I love Van's Bakery! They have a wide variety of things, and I often get birthday cakes here (flan ones or fruits ones). I got my uncle a flan cake yesterday, and the service was quick. I just chose one, and they wrote happy birthday on a piece of plastic and put it on the cake. You can also come in to order in advance if you don't see anything you want immediately. I got a small cake which served 7-12 people, depending on how largely you cut the slices. $18 which is pretty good in my opinion! read more

Their cakes are always so nostalgic to me. Van's Bakery has curated and perfected the art of making fruit tarts! This cake is made with fresh fruit, lightly-sweetened custard, and all whipped on top of an airy, and semi-crisp crust. It is perfection! The best part about these cakes is that they always have plenty ready for you to pick up, without even having to place an order! This popular Vietnamese bakery is always bustling with customers. During their busier times, you can observe the clerks briskly moving about fixing one of their tasty, creamy smoothies, taking down orders for one of their delicious made-to-order birthday cakes or fruit tarts (also a popular birthday cake) or wrapping up their fresh baked pastries. Despite the occasional line forming, these ladies manage to be pretty efficient helping a customer and sending them on their way so they can help the next. The bakery has more than just their popular fruit tarts or Vietnamese style birthday cakes (made with whipped cream instead of sugary frosting). The bakery is stocked with fresh pastries and snacks on one side of the store, another side of the store has dry snacks by the pound (although you can definitely buy less). It's self-serve so you can sort of pick out how much of each you'd like. Everything from nuts to chips to jerky can be found here. The rear area of the store has boxed cookies and treats imported from Europe - everything from crepe cookies to wafer type cookies. The prices are fair and unlike most Vietnamese stores, this bakery does take credit card (I believe the minimum is $20). There is a lotto ticket vending machine by the door for those feeling lucky. Parking can be a hit or miss depending what day and time you go. If you go during the weekend, expect to circle a few times to find parking since this bakery shares the private lot with like 10 other businesses. read more

Budget wedding cake-- if you're having a venue at a local restaurant, chances are, they have a deal with Van's where you get $10 to apply to Van's for every table at your party. For us, 22 tables = $220 of cake. That bought us 3 tiers of vanilla chiffon with strawberries in the middle. Ok. I admit I'm a cake snob. It was a beautiful cake. Service is typically very clipped, to the point, trying to make a sale, but that's ok, that's not why I'm here. Pros: 1. Affordable cake. 2. They'll try their best to make something that looks like photos you bring in, especially if you provide the fresh flowers (if that's what you want.) Cons: 1. Non-Western customer service. Not rude, just not aching to please. 2. Not all Van's locations are the same. After calling around to a few different ones looking for my originally desired flavor (taro sponge with vanilla frosting), someone on the phone told me they could do it but the order needed to be placed in person. No problem. But then the flavor that brought me in was apparently never a possibility. I was committing to buying from them anyway because of my venue package, but it was one of those things I was looking forward to and was disappointed by. 3. ... The cake isn't great. Been a few weeks since our big day. Everything should have been perfect. We assume it was. But when we start seeing pictures from our wedding day, we realize there was a big split on the bottom tier of our wedding cake. When I inform the store, they told me that they delivered in perfect conditions, and it was damage when guess was walking around and caused the floor to shake. So we waited to get the pictures from our photographer, the pictures where taken before any guess came or even before there was a cake topper on. Still they aren't accepting their fault. After dinner at Artist Cafe, I wanted to get some sugarcane drink for Nuoc Mia Vien Tay. Unfortunately, they were closed so I stopped by Van's Bakery to get some sugarcane drink. . Along with the large sugarcane drink, I picked out a slice of chocolate mousse cake and a pork pate chaud. -Sugar cane drink: cannot be compared to the one at Nuoc Mia Vien Tay. ($3) -chocolate mousse: very thin slice and guess what, it was an OLD slice! The side of this cake was DRY! This piece of crap cost $2.50. The lady just grabbed a slice behind the case and placed it right into the box. I didn't see this, otherwise, I would have asked for a fresh slice. -Pate Chaude, Pork: Under-seasoned. Came in here to order my wedding cake with my finacee. The experience was great from start to finish. It was quick and painless. The employee who helped us was extremely friendly and helpful. Just keep in mind they don't offer tastings & the only flavors they offered where white cake with strawberry or white cake with mocha (or a combination of the two). But the best part was the price. The cake was easily half the price as other bakeries. I was shocked at the price. I figured that meant the cake wouldn't be that tasty, but my fiancee assured me that she had been to plenty of weddings with Van's cakes and they were all wonderful. We also grabbed a couple random slices of cake to bring home for family, and while they weren't the strawberry cake we ordered, they were all tasty on their own which is a good sign. So...I'll update my review if I need to after our wedding in a couple months, but as of right now I am extremely happy that we chose to check Van's out. Van's Bakery has been here ever since I was a little kid and it's always been the place my mom would take me to for fruit tart cakes or other sweets alike. It's always been fun for me to walk in here, nut now that I'm older all I can think of is Diabetes Central... but that's not to say that this place doesn't have some of the tastiest Vietnamese sweet stuff ever. Selection: The selection here used to be so minimal but they expanded their selection greatly over the years. They managed to be up to date with all the crazes, and successfully surviving through them. The fruit tarts are probably what this place is known for, because they are so pretty to look at and at the same time so delicious to eat. If you want noj sweets, they have some pate chauds as well. Service: At the busiest times of the day, they still manage to keep their cool and be so nice to all the customers. Usually I don't expect this from a vietnamese place (I'm viet as well) but this earns them extra points because it's refreshing compared to otherr viet places in the area. Environment/Location: The location is on a busy street but the parking is pretty big so it's still pretty good to go to. This place saved me several times for potluck events where I am assigned dessert and I forget to order them earlier on. Overall: 3.5/5 I would still prefer Korean style bakeries, but for what it is, the Van's Bakery is one of the better vietnamese bakeries in the OC area. read more

