One of my favorite places in all of Old Town! My husband and I love coming here - it is your typical neighborhood spot. The staff is so warm and friendly, and are attentive, even on a busy weekend night. The inside decor has been updated over the last year or so, and it gives off such a comfortable vibe when you are there. The food is consistently great. We have taken out of town family here, and they said they had one of the best gyros they ever tasted. The greek sampler is outstanding as well. When it finally came the food was quite good, but that's where "good" ends. Before the food arrived we sat for 90 minutes. Before that, we were sitting for 40 minutes when I alerted the server of our presence. Drinks didn't arrive until T plus an hour. The three "specialty cocktails" contained far more juice than alcohol. Throughout the ordeal our server made zero effort to explain or apologize. Indeed he seemed aggravated at me. Despite my best efforts, I could find no one of authority to help. One lady appeared late in the night and was clearly management or owner (she just as clearly missed the COVID training). She seemed preoccupied with 'regulars' and completely disinterested and unavailable to me. If ever I should have been comped for some or all of a meal this was it. Instead it resulted in $200 I'll never get back. Unless you're one of those regulars, stay away. read more

This little corner shop is quite lovely! I was walking by and decided to stop in, sadly I cannot recall some of the naming as my Italian isn't too strong! However! I had the flaming cheese appetizer that was wonderful, it had a nice hint of sweetness from the alcohol that was used and the lemon aftertaste of the rich and creamy cheese was really a great combination of flavors! Afterward I had a pepperoni pizza which had a phenomenal crust and an absolutely yummy red sauce. Definitely one of the best pizzas I've had in the area and unique in its own way! Lastly and again I apologize for not truly knowing the name I had a dessert that was like a fried thin pastry burrito with a cure inside and wow what a treat after the amazing meal! The outside decor is beautiful if you're dining outside as there are large flowering plants functioning as your reprieve from the hot sun. 2.5 stars. Went here tonight after looking for new neighborhood spots on yelp. The restaurant has so much potential and I really wanted to like it. It's cute and old school, but the service from the time you walk in the door to leaving is horrendous. Note to future diners- if you don't have a reservation you're not particularly welcome! We walked in the door, and there is no hostess stand or a sign to seat yourself. Shortly after, a waiter walked over and asked if we had reservations. We replied no and he rudely said "oh, well let me see if we can do something." He walked over to the bar and stood there, another server walked over and confirmed we had no reservation. We said no, and she said we could sit at one of the small tables near the kitchen. We then were seated and waited (no exaggeration) 25 minutes before the server took our order. We honestly were about to walk back out the door. After ordering we received a basket of average bread. Additionally we received our drinks, which just come in a can (and cost $3 for a single can). Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time. It was okay. I had the fettuccini Alfredo, and it was rather flavorless. My boyfriend had chicken Parmesan, he said it was average. Not bad not great. Our server never bothered to ask how our food was after it came out. Additionally, while dining I had a view of the kitchen- servers were putting bread into baskets without wearing gloves-gross! Our server eventually came back after it was clear we were done and dropped off checks. No thank you, no come back soon, nothing. For a small, neighborhood joint you would expect better service. We live close, and wanted a new spot. Unfortunately it did not measure up and I don't think we will be back. The larger Del Ray area has much better and friendlier places. read more

