I've been meaning to get her for a long time. A cute little restaurant tucked away in a north old town neighborhood with the icon Dixie Pig neon sign on the roof. The service was friendly and swift. An excellent Greek menu. I enjoyed the Chicken Marsala special. Tender cuts of chicken with mushrooms. So tasty. A side of pasta which was well prepared. No dessert. Have been here a few times before. Staff is great. Food is good too! I ordered the sampler. Loved it all, but the spicy feta is too spicy for me. I'll opt out of that the next time. My friend ordered the chicken souvlaki platter he really enjoyed it. We actually found a parking space in the back of the restaurant, a small miracle. If in the area, you can't go wrong with this restaurant. In the past, I've spoken to the owner and she's lovely. I assume she's still the owner, but I wouldn't know if the restaurant has turned over or not. If they have new owners, it's still a lovely place. Food was simple but well done. I think we had a newer staff member, service was a little off. Major gig was a chip in a beer glass that I almost cut my mouth on. They serve Greek beers and wine, solid selection. The gyro platter is more just gyro meat and a side of tzatziki. The spaghetti looked good. The menu says the Pinot Grigio is from Italy. It is Canyon Road, a cheap wine they sell at Walmart. I asked why the menu says it's from Italy and it's not, the manager said it costs $900 to change the menus and this has been their Pinot Grigio for years. When I asked them to remove it from my bill, he said no. I have been a patron for 20 years. I will never return. read more

I started with the bruschetta (delicious heavy garlic and delicious basil), then had the crab stuffed flounder which was delicately flavored but also so perfect. I finished with the Galaktoboureko. The staff is amazing. Friendly and very responsive. The food is delicious and consistent. My go to is the Village Salad!

First off, make sure you and your friends align on which Vaso to go to. There's one in old town Alexandria and we're not sure if they're the same ownership. Fortunately, they aren't too far from each other. That said, this Vaso was nice and quaint. There's outdoor seating if that's preferred. They weren't busy and were patient as our party of 4 sorted out the mishaps that had occurred. We never felt rushed. For food, we got a summer special to share and I got the flounder stuffed with spinach and feta. The watermelon salad was very refreshing! It had strawberries, chicken, and feta with a dressing on the side. The flounder was also tasty. Cooked well, and adequately stuffed! The only mediocre tasting thing we got was the complimentary bread basket which was not a big deal. Fast forward to the end of dinner was where the experience started going downhill. We had to leave and catch a show so we asked for separate checks as soon as we were about done eating. The waiter forgot, fine easy fix. Another waitress printed out the full receipt and then got intercepted by our waiter since he recalled we wanted it separated, cool. However, he was taking a long time and we were starting to run behind. I ended up going up to him after ~5 or so minutes to offer one card and we'd Venmo or whatnot after the fact. He was frantic, trying to separate the checks, and made it seem like he was nearly done and putting the check back together was going to be more work. I sat back down and we waited ~5 minutes watching him push the POS screen, print receipts, crumble receipts, and drop the plastic tray. Literally, it was a little painful to watch. When he got all the cards, he ran the 2/3 cards incorrectly. One card has the entire bill charged while the two other cards were also charged. It was a hot mess. Long story short, good food. Don't ask for separate checks. Don't go if you're on a time crunch. It was unfortunate that the experience ended poorly with everyone frustrated because it took over 20 minutes to sort out our check and ultimately made us late to the show. I do think Vaso's is worth trying out though!! Hopefully the tips above make for a more pleasant experiment for future patrons! read more

