Phoenix and the average traveller needs to be careful of pickpockets, muggers, thieves, rapists and the like. There is never a police presence on the light rail nor on the buses unlike other major United States cities. In fact, 80% of those using the light rail are fare jumpers. Practically no one pays to use the light rail. And the city does nothing about it. But it is there and it is dependable in case my car breaks down and the fares are relatively cheap ... higher than in most major American cities, lower than in others. read more

Still is amazing after the 2 years I haven't lived in Phoenix, the bus situation still hasn't improved. Most buses in the West valley still don't go past a certain hour, and it's still a hassle using the bus to the airport. Getting a bus and light rail pass is still more simple on a light rail platform. I did love the new line of red paint "ticketed riders only". Yeah, because that'll stop 'em. For the 5th (?) largest state in the country, Valley Metro seems to be very hit and miss. Most of the drivers I have dealt with have been very friendly and helpful. I can't imagine having to deal with Phoenix's traffic and customers every day. And VM has FINALLY extended bus hours to run earlier and later. Again, 5th largest state.. Sadly, many of the bus stops are nightmares, with transients sleeping, living, congregating, drinking alcohol, selling drugs and harassing VM's customers. The stops have become a blight on the streets of Phoenix and a haven for drug users and thieves. I use the bus multiple times every week and have to deal with being harassed for money and/ or cigarettes, every day. I have had to chase away transients that were harassing women at the stops. With all the money we spend on furniture for our legislators, light rail (which will never make any money) and building sports arenas, it would be nice to feel safe waiting for the bus and not worry about needles on the ground. read more

I don't even know where to begin. I've never used the public transportation here in AZ until this year, and I probably won't bother using it again before my fiancé and I move. The very first time we used the bus, we went into Surprise. The first bus was on time. By the time we were done walking around and waiting for the second bus, it drove right past us. We were clearly standing on the side of the road, in the summer heat. They didn't even slow down in a quiet residential neighborhood, mind you. So it's not like they were unable to stop because of traffic as there wasn't any. Since then we've used the bus system a few times here and there, none of the drivers passed us but they were consistently never on time. The last time we tried to use the bus (until yesterday) we waited for 20 minutes then gave up and walked into a restaurant and saw the bus finally arrive about 10-15 mins later- a whole half hour late. Recently my fiancé was applying for jobs in the East valley and was planning on getting a month pass for the bus to get to work. We are both extremely glad we didn't waste the money or time. Yesterday we decided to use 2 all-day passes to go to Scottsdale and walk around the Fashion Square Mall, then go to the Botanical Gardens. We went to the first stop and the bus was late. Not too big of a deal since we don't expect them to ever be on time at this point. When the bus finally arrived, about 10 minutes late, it flew right past us. I called it in and was told the driver must have skipped the stop since they were running late, but they should have stopped to let us on. I think that's pretty obvious, but okay. The next driver stopped and got us a half hour later. This second bus however arbitrarily stopped its route halfway to Scottsdale road and said it was the last stop. My maps clearly showed the route was supposed to go all the way, and when people started asking the driver which bus they needed to take to get to Scottsdale if this wasn't it they barely said anything and sounded irritated. We walked across the street and waited for the next bus, again another 20-30 minutes. Finally the third bus showed up, vaguely on time, we got to the mall and walked around for a while before walking around Scottsdale Road for another few hours. Then we decided to start going to the Botanical Gardens around 5pm. So we sat and waited to no surprise for an extra 10 minutes as the bus was late. We get on and needed to stop at McDowell. The speaker and the display screen never showed the stop for McDowell Road, so we missed it and had to get off in Tempe, and you guessed it- wait for another bus. Around this time it's nightfall so it's pretty cold. The next bus was again vaguely on time. This one stopped at McDowell. We crossed the street for the 17 West bus, and waited. From around 6:15 until 7pm there wasn't a single 17 West bus. We saw several 17 East, and the 72 we were just on. Eventually the bus arrived, and we got off to the Botanical Gardens- which didn't let us in with our culture pass- so we walked back to the stop to go home. Now my map route for the bus is saying the 7:49pm is the LAST bus until 5am. Luckily, the 7:19 was late as we got to the stop at about 7:20 and waited a few minutes. By some miracle, the bus didn't pass us and we got on, ready to be done with the day. Of course it wasn't so simple. After a few stops the bus was packed and filled with people coughing, playing loud music, shout-talking, on the phone arguing, quite a few smelling really horribly, and no one having any semblance of personal space. Halfway through the route someone stood up by our seats, with me on the isle, and leaned so far I had to shove up against my fiancé so they didn't touch me. The buses all have signs posted that they're "safe places", but I've never felt less safe. People were talking about guns, someone cat called a lady sitting behind us, and an older guy was loudly exclaiming some sexist speech about "the American dream" to the whole bus. I understand people have free speech, but there should definitely be some rule for disrupting other passengers on the bus, like there is in Japan. There also shouldn't be a situation where people have to move in their seats to not be touched by strangers. I shouldn't have to worry about our safety while on a public bus, that makes the whole public transportation system meaningless. This *is* a paid service, so there should be some level of quality assurance. We might as well walk everywhere and hope nothing bad happens to us, it's the same amount of risk. And of course, this driver also had to be told by several passengers to stop for someone running for the bus. If you need to find a way to work I would suggest carpooling or getting a bike. Especially if you value your time and safety. read more