I think this place may be overpriced for what it is. For what it's worth, I ordered delivery, so maybe the food is better at the restaurant. My Chicken Margarita was not good. It was like badly seasoned cream on top of a chicken breast. The flounder was similarly unimpressive. Oddly enough, the best dishes were the least expensive ones. Why you may ask? Well because if his friendship is as amazing as his food, well then -- we're a match made in heaven. I went to Vaso's for a late lunch with my Dad. He ordered a lamb dish and I ordered the seafood pasta, which was their special for the day. It was SO GOOD. We also ordered and split the galatoboureko for dessert. It's large enough to split between two people, especially when you're stuffed from your entrees. The only thing that made this restaurant a four star experience rather than a five star, is the fact that the espresso was not good. That said - the food is fantastic. Vaso's is kind of a Greek-Italian-what-do-Americans-want-to-eat-from-that-region hybrid kind of place. As a dinner spot it's 3.5 stars. Portions are extra large...because they're trying to make up for quality with quantity. The Fillet of Flounder was unmemorable and the only option for cooked veggies was peas in tomato sauce. Definitely one of those "why yes I will have the peas instead of the pasta...and enjoy them since they're healthy. Oh wait, peas are just a plain, nasty vegetable regardless of what you do with them" kinda moments. Justin's pasta dish, the Vaso's Shrimp Pasta, was ordinary but with a good amount of shrimp and artichoke, two ingredients that are much too often skimped on in a dish. The Triple Dip appetizer was the one item that really stood out at dinnertime. All three, tzatziki, hummus, and zesty feta spread, were well executed and we were served both white and wheat pita. I've actually contemplated going back to eat this appetizer as my entire meal. It hasn't happened yet, but seeing as I live all of two blocks away, I can almost guarantee it will eventually. I've put off reviewing Vaso's for months because I felt I couldn't make an accurate assessment without trying one of their sandwiches, and I was entirely correct. The mediocre food at dinner time was blown away by the Chicken Souvlaki. The sauces were amazing and the use of minced fresh herbs added a degree of lightness that made the vast quantity of sauce-covered food I was eating not bog me down. There could have been more chicken in it, but the flavor still rocked my socks off. Seriously, I changed into flip flops. Reinvigorated after the souvlaki, and being in a time crunch, Brianna and I came here for a girl date. I opted for the Spaghetti Carbonara, which again fell into the good enough but not great category. But Justin makes the best carbonara I've ever had, so maybe I'm just a little spoiled. Brianna was smarter, also being a local and having been unimpressed with the dinner, and got one of the pita sandwiches. Pretty sure I just need to stick with the Triple Dip and the sandwiches from now on. One of the most appealing parts of Vaso's is the outdoor seating. Though it's on a moderately busy street corner, it's still a pretty area in a residential neighborhood with free street parking. Inside is small but adequate and they have a full bar. If you find yourself in Alexandria and you are looking for a place to eat off the beaten path - go here. It is a small place so it can get packed really quickly. I'm lucky enough that it is right down the street from me - makes me wonder what took me so long to get over here. I went here on a Saturday for lunch with a friend of mine who was in town. I got the Moussaka - one of my favorite dishes. This was a very good dish, though I've had more flavorful at other greek restaurants. What I will say is that the beschamel sauce was the best I've had though. It was very thick and the way they backed the top of it - mmmmm...makes me want to walk over there right now and eat. My friend got the lamb shank in red wine sauce. This was the winner between our two dishes. The lamb was of course cooked perfectly, but the red wine sauce added a depth of flavor that just made the dish sing. Both dishes came with salad and bread: Let me say - if you likecrusty, flaky bread warm from the oven then you'll like coming here. It reminded me of living in Europe and the bread man brinigng fresh bread to the house in the mornings.....slathered with a little (or a lot of butter), you might find yourself asking for another basket and not being able to finish your food! It quickly died down around 8pm. 0.5 SERVICE: Seated by a waiter bc there is no hostess. After being seated we waited about 15 mins before I had to catch a waiter going by to inform them we never got menus or a waitrer/waitress. Then, the guy who seated came over and took our order. Bad service. 2.0 FOOD: Food was NOT at all what I had hoped or read about. It was WAY over priced. The lamb was fried in grease and left under a food lamp for way too long as it had the greasy, translucent looking edges. The chicken was dry, lamb was dry... Everything was pretty... Bleh. Boring. 1.5 OVERALL: Nothing GREAT about this place. I had higher hopes. For the price, I will never go back. Pit BBQ and Greek food? "Ohh-Paaa, ya'll!" Yes, I was a bit skeptical after seeing the signs for this culinary anomaly in Alexandria. However, afterwards I was pleasantly surprised and ultimately sated. Vaso's is located in the old Dixie Pig BBQ house, hence my confusion. This is no nasty greasy spoon, and VK does serve some BBQ, but it's Greek food that the people come for. And it's pretty good. You can get your typical gyro platter. Or you can go out on a limb and get the baked fish, which was very nice. I ordered the pork chop dinner, which comes with a side salad and a generous helping of fries. The tiramisu was really stellar. The dining room is small, but for a Friday night the overly friendly staff had no trouble accommodating everyone. Would definitely eat here again. read more

