I love the concept of a diner that sells greasy vegetarian/vegan food, so I hate to say that Veggie Galaxy didn't live up to my expectations. As an omnivore that has been slowly trying to transition into vegetarianism, I think this is mostly due to the fact that this was my first exposure to a lot of vegan substitute foods. I ordered the chickpea "tuna" melt as my main course since tuna sandwiches are one of my favorite foods. The sandwich was well made and visually appealing, and I actually really liked the chickpea filling. What threw me off was the Daiya cheese, which had a disturbingly chewy texture since they use tapioca starch in it - it was like eating warm, cheese-flavored mochi. The side potato salad was legitimately delicious. My boyfriend ordered a jackfruit BBQ sandwich sans bun, which was highly recommended by other Yelpers but sadly didn't hit the mark for us either. It is what it is - barbecue flavored jackfruit. If you've never had jackfruit, the texture is similar to artichoke and not vaguely meaty. We also ordered a Taza chocolate cheesecake to share that was pretty good. It had a very impressive vegan merengue, but the cheesecake base itself was a little too tangy. In short, don't come expecting the food to actually taste like non-vegan diner favorites. I legitimately believe they have some great dishes here that we didn't get to try, but I'm just not a fan. As for service and ambience, both are awesome! At the end of the day, don't let this review stop you from coming, as there were a lot of enticing things on the menu that I wish I had ordered instead. read more

When I want to pretend I eat healthy (I swear I do sometimes), I head over to Veggie Galaxy for what tastes like a home cooked meal- if I was actually capable of cooking vegetarian options like them. Seriously, these guys rock my socks. I've tried a good variety of their menu and while some of the meat alternatives aren't quite as good as the real deal, they definitely have earned my respect. The last time I went, I ended up ordering the falafel burger, which was absolutely fantastic. It did fall apart pretty easily, but I'm a messy eater anyways. I also had a strawberry milkshake to match the diner aesthetic and make my taste buds happy. It even came with some coconut milk whipped cream! Came here on a Friday night with my husband and our 18-month-old. We were quickly seated, the restaurant was brimming with happy customers, and our various servers were really nice. I ordered the Rachel which is basically a Reuben with coleslaw (no cheese for me). My husband got one of the veggie burgers. My daughter ate the "meatballs" and pasta. My husband and I shared onion rings as well. The Rachel was delicious! I didn't miss the meat and the seitan was cooked and shaved similar to corned beef. It had a great flavor. I did not taste my husband's veggie burger, but he liked it. I prefer a veggie burger that's a little crispy on the outside and this one didn't look like that to me. My daughter LOVED the "meatballs" which are made in-house. They were really, really good and a little crispy/brown on the outside. She didn't care for the pasta, but the sauce was pretty tasty. My husband and I also ordered dessert (why not?). I got the carrot/sweet potato cake and he got the cheesecake. Both were really delicious and I was pleasantly surprised that the cheesecake actually had a cheesecake taste. My cake was really good, but a bit dense. Tried the Rachel sandwich, per remarks by the newspapers decorating the front wall. The seitan was certainly surprising and definitely caters well towards sandwich lovers. Got the chicken and waffles with seitan that was thick and hard like a brick of just yuck all set atop a spongy waffle which was ok. I got the vegan mac and cheese which came with no panko and very little sauce. Told our server about the missing panko and she brought me a side of cold red panko to sprinkle on top of my already cooked and practically naked Mac and cheese. It could have been we just ordered the worst possible things on the menu but you're definitely not doing any vegans or non-vegans a service with crappy food like this. I can't believe I've never reviewed my favorite restaurant! This is the best vegan restaurant in Massachusetts (even not the East Coast). The classic diner food is relatable and disproves all those "only healthy food" vegan perceptions. It's also nice to bring vegetarians (or meat eaters ;)). They can get their egg or cheese fix, and often dip their toes in our plant-based world. The staff are incredibly friendly and always high energy and highly attentive. The food selection ranges from classic diner to fun and creative. Parking can be a hit or miss, but if I take a car, I always find something. No reservations but the wait times are very reasonable. read more

