I stopped in for a quick breakfast taco before my meeting nearby. I wanted to try it because of the positive yelp reviews. I got one bean egg and bacon and one bean egg and potato taco, both on corn tortillas. They were very good. The tortilla wasn't anything special but the filling was really good. I especially liked the beans, which had an almost smoky flavor like they had been cooked with bacon or ham hocks. Very tasty. I also enjoyed their salsa, which comes in your own pourable container. It is not chunky at all and is really quite thin, but it tastes like a mix of salsa and enchilada sauce, a good combination that I really like. I would love to come back at lunch time and try it on some chips. The coffee comes in your own pot, kind of like IHOP, which I really liked, because I could pour my own refills. The waitress was pleasant and the whole experience was enjoyable. I will definately be back to try some more dishes at breakfast, and also at lunch. Really disappointing. This use to be our go to for tacos and breakfast in Austin, but we haven't been here in years. The fajitas were cold and too tough to chew. The guacamole tasted like spicy lime. The enchiladas suiza were so spicy they were inedible. We passed on Trudy's to eat here and I really regret it. Very sad how far downhill the quality of their food as gone in just a few years, not to mention their prices have doubled on most items. read more

Thanks Yelpers for steering me in the right direction for breakfast! I had an out-of-town friend that was staying on Hwy 183 so I had to look for a place where we could meet up for breakfast that wouldn't be out of her way and this lovely little place popped up after some searching. We all had various breakfast dishes and all were great. I had the chilaquiles with a salsa verde. The dish was topped with some queso fresco, eggs, and potatoes. YUM. The friends who had the breakfast tacos and omelette said everything was tasty. Usually places like this don't have the best coffee, but I thought their coffee was above average! The place was only 1/4 full on a Sunday at 10:30 a.m., but it slowly started filling up an hour later. read more

Great! Usually when I visit Austin I stay closer to the core of the city. Since I was out north I looked for a place to have sunday morning breakfast and am I glad I did. This is a welcoming place with good food and service. I had the fajita and eggs combo and wasnt disappointed. Thirty years ago it was easy to find "home cooked" style mexican breakfast. I love their barbacoa and hevos rancheros! I often grab the breakfast tacos for work and play hero for the day! Nothing feels better then the taste of homemade food! Once you do find parking though, it will be a distant memory, especially if you order their Chilaquiles which were my favorite out of what we ordered. This is a Hole-in-the-Wall joints that we all dream of finding that serves delicious food. On our last day in Austin, Texas...the family, and I just wanted to eat a Mexican breakfast and luckily for us, we found this gem. Let me make it clear, the looks aren't eye pleasing...but, DON'T let that deter you from checking this restaurant out. The flavors of their dishes will make you forget about that and just place you in Food Heaven. :) I highly recommend their Chilaquiles dish, they were among the best I've had outside my my Mother's kitchen. Navigating the parking lot is worth a trip to this restaurant for lunch or all day breakfast. You can sit where you want, you are given chips with an amazing spicy red salsa. My fiends and I each get a breakfast taco and a lunch taco. The portion sizes of the tacos are really filling. The only problem is a personal problem, I over-eat. Maybe if Vasquez didn't make the delicious salsa and amazing tacos, I wouldn't have a self-control problem? This is a restaurant overshadowed by other tacos joints with fancy overpriced tacos which are likely not as good. Change it up from time to time and give this place a try! read more

Loved eating here, our server Connie was super sweet and kind, she gave kind motherly vibes and made sure we were well taken care of! The chilaquiles taco was so good, perfect amount of spice and the texture of the tortilla chips was very nice and crispy. I also got the nopales and egg breakfast taco which I didn't like as much but was still pretty decent. Classic, great, hole-in-the-wall Mexican with everything that entails. Small tables with vinyl tablecloths and vinyl-covered chairs. The refried beans actually taste a little of pork because they obviously have lard in them. But those are all good signs for the food. I got the enchiladas verdes which were delicious and with tax came to less than $6 which is ridiculous. The al-pastor plate also looked delicious and was only $8. I saw other tables with guacamole that looked really good too. If you're looking for good, simple, cheap Mexican food, this is it. I'll definitely be back. read more

