Excellent stylist! Love it here BUT, they are now charging a surcharge for debit and credit cards! Be aware. I had a haircut and used a gift card. When I added additional for the tip, they wanted 3.00 more for a 10.00 tip! Seemed odd until I realized that even gift cards are being charged a surcharge! Sorry but the charges that credit cards charge businesses is part of their cost for running the business. I am not impressed with paying so much for a haircut and tip and then being asked for more! read more

My first appointment at this salon and first haircut since January due to COVID. Everything was super clean, temp check at the front door, and I was the only one getting haircut in the stylist area. They also have dividers between stations. On top of the amazing care and service, my cut is absolutely AMAZING and Savannah was so friendly. I will be coming back!! Sadly, the color services I've received at Van Michael both in Buckhead and at Avalon have not been up to par as of late. I will not name the 2 employees who did my color, both were female. The first colorist I saw at Van Michael in Buckhead was excellent, until her assistant burned my neck so badly that it took months to heal. I never got a real apology and they scheduled me with another new talents person who did not do a good job. For a while, I was coloring my own hair at home. I decided that my blonde hair really needed a professional working on it, so I went to Van Michael at Avalon. The first time I went for full highlights and color, I got home and realized immediately that the color was at least 3 shades too dark. The colorist got me in the next day and corrected it with highlights. I was very happy with my color for 2 months. Then I went back to the same Avalon Van Michael colorist thinking I'd found a great person at Avalon Van Michael to do my color. She did the exact same thing she did the first time, getting the shade several colors too dark, now I have to go to another Van Michael salon to get color correction. As a woman over 50, who doesn't really think about age at all, unless it's put in my face, I had to hear this colorist go on and on about how "older women" prefer "younger women" or "men" to do their color. I could not believe what I was hearing, the ageism and misogyny was beyond offensive and bordering on discriminatory. This colorist went on and on about how, "she can't do this job forever" and how she was "getting her real estate license so she'd have something to fall back on"., Good for her, great for her, but honestly, she did a TERRIBLE job on my hair and that's the main thing I'm concerned about. Luckily, I am able to get corrective color from a MALE colorist at another Van Michael salon(per her commentary), but I gave her two chances to get my hair color right, and not only did she get it wrong, but she was ageist, sexist and misogynistic in her client service. Van Michael, you need to do a class with your employees about how to operate in today's world of inclusion, or you will lose clients of all kinds. I have spent thousands of dollars at your salons through the years, but you need to take a look at your stylists and school them in how to work with diverse clientele. read more

I am a super fussy customer when it comes to haircuts. After going to Van Michael Buckhead for many years I finally decided to head to Avalon for convenience. So glad I did. Bannon was recommended as a senior stylist and he was GREAT. I have long, layered hair that requires some thinning out and find that I've often had sloppy cuts or overly texturized cuts. Bannon took his time (THANK YOU), was very precise, styled it well and then continued to perfect the cut once my hair was dry. I haven't had a cut this great in years. He was a total professional. The salon was very clean and beautiful and the front desk was friendly (not the case in Buckhead). I'm glad I made the switch and will be returning, it was a great experience. read more

I am done with this chain. Do they teach specific haircuts and nothing else? Most of my cuts have been well executed but not what I asked for. Its like I tell them what I want and then they do the cut they learned that is closest. Often too short. I have had it with them. I called to cancel my next appt and the receptionist could not have cared less why. read more

I've been going here for several years and love my stylist. But...the price for a cut and style went up by $10 without notification on each of the past two visits. That's a 30% total increase in less than 6 months. Both times I wasn't informed of the increase until after the service when it was time to pay. That's just wrong. read more