Just had the worst experience. I'm new to the area & came across this place looking for authentic "gyro". My 1st pick up order experience was sublime! And with that I opted to make this place a staple of my dining out. However, today after placing $32 order just for gyro platter, I arrived home with NO OITA. How can you eat gyro w/o oita. I called to inform them of my displeasure & that I'm too far to travel back for the pita & was offered a refund for the price of the pita. We don't drive by Vaso's Kitchen on Powatan often. But with their recent outside renovation, we noticed the restaurant and decided to check it out. The owners of Vaso's Kitchen also own Vaso's Mediterranean Bistro and Taverna Kretekou, both of which are on King Street in Old Town. The restaurant is nestled in a really nice neighborhood, east of US 1 and West of Washington Street. It is clearly part of this neighborhood as several of the patrons walked from their home to eat dinner here. The ambiance of Vaso's Kitchen is absolutely first rate. Their other restaurants feel like you're eating homestyle, but eating here you really feel like you're at home. The staff are wonderful, friendly and helpful. The entire experience was comfortably paced. Food is served reasonably promptly, but it is also relaxed. That's why it felt like home to me. There are several outside seating areas, one between the restaurant proper and the Powatan Street. The other area is on the side of the building under a tent. We chose to sit out front and it was much nicer in my opinion. There is a small but adequate selection of wines and beer. I chose the Greek beer which was a lager. It was light and flavorful, not too filling. My wife had the Pinot Noir that she enjoyed. This is a Greek restaurant in contrast to the Bistro. Bread is served with olive oil. The oil is great; the bread, not so much. We chose the Artichoke Florentina. It is a full artichoke served with a garlic paste and sitting in herb flavored olive oil. If you like artichoke, it is a very interesting presentation. We also ordered the Greek sampler. This was a nice variety of appetizers, some of which were really good-great pita bread, spreads, very good stuffed grape leaves, fresh tomatoes, nice spicy pepperoncini. There was a lamb ball (we first thought it was a felafel) that was disappointing. Our entree was the Branzini. It was truly delicious. At $42 the price was a bit high, but the fish was good. We also shared the Greek salad. Greek salads are not the most interesting dishes in the world, but this was a bit boring in my opinion. We didn't have coffee, tea or dessert so I can't comment on those. This is a great restaurant to come with family and friends. Remarkable. I don't typically go to Greek restaurants because I'm usually disappointed. I'm Greek. I am a good cook from a family of good cooks. We're Greek for God's sake. Vaso took care of my mother's funeral luncheon. I booked the entire restaurant. 50 plates of fresh bronzino came out of the kitchen so fast, we all truly ate together. The olive oil provided with the bread was the best I've had in a restaurant. The bread was fresh. The salad tasty with plenty of feta cheese. The ambience is high end and tasteful. I booked Vaso's for a family dinner never having been there before. It could have been a disaster......except it wasn't and got rave reviews all-around. We were a party of six including a high chair and everything (with one minor ding) was perfect from start to finish. I was able to order my toddlers food first-cheese ravioli-and it came out quickly, but WOW, 3 tiny raviolis and some sauce is not enough for any kid 10 and under. I had the soft shell crab special. It was nicely done and a fairly large portion. Others got the margarita chicken, the Greek sampler platter, and Athenian Chicken. Nice pours on the wine. Service was really friendly and consistent. If you blink you'd miss this place in a neighborhood just steps away from Old Town Alexandria. The food is delicious and the ingredients fresh. The menu is mostly Greek with some familiar Italian staples. The restaurant itself is a homey neighborhood place that was once a BBQ spot, with a small dining room & patio seating. Try the Vaso's Signature Shrimp with Artichoke Hearts or the baked artichoke appetizer. Both are really good. We don't go here often, which is our loss. I decided to give Vaso's Kitchen a try via uberEats. Food was tasty but maybe better to eat there or just do takeout as uberEats can take awhile with their multiple stops. My food was not as warm/hot as I would have wished- a bit on the soggy side. However, the dishes had lots of flavor, so I'd come back and just pick it up myself. I ordered the gyro sandwich for $10, chicken ala francese, which was just a lemony egg-wash breaded chicken over some thin spaghetti with a bit of red meat sauce for $21, and the dessert highlight was the galatoboureko $8- crispy/flaky phyllo dough stuffed with a creamy custard with some sort of honey-sugar sauce/drizzle. Wow this place has gone down the drain. My boyfriend and I have gone to Vaso's plenty of times before but last night was such a disappointment. We were seated upon arrival but no one came to check in on us for 15 min. After 15 min the busser came and poured us water (mind you my boyfriend's water had something floating in it) so they knew we were there but 5 mins passed and nothing. The waiters were standing behind the bar chatting and another couple who came in 10 min after us was already getting their order in. We debated on calling someone over to notice us but figured it's not our job to remind a waiter that customers have yet to be acknowledged. We decided to just up and leave and headed to another restaurant downtown. Will never go back. read more