These are some of the best breakfast tacos in town - I know that tough to do in a place like Austin, but it is true. One of the reasons they are good is that it is a perfect balance of egg and other items. The tortillas appear to be freshly made and the red sauce is delicious. While in Texas, our ride share driver recommended my friend and I to have breakfast here and we were so glad we did. It was only a short distance away from where we were staying and the food was just delicious. I ended up getting 4 breakfast tacos which were all very delicious. (when they say everything is bigger in Texas they are not lying) The tacos, the water, the plates everything was huge at this restaurant. We went during lunch hour and it seemed like there were a lot of work men there having lunch which usually is a good sign since that means its the neighborhood go too place. It was like a large enchilada with a few chunks of fatty pork in it and a ton of their flavorless rice, smothered in Adobado sauce The pork was cooked in. Unfortunately I had asked a friend to cover the cost and I would pay him back, only to find out the horrible food cost $20 for that plate as prices are not listed. The crew ate at Vasquez today. The food ranges from "ok", to "nothing special". We ordered: - enchiladas suizas - chicken enchiladas - chicken fajitas - al pastor The swiss enchiladas have an OK flavor and are relatively low fat. The chicken enchiladas are covered in bright yellow manufactured cheese and nothing special - "like most of the blah tasting chicken enchaladas served at hundreds of texmex restaurants". I specifically asked if the fajitas are grilled or cooked on a griddle. I was told grilled. What I received had been previously grilled then reheated on a griddle with fat. They were over cooked from being cooked twice, marginally OK but nothing special. The al pastor were cooked on a flat top griddle, not overly fatty, but not much flavor. They only beans available are refried. Beware vegetarians - They are cooked with bacon and bacon grease! The hot sauce is "muy picante" but not very flavorful. The guacamole is bland - lacking onion and salt. So in conclusion, if you like bland tasting texmex, over cooked proteins and manufactured cheese, you will probably like this place. read more

