I found this vineyard on Yelp and we decided to go on a Saturday for wine tasting. [[HIGHLIGHT]]You drive down a long road in Johnston, wondering where you are, and suddenly you are at a beautiful, private vineyard.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have tables to sit and drink wine or have lunch, and a flock of very cute fluffy chickens that scatter around. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Some families were there and they had ordered a pizza to be delivered there and were drinking a few bottles of wine.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We opted to try the 7 wines for $12.00 tasting. The woman doing the tasting was very detailed about the wines and we really enjoyed listening and asking questions. We enjoyed all the white wines with the Cayuga White being our favorite, so we got a bottle of that to take home. I also enjoyed the reds and the rose. The owner was very friendly and loved chatting when we asked about the huge unusual tree - it is his pride and joy - a chestnut tree! We would definitely come back. Really good people and really good wine. Me and three others did a wine tasting that was only $12 each for 7 samples. I mainly drink red wine but I loved most of their whites too, including the Chardonnay in Bianco d'Amelia. The girl serving us was incredibly nice and very intelligent. She's only been there a month and retained so much information about the wines. The owner Jim is 86 years old and is hilarious. He was also outside tidying up things. You get a warm, family feeling at this vineyard and a little wine makes it even better. read more

Great way to spend some time before or after lunch. Was looking for a nearby place to do a wine tasting after grabbing lunch in the area. Thanks to our Yelp friends, we found this spot! After lunch we took a drive to a quiet unassuming winery in Johnston. Don't get me wrong, we were a bit skeptical driving down a sad lonely dirt road leading to the Verde BUT we were pleasantly surprised!! Keep in mind, we went at the beginning of the Spring season so it's not peak weather by any means! We parked and made our way to the wine tasting room - it's not as clearly marked but once you enter it'll be the door to the right. We were met by Jim, the owner. An elderly and whimsical man who is so proud of his craft! We ended up doing the full tasting at $12pp. Jim took his time going through every option they had to offer and was extremely open to all comments and questions. He showed us his method of smelling, swirling and tasting. We walked away with 3 bottles and a whole lot more knowledge than when we walked in. They do tastings Fri-Sun 11am-5pm. We were greeted by an older gentleman (I believe the owners father) & had a lovely conversation prior to entering for our tasting. The server offering our tasting was hospitable and helpful. The owner even talked to us briefly, prior to engaging with a frequent customer. We selected a bottle to share while enjoying the view of the vineyard. This may be my favorite Vineyard in the area ( I've been to 3). [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is a good one to head to with some friends, bring your lunch and snacks for the day, and just relax.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The owner lives onsite and I've been told-though I've never tried--that if you wanna stop by when they're closed just pop in. He's friendly enough that I'm sure that's probably right-but I'll just wait till they're open. Thanks to The Boston Globe and JWU Professor Cindy Salvato, we took a field trip to Verde Vineyards on New Year's Day 2023. They are currently pouring four whites and two reds. The red wines were not our favorite but I could see them being delightful when paired with food. We really enjoyed all the white wines with the Cayuga White being our favorite. We met some other wine guys who are going to educate us about CT and western MA vineyards. After a lovely and educational wine tasting, we took a bottle to sit and drink outside. This is a very cute and sort of hidden winery. We arrived on a beautiful fall day in the late afternoon. We hadn't done much research so were a little surprised we couldn't just get a glass of wine to enjoy. The only options were either a tasting in the tasting room or to buy a bottle. Since we wanted to sit outside the four of us settled on a wine and got a bottle to enjoy outside. The grounds were lovely and the wine was tasty! The owner was very friendly and loved chatting especially about his chestnut trees! The only improvement would be to serve by the glass but apparently this requires a different type of licensing. Either way I would definitely return and maybe try a tasting next time! read more

Highly recommend this winery if you live in Rhode Island or visiting. One of the best tastings I've had where all the whites and reds are amazing. I really enjoyed meeting the owner and his authenticity and friendliness making sure we got the most out of our tasting. A hidden gem! Great place to come for some wine. It's a small vineyard but the the wines are excellent. It has plenty of space to sit comfortably away from other people. Bring your own chairs if you want or sit on theirs. It's not usually super busy here compared to Newport vineyards which is always packed. Good if you like less of a crowd in a county setting. read more

