First time back since it changed from Loving Hut. We are not vegan but enjoy vegan food sometimes. The food was excellent. We had the scallion pancakes, pot sticker, vegan tree fried rice and happy Buddha. All delicious. As for the people complaining about the smell of cigarettes, it is unfortunate that the restaurant is located next door to a tobacco store. I'm sure that's where the smell is coming from. I'm not a vegan but I decided to try out Vegan Tree and was not disappointed. I tried the happy Buddha which is stir fried broccoli, carrots and seitan which looks and tastes like beef. I walked in the door at 3:16pm. We ordered by 3:20pm. There was only one other table with customers. By approx 3:45pm we finally received the crispy rolls and spring rolls. Things that should take 2 minutes to make took 25 minutes. Also- my friend specified no tofu in her springs rolls, and they came out with tofu. She sent it back. Then they brought the same plate with the tofu picked out. How do we know?? There were holes in the rolls where the tofu was. It's now 4:17pm and I still don't have my soup. SOUP!!!!!! The waitress came around asking if we wanted refills on our water, we said yes. She had enough in her pitcher to pour ONE half cup. Hmm. Go get a full pitcher and THEN ask if we want a refill. I also ordered a soup to go though and she literally just brought that out to me. Why the heck would they cook something that's to go before they cook the food I want to eat in?!? The other table that's here, they're getting one dish brought out every 15 minutes or so, and one woman at that table who still hasn't received her food basically just asked them to cancel her order as everyone she's with is done eating. The waitress told her no because "he's already cooking it" I got sick of waiting and stood up to see the waitress, asked her to just pack my other soup to go and I'd just eat the one I have in front of me. She said ok. A moment later she came up to me and asked "what soup?" And I said did you not put the order in?! She said yes she did, she just didn't remember the name of it, so I told her the wonton soup. She went to the back, came back a few moments later and said she never put the order in, do I still want it? NO! I will NEVER be back. We spent well over an hour here for the worst service ever. Just came here for lunch at around 12:15 pm. In summary, the food is really good but the service is just horrible. This place is clearly understaffed. It took us 2 hours to order, eat, and pay for our food and we were the only ones in the restaurant. There was 4 of us. What I got: $15 lunch special which is worth it from a financial stand point. I got the sriracha chicken burger with spring rolls and a taro milk tea. I am from Los Angeles so I have very high standards for boba -- and the milk tea was fine but the boba was straight gross. I would recommend getting it without boba or bubbles as y'all call it here. The chicken burger was delish and I'd recommend it. The peanut sauce with the spring rolls are also bomb. All in all 4/5 stars. Service: took forever to place our order and get our food. There was only one waiter and probably just one chef. TBH at one point I thought he might be doing both that's how long it took. Also our entree came out before the appetizer which didn't make a lot of sense. Took forever for my friends Korean ramen to come out. I would've given 5 stars if the service was quicker and the boba tasted better! The restaurant reeked of cigarettes when I first arrived. I used the restroom and it appeared that it had not been cleaned in weeks. The entire restaurant seemed really dirty and the table had a strange sticky feeling to it. I was not impressed with the offerings on the menu and finally decided on the onion blossom petals. We used to frequent Vegan Tree when it was Loving Hut. Loving Hut had its good dishes and it's not so stellar dishes. One of those dishes I loved was Golden Charm- crispy, spicy goodness that was worth the half an hour trip. I couldn't resist, seeing it on the Vegan Tree menu, I had to try it. Definitely different than the previous establishment's offering but equally delicious. The husband got the Happy Buddha and he loved it so much he wants to come back to get it again. Like Loving Hut, Vegan Tree is a quaint and calm little eatery with dimmed lights and soft, relaxing music. What a gem! I really hope Vegan Tree stays around and gets its well-deserved popularity. The service is attentive, the prices are modest, and, most importantly, the food is DELICIOUS. We ordered: 1. Summer rolls: healthy and delicious, especially the sauce. 2. Crispy rolls: really good, loved the sauce. 3. Buddha bowl: phenomenal. As someone who grew up loving chicken and broccoli, this was an amazing throwback. Delicious, healthy, and filling. I also loved the brown rice. It looked like a mix of wild rice and cranberries, if I'm not mistaken. Definitely a nice touch. 4. Wonton soup: honestly, it felt weird to pay $10 for wonton soup, when non-vegan versions were always a side. It was 100% worth it. This was HUGE (see the photos on Yelp by others) and a meal in itself. It was absolutely delicious. 5. Chocolate cake: decadent, moist... as someone who rarely enjoys vegan desserts, this was a treasure. Loved every bite. This has my hands down recommendation! I don't see why this restaurant has 4 stars. Maybe I chose the wrong day or not a favorite meal? I went on a weekday at noon time and the place was empty. My table was dirty and sticky, the restaurant had a strange smell and there were fruit flies around, so I was constantly swatting them away. I chose the vegan burger, it was my first time trying a vegan burger, it was eh, ok. My cousin had the miso soup, she did like that. I'll definitely give the vegan burger another try, but from a different place. Don't think I'll visit this spot again. read more

If you were a frequent flyer at Loving Hut, and were unhappy with the restaurant's new incarnation as Vegan Tree, I would give it another shot. It's under new management now (as of Father's Day, June 18, 2017), and it has the same feel as it did as Loving Hut. The waitresses were super friendly and very attentive. The whole place seemed cleaner, and I saw the girls wiping everything down in between helping customers. We had the crispy rolls, onion petals, sriracha burger, cheesesteak, wonton soup, cannoli, red velvet cake and coconut cake and everything was delicious. There was a slight lag between entrees coming out, but not a big deal. The food was great. They used nice fresh rolls on the sandwiches and all the fried goods were crisp and not greasy. I hope business picks back up here, it's so nice to have a local vegan-friendly restaurant. read more

So I was very happy to hear that a vegan place was opening in Matawan..I had a ton of vegan options when I lived closer to the shore but after moving more central I wasn't left with anything. I decided to try this place with my girlfriend on a Friday night and have been back the past 4 weeks since..consensus - it's understaffed and quiet, but the food is excellent and the prices are great for a vegan place. I'm hoping they will eventually hire some more chefs but that's sort of the issue of being a new restaurant, it's difficult to want to fund something when it's not getting much business. Do me a favor and go here: expect slow service (simply for lack of being manned) but also excellent vegan food and a very chill atmosphere. I'd like to start off by saying that this place was amazing when it used to be loving hut, my absolute favorite dish was the Philly cheese steak sub they served. I was very sad when I found out this place was switching owners and menus. Luckily they kept the dish on the menu. When it reopened under the new name, I came to try it out and was pretty disappointed. The food was not as flavorful and I felt like I got a smaller portion than before. I stopped coming for quite a while. I decided to give it another chance today and I'm so glad I did. The sub was amazing! My boyfriend also ordered one of the burgers and it was also delicious. We were frequent diners at Loving Hut so we were excited about the restaurant staying vegan. I'm sorry to say it was extremely disappointing and one of the worst dining experiences I've had. The food was bland and not tasty at all. We were excited to see they kept some of the original menu items and we're thrilled to try the scallion pancakes. They were limp/undercooked and served with no sauce. We asked for the original sauce that was served with it (sweet & sour) and we're given a bowl of soy sauce. I also ate the pineapple fried rice which had little to no pineapple flavor. The other person in our party's food was forgotten about and came very late after we asked where it was. One of the best falafel sandwiches i have ever had. Bread was fresh, light tahini sauce was superb.