WAY too expensive. I get blowouts all the time... it's my favorite thing to do. Their "new talent" (beginner stylist) rate starts at $45 for a blowdry and the majority of their blowouts cost between 55-65+... for real? Too bad, I think they could be a lot busier if they were more affordable. I never see anyone go in there. If anyone from the salon is reading, it might be wise to offer a first time customer promotion, or happy hour for blowouts (during unpopular days and times) to get some new customers through the door. My experiences- from the greeting (and complimentary coffee or water) when I arrive, to the satisfaction of a great cut or color when I leave- make me feel like a valued customer. The services were good, and I liked the haircut, but I never went back coz I think the prices are too high for a haircut; usually I try to stay within $30 for a men's haircut. I've visited Van Michael Salons in East Cobb, Norcross, and Sandy Springs and have never been disappointed. I visited this salon in preparation for my anniversary dinner and sure enough, I loved my haircut and felt fantastic walking out. There are a plethora of stores at Avalon, so keep in mind that this salon is in between 2nd and 3rd Street - near L'octtaine and Kendra Scott, right across of Pinkberry. Please ask for Blake - he was wonderful! He gave me my haircut exactly how I wanted it and was very friendly to chat with - the time just flew by. A gem of a salon in Alpharetta and you can eat and go shopping afterwards. The only downside was my wait of 20 minutes, but it sounded like that was a rare case. read more

I got a haircut here last week and was pretty disappointed with the outcome. I specifically asked my stylist for layers (even showed her a picture of what I wanted specifically) and made it clear that I wanted a big change. She basically gave me a trim and cut a few pieces of hair around my face and called it "layers". The haircut was $90 and I probably could have gotten an equivalent cut somewhere much less fancy for much less money. My stylist was nice but I do wish she listened to me more. This isn't the first time I've come here and felt like the stylists just wanted me in and out quickly. I won't be coming back :( read more

This place is severely overpriced for the skill level of their "expert" stylists for a haircut. I've been a few times & never leave SUPER into my hair, but it looks fine once it's grown out. The last time my hair was completely BUTCHERED. 1000% I have "the Rachel" haircut. I don't know what the point is in asking how you usually style your hair if they don't care about it? - I put my hair in a ponytail or bun almost daily. -- Cool, so cut it short enough and put the shortest layers on my life in my hair so it's too short to do either. Thanks. - I hate bangs, I've done the side bang thing it doesn't work for me. -- Cool, just cut HALF of my hair into bangs in the front. Awesome. Then ask after you've done it if it's too short. It's a little late for that. -- I curl my hair & it looks like a mushroom. I straighten it and I look like one of the frickin Beatles!! -- Good thing it's not the holidays and I don't have parties or pictures...OH WAIT. Seriously, save yourself and go elsewhere. I usually don't write these but as a loyal Van Michaels customer (every 5 weeks for the past 3 years), I was disappointed that when I google searched "Van Michael East Cobb" that the google site's number apparently was for Avalon. I was made unaware that I was actually talking to Avalon instead of East Cobb when I booked. When I showed up at East Cobb and they told me that # was for Avalon I tried to see if I could make the drive and if they could still take me. As someone who travels a lot for work I rearrange my whole schedule to make these appointments (it's important!). Although my stylist was running 15 mins behind, they said they would not take me (25 min drive) and I even asked if I could leave without the blow dry. They did not try to find another stylist for me or attempt to re-book for another day. I am surprised and unhappy with this salon location and will not be returning. read more

After leaving my previous review, the manager Chloe reached out to me. She apologized for my experience and was super nice; I felt like she really did want to make my unsatisfactory cut up to me. She set me up for a new appointment with Blake, who was much more experienced than the previous person who cut my hair. He was fantastic. Very personable, took time to really figure out what I wanted, looked up pictures on his phone to confirm the look we were going for, etc. He took his time and didn't rush. I would highly recommend him as a stylist, and really appreciate the salon for doing everything they could to make me a satisfied client. It has been about 3 years since I have been to a Van Micheals salon and thought I would give the Avalon location a shot. However, the girl i spoke with on the phone was extremely rude to me and it reminded me why i stopped going to Van Micheals in the first place. She was not helpful and could care less if i booked an appointment with them.
