This little gem is hiding in a small office building behind a gas station. The staff was very friendly. They have a big menu and offer breakfast all day. YAY! I love places that do that! I ordered beef fajita omelette and WOW! it was fabulous! It had as much meat in it as you typically get in a fajita entree. The refried beans were smokey flavored and very good. After yelping "mexican food" for an hour with my boyfriend, we finally decided on Vazquez. Although it was a little out of the way, it was WELL WORTH IT! We are from southern California so we know good mexican food when we get it. Vazquez definitely hit the spot. The chips and salsa alone were good enough to come back. They were warm, and perfect crispiness - not too thin, but not too thick. The salsa had just enough kick to it to where I wasn't dying for water. My boyfriend ordered 2 tacos; one brisket and one beef fajita. He loved both but loved the beef fajita one a little bit more :) I ordered the beef fajita plate. It was outstanding! The meat was seasoned to perfection and it came with the perfect amount of rice, beans, sour cream, guacamole, etc... Finally, we ordered the flan to-go. Although I only had a bite before we left, I was in heaven. Forget Trudy's, Las Cazuelas, Habanero, and Curras... Take my word for it, and GO TO VAZQUEZ NOW!!! Holy Jesus, this place is amazing. If you leave here not satisfied or unhappy you must have done something wrong and/or ordered the wrong thing. On my trip to this place I ordered three tacos. One barbacoa, one mexican brisket and one carne guisada and my girlfriend ordered one beef fajita, one barbacoa as well and one picadillo. All of the tacos we ordered were absolutely amazing. The carne guisada is amazing and I intend to order the carne guisada plate next time. First off, despite what any of the reviews may say contrary to this, they DO NOT have homemade tortillas. This is not a big deal to me but don't go in here expecting homemade tortillas because this could be a source of disappointment for you. But really, it isn't a big deal. Secondly, don't bitch about premade/preformed crispy tortillas. Tell me a place in Austin, a real restaurant, not a food truck, that makes their own crispy taco shells. C'mon, to the guy who ordered crispy tacos expecting otherwise, you set yourself up for disappointment. Also, you must have been on an off day, my girlfriends beef fajita in the taco she ordered was amazing! The salsa has an awesome flavor but is thin and liquidy, I'm more of a chunky salsa kind of guy, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Their prices are also good, I like the average price of $1.99 per taco, that is very reasonable. It allows for ordering several to find out what you like the best. The chips do not cost extra, must have been a billing mistake or something for that one guy. First off, beware of this location's hours. They close at 4pm Monday through Thursday. I can't fathom why they would close exactly when people are looking for an early dinner, but they do, and the waitress showed her irritation that we existed, even though we came in at 2:45 for a late lunch. Most of the waitstaff were walking out the door while we were waiting for drink refills. Eventually, the wife got up and took my tea to the front counter. The waitress was confused, and didn't even offer an apology. There was no salt or sugar at our table. Two of us ordered iced tea, and the waitress seemed confused that we would want sugar. Eventually she took it from another table, but really? It's not obvious when someone orders unsweet iced tea that they're going to want sugar? The salsa is pretty terrible. It's like tasteless ketchup with pureed jalapenos mixed in. The consistency is just plain weird, and while the taste isn't offensive, it's definitely not good. It's more like bland with a bit of hot mixed in. The above is a shame, because the food itself was actually surprisingly good. I got chile con queso enchiladas with chicken, and the wife got a cheese enchilada plate. The meat in the chicken enchiladas was surprisingly tasty, as was the rice and beans. As far as the entrees go, I think actual cooks have a hand in things. If only they would help out with the salsa. read more

What I liked Tacos were good: barbacoa and chorizo and egg. I like that they press the grease out of the fillings before serving. Normally I soak the grease up with napkins at other restaurants. What I really did not like: The 700 Club ,blaring television station. We all know Austin is a progressive town. Do we really need to hear how homosexuals are bad people and that we all need to proclaim Jesus as our pesonal Lord and Savior? The propaganda just really wrecked my mood. We had intended to go to Enchiladas Y Mas, but it was packed, so we used Yelp to find an alternative close by. So glad we did. The food is absolutely solid - traditional Mexican breakfast standards. Migas were great - the corn chip bits were extra thick and crisp. Over-easy eggs were perfect - a big plus, because my picky child loves runny yolks but freaks out if he sees any "clear" egg white. Kids. Service was quick and efficient - love how they brought us a carafe of coffee so we could handle refills ourselves. They also gave us dispensers of hot sauce, which was great so we could pour it on. The hot sauce was unusual - more liquid consistency like Tabasco rather than chunky or even diced. Not what I had expected, but still delicious and we gobbled it up. We went at around 11:00am on a Sunday, and it was bustling but no line, so we got a table right away. Parking lot is tight - bring the smallest vehicle you can get your hands on. So next time show up at Enchiladas Y Mas and it's a long wait, just head up Burnet another 1.5 miles and check out Vazquez. read more

