I really wanted to like this place. The reviews on here and Google were really good! This salon is cute and cozy on the inside. I loved the atmosphere. I also like that it's located in Roselle not too far from some of the local shops. Making a reservation: It was really easy when I called. I explained I would be a new client and I just wanted to get a haircut to trim the split ends, nothing crazy. They booked me for a Saturday at 3. I got a call the day of and they were wondering if I could do a 2 or 2:15 because it worked better for the stylist, which was fine because that actually worked better for me. I agreed to 2:15. They did reassure me that if I wanted to keep the appointment at 3, that I certainly could. The haircut: I don't really want to name the girl who did my hair on here because this would be embarrassing for her. She was a nice person, but has no idea how to cut hair. I'm sorry. My left side is longer than my right side. Even my friends notice it. I didn't even notice until I got home and got a closer look. I'm not sure how a stylist can miss something like that. You can see it's uneven if you're looking at my hair from the back (it's very noticeable- right side is shorter), or if I pull my hair in front of me(you can see the difference in length). I'm going somewhere else to get it corrected. I should have requested Aly because she has raving reviews on here. If I were to give this salon another try, I would ask for her based on the reviews. For reference, I have long, medium-thick hair past my shoulders. Update: I'm in the process of getting my hair fixed and my layers were also all over the place in length. I've been coming here for years to get my hair done and I've always been happy with how it turns out. Little Mel has always been able to get my hair color and cut the way I like it. I've gotten manis/pedis, waxing, and facials here as well and it's just an overall good experience. The atmosphere is relaxing; the staff is always welcoming and friendly. It's really the perfect place for a little spa day for yourself . I've also had them do my wedding hair and make up, as well as my bridal party and it was such a smooth experience. My well trained hairdresser of Twenty years moved on to a less physical job, leaving me look like roadkill 3 months of her being gone. So , I went looking for a new stylist, I moved from place to place, sometimes went back, but never a third time. I like my hair short and spiky, yet these stylist kept giving me the old Justin Beaver (whatever his name is) hairstyle! ug. So, Velarde was one of the last places on my list to hit that was within my 7 mile radius. First cut was good, but that's just 1 cut. MANY cuts later and I am still at this salon! My gal, Little Mel, she is wonderful and I'm not sharing her! I suffer from depression, but going to see her really lifts me up. She's happy, spunky and most of all gives me the cut I want AND cuts it correctly. I found the whole atmosphere of this salon was invigorating and I come out looking like a star. I have never had a more horrific or stressful experience with any service than at Velarde. I went in for a bleach/dye of a deep, vibrant purple. I saw Michelle, who had cut my hair once before. She has been doing hair as long as I've been alive so I trusted her. I trusted her when I pointed out a big chunk of my hair wasn't bleaching like the rest, I trusted her when she said "don't peak" and blow dried my hair. She turned me around and revealed a hot pink/magenta root with silver length (because I had asked for lilac on the TIPS. I had never even had a bad haircut before, so I meekly asked her to make it darker and bring it down. She ended up giving me a minor chemical burn and my hair wasn't evenly dyed. I fought tears through the second go through, not really trusting anyone to touch me now. It came out hot pink, which I hated. Because I am a server, I felt an obligation to still tip, so I paid $120 plus tip and left defeated. After trying to let it grow on me, I decided: "This is not what I wanted, it was not done well, they need to fix it". I called and explained what had happened and they said they would fix it for free, which I think was the least they could do. They put me with a different stylist and had me email the pictures I wanted and pictures of my hair. I went in two weeks after the first appointment to let my scalp heal. Right off the bat, the new stylist seemed over it. She probably assumed I wouldn't tip but I was more than prepared to pay her if she could fix it. They hadn't shown her the pictures, they didn't have a game plan to fix it. When I showed her the picture she told me that it was a hard color to do in the first place, especially on dyed hair (I had virgin hair the first go through). She said "I can't do this with what you're bringing me." as if I had destroyed it at home, not had it butchered in their salon. At this point I became uncomfortable with the inconsistent answers and reasoning so I said I would like a refund instead as I didn't trust anyone in the salon now. It took another two weeks of calling and being blamed by the salon to eventually get my money back. Every single person I know that does hair pointed out the completely unprofessional job they had done to my hair. In the end, they admitted that they were out of the color they were supposed to use but didn't tell me and she did the job anyways. It's one thing to get the color wrong but it didn't even look good. I urge you to proceed with caution if you try this salon. read more

