I'm a little late with this review, I had called to make an appointment for highlights and while on that call I asked for their color specialist. They told me the Natasha was their senior color specialist and would be able to help me with my highlights. Let me start out with that for the price they are charging they should do much better. I previously had my hair done by an Aveda Salon in LA, so I had asked my old hairstylist for the formula that she used. When I went to Natasha I came prepared with pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like, which were pictures of me and with the formula in hand. I even emphasized that I wanted them to look natural. She not only made the highlights look so contrast but they were yellow and I had bleach spots, which I found when I got home. The highlights looked as if they were grown out for a month and when she was washing my hair she rubbed on the area where there was a bleach orange spot that she created. My issues here is that they placed me with "Senior Color Specialist" yet how could someone do yellow highlights and leave you with orange spots. I called the next day and they offered to correct, although Nina made a effort to correct what was done I would not recommend coming here to get your hair highlighted UPDATE REVIEW I was promptly contacted by the salon owners after posting my review and offered to have my hair done again to my satisfaction. I initially booked an appointment for partial highlights with a blow-dry at $175. Upon arrival, I was informed that the price does not include toner, which is shocking--how can a salon of this level offer highlights without toner? It's practically a necessity, not an add-on. Adding toner cost me an extra $40, and then I was told that the blow-dry was no longer included either--it was now an additional charge. In the end, I paid $193 without a blow-dry and walked out with hair that looked almost the same as when I came in. The results were disappointing and not worth the money. If you're considering this salon, be aware: toner is NOT included in highlights, and it costs $40 extra. The lack of transparency and the underwhelming results make this a 0/10 experience for me. Got a couples massage recently and we left pretty satisfied. We were placed in two rooms that were open in the middle. My husband really enjoyed his massage. Mine was good in the beginning, but towards the middle/end, I felt like she was walking around adjusting towels more than actually massaging me. We hope to return soon to get another massage. Tip: be careful with the single use bathrooms. I knocked and walked into a man doing his business because he didn't lock the door. :( read more

My kids gave me a gift certificate to Varuna for my birthday and honestly, I was a little concerned that the money they spent would be worthwhile since I don't tend to like big corporate salons. I gravitate toward small, local boutique spas. However, I had a very good experience with massage on my first visit. Susan gave me much needed relief from a painful neck condition I've been in treatment for since last fall. She helped relieve the pain and gave me an overall wonderful, healing massage, using a combination of techniques. She was professional and easy to communicate with. I felt that this was truly a collaborative experience, which is rare with massage. Usually you're at someone's mercy on a table and most have a rote routine they perform in a specified amount of time, so like 5 minutes on this body part and moving on, whether it's accomplished anything or not. In contrast, Susan was very flexible in her approach and asked several times for my input and checked to see that I was comfortable with what she was doing. I left feeling rejuvenated and restored. I'm calling today to book my second appointment after working with my physical therapist yesterday, who told me my muscles and tendons were much less tight and flexibility improved since he'd seen me last week. 0 for 2. The first time I got a haircut and the only request was that I be able to put it in a ponytail so I could run. Nope, couldn't manage that. Next time I came for a massage. The Chakra massage needs to be renamed to meditation. Not only did it start late, it finished early and more than 50% of the time is for you to meditate on your own. Seriously this is a $110 "massage." The only redeeming factor is the products. No discount to return is worth the continued disappointment. read more