One time I purchased a projector. I was so excited to get home and play with it, I left the cords and everything except the projector in a bag on the bus. I knew the bus route so well, I waited for the bus to return, and it did. When it did, the same people were on, they all gathered my bag and held it upfront and when the bus pulled up and I stepped back on, we all rejoiced at how well that worked out. It made everyones day that we are all compassionate. Ive seen some things happen on metro and they have all mainly been pleasant. I have met people I will probably contact forever on the Valley Metro. A real community feel and the staff are so helpful in directions. They know the road! Highly recommend Valley Metro. I always stood at the front if the bus next to the driver. Recommended as well if you are not feeling specifically social. Sitting is almost guaranteeing some sort of social dialogue. read more

I first took this city bus way back when I was in college (1980s) when I didn't have a car yet. As a full-time student on aid, I was able to ride the bus for free to/from campuses (Phoenix College & ASU) by my apartment, where it was much easier than driving and finding parking / parking fees, which can cause tardiness. Of course, time was different and the riders then were "normal" and tolerable. Fast-forward to today. Hoo! What has happened? I usually use the Light Rail to events but sometimes I'd have to also take the bus to sometimes transfer because the Rail doesn't take you all over metro Phoenix. Let's just say I'm glad I am not in college today. Based upon my observation as a non-regular rider, Valley Metro is still stuck with their so-so service: drivers either late or slow, air cond either not on or freezing, dingy & smelly, on-board fare box reading the passes that slow everything down with the bus stalling on a busy road because the passes are being read, lots of wheelchair users / bike riders / people begging drivers to get on for free or asking drivers too many questions about destinations on-board instead of getting info from a book or online before boarding...all causing people to be late to class or work (mostly because they'd have to transfer to another bus). I like it better when you could pay change and get a transfer which was speedier (and better for the landfill) than the passes. And, I prefer to ride the long bus. The freezing air cond is a heath issue because it's not good to go from extreme heat to extreme cold back to extreme heat. And, if it's 100 degrees out, who wants to carry a sweater? I had to remind a couple drivers to turn down the a/c a notch- one complied, the other said he couldn't do it (right). Also, what's with the obsessive new rule with dropping riders off at bus stops only? I like it when they used to drop off at intersections. The driver refused to pick up a guy who signaled that since the bus was at a stop light if he can be picked up right there at the corner on the sidewalk but the driver pointed him to run to the stop. The poor guy ran huffing & puffing, and when he boarded the bus at a bus stop, he had to catch his breath. He was a grown man and not at risk of being hit by a vehicle if the driver had opened the door for him at the intersection(!) On the plus side, a couple times when I took the Rail & bus recently, the fare kiosks @ 19th Ave / Camelback were down for card users and would only accept cash. I have an all-day card to use public transit for free once per month, typically for events. The Rail security ticket checker saw that I was seemingly having trouble using the kiosk and used his walkie-talkie to find out, and when he was not getting a reply, he went ahead and paid my fare. I called Valley Metro about this and the agent contacted some dept and got a message that it was fixed- they had no idea why it was down and not sure whether it's that one kiosk or every one of them all over Phx. The 2nd time I had to use public transit another day was the bus and that same kiosk location was still down (fixed or not, fixed and broken again?), and when the bus arrived as I was still trying to get the kiosk to process my card, I went over to the driver and motioned that the kiosk wasn't working for card users, and he gave me an all-day courtesy pass. Just want to give kudos for the services I received from the 2 Valley Metro workers. Just thank-you again! Oh, and another kudos to an agent over the phone last Christmas, when I called them about the bus route / alternate stops for Glendale Glitters. The agent was very personable! When I told her why I inquired about this route, she quickly told me she was just at Glendale Glitters after I asked whether she'd heard of it or were there. At least twice a week I get passed by the stupid bus drivers. They seem to love NOT stopping for me. There have been times where they didn't stop and just passed me two times in a row! I'm right next to the bus stop sign, I wear a mask, I have my phones flashlight on, I wave them down, they look at me, and they keep on going. The times they don't stop for me the most are often after customer service is closed. I fear the only way to make them stop for me is to get right in front of them and risk getting hit! Don't trust the good reviews on this. Yes it's good if you're not an every day traveler. If you take the light rail once a year then yeah yay great. But dealing with them for over 6 years. They're never on time always more then 5 10 minutes late every route each day for 6 years!! And they have the audacity to charge 64 dollars a months for a pass. Do yourself a favor if you can don't ride the public transportation in Arizona Maricopa county. We're are the worst city one of them when it comes to transportation. Many times there's no AC during the summer drunk passengers all the time it's absolutely horrible to charge us 64 a months times twelve if you have to rely on it. Only those who ride it all the time know they're horrible. Babies women with dads sweating in 100 plus weather with no ac it's absolutely disgusting how they treat the people who keep them running. There has been countless times I go to look up the schedule for the bus, head to the bus stop around the time I should and as I'm walking towards the bus stop the bus driver is driving away. so he is showing up way earlier than he is scheduled for or Google is fucking everyone over. Just wanted to add something positive. Well the bus stop I go to first has had the bench replaced with a new one that has arm rests so the homeless cannot lay down anymore. Hands down, the single worst public mass transit system I have seen ANY PLACE I have ever lived or traveled to (and I am an avid world traveler). I've been riding this system on and off (I vaccilate between non-Phoenix-metro cities and here a lot) for roughly 10 years, and yeah, for a few of those years I would also drive a car here and there, so I have a sound basis of comparison. This is a joke compared to other cities in the USA (and abroad) that have equivalent populations. Hell, in NYC and LA, it's SOOO much easier to get around even though those places are larger and more densely populated. Phoenix is easily 30 years behind every other city-size comparable mass transit system that's out there. Get with the times! We need: busses that run MORE than once per 1/2 hour (and that's at it's current fastest), busses that are ON TIME (DAILY, they are never on time. Valley Metro: When you go on strike, do you know who you're fucking over? Poor people who have no other way to get to work. What are you striving for each time you strike? Your drivers are consistently rude and nasty and your buses are always late. Whenever a bus arrives on time, it's probably actually the bus that should have been arriving 20 minutes ago. Since the last time, nothing in the way of service had improved. Rather, it had gotten worse. Do you know how many times an Orbit in Tempe has almost run me over when I'm riding my bike? When my girlfriend called to complain about it, the operator said something like, "Oh, him. We know all about HIM!" Yet, he was allowed to work there and continue endangering the lives of how many people? Ridiculous. Until you can get the buses to run on time and not treat customers like shit (seriously, the way you guys treat riders sometimes is ridiculous; my ass would get fired for that in a damn minute), please don't abandon the people who NEED and REQUIRE your service. I understand working conditions suck, you have to drive crackheads and everything, but fuck. You guys are the worst. You're mean and you've left so many people high and dry again and again and again. read more