It was a marathon day of cookie baking. I had powdered sugar all over me and cookie dough under my fingernails. My nose was saturated with vanilla. Hubby called me out on an errand in the middle of my baking frenzy, and while I was initially put out, I discovered that it felt great to get out in the nice spring like Dec weather, so I decided to run some Christmas errands. I found myself starving as I'd only had coffee, mimosas, and raw cookie dough all day and as I was near Vazquez and had been curious about them for some time, I swung by for tacos to go. I wanted something hot, spicy and salty. I was the only person in the joint and it was quick and easy to order a couple of tacos at the counter. I got the al pastor and the Mexican brisket tacos for a grand total of $4.31. They came out fast and super hot! And I was supplied with salsa and lime as well. I drove down the road with them to my next stop but the aroma was killing me, so I wolfed them down right there in front of the Dollar Tree. I'm Klassy like that. Both were still piping hot and full of flavor, with surprisingly, the brisket being my favorite. I'm a pastor kinda girl, and while it had great flavor, chock full of onion and cilantro (no pineapple tho! boo), the brisket was spicy and salty and full of tender meat and rice. It's still kinda haunting me. After downing those tacos, I couldn't wait to go in and get me some $1 water! This was the perfect baking/shopping pick me up. And while I don't normally make tacos a destination location for food (sorry), I'll definitely swing by here again for tacos to go! Oh man, oh man, oh man. This is some good stuff. Vazquez is a walk away from my apartment and I've been curious about it for a few months now. My grandparents came to visit for dinner and, wanting something close that could cater to my Texan relatives whose ethnic culinary appreciation goes only so far, finally bit the bullet. I Yelp-lusted it, yes, but I had never actually SEEN it. It's in the same complex as a shady hotel. It looks so plain and unassuming that I knew it would be great as soon as we pulled up. We walked in, were seated, perused the menu. Standard Mexican fare, pretty extensive menu, seemingly serving breakfast all day. We were served above average chips with WELL above average salsa- served in the same device you get for your syrup at IHOP. It was flavorful and SPICY. Not to an unpleasant extreme, but as a person who normally loves things to be unpleasantly hot, I could recognize it. My boyfriend who, like me, loves spice, thought it was pretty high. My grandparents are so vanilla that they don't even eat salsa (especially of the spicy variety) but kept going back for more. It shocked me, really. I asked the waitress whether I should get the chilaquiles or the huevos rancheros and the smile on her face when she recommended tthe chilaquiles gave me a sense of hope I haven't felt since I was a child. When they arrived? The best I've ever had. perfectly crispy yet soggy tortilla slices and the over easy eggs and red sauce just melded perfectly. The re-fried beans that accompanied it were DELICIOUS. I do think it's fair to note that I'm pretty sure they were made with lard. I'm a vegetarian but my one embarrassing concession is beans; I know the legit restaurants always have lard, and I haven't eaten meat in years but... I just love re-fried beans, man. I just love beans. I want some beans right now. I'm a total hypocrite because I didn't try my side order of rice because I feared it could be prepared with a meat product. My grandparents ordered chicken quesadillas and I don't know what else. My boyfriend ordered a barbacoa taco and some type of soup. Pazole? Is that the one with hamony? I'm just too lazy to Google it. They all lauded their respective dishes. The only complaint I have is that the flour tortillas were really crispy. If I'm making a delicious taco mishmash of bean, chilaquile, eggs, and salsa that perfect icing on the Tres Leches is a wonderful scratch-made tortilla that is soft and able to hold up. Really, though, for all I know traditional flour tortillas are crispy like that. I'm not taking it too much into consideration, but that's why I've got no 5-star freakout here. Think Cheko's on Koenig- cheap as hell, delicious as hell, legit as hell- but better. When I'm deciding where to dine, I generally want to try something new as often as possible even over my old standbys, but this place has made it's way onto that roster. I will DEFINITELY be back. This place is in a pretty strange location. It sits right next to a gas station in a small sideways strip mall. I honestly wasn't expecting much, and I am not even sure how I decided this was the place I wanted to go for lunch that day... but somehow I ended up eating here, and I liked it! My husband and I pulled into this spot for some tacos to go. This little place was charming and the staff was friendly. Our to go order was ready to go in a relatively short amount of time. The ONLY reason I took off a star is due to the tacos themselves. When I bit into the taco, juice squirted out the bottom. I don't like watery taco meat and I hate wet tortillas. I have known Senior Vasquez since he was selling tacos from a van (before it was cool). I used to eat there daily when I worked down the street. The Potato, bean and cheese taco with plenty of homemade hot sauce was a staple in my diet. Now it is a special Saturday treat of Fatija and Egg plate with refried bean and potatos. I came here with a group of co-workers and absolutely loved my el pastor plate. Everyone in our group really enjoyed their dishes. Food and service was quick and we were in & out in about 45 minutes. The only thing that would have given them more stars is better corn tortillas. The ones that were provided with our table reminded me of ones that you'd buy at the grocery store. Tried this restaurant based on the reviews. They're accurate. Old little strip center next to the busiest Exxon/Mobil in the world at 183 & Burnet. Don't miss it though. I had to order quickly because the were about to close. I had three taco's. Beef fajita, Chicken Fajita and Carne Guisada. They were all good and the fajita meat was grilled well. I wish I'd had more time to review the menu and order a little bit of everything. The salsa and chips were also good. Salsa was spicy and kinda like a puree. Not thick or chunky but really good. I first got introduced to Mr. Vasquez when he only had a taco trailer in 2000. Since then he has (I believe) 3 restaurants now. His chicken and rice is the best in Austin and I can't find anyone who can beat his chorizo and eggs for breakfast. Tortillas are always great and the pork adobado is the normal for me. Caldo de res forever!!! o/ Vasquez has held me captive for over 5 years, and remains my go to Mexican restaurant. I love the simplicity and calmness due to each location being fairly small. Modest is probably the best descriptor, but the flavor is most definitely not. Not over seasoned, but perfectly balanced. And the spiciest table salsa I've found anywhere yet. The food here is really solid. I'm originally from San Antonio, so my standards for Mexican are high. The beans and rice are good, as are the enchiladas, and the chips and salsa are addictive. My friend had a burrito that was really tasty too. My one beef is that they serve store bought tortillas on the side. I can't tell you how disappointing it is to open the red container and see store bought tortillas. Blerg! I don't even eat them. But in a land of crappy Mexican food, Vazquez is a good bet that satisfies the craving. The vibe is right too. read more