Cupping Massage with Nicole Jack- I arrived tense and in pain, not knowing I was about to experience easily one of the best massages I've ever had. Massages are a regular part of my self-care routine, so I've had many. Nicole's calming presence immediately prepared me for relaxation and helped me forget about the minor stresses of the day. She quickly identified problem areas and focused on them with care. Even though the massage was just 60 minutes, I didn't feel rushed. Also, the cups were flexible silicone and not glass, so that felt great. I walked out of there feeling like a new person and will return! Jeffery was the person who gave me my facial and foot rub and I have to say he was incredible! He is very talented and gave me the experience I was hoping for! He listened to my concerns and addressed every question I had. He made me feel very comfortable and I totally enjoyed the hour long session I had with him! Do not try to use your GPS to get here. Instead just look on your map. Park Place/Westin is at the traffic circle with Spa Rd, West St and Taylor. Drive in and you'll see Varuna Aveda Salon right there. Try to park on the street of they have a garage. Never drove in here, really nice. Didn't even realize this was an Aveda Salon. They're all about going green and using natural products. Got this massage for a present and am so grateful. Nicest Aveda salon I've ever seen. Warm neck pillows upon arriving and the hair salon is pretty big. I went in for the Chakra Balancing Massage. $100 for 60 min is pricey. Natalie was awesome and I wanted to stay longer but for the price and with this whole gov't shutdown mess, I shouldn't be spending any more money. My friend is the queen of chakra balancing but Natalie was a good second. I like the pre-massage foot soak idea but don't care too much for Aveda's water in a bowl idea. I feel bad for the people who have to kneel on the ground in this awkward position. I got the better end of the deal for sure. Best part about Varuna? I really would like to rate Varuna with a 3.5 stars. I booked two body wraps approximately a month ago for my daughter and I. At time of booking I booked for two people with the two different wraps.I received about 3 texts, one up unto 30 minutes prior to the appointment. The first two texts, I confirmed for TWO people, because only my name was listed. The front desk or their software need to be updated on how all of this is handled. Even when we checked in person, there was minor confusion as to one or two appts. The two massage therapists called us both by the same name because it was all under one person! My daughter booked the Rosemary Mint body wrap: Renew body and mind with this stimulating and nurturing dry wrap. Your body is exfoliated, smoothed, softened and wrapped while you are on a warm water-filled cushion. Essence of rosemary and peppermint will awaken your senses while a scalp and foot massage balance your body. While she loved the entire experience,she was not on the warm water-filled cushion and no foot massage. I booked the Beautifying Wrap: The Beautifying Body Wrap is a warming, detoxifying seaweed body wrap featuring the aroma of Aveda's Beautifying body care products. The treatment includes a dry exfoliation, seaweed masque, scalp and face massage and foot reflexology. While I loved the entire experience, I specifically chose it due to the foot reflexology. I did not get that at all, nor the face massage. I did not choose the Rosemary Mint due to the water filled cushion in the description, though I wanted the Rosemary Mint fragrance. So basically, we received the same exact thing minus the different fragrances. We may be back another time but this time know the deal although I really wanted my foot reflexology! read more

I came into have my roots done & a tone for my platinum hair. My stylist didn't seem to have any idea of how to work with my platinum hair so asked another stylist for a second opinion. The second stylist came over and began giving my stylist instructions without having spoken one word to me in terms of what my desired outcome was. Before I could get a word in, the second stylist left. I found this to be one of the most unprofessional things i've ever experienced in a salon. I Left with bright orange roots and a flat blowout that was still wet at the roots...makes me wonder what the stylist was doing while I was sitting in the chair for multiple hours. I had been a client on and off since 2012, and upon speaking with the manager the day after, no apology or resolution was proposed, other than booking another appointment (um no thanks). In all my appointments here over the years I've never really had a great experience and my hair has left looking mediocre at best. Done with this place forever. read more

This is THE PLACE to get the best women's cut and style in Annapolis! I've tried other salons of equal caliber, like Hudson & Fouquet down the street, but for some reason, I always get a better haircut and service at Varuna Salon & Spa. Highly recommended for wavy and straight hair, as they advocate gentle and natural Aveda products. Liz and Amanda have always done a great job with my hair. I make sure to bring two style options, and discuss with my stylists the best choice for my face and lifestyle. Normally, they sway me into keeping my hair long(er), which gives me the confidence that these stylists are reasonably focused on what will fit you and will be easier to maintain in the long term. They are not just the "cutting" type...I mean, we've all met those stylists... You know, they sport the iconic Kate+8 platinum-streaked mullet, and they take their personal hair frustrations on those of us with conservative hairstyles or long hair. They come at you with their shears and just start chopping away, as your 2" trim turns into Halle Berry's pixie nightmare. Whew, I'm getting carried away! I was looking at trying a new salon so decided to try this place out since it was recommended to me. Unfortunately I got the worst hair cut of my life. The entire experience was awful since the moment I opened the door. 1) the door had oil all over it so I had to wash my hands off in order to take off my coat to hand it over to the front desk staff. 2) the waiting area was so close to the front desk that I heard all of their personal conversations 3) I was supposed to get a haircut with Natasha but instead I got Antonella. I was annoyed, but she seemed super nice so figured why not...figuring all the stylists were pretty good. 4) I have a pretty easy cut...my hair is long so I just asked for a trim with layers. What I got was a trim with angling at the side...that's it. No gorgeous layers throughout my entire head. Also, the cut itself took maybe 12 min. It looked fine when she was done from what I could see in the dark lighting they had. Once I got home to better lighting I noticed my hair wasn't cut even. I actually had to trim pieces myself because it was so bad. I was in tears, I couldn't believe it. This wasn't even the worst part about it. I wanted to get my hair fixed but in no way wanted to go back here, so booked an appointment for my normal stylist. She had to do a dry cut to see what she needed to fix...wellll, let's just say that there is a huge chunk of hair in the back of my head that cut wayyyyy to short. She thinks that she may have been trying to layer but messed up and tried to fix around it. Bottom line, never ever will I come back here again. read more