I have nearly been hit by these buses, probably about a half dozen times. They are assholes. I've also seen them run red lights at least twice and not the whole "yellow...yellow...red!?! aw crap" kinda running. The last time I rode the bus someone must have shit their pants. I blame the old guy across from me. It was amusing to watch everyone get off at the next stop, but extremely inconvenient to walk the extra distance to class. I haven't been on since. *ASU has free bus passes for all students, which is the only thing that makes it worth riding. Go to the bottom floor of the towers where you buy parking passes and get yourself a semester pass. read more

If you want to get anywhere fast that doesn't involve the light rail...you're pretty much out of luck. This is one of the fastest growing cities yet has the worst public transit system. Only reason I use the light rail/bus is because I can't drive yet and gas is expensive. Bus: Expect broken A/C systems in the summertime, creepers after 8PM, and buses that show up an hour late even on weekdays (I'm thinking the McClintock Apache bus station Southbound right here). Oh and you may not even want to trust the posted bus schedules at their respective stops because they never arrive on time. Light Rail: The light rail is decent although I wish for a city this big they had just gone ahead and done it back in the 60's when they had decent funding to do so from what I heard from an old-time valley native. Sometimes you can get free rides: for buses if the fare box is broken; the light rail if no security is on board (usually early mornings, afternoons). read more

When you are new to Phoenix metro area, you think people are car worshipers. When you take the bus more than 3 times for longer distances where you have to actually change line....you understand why in this ridiculously HUGE city you need a car. For a car ride of 15 minutes, calculate 1 hour or more. If you are lucky, no bus will run late, and if you are more lucky the bus will actually stop at its stop.