I told her strawberry favorite cake with strawberries fruit filling at the middle. She wrote it down vanilla cake. I asked her why you put down vanilla when I told you is strawberry. Very cute and well organized bakery! I initially came here to buy their banh bao's (steam buns) whenever I looked that them, they looked old. Very sorry looking! I bought 1 to try before purchasing a ton! I'm happy I didn't buy them in bulk because they were not as good as expected. I also bought some Chinese sausage which has no msg. Today I was yawning after lunch due to either too much walking at costco or I'm just not awake yet. Since I was in the area with my mom grocery shopping I thought I tried out van's Vietnamese coffee. Coffee here was ok, it was too sweet and super bitter for some reason with either too much condensed milk or sugar. I have drink bitter Vietnamese coffee before and I had no problem. But this one was not that good. It cost $2.50 and I barely drink any of it. I still have 75% of the coffee left after I got home. So yea there goes my $2.50 of coffee. read more

I'm solely reviewing the tiramisu and the pandan flan I tried here which is why I give it two stars. I've simply had better. Now, I'm a lover of tiramisu and it's hard for me not to like it. But here.. eh. I couldn't even finish it so that's a bad sign. I mean it wasn't horrible but you know how when you accidentally leave your chips out and they get stale? The tiramisu basically tasted like that, almost to the point where I could have mistaken the cream for styrofoam or something. It lacked creaminess and the flavor was just alright. As for the pandan flan, that was quite interesting for the fact that I've never seen pandan flan before and did taste interesting too. Pretty good but nothing amazing. I personally don't ever trust Viet bakeries and their renditions of non-Viet (French, American, etc) cakes since they're always lacking and well.. plain out crappy to put it bluntly. So I'm not surprised that the Tiramisu was eh. They do have a large selection of cakes though and what I found intriguing was their gelatin and flan "cakes". I have been to Van's Bakery many times over the past 7 years for fast food and personal sized bakery items. The old ladies up front are always kind and always in stock with what I need. Service is quick, I never had to wait long. Fast forward to several years and its time for us to select a wedding cake! We were referred to Van's from our reception venue who included the cake in our package. I have heard their wedding cakes were delicious and I really like that they use the Asian style light whipped cream instead of heavy butter cream. The young woman that helped us in the back was very sweet and made the cake flavor and design selection so easy. Their cake album has tons of pictures for designs and I felt bad since we were probably there for almost an hour, but she made sure we were comfortable with our selection. Since they have lots of experience you are also welcome to show then photos/pinterest of cakes that you like and if they can pull it off its not an extra charge. That day we walked out with their famous pandan cake with coconut cream (its a winner if you haven't tried it yet) its the best in Westminster. She even texted me later that week to follow up on a few changes I wanted. On my wedding day my guests loved it. This is by far the neatest and most clean Vans bakery I have been too. I decided to drop by since I was in cococane. I got the small slice of the coconut pandan cake for my boyfriend and I to share and it was quite tasteful and light. The pricing is very cheap but reasonable. I came here with the boyfriend for a mid day snack after he got his haircut at a place down the street. This place is your standard Vietnamese bakery with a convenience shop next to it. Kind of strange in my opinion but it was fun looking at the stuff while we waited for service. They sold a lot of different stuff like candy, drinks, and some other preserved dried food. Anyways, the service sucked. It took forever for them to take our order and it wasn't like there wasn't that many people working. It just took awhile for them to notice us and take our order which was just 2 fruit tarts. 