Went to Vaquero Mexican grill today. They have changed the menu and raised prices and give less. Shrinkflation! The potato tacos were 3 now 2. No salsa unless you pay for it and no chips unless you pay for them. Used to come with lettuce tomatoes cheese and sour cream. Not anymore. Every other restaurant gives at least a small chips and salsa with purchase of a combo meal. I got none. I had to buy the salsa for my tacos. The quality is lacking. The service was lousy. The lady was rude. I have been going here for over 10yrs. I will never be going back. Overpriced, small quantity, bad quality. Save your money. There are literally so many places to go within walking distance that are so much better and better value than here. Don't recommend it at all! read more

I've been coming to this place for lunch for almost 20 years. A lot has changed, including ownership, the name (it was called El Norteno Tacos before), and obviously the price of a 3-taco special (for about ten years, it only cost $6.80). What appeals to me is what hasn't changed. The same lady hand-presses the corn tortilla remains there, who always gives me a smile when I looked at her. The horchata is just as sweet and rich (although it is a bit too sweet for my taste), and most importantly, the quality of the meat. I am glad that their menu hasn't changed much. It's one of the few places in Southern California where you can order a cabeza taco. Lengua is rare enough, but I can't think of another taco joint where you can count on them having cabeza. The caldo de res is to die for, and even though I am still alive, my opportunity to eat there is slim. After working at the Kaiser Permanente Normandie North building since 2004, I finished my last urgent care shift today. I intentionally walked there for lunch, savoring not just the tacos, but the fond memories of all these years of taco-eating. It's the end of an era as I transition to aviation for my second career. I usually come here for the posole which is delicious but I prefer the garden location . Recently I went in and preferred a protein bowl. El Pastor Taco was excellent per my son. Asado was too greasy for me and there's a lot of sauce to it. The half chicken meal with rice was good! Located close to Kaiser PCH. We just happened to pass-by the area yesterday before we go to the cemetery. Health issue, they have B rating when we came. But, like any restaurants, there's always room for improvement and for sure they learned from the violation and probably working on it. For sure it's a minor offense. So we went over and asked what are some popular dishes or recommended us since it's our first time being there... the lady at the counter may have been having a bad day or perhaps she's just like that. She was monotone, seemed bored, and it was just a "what do you want" kind of attitude. I felt like I couldn't ask her any questions. Asada was cooked right, ingredients were also tasty. However, the sope itself was undercooked, it tasted like masa all the way. 3. Al pastor taco: no issues, very good. 4. California burrito: my poor husband got the worse of the night. Chicken was old and overcooked, not a bad flavor but way too dry. We were in the mood for some tacos with homemade tortillas. This place was recommended to us by a friend. Since we had not eaten here before, we only ordered two tacos each. We had ordered two tripas, a carne asada and Chorizo taco. The tacos came with onions, cilantro and chili verde. They gave us some pickled carrots and red and green chili. The meat was cooked just right. The tripas were not steamed or under cooked and not cooked too crispy. I do like my tripas to have a little crunch. The tortillas were definitely homemade and were fresh. One of the of the reasons I would return back. Even though the place received an A, the floor was pretty dirty and we had to clean our own table. The cashier was not too friendly, but probably because I don't speak Spanish. Give it a try. The dairy one was not followed and when I tried calling it won't go through because "voicemail box is full". Its just concerning that something like an allergy note isn't followed and I can't communicate with them to let them know. The food overall is okay its not bad, but I think for Mexican food it is not the best. The flavoring is not fully there, but like I said its passing. Its not terrible. We stumbled upon Vaquero on our visit to the Palos Verdes. We took a turn to this mall after exiting the freeway to check our directions. We were getting hungry and watched customers come in and out of the place so we decided to give it a try. I ordered the shrimp tacos and was pleasantly surprised of the style it was cooked (with peppers, tomatoes and onions). This was new to me and I really liked it. Occasionally, I crave THAT beef soup but don't wanna drive to Long Beach. I've tried beef soup at several places in my area but nothing came close to the one I had in Long Beach. The meat should easily pull apart like it does here. Tomatoes, potatoes or yuca, and my favorite, chayote, happily swimming harmoniously with tender pieces of beef. I've been across the street at Kaiser all day without food. I was starving and was craving a pippin hot caldo de res in this chilly whether. The caldo de res is beyond disappointing. I'm sad about my mom being sick and this caldo made me even sadder. It was bland, had a bunch of chayote, no corn, no cabbage, and no cilantro cooked in the broth. We've been here too many times just for their chilaquiles with no meat and red sauce. The chilaquiles is made with their homemade tortillas, sour cream, eggs and their bomb red salsa. Their salsa is so good we just take a tub home to eat with our tortilla chips. It's usually served with rice and beans. We are probably ordering chilaquiles to go at least once a month. They can fry and egg on top, make it overeasy or mix it in with everything if you like. Make sure to get it on the morning as they serve it with the freshly made tortillas. Today this place could have got me really sick. I ordered 3 shredded beef tacos. Good thing I checked receipt because it said carnitas. When I brought it to the clerks attention she says d yeah but we have to put the meat in it's Spanish name. Isn't carnitas pork, I asked, she said yes and I said I wanted machaca. I can't eat pork I said. She said ok I told the cook to change it. Thank Food comes and it's carnitas which I showed her and she still can't articulate beef to the cook. My GO TO SPOT on my lunch for work i have tried the caldo de rez, sopes, tacos suaves, tortas, and quesadillas and they are all 10/10!!!! They are so generous with the ingredients, especially the meat!! The carne Asada is SOOO good, I always ask for both green AND red salsa and they never charge me extra I've seen some not so good reviews on here and I honestly believe they just came on a bad day... I would recommend giving them a second chance! The prices are very decent for the portions and the taste.