Wow. My experience was nothing short of AMAZING! From the warm reception received by the staff, to the care and check-in that was provided to our table the entire night! I am very strict about my outings during this pandemic season and had heard about the safety dining protocols that were in place at Vaso's. Although its cold out, Vaso's offers outside covered seating, there are heaters so it's not too cold inside the tent. It's very open inside the tent as well. The service was great, Jiselle was very knowledgeable of the menu and offered a great wine pairing for our meal. The food was well prepared and very tasty. I had the vaso's shrimp and garlic. Vaso's is one of the best reasons for eating in Old Town. It actually seats more than 30 (53 I think), and will have outdoor seating soon. I love family owned restaurants or even businesses. It reminds me of the good old days when people are passionate about what they do. We had a party of 15, five did not show. They weren't hovering over us like some places would. They were very nice and just made us feel like we were at a friends place. Service was excellent. I ordered house wine...it was ok. I had calamari and greek salad. Calamari was ok. It was a little chewy for me but I think its on preference. Greek salad was delicious! Actual filets of anchovies so its definitely not for the weak of heart! it was a huge salad, their serving size are big. Oh we can't forget about the bread baskets! Warm break and butter yum!!! Now here comes my favorite! Turimisu! It wasn't frozen! J/k it was huge, fluffy, flavors blended nicely together! It tasted as if it was made at the restaurant that day! Patronized this restaurant twice, one sit down and one take out. Had variety of different items: calamari, pizza, gyro, salads, baklava and wine. The food was less than mediocre and the prices are a bit higher than moderate. I won't bother rating each one individually because that would be lengthy and unhelpful. The food can be easily summed up as either too wet (baklava), too dry (calamari), over cooked (lamb), and overall tasteless (pizza) or just without pizazz. My husband and I freaking love this place!! My hubby is not an adventurous eater so the fact that Vaso's can make both of us happy is amazing. For him, he loves the Chicken Parm with tomato sauce on the pasta (meat sauce, not so much), the Chicken a la Francaise and the simple Ravioli. I haven't had anything bad here yet. Couple stand-outs for me that I can't get anywhere else are the Greek Sampler and the Avgolemono. They make the most magical corned beef meatballs you will ever eat and the only dish they appear on is the Sampler. You can order them a la carte/off menu and I have done that with a bowl of their Avgolemono soup. The lemon chicken and rice soup is so satisfying in the winter. And their house-made Greek salad dressing, that I believe you can still buy for take-away, is awesome on anything. I do wish that they would bring back the bread that they used to serve untoasted many years ago now but that is the only thing I would want them to change. The prices are a bit on the high side but overall I feel like we always get consistent quality with the freshest ingredients and always leave full and happy. read more

Vaso's is right around the corner from my apartment, so I couldn't ask for more convenience. I love everything about it--the decor (inside and out), food and service. Right now it's decorated so nice for Christmas--just adorable and so cozy. Last night we shared a sampler appetizer platter--all delicious. I had the spaghetti carbonara--tons of bacon. It was amazing; generous portion so I brought some home. The side salad was nice and fresh with a good vinegar and oil dressing. The wines are priced fairly, too. We three enjoyed the Argentine Malbec. I will definitely be going back more often. read more

I came by Vaso's for a friends birthday dinner with a group of about 8-10 people. I was able to find street parking and we were promptly seated. The prices were a little on the high side but I was fresh out of college so maybe in reality it really wasn't that much. The space is cozy and the atmosphere was pretty warm. They gave us some bread that was very good. It had a nice crunch to it and was soft and warm on the inside. I ordered a chicken dish I can't remember the name of. Given the size of our group the food took just a little bit longer to come out but it was piping hot. Everyone really enjoyed there food and we all had a very nice, enjoyable time. read more

Disaster of a meal. Completely incompetent server with no knowledge of even basic restaurant etiquette. I was brought a dish I didn't order. Acknowledging it was his fault, he disappeared to get it sorted out. Didn't ask if he could bring me something to hold me over. Didn't see him again. My partner, in the meantime, had his meal and was eating. We eventually ran out of wine. The waiter was still MIA. I had to go to the bar to reorder. Maybe 20 minutes later, the waiter showed up with an over-cooked, inedible place of souvlaki - set it down and ran away again. Another 20 minutes later he shows up with a check. When I objected, he said he would comp my dinner and then said 'well, everything else was ok, right?' Seriously??? I asked the bartender who was in charge. He told me the waiter - who I think is the son of the owner. I left still hungry. The whole thing was a joke. I've had another problem at their King Street location which they sorted out after I sent a complaint letter, but this appears to be systemic with Vasos. Given the large number of dining choices in the Alexandria area, there is no reason to go to this place that is poorly run and inept. No excuse. read more

What a gem of a restaurant in the neighborhood! The service staff are always friendly, and prompt. The have nice seating outside or comfortable inside. Quiet place, usually no kids. Fresh baked bread, wonderful. Nice selection of wines, fresh brewed real iced tea. Meal selections are terrific from great seafood dishes to chicken to pastas to burgers. My only suggestion would be get fresh berries on your cheesecake... it's simple and improves the dessert by a factor of 10. Highly recommend for a quiet dinner, romantic meal, or just sitting outside with friends, some wine and the hummus platter!! And please, keep the kiddies at home! read more
