I had my daughter's 25th birthday party at Velvet on Saturday March 16th. What a gorgeous space! Beautifully decorated with a sophisticated style! Very unique! I was very excited to have found this space! Overall my experience at velvet was ok except we were rushed out. Don't expect customer service that goes above and beyond like some people have said. My experience was not what I expected. 3 weeks before my party, I called Phil (the owner) to ask about some technical details regarding the slide show projector. I also asked Phil if he would mind if I bring a Special Limited Edition bottle of Chandon champagne I had brought back from my recent trip to Argentina (I visited the vineyard in Mendoza, Argentina) since I was paying for open bar he said, "sure, but I'm gonna charge you $100 to use the projector". He sounded surprisingly annoyed, like I was bothering him. I was a bit confused because not only I was verbally told the projector was part of the rental package it was clearly written in the contract I had signed. I challenged him on the issue then he suddenly and abruptly said "I'm very busy right now" then just abruptly hung up the phone on me. I was not only offended but totally confused. I have no idea what brought this on. So I immediately called him back but of course he did not answer. He never spoke to me again. Being my event was only 3 weeks away I was unable to find another venue. The day of my event went ok. I have had many parties at various places in Brooklyn and my experience at Velvet was lackluster in comparison! I was told that I would have a host help me during my event. Well, yes Josh was there the whole night but it felt like he was only there for show....We had some difficulty trying to find an outlet near our food table for a crockpot, I asked Josh for help, all he said was, " there is no outlet on that wall..."no suggestion, no other ideas or options, he just walked away. Luckily being a very experienced party planner, I had an extension cord. I was able to crawl around in the dark and eventually found an outlet in the sound room. These little details can make a big difference, like a simple thing like Josh did not make us aware that he had a coat check, so there was an unsightly pile of coats. After I asked Josh he told me he had coat check my guests could use. Later in the night the band we hired was playing when suddenly the power went out on their equipment . I guess there was a power surge and the circuit was tripped. Josh offered no solution instead he just told us we had too many things plugged in and he walked away. Now, to be clear, when we did our walk through a few days before the party, HE told us where the band should be and where we should plug in the chocolate fountain. Josh knew all this before the party, so I think he would know the capacity. He did reset circuit breaker. Even though these minor issues were annoying so far honestly I was still happy and ok with how the party was going. The part that pushed me to disappointment was what happened later. My contract stated my event time was "8pm to 12am. With 1 hour prior for setup(7pm)." So around 11:00/11:15pm, Josh told me I had to pack up up my buffet table. I was totally shocked! I reminded him that I paid for event time till 12. He told me at 12 the back room would be open to the public. He was right, at 12, my event time would be up, the only problem was that it was barely past 11. I still had at least 45 mins of event time. The real problem was that Velvet wanted to use my event time for their setup time. Instead of saying your rental time is up at 12 and allow 30mins (or whatever time they need) to reset the place and have it ready for the public at 12:30. I would have been ok even if they contracted my time to end at 11:30 then they would have time for their setup. But they did not make that clear. Instead my party was interrupted! After much persistence and my expressed disappointment to Josh he retreated, then told me I could leave the food out for my guests! By then my party was already disrupted! I didn't have a problem with starting to pack up early as long as we were able to leave the food out for my guests. In the end Josh did apologize and later after all my stuff was cleared out of the back room, Josh offered my daughter and her friend a bottle of Prosecco for the inconvenience. By then the damage was already done and I had a bad taste in my mouth. Overall it was poor cust svc & unprofessional! I have never heard an owner hanging up on a paying cust! I have never seen a host not offer suggestion to solve problems during a party. Ultimately my party did go well and my guests had a good time, but the last 45mins was very stressful!! So if you decide to have a party at Velvet, just be prepared that they will start breaking down your party 45mins early. They will use your event time to setup/ reset the place for their next event and they don't explain that to you prior to your event. read more

We had a Groupon for a whiskey tasting at this establishment. Delivered on it in my opinion. For 79 dollars, we received a whiskey tasting for two with a cheese platter and two cigars. The bar was completely empty when we arrived, and only one or two other patrons came through. It was relatively early, but on a weekend night, I figured there would be a few more people. The decor was somewhat dreary, the atmosphere was dark. Sort of Elvira's castle-esque. We had a taste of four different Johnny Walker whiskeys, Black, Gold, Green, and Blue. We were given ice cold water to cleanse with, and the whiskey was rather nice. Afterwards, we were given two cigars and went outside in a heated lamp environment to enjoy them. All told, the price was somewhat steep for this type of deal, but it was a really nice experience. I would visit the Velvet Lounge again if I was in town, for a drink and a cigar. Then, I'd probably go find something else to do. read more

