I called ahead on Thursday night to make a reservation for Friday night, and the woman on the phone was very clear and polite. When we arrived (a little late), we had the option of sitting outside or at the one available table inside. Though it was 72 degF earlier in the day, it was getting breezy and chilly at this point, so we opted to eat inside. The place was packed, and unfortunately, there were a number of small kids in the tiny sound-reverberating dinging room. Once one of the tables left, it was much better, but the volume inside still made it very difficult to speak across the table. That aside, the food was delicious. I ordered the filet mignon kabob, and it did not disappoint. Served with rice, the beef was sandwiched between roasted tomatoes, green peppers, onions and mushrooms, and was topped with a brown brandy sauce. The meat was cooked accurately and was so tender that it cut almost effortlessly under my knife. It should be noted that it was a good sized portion, as well, and I ended up eating half and taking half home with me for dinner the next day. The waiter, albeit sometimes absent, was very polite and helpful. I'll definitely be going back, perhaps to try the gyro this time since it has gotten such good reviews. read more

This place is yummy and fun. The Greek Sampler is a fabulous start. The greek chicken, grilled with lemon is a delicious next step. While they offer take out, I'd stick around to eat. I got their parm chicken once to take home and it was just meh. But maybe there's just something about putting piping hot food into a styrofoam box that changes the flavor of food. It just ain't right. I understand that the owner of the restaurant was a waitress at Mike's Italian Restaurant (on Richmond Hwy. in So. Alexandria) for years and years. I find Vaso's Kitchen to be one of the better Greek restaurants in the Washington, DC area. I lived in Greece for three years so my concept of Greek food, especially gyro platters, is not a mound of lettuce, tomato and tzatziki smothering a generous portion of doner on some pita surrounded by a family serving side of French fries. Vaso's does a good gyro. Presented nicely and quite manageable to consume. Although lettuce is usually not an ingredient in gyros in Greece (too hot and dry), I let them off the hook on this one as it can easily be picked up and eaten properly like they do with gyros in Greece. Other menu highlights include their saganaki, a fried unpasteurized sheep's milk cheese served on a sizzling platter. In addition their horiatiki (village salad) is also very good and mostly authentic. Authentic horiatiki does not come with lettuce, which is the case here, but I'm not so sure about the pepperoncinis. Beyond those dishes and a one time ordering of calamari (really kalamarakia) I have chosen not to deviate too much into the menu as I go there for the simpler foods that remind me of the times I spent in Greece. Sure they have a burger on the menu and BBQ pulled pork to honor their namesake building, a former Dixie Pig, but I would imagine they put the same attention to detail into these dishes as they do some of the Greek entrées. I might also add that they have a number of spaghetti dishes, where not really authentic Greek food, spaghetti is very common to find in all of Greece. Service can be sketchy at times, but they do fill your beverage glasses and that is a major tipping point in my book. Food can take a few minutes, but I'd rather they get it right than fast. Finally,...location. As it is off the beaten track in north Old Town, there is plenty of off street parking to accompany their private parking lot. Perfect for older less mobile folks like my parents who occasionally come to visit and insist on dining here because of the food and parking convenience. read more

Man, this place is AWESOME! So, I came here on a Thursday night. Actually, I wasn't too hungry, so I just ordered the Linguini Alfredo Appetizer. Thought that it would be small and that I would save a little bit of Money as well. Then I got creative. I had a taste for some Grilled Chicken and a few Veggies. I asked them to add those ingredients. By the time the tally came up, it was like $17 bucks. Heck, I should have just ordered the daggone Dinner sized Pasta (which includes similar items), and would have been more food. LOL. Ok, but I wasn't hungry anyway, so outside of the price for what I conceived, the dish was EXCELLENT!!!! I am a PASTA LOVER (and a cook in my own right). When I tell you that this was one of the BEST Pasta Dishes that I have had in a very long time, trust and believe that I is! I was literally scraping the plate at the end. I used to live five blocks from here and would visit about two-three times a month. The food is pretty good and fairly authentic. If you come here often enough you'll meet the owner/chef who comes out to banter with the patrons. She's very nice and has even given me free food. Most of the dishes are good enough, there's nothing bad here. The best part is they serve great Greek beers you can't find anywhere else. I've never has issues with service, the staff is very quick to seat you and take your order. I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes for my food, usually it takes less than that. As others have said this place gets busy during supper time so either come early (before 5pm) or later (after 8:30pm). I usually come for lunch and it's not too crowded. Though if you come right at 12pm you may have a problem finding a seat. This is definitely with a try if you've never been here. read more

