A special family occasion called for a special dinner out and when in Muncie Indiana, there is only one place to go. Vera Mae's! I've previously written about VM's so I won't go on but suffice to say our party of 7 had a wonderful evening, tremendous food and even live piano music adjacent to our table to add a special touch to an already great night. I thoroughly enjoyed the NY Strip steak, perfectly cooked, juicy and tender. The majority of our party went with the Lobster Stuffed Ravioli and they all raved about it. Well. It was like a scene from the movie "A Christmas Story". A picturesque atmosphere where we were surrounded by a cozy, warm, inviting setting as a freak snow storm raged over us. As we sat inside listening to live piano, we were staying plenty warm from the staff, the drinks, and the mouthwatering appetizers. It was quite the perfect evening. And at the end when we requested a dessert dish that wasn't on the menu, right away they accommodated us. Definitely my top dinning experience here ever in Muncie. Love this place with a capital. L. Might make the trip back to this town just to eat here again and to try something else all over again. Had the roasted duck and it was fantastic. Went for a celebratory night and found the atmosphere to be very off putting and odd. We were the only ones there on a Saturday night. Service was okay, though we did hear our server yell the f bomb multiple times from the other side of the restaurant. I ordered the Chicken Brie Raspberry and honestly it was disgusting. Sent it back and our server took it off the bill luckily. I got the key lime martini and it was not good either. The texture was very off putting. The bread they bring to the table is Sister Schuberts rolls which come from the freezer isle at any grocery store. All in all, we had very high hopes for our night and were severely disappointed. Upon arrival, the host offered us several different seating areas and was so attentive to our desires. The meal started out so lovely! Delightful host and server: we began our meal with the French onion soup. Still had to decide on entrees, but it was never rushed! Soup was great! Entrees were a bit of a disappointment, all sides were cold, and my sister's meal was a disaster. Her steak was ordered medium rare, and a medium well steak was served with cold sides. When she tried to return the meal to the kitchen for what she ordered, the host said leave the dish here, and had her cut into the middle of the strip steak. It was STILL medium well. He said more like medium, ummmm she ordered it medium rare. My chicken was piping hot, and he returned with hot green beans that were parcooked. When he came to the table with hot potatoes he was surprised by the lack of a dish with the improperly cooked food. The gentleman then reamed our server out for removing the dish! A new entree was prepared for my sister, but I had already completed my meal. She had said forget it, please return the food, because it took 20 minutes, and immediately a new dish was presented to the table. She had it bagged to take with us. It was a great disappointment to have seen the host berate our server, she did not improperly prepare the meal, he should have gone to the kitchen and handled it there. Not within ear and eye shot of us. I thought the food was wonderful, ambiance excellent, but this display of poor leadership soured my intent of ever returning. We love this place. It is a special treat to come here when visiting our daughter at BSU. The ambiance is great and the service is top notch. The cocktails are fabulous and the french onion soup is hands down the best I have ever had. HOWEVER, they cannot cook chicken breast. I think we've tried all of the chicken on the menu and it is always overcooked, dry with zero flavor. It's like chewing leather. The chef needs to learn how to not overcook chicken. There should also be some quality control here as well. Don't serve bad food. Sure, we will be back but the entrees always seem to disappoint. Random trip and I find myself at Vera Maes ONLY because I saw reviews on how good their Quiche was! I love quiche and very few places make it anymore! So the service was Spectacular (For me)! The French Onion Soup was traditional and Perfect! I'm giving 4 stars because of the Quiche! Don't get me wrong, the crust was flaky, the eggs light and fluffy and it tasted yummy! At first I thought it had too much spinach but truly it was the perfect amount! But the size was so Small! The lady who served me was also disappointed in the size, so she offered to get me a little more, which ended up being another piece the same size! And although that was very generous of her, another patron at my table received the same size piece but was not offered the same, so I felt awkward that here I have two pieces (one went home but let's face it didn't make it that far) and she still had such a small piece! If you notice in my photo, the biggest part of my quiche was no bigger than my fork. Other than that, it was an enjoyable trip! read more

I love Vera Mae's. It is the only real fine dining option in Muncie. It is one of the only places suitable to take customers or business associates. The food is always well prepared and there are plenty of options for every palate. They have good specials and the best stocked bar around. If you are looking for recommendations I would suggest the French onion soup and the bread pudding. Both are incredible. What you get between those two is up to your taste! read more

