I tried a sample of their winter bliss Buche and it was creamy and delicious. Review of Coconut Key Lime Tart, Apple Almond Croissant, Iced Cappuccino. Cappuccino tasted like a typical cappuccino; it was good. Had about a 2 hour wait for a table at our dinner spot and we found these guys right across the street so naturally we had to check them out. Cute French Patisserie serving up creative and fancy desserts and pastries. They had a nice selection to choose from and it was so hard to decide. I went with the Royal and the Manjari (per recommendation). Both were rich and decadent and I'm glad I gave them both a shot. The cheesecake had a nice balance of sweet and tartness from the fruits. The cheesecake itself wasn't overly dense or airy so that was a plus. They also have a little private room where you can fit a small group as well. I didn't ask but they had something in there that looked like a high tea setup so maybe that's an option. Had we been in town another day I wouldn't be opposed to to going back and trying more stuff. read more

I am definitely more of a cake person than an ice cream person, and bakeries are where I prefer to stop for dessert. We walked here on a slightly chilly evening. The place is clean, well-lit, and looks very fancy. All the desserts are displayed beautifully in the case, and it's hard to choose! They even have little tea biscuits and cookies, loaves of sweet breads, dog treats, and more on display throughout the store--super tempting but all quite expensive. They also have a nice seating area. We were on-the-go so we decided to pick up a hot chocolate and dessert to eat later. The service was quick, and the staff were friendly. I'm someone who likes drinks super hot, and the hot chocolate did not disappoint! It burnt my tongue a wee bit and was also rich and velvety. It wasn't too sweet either and had more of a dark chocolate flavor. We enjoyed sipping it throughout our walk back home. We also got a chocolate hazelnut pastry for later that I can't remember the name of. It was decent but one of the richest bites I've ever had. It was SMOTHERED in chocolate and had an interesting crunch from the hazelnut. I had to stop eating it after a few bites because of how rich it was. Very cute bakery but at a high price! Everything is very small and delicate and super expensive. We got 5 little pastries and a $4 birthday candle which amounted to $70... the cashier was not very nice either! The desserts, however, made up for all this as they were pretty and tasty. Need to update my review... I came in today because they have something on their website called a "pickup tax" that is apparently the sales tax, but not knowing for sure that's what it was I didn't want to pay an extra 12% for it. So I stopped in to get some treats for July 4th. They don't have to cookies that I wanted here--they're pre-order only--which is not a problem. What is annoying is that apparently i couldn't just order them with the woman checking me out for the things I did buy today; she told me to go to the website. Oooook. I used ApplePay to pay and apparently their system doesn't process Mastercard through ApplePay. Kind of surprising since Mastercard is one of the biggest payment processors in the world, and to use a system that doesn't process it seems like a choice... luckily I happened to have that card with me, but word to the wise is to either bring your card or if you plan to use ApplePay plan on something besides MC. Lastly: I DIDN'T EVEN GET WHAT I ORDERED. When I was there this morning I wanted a Fraisier, and also decided upon a pavlova. I just opened the box so we could enjoy these and although the pavlova was there (broken into pieces, which I supposed could have been on me, and that's fine), the fraisier wasn't there. There's some sort of thing with phyllo dough or something with custard, which is not the item I wanted (I've never had a fraisier, but I know that the strawberry-and-custard item that was noted as a fraisier in their store and on their website is not what this thing is). It doesn't look appetizing to me in the least so hopefully my partner will like it, otherwise it was a waste of $8 or so. I really liked Vanille the first couple times I went here and I was planning to get my birthday cake here this year when my family visits... but I'm going to be looking for another patisserie somewhere in the city or suburbs that might be more reliable and/or have staff who seem a little less aloof and disinterested in customers. read more