Very tasty. A bit more expensive than what I was planning on, though. We got the chicken shawarma sandwich wrap and the appetizer platter. It was crowded on a Friday night. The place is small, but nice. You could be comfortable in casual or nicer clothes, I think. There are actual tablecloths and cloth napkins. Friendly service, if somewhat hurried. You can sit outside on nice days/evenings. They have a small bar, right inisde of the dining area (which is pretty small). I would be happy if someone took me on a date here (hint hint). The only thing is that I didn't feel like we could eat at a leisurely pace and talk, something I really like to do (and compensate the server for with a tip). Yum! We brought our new puppy to Vaso's last weekend and sat outside. The waiter brought out a bowl of ice water for our pup which was just so sweet. We had the cheese ravioli, and the gyro platter. The bread was very good. We also had the baklava which was very very yummy. Can't complain there. For dinner for 2- we ended up at around $50 but it was a great evening and they treated our puppy so sweetly. We'll definitely be back! read more

My veg fiance normally doesn't go for Eggplant Parm, but it was that or pasta with Marinara sauce. He was pleasantly surprised by the eggplant parm. Packed! The host immediately asked if we had reservations. Nope. We opted to wait outside since there was no space left at the bar. It took less than 20 minutes for a table to open up, so his estimate was pretty accurate. After waiting outside, man! We wish we had made reservations for a spot outside - it was crazy loud inside. Had we been part of a group, sure, but shouting to each other was rough. Fortunately the food was delicious and kept us occupied. The sampler appetizer was delicious - it had a bit of everything. Since there were only two of us, after finishing that we each ate only half of our entrees so we could take 'em home. I liked the Chicken Kebabs, just wish the rice was less salty - it was seasoned as opposed to plain. Only critique I have is the bread - it didn't impress. It was warm but seemed like a frozen loaf you'd get from Pepperidge Farm. Why not serve some pita to dip in the olive oil? Save calories for the other stuff! read more

This is our second time visiting these small gem out of nowhere and they remembered us and happy to give our two beagles fresh clean water. It was a very nice sunny and windy afternoon and so was our lunch. the friendliness of the staff attending us were outstanding, fast, and relaxing. their faces light up every time they talk to us, venera was especially friendly, fast and accommodating at the same time professional. That being said, we already know we are in good hands when it comes to food. I would like to be selfish and not write this review because we want this restaurant for ourselves but I guess we have to share it to the world. I enjoyed the fresh tasting calamari and my favorite chicken kabob and the sauce was just right for my taste bud. It is just a joy eating there with family and loved ones. Neighborhood gem! Vaso's had caught my eye because of their Dixie Pig sign since I had moved here. It wasn't until a coworker told me that his family owned it that I decided to go. I wasted time in not going because it is fantastic. The inside reminds me of stepping into a family run business that is in a small town...and that is exactly what it is. Family owed and operated, Vaso's off Powhatan is a fresh change from the hustle of King Street or DC. I haven't been to their King Street location yet, but will soon. The food is so delicious. The prices may seem a bit high, but the portions are big. Fresh tastes. Fresh ingredients. Friendly staff. I have sat both at the bar for dinner and at a table. We came here for our anniversary, our first dinner out since lockdown began. We sat outside under the canopy of flowers, had the best cocktail, Quarantine, followed by delicious flounder, one with crabmeat, other with spinach and feta. Salad and dressing were excellent. If I actually went out to eat at lunchtime, it would be a much greater threat to my pocketbook as I think that their lunch prices are very reasonable so I'd certainly frequent it. I think the food is very good. I've had the trio of dips, the chicken souvlaki and a fish dish. All were good. The chicken souvlaki portion at lunchtime is VERY small--I was surprised at how little chicken you are given. The service is pretty friendly and the restaurant is fairly quaint--it's especially nice when the weather is warm enough to sit outside. read more

Went at Tuesday midday -- had great service and were allowed to linger for lunch. Loved it -- exactly what we expected. PROS: We had the spanakopita to start -- it was delicious. Creamy with lots of filling, phyllo with just the right amount of crispy -- and right out of the oven. Both meals came with very small salads that were fresh -- the salad dressing was simple and peppery and delicious. She had the special -- sea scallops and mushrooms in a marsala cream sauce. I tasted the sauce and it was out of this world. I had the eggplant parmesan (only drawback was the dearth of veggie options on the entree menu, but I expected it!) and it was delicious. We shared a cannoli for dessert and agreed it was one of the better meals we'd had in some time. The service was great and the staff were accommodating, attentive and friendly! My fiancé and I were visiting Alexandria for a weekend getaway and stumbled across Vaso's Kitchen for dinner when we looked at reviews online. We had the very best experience there!!! This family owned restaurant was such a pleasant surprise to our overall weekend experience. Penny and the rest of the staff were tremendously friendly, attentive and assisted me with with choosing the right wine that would pair with my delicious crab stuffed shrimp. Enjoyed a nice lunch last Friday afternoon with coworkers. Very quaint and simple restaurant upon first entering small courtyard to open the front door. Quickly seated in a fairly empty restaurant and greeted by our charming waiter. We started with the appetizers 'stuffed mushrooms with crabmeat' and the 'calamari'.Although both were small portions, they made up in flavor what they lacked in quantity. Particularly the mushrooms, they were amazing. Afterwards our dishes were quickly cleared for the house salads and bread before our entrees. Again, just enough to whet the appetite. Bonus points for actual soft warm table bread. As this was my first visit, I deferred to our waiter for an entree recommendation. I got the 'scampi and garlic ' and it was divine !! Easily the best meal I've ever had. The flavors were outstanding and so rich. Nicely portioned as well. Food arrived on time and service was top notch. As someone who works in service, I've come to dread eating out, especially table service. But the service here reminded me that there are waiters and waitresses who still are awesome. Never felt rushed, waters always filled, attentive, and just overall Genuine service! I will definitely return! I encourage everyone to check out this neighborhood gem! read more

