I had been wanting to come back here because we've been once and I remember their chicken tikka masala being really good. The first time, everything was mostly great and I probably would have rated 4 stars, but this most recent time the experience and food was average. To drink, I got the clarified chai cocktail and it was good, but it tasted more like a sweet/tart cocktail than a warm spiced chai I was expecting. For food, I ordered the same thing I got last time: chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, and aromatic rice. The chicken tikka masala was flavorful and creamy. Although, for the price ($25), I wish there was more chicken in it. There were only a few big chunks and some smaller ones. It does not come with rice either, which is another $4. It felt a bit overpriced for what you get. The garlic naan (forgot to get a photo) was really soft and delicious! It was definitely a comforting and satisfying meal overall, and I even had some leftovers to take home. I wish the waitress asked me about customizing the spice levels for our dishes. As someone who loves spicy, it's probably the reason why the chicken tikka masala wasn't as good as I remembered it since it wasn't spicy enough for me. The waitress we had last time asked us. The restaurant was not very crowded on a Saturday evening around 7:30pm. The service was good and the food was made quickly, so I didn't understand why our waitress kept apologizing and thanking us for our patience when we were never left waiting for anything. An elevated dining experience in a strip mall. Upscale atmosphere with a top notch antique drinks and food menu. Agree with the others that the prices are on the higher end but the experience is on the higher end too. Service was friendly and attentive. Besides that, maybe a little too attentive...we were there in a Sunday so it was a bit slow (might explain it). Overall would recommend but be prepared to spend $60 and up per person. We did come home with leftovers so not sure I would agree with the folks on the portion size complaints. read more

Malai soya chap was my favorite but take out portions are so small and taste was not great. Masala soya chap was similar case. Kohlapuri vegetables were not spicy as told by server. My Birthday Celebration in VATAN We recently visited Vatan for a birthday dinner and had a lovely experience. The restaurant doesn't take advance reservations, so it's first come, first serve, but thankfully there was enough space to sit comfortably without feeling crowded. The Indian Map with Vatan written on it looks impressive. The ambiance was pleasing. For drinks, I tried the pineapple drink, which was refreshing and light, a great start to the meal. The food menu had a wide variety, and we began with the dahi puchka shot, which was fun and flavorful. The kabab was cooked well, juicy, and seasoned just right.The Crockery used at the restaurant was good. Among the main dishes, the paneer was on the sweeter side, which some might enjoy, though I personally prefer it a bit spicier. The chicken tikka masala was delicious, rich in flavor, and definitely one of the highlights of the meal. Everything was served hot and in good portions, making it enjoyable to share among everyone at the table. Since it was a birthday, we also had a cake with us, and the staff was kind enough to let us cut it at the table. That small gesture made the evening feel even more special. Tucked just a little off the path in St Charles, my husband and I found a new locally owned restaurant @vatan.progressiveindian that's bursting with authentic Indian cuisine flavor! They just opened this week on July 2nd. What we ordered: Three-cheese Naan Lobster curry with a regular spice level, you can pick your level of heat Makhani Paneer Chicken Tikka Masala Mocktail Ordered: Exotica- crafted with orange, mint, and passion fruit The customer service was exceptional from start to finish with our meal. Four of us went to Vatan for Sunday lunch to try something new in town. It was delicious! We started with samosas, which were large (next time we'll split them so not to fill up before the main course). We didn't recognize many of the dishes, but followed descriptions to a moist and spicy "kebab" in the small plates (there were three servings and it could easily make a meal, but was great to share) and a savory-sweet paneer dish with spinach and tomato. Don't forget to order rice! Even the mild had a bit of heat, so we got Raina, which complemented everything, and garlic naan to wipe the plates of every bit of goodness. I will definitely be visiting avatan again. My husband and I dined here on a weeknight. The restaurant was moderately busy. No reservations. We do like spicy food. We ordered round of drinks, 2 appetizers and 3 entrees. I will say the prices are high but we enjoyed ourselves. I would do without the samosas next time. The tandoor shrimp stole the show. Butter chicken, PARDA BIRYANI and lobster curry were all outstanding. Garlic naan to top it off. The portions are small. The service was outstanding. read more

We recently dined at Vatan in St. Charles and left very disappointed -- mainly due to the extremely small protein portions. While some of the spice flavors were vibrant, the actual quantity of meat was shockingly minimal. The chicken entrée had only a few small strips of chicken, and the lamb dish came with just one small lamb shank. For the price point, the lack of protein felt disproportionate and misleading. If you're ordering lamb or chicken expecting a hearty portion, be aware -- the quantity is very limited. The papad and paneer appetizer was overly rich and not very balanced, and although the concept of house-infused liquors is creative, the cocktails themselves were underwhelming. We spent about $300 on two drinks, two appetizers, and three entrées (one vegetarian), and left feeling that the value simply did not match the portion sizes. Fellow diners should know that while the concept is appealing, the protein portions are notably sparse for the cost. read more

This is such special place. So authentic! Upscale but not intimidating. Very warm service. Perfect atmosphere. Modern and yet traditional. Comfortable seating and lots of it. Beetroot with cheese vegetarian dish with cashew sauce was incredibly delicious. The stuffed naan was beyond exotic and perfect. The lamb in onion sauce was plentiful and as hot as you would like it starting at a baseline of just the right heat and going up from there if you ask for it. The basmati rice had little aromatics in it and it was so gorgeous. The raita white sauce was above average quality as well. Astonishing cashew ice cream dessert. Perfect. read more

We love Indian food and are so happy to have found Vatan here in St. Charles. We wanted to try so many dishes and of course ended up over-ordering. We split a (small plate) Bhutta on Seekh, and it was so tasty that I think the next time we dine here, I'll have that as a main course. It is a great option for vegetarians. I had the Dal Vatan and the tandoori roti, couldn't finish it all, so brought it home so that I can enjoy it tomorrow for lunch. My husband had the Nalli Nihari (lamb shank), and it was delicious. I really appreciate the restaurant having a good sized small plates menu. Even so, I still ended up taking food home. Jeremiah was our waiter, and we appreciate his good service. Was so excited to see a new Indian place opening near us. We did take out and perhaps that is the issue. Certain food should not be available for take o it unless it's packaged properly. Samosas were very good maybe could have cooked another 30 seconds or so. Because we wanted to try several things we ordered five small and large plates. All very tasty. Finished by getting both of the desserts that are offered. Mixed review between all of us. Overall a good meal. Two complaints, one, rice does not come with the sauce dishes. Have to order extra. Also when it's time to pay you don't get a complete order receipt to make sure everything is correct. They hand you a machine and insert or tap card and add tip. They ask if you want a receipt but it only shows the card transaction. read more