I went to go get a second balayage and when i asked to show a photo of what i wanted the lady responded with " i don't need a photo i know what to do " i then proceeded to tell her i do not like orange and caramel tones in my hair and no money pieces in the front. Also I like how their products are all natural, which is easier for all hair types. I went here for a haircut, highlights, and a blowout. I love Aveda haircolor and products, and have gone to many Aveda salons around the country. This is my favorite so far. The color was probably the best I've had. My stylist, Joann was very helpful and gave me some advice on changes I could make to the color to get the look I was wanting. My cut was very well done too. The space itself was nice, relaxing, had very comfortable chairs, and as usual, I was offered a cup of Aveda tea. Expensive, yes, but the Aveda hair color is so superior to anything else, and overall, it was a great experience. I would certainly recommend Joanne. (P.S.: Written by my wife.) read more

I have been visiting this salon for over 5 years and I love it so much I commute 30 minutes to an hour for their services. I see Amanda for all my hair needs, and she does a great job with haircuts. She is very intuitive on what styles and products will look good on me and what won't. I don't let anyone else touch my hair. The spa is great as well, and what my Mom refers to as "her happy place". It's like another world of calm. I haven't been in a while, but I used to go regularly for facials and massages from Samantha. She is incredibly talented with skin- she knows the breakdown of all the Aveda products and how they affect different skin types. During the time I saw her, she healed a particular bout of acne I was suffering from. Those services were worth every cent. Very happy customer, only wish I could go more often. read more

However, the waiting area was very tight, and dark, and my facial - I felt as though I could have done a mask at home and been just fine. Going to this salon is like going on a mini-vacation. It smells wonderful inside and the decor makes you feel so peaceful. As soon as I walked in, the lady at the front desk offered me tea, water, or a hot neck wrap! I definitely took the hot neck wrap. I had a cut and color with Heather and I will simply say that I have found my new go-to stylist. She really worked with me about what I was looking for and helped me figure it out before starting. She gave me exactly what I was hoping for and it looks gorgeous. The other staff members are great, too, including the management! They were asking me how I was doing while I was there and really cared about whether I was enjoying my time. I've honestly never had such a great experience at a salon!!! I went here with a friend to get a Brazilian bikini wax. It was my first time and needless to say I was pretty nervous. My sister has been to this spa several times and had recommended Donna. At first I was afraid that the whole experience was going to be uncomfortable and awkward but it wasn't at all! She made the experience very bearable and pleasant. This review is for the skin care part of Varuna. I LOVE this place. Totally love. I started coming here back in 2008 with a mild case of adult acne and uneven skin tone. I was booked with a wonderful girl named Samantha Saberon and she was absolutely amazing. She took the time to learn about my skin, my stressors, my facial regimen, everything. And then she went to town. I started with the Outer Peace 90-min facial and ohmigawd. Pure bliss. I've NEVER had an esthetician put me to sleep and keep me that way through steaming and extractions. She's good, and I'll venture to say that she's the best esthetician I've ever had. I went to her regularly ever three to four weeks. Started the process in mid-September and by end of November, my skin was clear and ready to go to the next level (evening out the tone and color). And throughout my pregnancy, there were times that she even extended my sessions, if she had no other clients right after me, just to help me relax a bit more and give me a longer head/shoulder/arm/leg/foot massage - all without charging me extra. Unfortunately, work and mommyhood have not given me the time to return to her on a regular basis- the last time I went was in September 2009 (and I honestly feel like a traitor for not having been able to go back after all the help she gave), but she's still there and I know that she still does good work, as I've recommended her to my coworkers and they, too, have nothing but great things to say about her. And I still follow her at-home Aveda skin care regimen - not one single breakout in two years. :) She's also a fabulous hair removal pro. Fast and tries to make it as painless as possible. Yes, Varuna can be a pricey, but seriously, I think it's worth the money, especially if you go the skin care route and get worked on by Sam. She makes the $150 facials well-worth it. After almost 2 years in the area I have finally found "my salon"! It was quite a pain to get there, so leave yourself extra time to find it, and anticipate parking in the garage at the hotel (it cost $5 to park there for 3 hours). I went it for another perm (yes, I know) and got JP. I'm so glad I did! She never complained once about it taking 2 hours to roll my hair, and she never left me to go eat lunch, etc. In the end, 3 hours later, my hair looks awesome, I had a good time chatting with JP and am overall happy. It was a little pricey, but I anticipated that since it is an Aveda salon - you get what you pay for! The salon is beautiful and I can't wait to go back to try their other services, and maybe hit up the cute food joints in the area! read more

