VCA, a California-based mega-corporation, came in and bought several veterinary clinics in the area with River City being one of them. Immediately, the care quality dropped and the prices skyrocketed. What used to be a warm, inviting, place to take our pets, is now a volume-based conveyor belt of greed. I had brought my Bully in because of an intermittent limp to VCA. The Vet basically gave us an hour long guilt trip- sales pitch about an invasive surgery to "fix" the ligaments in my 1 year old dogs leg. Mind you this is before any MRI or Xray was done. The procedure was 5k+ and the Vet insisted the problem would get worse without medical intervention. Fast forward 2 years later to now and my dog has had no problems and recovered with rest alone. Totally predatory because they could tell w were worried about our best buddy. How can you insist on a surgery on such a young dog with no imaging? Take your pet somewhere else!!! I do not post reviews very often, but this pet hospital is so fantastic I had to let others know. After we got our St Bernard puppy, VCA River City was recommended to us as I have not been able to find a good vet in the Spokane area. I live south of Spokane, so this is quite a drive for me. From the moment I first walked in, I was amazed. It's a beautiful facility with a large waiting room so everyone's pets have their own space. What I noticed right away was how homey it was. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The staff were over the top friendly and helpful and the doctor was amazing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They really do practice the newest medicine which I was pleased with. Their prices were average for medical pet care. I have had three visits and am so impressed, I recommend them to everyone I know. We have been going to River City Animal Hospital for since it opened, having followed Dr. Clovis from Prairie Animal Hospital. While we were saddened by the departure and retirement of Dr. Clovis and Dr. Luce, the service levels provided by the new staff has been top quality. A few years ago we paid into a monthly payment service that spreads the fees associated with dog care over the year, including dental cleaning. This worked out well, cost wise, while our pet was younger, but the fees went up as he aged, without any rationale for the extra cost/benefit. We have since drop that subscription model and will pay as we go. I suggest others that are on the CareClub plans carefully review the monthly fees vs. services provided and not 'auto renew' without running the numbers. Overall, we recommend this Hospital for your pet care. read more

Best words to describe this place: Greed and Dishonesty Do not bring your pet here if you are completely unaware of or have no clue what the problem is. They will squeeze every penny out of you if you let them. Glad it only took me two visits to this place to realize it and 2nd time around I caught them in the act! Word of advice to the entire vet clinic here. Next time you are trying to swindle a person. Dont tell them one test is more accurate than the other and then not answer them when asked why not just do the most accurate test and leave the other one out? Then on top of all that, you try to guilt me by acting like we're irresponsible owners because I questioned all the things being done. A wise person always asks questions. Especially when you charge them $75.00 for a checkup and spend 5 mins asking questions and feeling the belly and throat of our cat in which we never asked for and then demand payment almost immediately when you got caught in your lie about the tests. It was to my understanding through my wife over the phone that this was going to be a simple test to check for keytones in the blood. A cost no more than the range of $35-$50. But then you added in all this unnecessary other stuff inflating the bill to $275.00! Luckily we only paid the $75.00 for the 5 min checkup and no more because the so called checkup was already done in 5 mins before we could say no to it! Hes pre-diabetic! What do you think you are going to learn about his pre-diabetes by feeling his tummy and throat!? The people who run this place give vets a bad name. We will be buying pretty litter to check for keytones and using test strips to keep track of our cat's pre-diabetes and that it is continuing to go into remission ourselves for much less than what this place was trying to squeeze out of us! This place was already under suspicion before I walked in for this visit knowing that we called the emergency vet hospital near by us who ran tests for us free of charge to check for diabetes and said our cat was healthy and in remission when he hurt his leg getting out of the litter box. We gave you that vet office's info! They said you guys never called to request that information! So whose telling the truth? Feels like you insisted we bring our cat in to run several tests to get money and lie about the emergency vet's office claiming they dont have the info which would have made the visit completely pointless to begin with. I would gladly pay the emergency vet hospital more money than this place was trying to get out of me. I have previously left comments about this VCA River City Animal Hospital - Post Falls; and they continue to earn my negative reviews. My dog has severe allergies. This clinic prescribed medicated shampoo and Apoquel to treat her symptoms, but never took the time to diagnose the underlying problem, although they did refer me out to an allergy clinic that would literally cost thousands of dollars, an option I could not afford. Most recently, her Apoquel prescription ran out of refills. Maybe I should have been more aware of this, but I wasn't. I have just been giving her the meds, refilling the prescription, lather - rinse - repeat. Also unfortunately, Idaho is one of the few states remaining where I am unable to get a prescription online, so I called VCA River City Animal Hospital - Post Falls to get a refill. There was truly no reason for an inpatient appointment except to extract cash. They had previously made it clear that testing wasn't an option, so if they weren't going to test, then what is the point? I was then told it would be 2-3 weeks for an appointment. Keep in mind that this would be 2-3 weeks of suffering for my poor dog. No stopgap solution was offered, like a temporary prescription to get her to the next appointment. When I voiced concern about this I was transferred to the office manager who was horribly rude to me. She was clearly aware and angry that I had previously left a negative Yelp review. My takeaway from this is if you leave a negative review of VCA Animal Hospital - Post Falls, expect your dog to suffer. She also snidely challenged me to leave another negative review, I said I definitely would; and here I am, keeping my promise. I have since found a new vet who has run the tests that VCA River City Animal Hospital - Post Falls should have in the first place, has provided FANTASTIC customer service, and has begun a course of treatment for my dog that is showing immediate positive results. While your results may vary, my experience with this business has been very negative, and I am very happy to be rid of them, especially considering how good my new vet clinic is. I'm kicking myself for not switching sooner. read more