I had a mani pedi with Kristy and it was a great experience. She is very nice and very throrough. I got a no chip mani and I feel like it is the best one I have had, my nails feel so smooth and look so good. Everyone that works at the salon are very nice and attentive. They call themselves a salon yet it's a hassle to book an appointment. I was a new client and had to reschedule. I explained which specific services I wanted, and that it was slightly different from what was booked, reminding her I needed an afternoon or evening appointment, and asked her to call me back. The receptionist said she could do it "right now" and then proceeded to talk through what she was doing (you can have this here but then that wouldn't work etc). And she was getting it wrong, repeatedly. After the FIFTH read-back it was correct. I again asked her to call me back when all done. Again she started to talk through what she was thinking. Yet again I said that I needed to go and to please call later. She called back. Three times. I have voice mail set-up. No messages were left. When I looked at the emailed itinerary, the appointment time was 11:00 AM. As in, before noon. The next day I called and asked to speak with the owner, who had scheduled my initial appointment. I was hoping she and I could sort it out. The receptionist, Haley, same one as yesterday, offered to take a message. I explained the morning time doesn't work for me. Haley said "well I consider 11 as afternoon..." I laughed, it was so absurd (especially after yesterday's interaction). Haley just kept talking making no sense and I asked her to stop. She just rambled on and again I asked her to take a breath. She continued to ramble about if we do this here then that wouldn't work. I emailed the owner to inform her of my experience. She replied with a cursory sorry. Not a good first impression. I will not go there. read more

I wish to give negative star. It was our mistake that we assumed time at 3 PM instead of 2:30 PM. However, we planned to reach 15 mins early at 2:45 PM. I called salon at 2:42 PM we are on our way and will reach any moment. Owner reaction, " your time was 2:30 PM, she is 15 minute late, we can't take her. Talk to Groupon and take your refund. Thanks to you, now my stylist will be free for 1 hour." This is how you treat your customer ? I was feeling that we did crime to come late 15 mins in your salon. Owner is so rude and pathetic. If a person doesn't have etiquettes to talk, what kind of service you can expect. PS: if you have groupon, don't try to go there. It seems owner treats very bad to groupon customers. I came into the salon expecting to come out with a new hairstylist but ended up disappointed. I made my appointment with the intentions of getting a new haircut and the option to change the color of my hair but instead walked out with just a haircut and feeling like I was being rushed off the chair. I came in prepared with how I wanted my hair with several pictures and kept asking for volume but no matter how many times she cut my layers my hair laid flat. As soon as I had enough of her cutting my hair I gave a vague impression, thanked her, paid for the service and walked out. Before I walked out her next client walked in so my feeling of being rushed out was true. Don't overbook yourself if you can't handle a new client. I will never return to this salon. read more

So I've been going here for ages because I have thick hair that is a true PITA, but Michelle makes me feel like a rock star EVERY.SINGLE VISIT! I've had brown, brownish, fire engine red, and now blonde and love, love, love it! This place will transform you from feeling meh to fabulous in a few hours with their magic hands. I have recommended this business to many of my friends and colleagues. It's beyond disappointing and disheartening to come to this end. I have been going to Velarde salon for many years. I will never forget the day that the owner found out that I was getting ready to go on our sons Make a Wish trip. She comped all my services that day. Ever since then I transferred all of my Services to the girls at the salon. I felt like family there. When one of the stylists went on maternity leave and came back on a limited schedule I felt like I had lost someone close to me when I had to transfer to someone else to get my hair done. They know me and my family very well. The last day I visited the salon I walked into the salon and no one was wearing masks except for me. At first I thought maybe I missed a special announcement from the governor stating that the mask mandate had been lifted. I asked my stylist what was going on and she offered to wear a mask. She stated that in Illinois she understood that it was now up to each individual business in regards to enforcing the mask mandate. One by one the employees that I have come to know so well walked in and nobody had a mask on. I left after my sevices with a knot in my stomach. I spoke to the owner of the salon today who I respect tremendously. She said we live in a 50-50 society at this point. 50% of us wear and believe in masks and the other 50% feel that because they have been vaccinated they should not have to wear them. She also added that 50% of her employees do not wish to wear masks. So in the best interest of her business they are no longer requiring masks. I explain to her that forces me to make a very hard decision as I must protect my son who has special needs and is also a client at the salon. She apologized but stated this decision was necessary for the business and it's employees. So as of this week my family is no longer a client at Velarde salon. I feel like I have lost a family member and I'm heartbroken. The hits keep coming with this pandemic. All I can do is keep treading water and hope that we come out on the other side, better than we are today. read more