Vera Mae's is easily the best fine dining restaurant in Muncie. I like the way the inside is decorated-- reclaimed old building with interesting artwork. I think maybe the best way to enjoy this place is by having cocktails & sampling around the menu-- maybe order a couple of appetizers, split an entree, and have dessert. The reason is the Vera Mae's has many wonderful appetizers like their French onion soup or diver scallops, their cocktails are strong, craft-mixed, and their desserts like the bourbon ball & whiskey bread pudding are decadent. I've been debating about writing this review but hoping it will help. If you are the owner please take this as constructive criticism. Vera Mae has so much potential and could be so much better, its a great space but could use some updating inside. Smells old like your grandmas house. The booth I sat at you could tell was old and didn't seem like it had been clean in a while and wasn't very comfortable... I came in for my birthday dinner and I was excited to try Vera Mae (my husband and I just moved to the area). Unfortunately I was very disappointed in the food. Our server was kind and did a great job. We got the charcuterie board and there was not many good cheeses on the board, one smelt like bad body odor (I understand cheeses are like this but not sure why you would want this particular cheese on your board) the meat tasted old. We also ordered the shrimp cocktail and oh my god, the shrimp was nasty, rubber-y and smelt disgusting! obviously it was old frozen shrimp. I ordered the Chicken Brie Raspberry dish and wow the chicken was so dry, it was so difficult to cut, when I was cutting I was struggling to cut a piece off and I flung food on the floor by accident because I was struggling to cut a piece from the chicken breast. Not much brie was on my dish and was unsure about the raspberry jam on top, tasted like jam from the store, not fresh. I can tell by when we were there that a lot of "usuals" come in and the owner seems to have a great relationship with the repeating customers. Again I wish I could come in and give this place a good clean and a makeover and maybe reevaluate the menu and order some fresh food for your kitchen. Fantastic little restaurant. Everything we ordered was amazing. We had the crab and artichoke dip to start. Ooey gooey goodness! The French onion soup did not let down. It was very hearty. My wife and I celebrated our 12 wedding anniversary at Vera Mae's last night and everything was absolutely perfect. While some in the reviews have called the decor odd, I see the exact opposite. It's warm, inviting, classic, with lots of quirky kitschy-ness. If you don't think a warthog mounted above the fireplace with horned-rimmed glass slide down his nose and other stylish accoutrement is awesome, then I feel sorry for you. Our server, Helen, made sure we wanted for nothing. Everything was perfectly timed, suggested, cared for. Even the owners removed our plates at different times before courses. As soon as I noticed I needed a little more iced tea, someone was there. Their service is some of the best I've ever seen. Always present, but not pushy. We started with the brie which had sun-dried tomatoes, a drizzle of honey, and warm, buttery naan bread. It was wonderful. Warm, sweet, tart, buttery... a perfect start. We both had house salads with homemade blue cheese dressing and crumbles. Salad was presented nicely and the blue cheese was REAL unlike a lot of places. The rolls they served with GOOD butter were surprisingly good as well. Buttery and soft. My wife ordered the fillet mignon with blue cheese and crispy pork jowl. Also came with really good mashed potatoes and perfectly cooked, fresh green beans. Presentation was what you would expect from a fine-dining establishment and the taste was wonderful. Steak was cooked perfectly, blue cheese very creamy, and the pork jowl crispy... all the textures worked together perfectly. I ordered the NY strip with horseradish bearnaise also with mashed potatoes and green beans and was blown away. Very rarely does a place cook a steak properly (I'm a steak snob) and someone in the kitchen knows what they're doing. The side fat was perfectly rendered with pan juices, crispy and succulent. Steak was well seasoned, and the bearnaise was out of this world good. It was easily one of the top 5 steak meals I've ever had. We finished with a triple-chocolate ganache something (lost the name of it) and the house-made pecan pie. Both were exceptional, rich, and a perfect end to our meal. We had never been to Vera Mae's before, having frequented the Barn Brasserie many times before it closed. We found our new special place in Muncie! read more