I can not believe it! ! The food today was just awful. The place was normal, not too many people. So, rushing the order could not have played a factor. I always come here when I get a haircut next door. The special came quick as usual, it appeared not cooked all the way. The taste of the cheese enchiladas was sour and the cheese was not melted all the way through. The salsa was very watery. So much so that I hardly able to keep it on a chip. I'm in shock.. Vazquez has the best tacos you have never tasted. Cheap too. Before they moved into this actual store tucked into the shopping center next to Tigermarket, they sold tacos and breakfast plates from a trailer parked in front of some crappy bar on Burnet Road. I used to go there in the mornings after work when I worked the night shift (to Vazquez not the bar) and there was always a line, even before they opened up the trailer for business. Which is funny because the location was directly across the street from a 24-hour Taco Cabana. My favorite is the potato egg and cheese taco but I also recommend the chorizo or guiso. Their salsa is better than most restaurants so make sure you get an extra cup or two. read more

Great Tex-Mex restaurant up north that for the most part has yet to be discovered by the hipster Austin crowd. Eating here on a Saturday morning, majority of patrons were groups of local families with kids, and hard working day laborers on their day off. Menu offers traditional favorites that all Tex-Mex fans will be familiar with, plus a few unique and creative specials to keep things interesting: Adobado Plate, Tacos Rancheros. Our breakfasts were excellent. Fresh ingredients prepared: flavorful ranchero sauce was made with fresh cut and cooked vegetable chunks as opposed to using simple sauce with onions cooked in that many restaurants do nowadays). Great flavors. Simple restaurant furnishings and decor: simple wood tabletops, metal chairs with cushioning. Two walls of the restaurant are windows which allows for great lighting. Usually I don't care abt service at these type of places, but the waitresses here are particularly pleasant. We work right across the street from this location and we generally come here at least once a week for breakfast tacos. I love this place, the ladies are all very friendly and helpful and they've actually started to know who I am. I'm not a "regular" by any stretch, but it is nice when they know who you are. I've gotten different tacos pretty much every time I've gone and they are always really good. I've read some of the other reviews and NO, this isn't Torchy's or Tacodeli, but they are still really good. And they are really inexpensive for fresh made tacos, I got 5 items on mine this morning and it was still less than $3. read more

So, if you read the reviews, there are some excellent, and some terrible. I can now say, after a second visit, they are both right. The consistency here is terrible. I previously gave this place 5 stars, and the tacos were that good. This time, I switched it up and tried the Carne Guisada and Mexican Brisket, both on corn. The tortillas were store-bought, but that's common. But they tasted like they were just microwaved. None of that grilled flavor I love with my corn tortillas. The Mexican Brisket was a greasy mushy mess. It tasted like it had sat in a crock pot all day. The flavor was ok. The Carne Guisada, on the other hand, tasted like a can of Dinty Moore beef stew, except at least that has been trimmed and cooked until soft (and, if you were inclined to eat a can of beef stew, you know what kind of nastiness to expect). This was grisly, greasy, chewy, fatty... GROSS. Yuck! I've now averaged my 5 star and 1 star experiences to 3, but I don't know if I'll risk it again... too many other great options. My husband recommended we try this place out. I have to say that I was NOT disappointed. The service was fast and friendly. I could tell by the chips and salsa that we had come to dine at a good place. The chips weren't salty or greasy and the salsa had the right amount of "pica". They were the perfect compliment to my Dos XX. I ordered the chicken fajita nachos, and my husband ordered three tacos. My husband cleaned his plate. I had two nachos left and took them home. Went here today after yelping "breakfast" for a while this morning. We were both in the mood for barbacoa and this place had good reviews. The food was great! Vazquez Deluxe: Two eggs, potatoes, beans, and a choice between barbacoa/carne guisada/ or picadillo. I got the barbacoa, and I thought it was perfect. It was exactly what you want in barbacoa, and there was enough food on the plate for about 4 tacos. The beans were fantastic, as were the potatoes. --My only subtraction on the plate were the eggs. They were just ehhh. They would be fine if served in tacos, but as a stand alone, eh. My husband had the beef fajita omelet. He only ate half of it because he ordered some barbacoa tacos also (which were perfect with the cilantro and onion). The omelet was great, and my dad (who ate the other half) agreed. My little one got a cheese enchilada and ate it all. He gave it 5 stars. Salsa: While it was a little runnier than I like, the taste and spice were perfect. I couldn't get enough of it, it was awesome. Tortillas: Really pretty disappointing. They did the job of course, but they definitely could be better. My husband and I have been here a number of times and love it. The El Pastor tacos are the best. We each get a couple with guacamole on top, a side of queso, and two iced teas. The food always tastes extra fresh, and we always leave feeling full and happy without feeling like we just had a huge greasy meal. I just found this Vazquez location after years of driving all the way to the I-35 & Braker location. This is the second location opened after the original on I-35. Its the same amazing food and prices and half the wait to get a table. I always get the chorizo and egg breakfast plate. its super cheap and tastes better than most any other breakfast I've had in austin. Great service, great prices, great food. I would put them over Torchy's, Taco Deli, and Taco Shack. Haven't done take out from this location, and there's no drive thru, so if your in a hurry, you might have to settle for one of the three above mentioned places. read more