Vanille has been on my list of bakery's to try in Chicago for a while now. On Halloween before we hopped back in the car to drive back to Cincy, we made the stop finally. This place is beautiful and clean. Even has a really nice sit down area for you to enjoy you food. Every pastry here is gorgeous. Not only are they gorgeous but the four or five things we took and ate on our way home were amazing. So full of flavor and richness. Actually perfect. I truly believe you could grab anything here and you would enjoy it to the fullest. They also get mass amounts of points from me for having for Halloween spooky & cute pastries. Lastly I will say the guy who helped us was really nice even though we were being indecisive and probably pretty annoying. This is definitely on my list of top "bakeries" now for Chicago. Vanille has good coffee (standard espresso drinks, iced coffee, tea, and very luxurious hot cocoa), an array of single-serve show-stopping desserts, cakes, macarons, and croissants. If you want to make a date night special or bring an impressive dessert to an event, Vanille can hook you up. They always have ready-made cakes that you can just walk in and buy without the need to order ahead. If you order ahead you can get special occasion cakes made for any event (Super Bowl party, custom Birthday cake, wedding, Easter, Father's Day, etc). This is a great spot for a date, catching up with a friend over a sweet treat, bringing out of town visitors / in laws / parents, or just a place to treat yourself to the best dessert in the city. There are some good gift options here too, like pre-packaged sugar cookies, gift boxes of macarons, and cake pops. Went in here because a friend really wanted some chocolate croissants! Left with a. Little cake and croissants that we could bake at home. I don't know that this is the easiest to find parking by but it is a very walkable business, I mean we found it by walking back and coming back after going to the zoo since it was so close! I think they may have had seats outside but they may have belonged to another business nearby. There was a few groups both sitting outside and buying things in the shop when we got there so I think their foot traffic is steady, at least over the weekend it is. I think this place has a great selection of pastries, great kits for kids, good selection for adults, and it looked like a good option for catering. I didn't see anything about getting drinks like coffee or tea, but I think that would be a great option for if you're sitting and having a sweet treat here. I got a little lemon blueberry cake thing, it was fluffy and delicious!! We also got a thing of caramels, which my friend loved! Okay, just okay. American sweet twist on French pastries. We visited on a Saturday afternoon. Ambience was cute and tray left fancy. Service was average. (Although the cashier offered the people after us a free macaron for visiting for their first time and failed to ask if we were.) We got a pistachio macaron and a strawberry eclair (as it was recommended by the person who took our order). Pistachio macaron was 7/10 (definitely not laduree but it'll do for chicago) and the strawberry eclair was 4/10 (it wasn't horrible but it was WAYYYY too sweet). In my limited experience, French pastries are intentionally sweet, they are often only sweet when they need to be. The sweetness overpowered the nice touches and made it Betty Crocker-y. read more

Last fall a friend bought me a box of macarons from Vanille and I LOVED them. Prior to that, I'd once gotten 3 or 4 from a French bakery and while they were okay, I didn't understand what the fuss was about. I thought that while pretty and brightly colored, they were nothing to write home about. These were amazing, though, and if pressed to choose a favorite flavor there's be a 5-way tie! Last fall, the same friend brought me a macaron bar--like a rice crispy treat but made of broken up macarons of all flavors! It was so good and fun and whimsical, and could not be a better way to handle yesterday's cookies! I thought I would pick one up for a friend I know loves macarons, but sadly there were none. However I was able to pick up a couple other great options and a little tiramisu for myself. My friend loved her birthday treats, but I have to say I was surprised to find my tiramisu had been frozen and was still pretty icy in the center. Lets start out with a big Warning. The Do Not Accept Cash! The inside is filled with delicious looking treats. There seemed to be about 50 things to Choose from. I chose an Ellie which is a vanilla mousse, cinnamon apple compote, brown sugar cake, caramel glaze, coconut struesel. I also got a Brownie, and a Pumpkin Cheesecake, and a Passion Fruit Egg Tart. I also got a Pumpkin Pie Slice. Everything was pricey at about $7 a piece. My favorite thing was the Pumpkin Cheesecake cake. It was the perfect combination of cheesecake and pumpkin flavor. Very rich, but worth it. My next favorite was the Pumpkin Pie. I'm a huge fan of pumpkin pie and this was in my top 10. Next was the Passion Fruit Egg Tart. I wanted an egg tart it's actually why I stopped here. The Passion Fruit was good it just became too much after a few bites. I really wish they'd had just a plain egg tart. Next up was the brownie. To me it was only okay. To be fair I prefer a cake like brownies vs fudge type, and this was fudge type. If you prefer fudge type you'd probably love this. Lastly was the Ellis, while visually a beautiful dessert, it lacked something for me in taste. The staff was very friendly and efficient. Overall for me I can only give it a 3 stars. I would only want to get 2 out of these 5 again. I would have love some choice when it came to egg tarts. It was extremely pricey, maybe not fir Chicago, I don't know. Lastly the whole not accepting cash is just tacky. Would I return? Sadly no. read more