My organization (usually remote) had an in-person retreat last month and chose Veggie Galaxy to cater one of our breakfasts. Everything from communication to of course food was AMAZING. Everyone raved about it. Among our small but mighty group of 18 staff members, we had vegan staff members photograph their breakfast plates (delighted that they could eat everything), non-vegan staff members rate the cinnamon rolls as one of the highlights of the week, and even a San Francisco-bound staff member carry a full tray of pancakes onto the plane with him as he headed home, because they were too good to let even a single bite go to waste. Everyone loved the onion rings. Worth the extra $$. The vegan mozzarella sticks were reasonable, but very rich and kind of unusual - the marinara was tasty, I didn't like the gyro - the lamb 'meat' was strangely soft and slippery - I didn't enjoy the spicing [I do love the non-vegetarian gyros] bc it was apparently the same exact seitan (?) as the pastrami in the reuben, but slippery. Maybe they need to pan-fry it to dry it out more? I couldn't ear it. Anyway, I loved the tater tots. Fries were decent, well-seasoned. Anything they deep-fry, is delicious. Extremely impressed with the atmosphere, food, and service of Veggie Galaxy (insert cool space noises here) Not your typical diner, VG is modern dining meets old school service. Complete with classic radio, your standard bowling alley tables, and the ding of a bell every time an order is ready, they really embrace the feel of the restaurant. The menu is what really blew me away though. A great array of breakfast, lunch, and dinner choices along with nice dessert options too. I ended up ordering the Chocolate Frapp with a club sandwich and a side of home made chips. A classic meal, all vegan. The frapp was amazing, currently sipping on the last bits of it as I type this. The club was a perfect balance of "meat" and veggies, with a nice pesto to hold it all together. And the chips were classically sliced and seasoned. The sandwiches come with a side salad served underneath as well. My only hesitance was actually the salad. With a light vinaigrette, there's a great opportunity awaiting underneath my sandwich (literally). I'm imagining candied pine nuts or something else a little sweeter to balance out the savory of the chips and sandwich. Yin and Yang. Ya know? I went into veggie galaxy for the first time recently after walking by it so many times. It always looked so busy and exciting, so I was happy to give it a try! I ordered the giant gyro sandwich and was deeply disappointed. The flavor was dry, bland, and overall nonexistent. It felt like they'd just put a hunk of seitan on a piece of bread and sprinkled some salt and pepper -- not much more skill than myself in the kitchen with less than 5 min to spare. March 2017 update: Last week a friend talked me into going into Veggie Galaxy to grab some dessert. "They've gotten better lately," he told me. NO. We walked in to a less than half full restaurant and proceeded to wait nearly 10 minutes to be acknowledged and seated. Did I mention the place was less than half full? And yet LIKE ALWAYS, we were seated in the back at one of the tiny little tables, crammed in between 2 other parties. After waiting another 10 minutes to be acknowledged by our waiter (he was very busy talking to the other waiters behind the counter), we ordered an ice cream sundae. Now, I'm not a professional chef, but I'm pretty good at following instructions. The menu describes the sundae as having ice cream, hot fudge and whipped cream. So, we assumed our sundae would appear with ice cream, hot fudge and whipped topping. Seems pretty reasonable doesn't it? NO. A person that was not our waiter rushed passed our table, slamming down a bowl of vegan ice cream and hot fudge and was gone before either of us could even look down to see that there was no whipped cream on top. Sadly, we had to interrupt our waiter who was very busy checking his hair in the mirror. When we asked him for whipped cream, he gave us a sort of incredulous look and repeated the request as though we had just asked for tartar sauce or something.... The GOOD thing about this recent visit to veggie galaxy was that the ice cream had an odd sort of after-taste and it wasn't creamy like it usually is. Why is that good? Because now I will NEVER have to feel as though I am missing out on something good at VG because, unless the restaurant gets sold and changes out every single employee and their entire business model, I am NEVER going