I seen an ad for free exam with this pet hospital. I made an appointment for my pooch to establish on going care for him. I made it to the appointment and gave a little background info. He has never been to a vet do to lack of interest from previous owner. I myself had given his 1st shots, everything but his rabies. Yes I'm aware of the importance of the shot and he will be fully vaccinated in a short time. He never did get the free exam I had initially went in for. The tech was mire concerned about giving him that shot. She had left a few times to talk to vet, came back telling me by law my pooch had to get his rabies shot that day. THERE IS NO LAW IN IDAHO THAT STATES YOUR ANIMAL HAS TO HAVE THE RABIES SHOT!! It is recommended but not a law. I will not be returning. I couldn't ask for more empathy, compassion, or knowledge when it comes to the care of my animals. After a rapid illness, we worked with Dr. Luce to try and find the best route of care for our girl, Anna. They took us in as an ER case and they worked fast and communicated with us as often as they could. Unfortunately, we hit a wall with our old girl and decided it was time to let her rest. Doctor Luce was incredible. He walked myself and my twin seven year olds through the whole process, and was emotionally available for all of us as we let her go. I've been taking Sam to River City for 4 years now. Dr. Clovis has been great at making sure Sam is taken care of and his health is managed. He's been excellent with referring us to specialists as needed, and thoroughly discussing the pros and cons of various treatment options. I appreciate the estimate ranges prior to procedures and have never had a surprise when receiving my final bill. Sam loves coming to the vet, and the doctors and all the employees seem to genuinely enjoy seeing him. While Dr. Clovis is our primary, Sam's seen every vet in the practice so far but the newest addition, and they're all attentive and caring. read more

They lied about the cost of the vet visit. They told my family that it would be $400 to spay my dog and then when I picked her up they charged me $750. When I asked why they laughed and said sorry about the complications when there wasn't any. They have now affiliated with a large corporate organization and the service is now awful. Had a call today with someone from somewhere not sure where and asked for the 2nd time to remove me from their spam list, told me it couldn't be done and them wanted me to contact their corporate headquartes. Spoke with 2 different rude and snarky women neither who was very intelligent. If you live in the North Idaho area I would strongly discourage you from using this service there are plenty of other good providers. If you look at their reveiws you will see they all turned negative in 2020 when the switched to VCA. read more

Too many misdiagnoses. Missed one of my dogs lymphoma when millwood found it in 5 minutes, diagnosed my yorkie with prostate infection when it was prostate cancer and said my cats ears were causing her to lose her balance when it was a brain tumor. Pass! read more