1 with flan and 1 without. The fruit tarts were just okay to me. There was something off with the crust of the tart. Kind of soggy in a bad way. But the flan was pretty tasty which was nice. I don't think I'll be back. There are so many other bakeries out there. The la dua(pandan) coconut cake here is so good. The cakes here are so fluffy, moist, and delicious. If you're looking for a good cake that isn't overly sweet, this is the place to go to. The durian and mocha cakes are also really good. The only reason why I'm not giving this place five stars is because one time I bought a durian cake slice here and parts of the frosting had a slight spoiled milk/cream taste. My mom gets cake for me all the time from Van's bakery and this has only happened once so it's not too big of a deal to me. After a bowl of pho, what do I want? A waffle from Van's! The first time I came here was with my boyfriend and his niece. We were picking up a fruit tart for his mom's birthday. And while in there, he got a waffle for his niece. And he made me try it. Surprisingly, I liked it. I'm not a big coconut fan and plus the waffle is green, so it's kind of weird looking. The past couple of times, we came in they didn't have the fresh waffles, they were already in the plastic wrappers, but last week we came in and they were making fresh ones! So we got one that was right off the iron. Usually, when we asked for fresh ones, they told us it would take about 10 mins, and I didn't want to wait that long. We've gotten cakes here too, which aren't that bad. They are the typical Asian bakery cakes, light and fluffy. I will advise, the durion cake is not very good. Had a Taro Macaron & a slice of Durian Coconut cake. Both were good, in fact I think that this may actually be the best macaron I have ever had. The filling was so rich and moist. I regret I didn't get every flavor. Now to the Durian cake, it was really moist and the frosting was really tasty. I look forward to going back and trying everything. read more

If ya need something sweet, this place is perfect. If you want, your teeth to fall out, this place is perfect. They got cakes, candies, dried fruit, slushies, ice cream, deep fried sweet crackers, tarts, fruit cakes... everything asian inspired under the sun. I've tried almost all of their slushies, bobas, w/e flavored ice drinks with syrup. They are honestly way too sweet. From taro to red bean, they just add too much syrup. For the pastries and tarts, a couple of them are way too pricey for a mere 2 bites of unwanted, regretful calories. The place is kind of dirty as well. When me and my girl came in, she was mesmerized by all the colors and the pretty asian pastries that were posted up. I was being disgusted by the floor and the dust accumulated on products that weren't touched under the tables. Plus, there's a side of the bakery where it looks unfinished. A side that looked forgotten, but it's filled with eye appealing things like wedding cakes and cookies, people just don't realized there standing next to a stack of newspaper and a metal ladder. The staff... thank lord one of them new English or else we wouldn't have ever left with our already melted, overpriced coconut sorbet. She didn't even know they accepted cards, but I'll let that one slide because maybe she was new. I used to come here a lot with my mother, buying things impulsively, but it takes years of aging and realization to see things for what they truly are and this place was plane ugly to me now.
