I was having some issues with my transmission and this seemed to be the most recommended tranny shop (by mechanics) in the area, so, I decided to give them a try. My transmission began to slip, so I was fearing the worst. I dropped the car off in the morning and about two hours later, I got a call back from the shop stating that they had found the issue - the transmission oil was leaking -- an hour later my car was fixed. Overall, the mechanics seemed pretty honest, however, the place was slightly pricey. Overall, it was a pretty good shop and I would probably go back there for a transmission related issue. read more

Excellent choice. The reverse drum went out on my 2001 BMW with a ZF automatic transmission. I could buy a used on and rebuild it or buy a rebuilt one and install it or I could have someone do it for me. Pricing out the options, the money was the same as taking it to a shop (with less hassle for me). These guys are very professional. They rebuilt all the clutch packs and the valve body, secured a rebuilt torque converter and finished in 3 days! Even better, they are located right next door to a car rental shop. Perfect. I would have picked them from among the local rebuilders anyhoo: been in business for 31 years. That doesn't happen by accident. Here's the kicker - they scheduled a follow-up appointment for a month later to make sure everything was good. It was and I'm very pleased with the work they did. My 2003 Jetta had developed a clutch problem that I had waited a little too long to remedy, and Rick was really great. He recommended a new clutch, and explained everything in detail before giving me what I thought was a very reasonable price, and when I picked up the car, it ran like a champ. One week later, I noticed the gear shift was sticking, and I brought it back. I have a 2002 Mazda MPV which suddenly had the overdrive light start flashing and had very hard shifting. I had good results with VALUE TRANSMISSION several years ago with a BMW which needed a transmission rebuild, so I went there again. Rick, the owner tried all of the computer checks and came up with nothing. So , being an old timer he tried diagnosing with an ohm meter. He came up with an error code for a temperature sending unit, and I authorized him to replace it. The car still had the same problem, so he told me to take it to Mazda since they had more experience with this type of vehicle. After putting many hours into diagnosing the problem, he charged me only a small amount for the part he replaced. Mazda came up without an explanation as well, and charged me $120 for the "diagnosis." They also offered to replace the transmission with a rebuilt for over $4000. Rick had asked me to let him know what Mazda found for curiosity's sake. I told him about the non-diagnosis, and he offered me a complete rebuild for about half of what Mazda would have charged to change out the trans. This place rates a ten out of ten for honesty and service. read more

Having to have a transmission rebuilt is not something I was looking forward to doing as we all know this is not fun. I found Value Transmissions as my wife and I scoured the internet looking over reviews and calling numerous places for our 96 Corvette. I found myself speaking with Rick and enjoyed how he took the time to hear me describe what happened and shared his thoughts and suggestions. After I brought the car in he continued to explain the process and how they were going to go about confirming the issue and resolve. He literally walked me through each and every step and asked if I had questions along the way while he explained. I took my car there after a recomendation from Ice Cold Air, he shop owner recomended a rebuild after 4 days we picked it up and it started bucking like the AAMACO ad and upon arriving home noticed it was leaking fluid. Where do I begin. I own a '07 Mitsubishi Eclipse. One day it randomly just stopped turning on. Never had prior issues with the car. Towed it to a mechanic nearby, he got it to start but said the car "seems to be stuck in 2nd gear, you may need a new transmission." Anyone in my shoes would get worried because we all know trans is not cheap. Mind you, he wasn't sure and kept the car for 2 weeks. I got irritated because he couldn't pin point out what's wrong. I then towed it to a second mechanic. Whom said the same things and kept the car for an entire MONTH! I gave up and said since everyone keeps saying "it's transmission related" let me have a trans guy look at it. I towed it here to Value Trans per my cousins recommendation. Rick-- I believe the owner or manager for sure at least. Was SO knowledgeable and easy going. I towed it towards the end of day (when he closes) he waited until I arrived before he left. Next morning I get a call that he's figured out what the problem is but he will make sure and call me back within the hour. He called back promptly within the hour and said "your car is fixed." I thought he was joking, as the other 2 mechanics held my car hostage for nearly over a month combined. Rick had my car up and running THE VERY NEXT DAY! I'm more than pleased with the service I got. Mind you. The issue WAS NOT related to the transmission. I saved HUNDREDS of dollars by coming to him. It was a FUSE that needed to be replaced. When i was having transmission problems with my car, I called around all the auto shops for a quote, and one of them happen to be Value Transmissions, worst mistake ever. They said they cant not estimate transmission problems over the phone however, they do have FREE estimates and they said they will even tow my car for free. Once they got my car, thats when the "bait and switch" happen, they requested $100 for the free estimate due to the fact that it would take them an extra hour to remove some part. When I told them that I was not going to pay them money for a "FREE" estimate and wanted my car back, they said that i have to come back the next day and talk to the rick who can not be reached by phone and happen to leave for the day. Once they realized that I am not going to fall for their scam, they wanted to charge me storage fees for every day my car was there and would not give me my car back until I paid them $75 for the "free" tow. I asked to speak with the owner who was being extremely rude and discriminated against me by refusing to take my payment in the form of a Visa credit card even thou on his door was the Visa MasterCard logo. Once upon a time I took my 1992 Dodge Stealth R/T here as the transmission was stuck in safety mode and wouldn't go past 3rd gear. After paying ~$2,000+ for a remanned trans, I noticed my check engine light was on when I go to pick up. The shop tells me it was a problem with my solenoid pack and power control module. So I promptly replace those parts only to find out the CEL is still on. Keep in mind prior to the repair, the CEL never went on once. . . So I ask them what they replaced, and they say the transmission control module and tranny were swapped- I ask for the old TCM, install it myself, at their garage and WA-F'ING-LA, the CEL goes off, the codes clear and I'm a moron who paid more for parts against his better judgement as I trusted the incompetent technicians at this shop. I then demanded a refund on the part cost for the TCM and they state in so doing I will forfeit my 12k/1year warranty. So time passes on and right about to the minute, 12k miles and 1 year later, the trans failed again. . . I then sold that car for next to nothing and today i still miss it dearly. BE SMART PEOPLE- GO TO A DEALERSHIP OR AN AMOCO, DONT TRUST THESE PEOPLE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES UNLESS YOU REALLY HATE YOUR MONEY AND ARE IN A HUGE RUSH TO GET RID OF IT. read more