Have used Rivercity for many years for several pets. My how times have changed. In the past several years we have received questionable treatments, but still stuck with them. Last week was the last straw. Brought our dog in to be euthanized. What should have been a peaceful passing was not. The Dr attempted to administer the sedative and the catheter was not functioning. The techs proceeded to remove it. Rather than cutting the tape they pulled and pulled on the tape as it was tangled in her long hair. They were unable to get the catheter back in the same leg, so they tried the other, which had already been shaven, I'm assuming they had tried it earlier. After finally getting the catheter in, the doctor was able to administer the sedative. We were told for $25 they would provide a cardboard box shaped like a coffin. They charged for it but did not have a box large enough and were digging through the recycle dumpster to find something and taped boxes together. The Dr said it would be flimsy to try and carry her. We opted to wrap her in the duvet cover we brought with us. Several days later I had to contact them and ask that they refund to my credit card. What was a very hard and emotional decision turned out a disaster. I think I was in shock sitting there with her wondering if we should take her and leave. I have found a new vet and won't be looking back. read more

I had to take Buddy into River City Animal Hospital three times, all of which impressed me greatly. The last two times, I met with Dr. Clovis and was so thankful for the amazing care he provided to my 11-year old dachshund, Buddy. The last time I took Buddy in, we had to reluctantly put him to sleep. Dr. Clovis and his staff were so sympathetic, and gave us every moment they could to spend with Buddy in between the preparations they needed to make. I was happy they set Buddy up with an IV, rather than just giving him a shot. When it was time, I got to hold Buddy, who was all tensed up with the extreme pain he was in. It was so important to me that my family and I got to comfort, kiss and love him while he relaxed and eased away so peacefully. We were given one more moment after he passed. I thanked God for Buddy and prayed for him to watch over my dear friend. The staff then took Buddy and assured me, "we'll take excellent care of your handsome man and call you in a week." Putting down one of my best friends was one of the toughest things I've ever had to do. However, Dr. Clovis and River City Animal Hospital were so compassionate towards Buddy and us. I would recommend them and only them for Veterinary needs. Should I get another dog, I'm glad to have the best Vet to rely on. I hope River City Animal Hospital Staff and Dr. Clovis read this and know they made a difference with my family, and most importantly, Buddy the dachshund. read more

Unfortunately my dog was in an accident. I took her in on emergency on a Sunday Dr. Clovis met me there. His & his staff did an amazing thorough job treating her. She stayed with them for 3 days. My 2 yrs old daughter & i visited every day. The staff was so kind & respectful & even helped me with my daughter. This was a very tough time for us as we ended up having to put her down They gave her amazing care & made the experiencethe best they could. I know they did everything possible to save her. Took my dog in for recurring ear infection in April. Called today to get prescription renewed for same ear infection. They said it has been 6 months and can not renew the prescription. They want to see the dog first. We no longer have employment and therefore cannot afford a vet bill. I explained that but they would rather the dog be in pain then to renew meds for an ear infection. Pretty pathetic. The 6 months is this month. How can they decline it. read more

Every single person on the staff is very kind. We had to put our dog, so being there under those circustances you can imagine how we felt. The room was very comfortable and it kept our dog at ease because it didn't have the animal hospital feel you can often find at other places. On both of our visits, the doctor offered an ""If this was my dog..." but in a way that I still felt that the choice was ours. As new adoptees, we don't have a point of reference for cost of services, but I am very comfortable with the fees. I love this place. Dr. Luce is probably my favorite vet we have ever had. He is caring and tells you what should be done but doesn't pressure you to do anything. We have a dog and two cats. I really love him because he has cats as well and understands more about what goes on in the day to day life of a cat than many vets who only own dogs. We had gone to another vet for about two years (since we moved here) and after we switched we found out that both of our cats had teeth that where broken and incredibly painful. The x-rays made me want to cry. It also made mad because no one at the other vet EVER said anything about their teeth to us. So not both of them only have front teeth and canines. Since we got their teeth done you can tell they are so much happier and they are eating more. I can not recommended this place enough! read more

She is compassionate and sincere. Dr Johnson shows an unmistakable and genuine love towards animals. This is made even more evident when I see my dogs become excited and happy/eager to see her. She loves them, and they love her. The staff at River City is also exceptional. We were greeted at the door by the receptionist who took our dog right back to the doctor and they began working on him before they got any information from us. Dr. Luce and his team were wonderful to our dog. They determined that he had eaten a poisonous mushroom. They were unable to save him. They were very caring and treated us very kindly.