The food is freshly made and well seasoned, not to mention at a very reasonable price considering Old Town is just South and prices spike right when you hit king street. The décor here is interesting in that while the outdoor area looks amazing with all the live plants (including many herbs) and the various vases and statutes but the interior is a little strange because it reminds me of a quaint little cabin in the woods or maybe something reminiscent of a Midwestern kitchen in the 1960's with flowers in the windows....I thought this was a Greek/Mediterranean restaurant? Parking is available in their own lot which is leaps and bounds better than Old Town. In conclusion, good food, good service, fair prices, and parking makes me recommend this restaurant to any hungry yelper. read more

Don't let the BBQ sign fool you! Hidden off the beaten path of old town is this great greek place with awesome pita sandwiches. I just dined here for the first time tonight- and it was amazing! For less than $16 bucks I had a great glass of greek wine and chicken souvlaki. The place is small and gets crowded very quickly, not ideal for conversation. I loved Vaso's!!! Saganaki was good and so was the chicken souvlaki. I ordered a stuffed fish entree and it was awesome. Everything was fresh! Some of the desserts are baked to order and based on availability so ask about them early on in the meal. I ordered the rice pudding for dessert and it was excellent. I want to give this place a 4 for the food, but have to cut a star for the service. We tried a variety of stuff - and everything from the hummus to the gyro to the lamb kapama to the flounder was quite tasty and decently sized portions. I also enjoyed two Greek beers I've never had before - Alfa, and Keo which put me straight on a beach mentally with my first sip. Their tiramisu was nice, and the yalatoboureko dessert (kinda filo dough stuffed with orange creme and drizzled with a sweet syrup) was yum too. My only downer was the service - our server kept making mistakes, bringing two things out wrong, and forgetting to get stuff for several minutes till we reminded him. Vaso's has been on my list of 'to trys' for some time now. I went during the late lunch hour to avoid the evening crowds. A friend and I both had the grilled chicken kabab, which came with a side salad and bread with olive oil for dipping -- both meals for $30 total. That's a pretty good deal if you ask me, especially in Old Town! The food was very impressive and far exceeded my expectations. I've gone to swankier places in Old Town, paid twice as much and the food was not nearly as good. The presentation was also very nice. I would definitely go back again! After a recent trip to Greece, I had some preconceived notions about what Greek spaghetti bolognese would taste like. I'd give my dish 2 stars. The fries and availability of Greek Mythos beer was excellent. My girlfriend loved her Gyro. We'll definitely return, but the bolognese isn't up to snuff. Bottom line up front: Staff was friendly, and service was just-in-time attentive (that's a good thing). Food was just ok, and I wouldn't have written a review except it's almost 5 hours later and I feel nauseous?? Admittedly this might be more a function of what we ordered: fried calamari & saganaki for starters, then I had the chicken pita and my wife had the flounder stuffed with spinach and feta. So my stomach could be complaining that I usually have a very low fat diet, and a gut bomb (for me) of fried cheese, fried squid topped off with a fatty pita...was a bit much. I didn't taste the fish, but my wife didn't finish it and remarked it tasted "awful"... The complementary bread and olive oil was excellent Calamari was...meh. How have I not reviewed this yet. I think I did a check in the other week and then totally spaced. We've been a few times and I love it. Total mom and pop type of place. Reminds me a little bit of the Greek diners I grew up with on Long Island, but classier. The menu has a lot of Greek and Italian choices. The gyro platter was to die for. The fried calamari very good. My friends swear by the Greek sampler platter and it does look incredible. The drinks are a little tiny and pricey, but otherwise I have no complaints whatsoever. Don't be fooled by the pig on top of the building. I think it's a historic building and they couldn't take the sign down. I almost don't want to give a good review to keep this place from getting too busy, but it is 5 stars in my eyes! read more