I return for the flounder with capers. They know how to treat this delicate fillet with respect. Service is attentive but not rushed or clawing. And if it's a nice day eating outside Al fresco or under cover is surprisingly comfortable considering you are located on a busy street. The plants help soften the views and road noises. The zesty feta spread had a very small kick to it; I love spicy foods so this was a pleasant surprise. The Bifteki was very well seasoned and the charcoal flame gave it a nice finish. The gyro and chicken souvlaki were also well seasoned and the white meat chicken was very tender. This was a takeout order and the fries were still crispy when we got home! I really wanted to like Vaso's Kitchen, but it fell a little short of expectations. Vaso's Kitchen cuts corners, and that's part of the reason for a 3 star rating. There were two areas that they cut corners: the complimentary bread and salad. This is a greek restaurant, so bring out fresh pita bread with tzatziki sauce. Don't bring out regular Italian bread with the olive oil on the table. I want this to be a Greek experience. After my friend and I finished the bread, they never asked if we wanted anymore and nor brought over another bread basket. Not going to go out of business by providing some more bread. Bread doesn't cost that much. Dinner entrees come with a complimentary salad. The salad was a few pieces of lettuce with one cucumber, one grape tomato, and a little onion. That's weak. You could do better. For the main entree, my friend and I each got the Greek Platter with chicken. That saved the meal. pita bread was fresh and hot, tzatziki sauce was on point, and chicken was hot and flavorful. They did that main entree right. Service was lacking. Yes, the restaurant was busy, but it felt like the waiter didn't check up on us. My friend asked for a regular coke and apparently they just had diet coke. Since they provided a diet coke, I'm assuming there are no free refills here. That is lame. In addition, the soda was 50 cents more on the bill than what is listed on the menu according to my friend. I suppose this place had some charm as far as the atmosphere, since it is small with various pictures on the wall, feels slightly old school, and has a picture of a pig on the sign above the restaurant. Best Greek food this side of the river. Also serves some Italian staples that are good. I typically do take out, but the two times I've sat down, the service has been good and fast, but those were during non-peak hours. Has a wonderful, small outdoor patio. Their Greek salad is great with home made Greek dressing, the gyro sandwiches are piled high with fresh gyro meat, huge, fresh meatball subs, and their lamb was excellent too. It is a small family run restaurant with few staff, so I would be wary of going during peak times (as noted in other reviews). But overall, it's a local, family run, small restaurant that makes great tasting food. To the one reviewer complaining that they provided fresh bread and olive oil instead of pita and tzatziki; you realize that more people prefer the former than the latter, and that isn't a reason to knock stars off? Well, I received an email from the restaurant and it consisted of just the URL for an article on the CNN website that spoke about the difficulties restaurants are having these days during COVID. Well...I get it and understand that it is hard running and working at restaurant these days. However...here is my response to the restaurant... Sorry...doesn't cut it. I understand that restaurants are understaffed and overwhelmed but it is the restaurant's responsibility to be truthful with their customers. Be up front...tell them it is going to be a wait and another wait for their meal to be prepared. Let them decide if they want to stay or go. Offer then a 10% discount to come back during a weekday or slower period instead of waiting. DON'T take reservations if you can't fulfil them. If they stay, keep them informed...don't just leave them hanging. Offer them a free drink. Encourage them to chat away. In other words engage with your customer and most will understand. Your restaurant did none of these...and now you have a group of people who used to be loyal customers but now will probably never return. Sounds like a sound business model. NOT! read more