Great place for cut and color. I was visiting from out of town and needed AVEDA service asap. They fit me in, cut and color was pricey however. Over $200 but in the end it is worth it for me since I tend to wait too long between professional service. I have massive curly hair so Im used to spending a lot. This one star rating is based entirely on my customer service experience with Velarde and a not at all on my salon experience. That said, I purchased a groupon in December for salon services for my mom and I to go together as a christmas gift. We kept trying to schedule services at the same time and they kept saying that they were too booked - we tried this for about 2 months and called 4-5 times. Finally someone on the phone explained to me that they only have one spa services room, so two people cannot get services (like 2 massages) at once. So my mom and I decided to split up and each just go on our own. I know she called a number of times to try and get an appointment - but she could only ever book it about a week in advance because of not knowing her work schedule farther ahead than that. She was not able to get an appointment until September for two spa services back to back- when she had been trying every couple of weeks for MONTHS. I also have been trying pretty frequently to schedule my two services - although I have a much smaller time window than her (I can only get services in the evenings because of work) and I still have not been able to make an appointment. I called today with a last ditch attempt to get an appointment before my groupon expires on the 27th and they tell me they are booked solid until then. I politely asked if they would please extend my groupon a couple more weeks so that I could get an appointment and the manager I spoke with said they would not extend groupons. She also said that she would not refund my groupon. So now I am out $50 with nothing to show for it. Their complete lack of customer service was a big mistake because if I had liked the salon, I would likely have been a repeat customer. read more

Super cute, chic and trendy place! But - the service I received was not the greatest. I was in a pinch and needed to get my eyelash extensions filled in - stat!! I had heard Velarde offered the service, and they were able to get me in right away. The girl who applied them did a decent job. She was very nice and sweet, but I could tell she was new - I should have known right then and there to run the other way. But, I figured it would be good enough until I could get in with the girl who does an amazing job (Yes, I go somewhere else). Here's where the problem came in to play...after 2 days they all started to fall off. Really?!? They've always lasted way long than that! When I called her to tell her what happened, she was very apologetic and told me to come in right away and she would fix them for me. I went in the next day and had them touched up. Do you know what happened 2 days later?? They fell off - AGAIN. This time, the answer I received was that some client's eyelashes just don't respond well with the adhesive. Ummm, I could see that being true, if they were using Elmer's glue. Needless to say I was less than pleased. When I finally got an appointment with my regular girl she said Velarde did a crap job - it looked like they were put on by a beginner student and they used inexpensive products. Ooops - looks like I won't be straying from my regular girl again! I will say, the staff is very friendly and accommodating. I would definitely give them another chance with a pedicure, facial or a trim on my hair. However, if you're looking for eyelash extensions - I'd look elsewhere. read more

I found this salon via Groupon and arrived with one in hand. The salon was easy to find and there is free 2-hour parking right in front. I loved the warm decor- the salon is clean and looks brand new. The trouble I keep coming across with Groupon is that rarely ever would I actually want to pay full price for the services received. This was not the case here. First, prices are reasonable to begin with. Everyone is very pleasant, accommodating and wants you to feel comfortable. I was late to my appointment and they worked with me, so that I did not have to spend a minute waiting. The services are not run of the mill and incorporate that little extra. For example, my massage came with aromatherapy and the pedicure included a paraffin dip. I thought that the massage I received today was very good. I asked for deep pressure and that is exactly what I got. The massage bed was heated and the therapist, Sherri, used warm towels on my back. She also asked me for my preference in terms of the scent of the essential oils she used. Most places do not include all of these things in a standard 30-minute massage. My pedicure was wonderful, also. Again, very reasonable in terms of price. I am used to paying $55+ for a pedicure at my "regular" spa and it does not include all the bells and whistles (scrub, mask, paraffin). They have a nice selection of nail polishes (OPI, Essie and one more line I do not recall) and what appear to be brand new massage chairs. Mel did a great job and spent quite a bit of time on my feet. I would definitely return. I was very happy with my mini spa day today. read more