Vera Mae's is wonderful! I've been there several times, and each time, I have had wonderful service and quality food. The first time I went, I enjoyed the turkey tomato focaccia sandwhich. It was delish. This latest visit was exquisite. We enjoyed french onion soup with a thick layer of delicious cheese on top. The server even brought us scissors to cut through the thick yummy goodness of the torched cheese. My main entre was the Lamb Burger. It was served on a square pita "bun" and covered in a chunky tzatziki sauce and crumbled feta. We were planning on sampling one of their decadent desserts, but by the end, we were stuffed! The option I was eyeing included cheesecake wontons. Next time, I'll definitely have to save room for dessert. The servers were courteous and prompt. They attended our needs well but without hovering obnoxiously. The atmosphere is quite high-end for the Muncie area, but the prices are very reasonable. We were so excited to try Vera Mae's in downtown Muncie. For 5 long years we've been looking for a decent place to eat dinner and finally found this place. Unfortunately, it did not live up to our expectations. Wait staff was very casual, dining room was VERY loud. Appetizers were ok, a bit sparse on the toast points. Serving French Onion soup with a tiny pair of scissors to cut the cheese was clever. Their poppy seed dressing was very good. But the thing that put us off were the entrees. I had the salmon, totally over cooked and hard. NY strip steak was very fatty and not prepared as asked--simply not worth the money. And the veal chop was tough which is unfortunate given the cost. The one decent thing in Vera Mae's was the drink prices. So often the booze is waaaay over priced (yes, I know this is how they make their money) but here it was reasonable. I think they try but it just was not the rave place to go that the reviews here led us to believe. We were disappointed and won't go back. Muncie doesn't have the largest selection of unique places to eat. Vera Mae's is the exception! Their basil lemon drop is heavenly and unlike any alcoholic beverage I've ever had, the spinach wontons are literal perfection and melted in my mouth, and their crusted cod was the most flavorful fish meal . Muncie's only fine dining option, VM's claims to emulate quaint European bistros. I don't know about that, but expect fresh fish, fillet mignon, and veal. The menu changes several times a year, but holdovers like chicken brie w/ raspberry, classic French onion soup, and delish crab cakes remain constant. Lunches tend to be sandwich driven. The high water mark of VM's is the fact that the cook staff is Muncie's young culinary talent. There's ambition in the back of the house, and that's reflected in the creative daily "Feature" dishes. Soups and sides also are created anew daily. Veg options are on the slim side, but the pros can whip up some amazing stuff when requested. Beyond the food, the restaurant is beautifully decorated. The space had been two older storefronts (one, a shoe store, I believe). Patio dining and a full bar round the experience out. Prices are higher than other local eateries, but the quality of ingredients, service, and overall class make a celebratory meal here memorable. read more

Vera's is worth coming to simply because of the decor. Historic and vintage without feeling old and dirty. The woodwork around the bar is gorgeous and the ceilings are nicely redone tin. With the classic music from yesterday softly playing you don't even have to close your eyes to go back in tme. It is also clear that Vera Mae's has been instrumental in holding up or invigorating downtown Muncie. There is still a dearth of activity for a college town, but at least Vera's brings a bit of life to the area. This could be a gorgeous old downtown with the river and college nearby. I only give Vera's a 4 star rating because my Cajun Pecan Tuna was not quite what I was hoping for. That is, the flavor was excellent, but the cut of fish was a bit tough for tuna. In addition, it came out medium instead of rare (but somehow it was still cold on the inside...odd). Everything else was spectacular though - salad, red skin potatoes, green beans, etc. Just work on the tuna and I will go with 5 stars next time. Also, with the lack of fine dining choices in the area, I am quite sure that the other reviewers are correct...that this is the premier restaurant in Munie. My husband and I have been to Vera Mae's several times. It's one of our favorite places to go. The food is always excellent,the atmosphere is wonderful, and service is impeccable. This restaurant has the absolute best French Onion Soup EVER! We have both had several things on the menu, it would be difficult to choose a favorite. The dill crusted cod is always good. This past week my husband had the filet and I had a pasta dish called Tagliatelle Bolognese. It was perfection on a plate! There is a full bar with just about anything you could ask for. I have had only good visits to Vera Mae's over the years. The staff and owners are wonderful, the atmosphere is relaxing, and the bar is super fun to sit at and have a drink or two. That being said, even though my experiences are good, I still feel a bit unsatisfied with the establishment. My problem with Vera Mae's? In all the years they have been open, their menu has never changed. EVER. It's the same every time, except for a dinner special or two not on the staple menu. They have only one vegetarian option, Pasta Primavera, and it gets really old really quick. Seasonal vegetables in the dish are always zucchini and yellow squash. No matter the time of year, it never changes, and for this they charge $16, plus 75 cents extra if you want it with marinara sauce. The restaurant is one of the nicer ones in Muncie; the prices are on the higher side, but that is expected of fine dining. Vera Mae's is in serious need of a more varied menu. Again, service is great, the bar is fun, and the owners are fantastic. I just have to think the kitchen staff and chefs are bored to death making the same few things night after night, year after year. read more
