I just heard about this (very) French bakery right in the heart of Old Town Chicago a couple of days ago, and with friends coming in from the west coast today, my wife sent me the La Fournette for a loaf of bread and some pastries. I got there early in the morning and when In walked in the front door the aromas hit me like I was on the the Left Bank in Paris. The selection of assorted pastries hit me like a Mack Truck. My mission on this morning was a whole sliced Sourdough bread, other "goodie's" and I finished with one of the best: Coffee Lattes with Espresso mixed with steamed milk and a thin layer of foam. Before even trying their baked goods, my coffee latte was one of the best I've ever had, and I've had them all over the world. I love this place; it feels very true to roots in spite of being quite far from France. The bread is very tasty. Minor ding on consistency; I am picky enough to ask for a specific loaf, which they happily accommodate, because in my opinion you do get days where some of the batch is either under- or over-baked. Wide range of pastries, where we've enjoyed many of them. I really like the apple danish, the chocolate twist, the pain au chocolate (life tip: there is nothing called a "chocolate croissant" please stop calling it that), and the madeleines are a great treat for a "little one" or "your princess" or "children." What a cute place! They have a lot of great baked goods that are so flaky and fresh. They also have a wide array of breads to choose from and take home. The turkey panini was very delicious for a quick brunch stop. The coffee was meh and it is a little bit more pricey, but with baked goods like that and a very nice staff, I would definitely come back to try more of their baked pastries! read more

I am so blessed to be a neighbor of this incredible French bakery and have been since its opening. Totally authentic with a small area for having a bowl of French soup, sandwich and a great cup of coffee. Everything from here is most impressive and YOU WILL RETURN! The owner and staff are very friendly and are very appreciative of your visit. Fantastic customer service and never, ever rushed. Quite busy, rightfully so, but the line moves right along quickly. I have purchased practically everything over the years for myself, my company and my church and have had nothing but incredible responses. Very cute and busy French bakery! We got the pistachio hazelnut danish - AMAZING! The lemon pound cake was also very lemony and refreshing. What drew me here was the fact that's it opens at 7 a.m & many people mentioned the fact that have quiche. Said quiche was pretty damn decent &!85 served its purpose. Not the best nor worse. I also indulged in pastries & they were in. Overall I was satisfied with my purchases but to rank it amongst the best in Chicago is a stretch. Came in for a few treats early on a Friday, and ended up trying the Almond Croissant, the Berliner Beignet filled with Hazelnut, the Saucisson Sandwich which is a salami sandwich on a baguette, and a side of the pasta salad! That sandwich was SO good!! There were nuts on there which I would have never guessed to add on a salami sandwich, but it was incredible! I'm also still dreaming of the pasta salad. A spot in Old Town Chicago featuring French/European baked goods and cafe-style foods. They sell many different kinds of hearty rustic bread, such as their multigrain and sourdough. Besides, they sell pastries and other bread, such as croissant and brioche. Their sourdough was good, but I did not try their pastries. For breakfast, I tried the Quiche veggie and Croque Monsieur. In general satisfactory; especially considering the total price. The Quiche was speical to me in that it was a rectangular-shape and had zucchini inside -- never had zucchini in quiche before but I would say it went well with the eggs. I enjoyed the quiche very much. Their Croque Monsieur was not bad either but a little too saily for me, perhaps due to the ham. Despite this, I really like the gooey cheese inside and bechamel sauce topped on the bread! As the sandwich was about 60% cheaper than what sold in Venteux Brasserie, there is really not much to complain about. I drove my car to La Fournette, and while I was able to find street parking after about 5 minutes, I could see it being a bit difficult to find parking during the busy weekends. As I walked up to the bakery, it had a nice cozy authentic French Boulangerie feel, lots of old wooden tables and furniture. There were six wooden tables, with seating for two people each and a standing shelf table looking out the window. I was greeted with a "Bonjour" as I walked up to the counter. That was a nice touch. I ordered the ham and cheese baguette sandwich, the almond croissant, and the raspberry danish. I also had the cappuccino. I really liked all three food items. The ham and cheese and the French cornichon pickles complemented each other well. Although the baguette was on the hard side, it did add a nice contrast. The almond croissant and the raspberry danish were tasty without being overly sweet. The cappuccino was a bit flat, and I was hoping for something more flavorful. I wished the bathroom had more of a French ambiance, similar to the rest of the bakery. But it was a bit sterile. Overall, it is worth visiting this charming authentic French bakery. If I lived closer or had my office nearby, I would visit more often. read more

Some of the worst salad's we've ever had. Jam-packed into the containers so you can't mix anything (or even stick a fork into without spilling). Watery lettuce, bland dressing. The Niçoise salad was barely that: no green beans or potatoes, and tuna obviously straight from a can. We would have ordered sandwiches, but they were somehow out of sandwiches at noon. There is a free macaron with yelp check in so make sure to do that - they have tons of macaron flavors to choose from. I ended up buying a pumpkin beignet which was SO GOOD and very unique .. It's a little bit of a hectic ordering process but all of the staff were so sweet, that I didn't mind all the hustle and bustle. To the food. I grabbed a bag of pastries to enjoy throughout the week and had Quiche Lorraine and a Latte inside. The quiche was great and my latte hit the spot! Great crust and flavor on the quiche. The best pastry was by far the Almond Croissant. I have had many from different places over the years and this was darn good. The Chocolate Twist was decent. I wanted to like the Brioche Streussel more but it was a bit dry for me. Overall, this was a very cool French bakery with good energy and lots of artisan choices.