Having not found my "salon" yet, I think this is the best bet. I was greeted happily at the door even after being 5 min late due to being lost and offered water or tea. I was given Hannah to cut my hair. She was sweet, kind and kept the convo going throughout the whole time. No awkward silences; unless that's what you're in to. She asked me what I was looking for and did a great job giving me what I imagined, nothing to difficult. She actually cut my bangs for me while my hair was dry, which I really appreciated bc too many people cut it while its wet and they end up too short. Afterwards, I was given my complimentary makeup touch up which made me feel pretty and off I went. As for price, the reason I went was due to a gift card and I chose Monday due to the special for 20% off new customers and so it was fairly inexpensive for me this time. I will definitely be going back regardless of price though, I was even given a card for 10% off color next time! More incentives! Yay! I also dig the products, nice smelling and doesn't feel like I have anything on/in my hair. read more

UPDATE: This review was originally a one-star review. I spoke with a manager, Lauren, who sincerely apologized for the experience I had last week. She said that this is not the normal standard they hold themselves to at Varuna and she would follow up with the stylists, and receptionist involved to make sure they're more transparent with guests. I appreciate having an opportunity to talk about my experience with Lauren and I am willing give Varuna another try. I am a long-time Aveda lover and this is the first time I've been disappointed by the Aveda salon experience. I booked my appointment with Jessica from home and paid in advance. The day of my appointment I got a call from the receptionist at 4:45 PM asking if I could come in 30 minutes later because the client ahead of me was taking longer than expected with her color. When I arrived at the salon at 6:25 PM, the receptionist greeted me with a pained look and said that Jessica had just started cutting the previous clients hair. She said it would be another 20 to 30 minutes before I could be seen. I said I would wait as this was the only time I could get my haircut. I waited in the back for another 20 minutes until a different stylist approached me and said that she would be cutting my hair instead. She did not introduce herself and as I approached her station there was hair all over the floor from a previous haircut. Not the clean environment I've come to expect from Aveda salons. As I later learned, Andi was my stylist. While my hair was being shampooed, she continually gossiped with another Aveda stylist about personal matters that I don't believe should be part of the customer experience. They even involved another client in the conversation too. This made me feel uncomfortable and was not the experience I wanted to have. At that point I was ready to request a refund and walk out. But I hadn't had my hair cut since October and it needed to happen. So I sucked it up. The haircut itself was great and I am happy with the results. Andi listened to what I wanted from the haircut and delivered. She was very efficient and skilled. I even got a few new styling tips in the process. What I am not happy with is the lack of customer service and my overall experience. When I make an appointment and book ahead of time, I expect that time to be honored. If Jessica wasn't done with the previous client in time, the staff should have had someone else lined up ready to take me so I didn't have to wait an additional 20 minutes, not counting arriving 30 minutes later as requested.
