Juan came to us highly recommended from a large top commercial pool contractor. He completed a complete design build on the pool and entire backyard. He's an amazing pool contractor and even better at backyard design. He built a full 3D walk thru design incorporating pool, cabana, outdoor kitchen, fences, retaining walls, benches, etc. ....everything. Handled all permitting and built a huge hillside retaining wall adding space as the backdrop to the 8' H' x 20' W pool cabana and shepherding thru the grading department, LADBS, OSHA and LADWP @ roughly half the cost of other contractor bids. Two Architects, two engineers, real estate agents and several contractors told us we could never get a retaining wall approved and built - JUAN DID! I've referred him to several friends who he's remodeled their pools and one who had multiple pool contractors who failed to locate and repair a leak in the hot tub. Juan and his team at Vanguard Pools were great to work with. We started the remodel of our very old and outdated Anthony Pools by getting estimates from 7 different contractors. This was a unique job because the pool had not been used in almost 40 years and needed new everything. When we averaged the 7 estimates Vanguard pools fell right in the middle of the pack. But that's not why we chose Juan and his team. The estimate from Vanguard was very thorough and detailed. When it is that exact there is little room for "surprise" costs. Of course we did adjust the budget to include a separate work order, but that was because we changed our mind and opted for a heater and salt water system. Juan was able to provide this work himself and made it clear what the additional costs would be. We never felt like we were getting ripped off as can happen with other people. He was clear about the price of materials and labor. The infrastructure work done included the removal and replacement of a Pump, Filter, plumbing, lighting, electrical work, etc. he kept us well informed of the process at each step of the way. Juan and his team also ran new gas lines for the new heater as well. As the pool was very old, and deep (almost 10 feet) we had him raise the floor of the pool and add a baja shelf. Juan provided the engineering plans for the reconfiguring of the pool and made sure they were approved by our local city permit office. Juan worked with the city for our Electrical, plumbing and engineering permits. He knows what he is doing and it shows. In terms of aesthetics, Juan gave us suggestions for the coping and provided samples of the tile to be used, all the while letting us make the final choice. Another change for the pool was the plaster, or lack thereof. We chose to do a pebble finish and he honestly discussed the difference in size and color of the pebbles and how that would affect the look of the pool. Again he knows what he is talking about and we were happy for his expertise. The original estimate included items that we ended up doing ourselves, or enlisting family to do. One of those items was the pool decking. Juan coordinated with us and the workers to make sure that the work was done appropriately and would pass inspection. He provided good advice and it made the inspection process go smoothly. His response to our questions was very timely. We never had to hunt him down for anything. He was always respectful and engaging, as was his team. His customer service skills are great. We trusted him and his workers and they had access to our driveway, yard and garage to use the facilities. Vanguard workers worked well, left areas clean, and when they didn't, they made sure to clean the stray debris. Now the downs side... There wasn't really a downside except for the length of time it took to complete the project. That can't entirely be blamed on Vanguard as we were all in the middle of a pandemic and the slow pace of city permitting became even slower. Other factors such as us coordinating other work (laying concrete around pool, erecting a cinder block wall) made it slower as well. Through it all Juan and his team remained patient and worked with us to make everything come out the way we wanted. In the end we have a nice new salt water pool that is heated. We have already enjoyed it and are enthusiastically looking forward to the many years of swimming. We would highly recommend Vanguard pools for a facelift, remodel or new building of a pool. I called to help drain, clean, and refill an above ground hot tub (just moved...never had any kind of pool or hot tub before). Juan came after my work hours (5:30) and stayed until 8pm. He told me how everything works and how to take care of the hot tub myself which is exactly what I was looking for. On top of that, he cleaned the jets which were covered in gunk since the previous owner hadn't done so in a while. Finally, he even answered questions I had the next day after his service. After an extensive search we truly found the best in Vanguard Pools. Our aging pool was in dire need of an overhaul, and Juan's work was top-notch, professionally executed, and on time. His extensive knowledge helped advise best models/brands for our pool equipment replacement, and the install went smoothly and swiftly. The concrete deck and coping repairs were amazingly close in matching the existing, which is usually impossible to do. He recommended an acid-wash that improved the look of our pool plaster while saving us money. Juan also followed-up with an additional site visit to check that the system was running smoothly. By far my best experience yet with a home improvement project. I had a pool and spa installed by this company recently. Juan was very professional and work is high quality. From the day the job started, he and his workers were onsite everyday working, starting at the time he promised and working as efficiently as possible to get the job done on time, including weekends when needed. Juan and his team put in a new pool in my house in atwater a couple years ago and I could not have been happier. I can easily say Juan is the best contractor I've ever worked with period. His estimate is what he sticks to (unless you add things along the way of course which we did when we added additional decking at one point) but everything was done with utmost quality. There were many days when his team would go above and beyond at no additional cost to make things look perfect. My kids also love Juan. Juan is a magician and so easy to work with which is necessary because installing a pool turns your backyard into a war zone for a couple months.