The whole process was smooth and seamless, and Lily - the events coordinator - was phenomenal. They met our every request, the bartenders were skilled and courteous, the space was set up beautifully to our exact specifications, and the price was very reasonable. I've been to this bar a few times and had the best time recently when I met Jessica. The place is very intimate with a beautiful lounge in the back and the menu of food is perfect -- small snacks that are complemented by a full bar. This was the worst bar experience I have ever had and I had to pay $51.00 for 3 drinks. It was about 5:30 on a thursday afternoon and the place was empty (surprising since it is such a beautiful space) except for single male customer and the bartender talking to him. I walked in, sat at the bar and she walked over and asked me what I wanted. I ordered a Woodford reserve bourbon, up chilled with a cherry. She made my drink poured it in a martini glass (not the big ones)... pouring way below the rim of the glass and almost ran back to her conversation with the guy at the bar. Soon after my friend walked in and sat beside me at the bar. We both looked the short distance down the bar at the bartender who was facing us hoping she would take my friends order. She continued with her conversation for at least 5 minutes until my friend slightly exasperated said "Excuse me". She sauntered over obviously annoyed and asked what she wanted. She quickly poured her drink and returned to her conversation. I ordered one more of the same (woodford and cherry) before leaving and then asked for the check.. I was shocked!!! there was a charge of $14.00 for each of my woodford reserve drinks + an extra charge of $2.00 labeled a "man up charge" I asked her if she could explain the charge. She said it was added because I ordered an "up" drink making my unfilled bourbon drink a total of $16.00/each. Bringing the final total of my bill to $32 for 2 unfilled bourbon drinks + whatever the cost was my friends "Rum and Coke" to a total of 43.55. After the $8 tip a grand total of $51.00. In retrospect, she definitely didn't deserve the generous tip I left, I was caught so off guard by the cost and her audacity I just wanted to leave. Now I know why the place is always empty!!! A pretty bar but a bit confusing and misleading. I believe they give they impression that this is a cigar lounge and if i am not mistaken, when they intitially opened, this is how they advertised themselves. They sell cigars, but do not be fooled, you cannot smoke cigars in the Velvet Lounge. Do not get this place confused with the Velevet Lounge in lower Manhattan, where you can in fact smoke cigars. It is hard enough for a cigar smoker to find a decent place to sit and smoke a cigar in peace without someone looking at you like you are evil incarnate. It doesnt help that some joint is pretending to be a cigar lounge and then when you get there they tell you that you can smoke on a wooden bench in a 3 ft by 3ft velvet roped off area out on the sidewalk! Its a quiet place, out of the way and over priced..there is really no need to go there. read more

So this review is super late, but I owe it Velvet Lounge to make sure I write one. I had my 29th birthday at the Velvet Lounge and rented their private back room. The theme of my party was a Masquerade Ball. The decor and feel of Velvet Lounge was perfect for the theme. Mood lighting, exposed brick wall, and a beautiful red tufted couch in the back really helped to create the sultry, sexy atmosphere I was going for. There was no decoration needed. The back room was also a perfect space for the 60 guests I had. Enough space to dance and a good amount of seating. The back room also has its own bar. Phil, the owner and Yannis, the manager were delightful to work with. Very responsive and super helpful. I am a pole fitness instructor and wanted to perform as a part of the party. The Velvet Lounge team had never put up a pole in their venue, but were open to the idea and went above and beyond to put the pole up for me and make sure it was secure. They even allowed me to come in a few days before to test it. I also brought in a cake and some treats that I put on display at the beginning of the party. Velvet Lounge provided the table and a nice table cloth. They also provided a table for the DJ equipment. Overall, the party was epic and everything went perfectly! I definitely have Velvet Lounge and their entire staff for helping to bring my vision to life! read more

The night of, Josh and his team were amazing and anything we needed they were able to provide at the drop of a dime. The bartender & the young lady who assisted him (I am afraid I didn't catch their names) were incredibly helpful. I would recommend using their private room in the rear it was cozy and elegant. This used to be a cigar bar, but due to whatever laws, it eventually turned into a "buy a cigar inside and smoke outside" bar, and now appears to just be a non-cigar bar. This part of the 'burg seems to be taking awhile to gentrify. You have Dressler across the street and Peter Luger next door, but for the most part this area is still a bit of a wasteland. Anyway, the sole point of Velvet seems to be as a pre-dinner place as you wait for your table at Dressler and Lugers (though last time I was at dressler they pretended to always be packed but weren't), or a post-dinner nightcap. Enjoyed some excellent old port here. It is what it is.. anywhere else this would probably be a very popular spot, but the location hurts a bit. read more

The bar was empty on a Friday night around 8pm which surprised us because we didn't notice anything wrong with the place. The bartender was new that night, she was very nice and made great cocktails. We rented out the entire space--front and back--and it was great for that number of people, and a nice layout (just renting the back would be awesome for smaller parties). We pretty much decided to go with Velvet on the spot because it's such a great-looking venue and because the owner, Phil, was so nice. I love the red velvety vibe there and we didn't do a single thing extra to decorate. We recently had a surprise birthday party for my wife in the private room at Velvet Lounge. It was a masquerade theme and the venue was absolutely perfect! The rustic walls, elegant mirrors and warm decor provided everything we needed for the party. The room was a perfect size for the 50 guests that attended. There was plenty of room for eating, mingling and dancing. The party was scheduled to end at midnight but folks did not want to leave! Phil, the owner and manager, was an absolute pleasure to work with. He was very accommodating and extremely flexible while customizing the event for my wife. We recently stayed at an AirBnB and were lucky to find Velvet Brooklyn in the same loft building and next door to the famous Peter Luger steak house. The location is in an historical brick building with very tall ceilings and a romantic atmosphere. The live entertainment is top notch, from a live jazz gig to a Burlesque show that was quite the fun experience. Definitely recommended and we'll be back next time we go to NYC. I'm from Texas and tried going next door for a steak dinner "didn't have reservations could get in". I went for a drink to figure out my next move for the night ended up staying a few hours. The manager and bartender where great and had plenty of suggestions on places to go. The drinks where all a heavy poor and right for the price. Though it was empty, they were still blasting bad techno music so loud that my girlfriends and I could hardly hear each another. It's like a frat bar for old bald men...