back there again. #### I've been struggling with whether or not to publish this review since my last 2 visits to Veggie Galaxy (about a month ago), but after my visit this morning I'm going to post. VG used to be one of my favorite places; just thinking about the mid-century style glass case of vegan desserts made me smile. But something has changed and it becomes more and more evident on every visit. The once friendly staff is unpleasant, inattentive, and often just downright rude. The service is extremely slow and the once amazing vegan food is no longer amazing. The most obvious difference, though, you'll notice as soon as you walk in the door. The diner will be only 3/4 full - the counter completely empty - and yet the wait time will be 45 minutes, even without a full crowd in the waiting area. On my most recent visit, we waited nearly an hour even though the restaurant was never more than 3/4 full. When we finally got seated, we were walked past the empty counter and past an empty mini-booth (which we were told was "reserved" when we asked if we could sit in it) down to the back to one of the tiny tables wedged in between two already seated parties. Then we waited... And waited... And finally ordered. Then ate our less than spectacular food but ordered dessert because, let's face it, where else can you find such a large variety of vegan desserts? Then we waited... And waited... Then our waitress dropped off dessert and immediately disappeared before we could even tell her it was the wrong dessert! We were heading to a movie so I didn't make a big fuss. I had to walk up front to get our check, paid it and left (yea, we still left a tip) This was not the Veggie Galaxy I remember and it makes me sad because it used to be such a fun place to go :( Addendum: Repeat performance on today's visit. Finally we just asked why we couldn't grab 2 empty seats at the counter and were told they weren't "set up" yet. The counter was clean, but apparently putting down the napkin and flatware was a lengthy process? Who knows? Again we were seated way back squished between 2 already seated parties even though there was an empty (and by then, set up) counter as well as 2 open mini-booths. So, we just got up and left. Not worth it. Going out to breakfast should be a good experience. Isn't that the whole point of going out? read more

I love to try a one of everything if possible with my best friend lol. We got the stuffed French toast, mozzarella sticks, Buffalo chick'n strips, & the Mac stack with fries. Everything was fantastic. The Mac stack was the least disappointing because it was hard to eat and tasted like a greasy sandwich and didn't stick out like the others did. The flavor felt diminished by the greasiness on everything. The onion rings had no onion taste and basically just tasted fried. I ordered delivery so I have no comment on the service or ambiance. The southwestern burrito had many ingredients but I couldn't taste anything besides the jalapeños and the seitan. The jalapeños were very vinegar-y, and the seitan wasn't well cooked. They forgot to put avocado on my burrito, and the fries and eggs were tasteless. Having such a large array of vegan options seems great, but overall just lackluster. Back in Boston for the second time in 3 months and I'm not sure how we missed Veggie Galaxy in November (See Friendly Toast review). We usually do a fairly diligent search for vegetarian/vegan places to eat when we travel. My partner and I ate here twice in 3 days to make up for missing it the first time through. Between the two of us we had: two orders of Poutine (FANTASTIC), two Ruebens (VERY TASTY), "Steak" and Cheese Sub (EXCELLENT), and a Buffalo Chick'n Burger (REALLY GOOD). We also had some Slaw (loved it) and house potato chips (NICE and CRISPY). Service was very good both visits. Fast. Attentive. Attractive. AND it was busy!! We had a low booth on one visit and a high booth on the other visit. Both seating arrangements were good. The table for two had plenty of room for our food and drinks (which came with paper straws). We will not miss an opportunity to visit again if we should ever find ourselves in the Boston area. read more

I've been on tour for almost 3 weeks and played next door at the Middle East. Veggie Galaxy was the best vegan/vegetarian food I've had while gone from home. The manager was unbelievably cool and helpful, staff was very very friendly, and the diner feel of the restaurant made it a very cozy setting to be in. The food is good enough that most of the time I don't mind how heavy/oily it is. Though I will say that I've learned that stuffing myself at Veggie Galaxy, however tempting, is not a good idea.