Rick is the absolute perfect technician. He is a total professional, took the time to perform a diagnostic on our car's transmission. When he determined that our transmission and front axles were satisfactory, he continued going above and beyond to determine if we had a wheel problem. Brought my ford explorer cause my trans took a crap on me. Rick the manager sat me down and explained my options. I decided to rebuild it even though it costed all together 2900. They are a little pricey but you pay for what you get. They specialize in transmissions and do great work so I didnt mind. The rebuilt trans came with 12mo / 12000 mile warranty and so far I have had no problems. Flash forward 7 months I had another problem with my ford explorer this time it was my transfer case leaking. Took it back to my boy Rick and took care of me again by explaining and showing me the reason and the inner seal that was bad. Again little pricey but I dont mind cause they do good work and you pay for what you get. I see the negative reviews and I dont know your stories but I realize in this world you cant make everyone happy. For every 1 bad review im sure there is 100 satisfied customers like me. After several failed attempts to be diagnosed correctly at Grossinger Toyota, I went to Value Transmission on advice from two coworkers that had previous work done. Rick and Avery not only immediately diagnosed my trans issue, they fought with the warranty company to make sure they paid for the correct fix, not just the "quick fix". A few weeks ago, Rick and his staff examined the slipping clutch on my Toyota Matrix and found that the cables and assembly governing the manual transmission were close to failing. However, repairing the clutch meant disassembling its connections all the way up into the car's dashboard area, and then conducting a nationwide search for a new cable assembly because Toyota had apparently discontinued making that part. Despite these challenges, they found a new cable assembly in California; had it shipped to Skokie; installed it in just a couple of days; did the whole job for a very reasonable price; and gave my Matrix a new lease on life. My transmission needed repair. My highly trusted mechanics at Deerfield Tire and Auto in Deerfield recommended Value Transmission. Because I honestly do trust them I had my car towed to Value. I then decided to check out Yelp for reviews on Value Transmissions.. Based on the reviews posted here I was more than a bit concerned. But...I had committed myself with that tow so I had to trust all would be fine. I heard back from Avery, who was pleasant enough and pretty knowledgeable it seemed so I went ahead and gave them the green light to fix my transmission. I was then pleasantly surprised to hear back from Avery with a update on the work and a estimate for time of completion. They met both the repair cost estimate and the time of completion. I was advised by Avery to bring the car back after a couple hundred miles so they could do a quick check up to make sure all was well. I did just that about two weeks later. it was at that time met Rick. He was a bit testy....but he was also walking with a cane so I cut him some slack given he might not be the happiest guy on earth with his obvious walking problem. He checked the car out himself, and realizing he had been testy he did apologize and we ended the visit pleasantly. I gave them 3 stars because I don't feel compelled to be over the top happy or impressed with this one visit and frankly I am not that type of person anyway. So I will sum this up by saying they are in the transmission business and they took care of my transmission just fine. My car is now running better than it has fro quite a while.