What can I say that hasn't been said. Jim is very informative. I love that his passion leads him to want you to enjoy all that Rhode Island has to offer, by suggesting other local wineries. This shows a lot about a business. I'm a big white wine drinker, but always sample reds. Never finding one I liked enough to purchase, until today. Verde's reds are smooth and not oaky. We left with a bottle of Surveyor, I really enjoyed the Cayuga and Bianco d'Amelia. Highly suggest bringing a picnic when spring comes around. read more

Absolutely beautiful. I was looking for a nice vineyard to escape to for a few and I had to go to Verde Vineyards after seeing the reviews. I was worried about COVID-19 like any other person. However, the tables are all far apart from each other and the staff wore masks. The owner is kind and takes his time telling you about the different wines. I would absolutely recommend. Having been here twice with different people I would start off saying that the spring or summer season is the best time to check this place out. A trip to get here for sure we found ourselves going off the main road into a dirt road filled with bumps that lead into the woods. Trusting in waze we followed the road around the bend overlooking a lake. What we found at the end of it was a slice of wine paradise as it opens up into fields of those delicious grapes that will be turning into even better tasting wines. As we got out we spotted a chicken coop filled with chickens and chicks with the occasional Guinea fowl joining the flock. Now to the wine and the tasting. We were welcomed into a barn that filled our nostrils with wood smells and the feel of the country side. Greeted by an older man that I can only imagine is the owner we enjoyed two whites and two reds. As we enjoyed the different wines he had a conversation with us about history of the wines we were tasting along with how he has made his wine for many years. Adding a few jokes along with facts about the vineyard such as very environmentally friendly with solar panels and naturally cooling the wine we walked out with a couple bottles to commemorate the experience. I couldn't give it that last star because like other tastings I would have loved to add a wine glass to my collection and the rocks and gravel hitting my poor car makes me always weary of returning. When I do I have a blast enjoying a bottle of wine, with food and friends watching the chickens cluck around taking in the silence that is Johnson, RI. If you get a craving for food and want to go all out on all you can eat Korean than in the same town is one of the few places in the new England area that has that for you. read more

This was a very small vineyard but worth the trip! Upon arrival, the grounds were decorated for Christmas and there was Christmas music piped through the trees! The owner is a very nice older gentleman who is so hospitable. He is eager to share plenty of facts about the history of wine, variety of grapes, proper ways to smell the wine, food pairings and more. I learned a lot and got to try great wine! Jim is a wonderful, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, passionate vintner full of a wealth of scientifically-based information. I learned so much on the tour of his vineyard. I tried 4 different wines in the (beautiful) tasting room, and the tasting is a bargain at $3. I love the Cayuga White and their Surveyor red blend (Cab Franc/Merlot/Blaufrankisch). They have a red that's 100% St. Croix that I personally didn't care for but others on the tour with me were big fans of. I love that he's planting different varietals than average...not only are the wines delicious but also unique. It's great that a vineyard like this is so close by! Definitely worth a tour. You'll most definitely be compelled to bring a bunch of bottles home to share with family and friends and they'll all remark on how delicious these Johnston wines are! A gem. read more

He had three wines to sample and for sale, two reds and a white. All three were worth buying. But, we settled on two. The white, which he named for his Mother and Surveyor which he named for his Father. I enjoy wines, but I'm far from an expert. Having said that, I thought Surveyor was outstanding! Absolutely enjoyed myself! My Boyfriend surprised me with this trip on a Sunday afternoon. Full of excitement we were greeted by the owner immediately while parking. This was our first wine tasting at an actual vineyard. We waited for Jim the owner to come back and tasted two wines, learned a little Italian history of wines, and history of the location. Having only visiting Providence a few times, I absolutely enjoyed the politeness. We then toured the vineyard, learning the types of grapes, how they long they are fermented and processed. This is is one the most energy efficient locations in Providence. I could probably go on about how Jim was but I'd summarize it by saying he is awesome! read more

We bought a case (he gives a discount for a case). Nice stop for us on the way back home. If you are looking for a great local vineyard in RI, then Verde is it. We tasted 6 wines, 3 white and 3 reds ( cost is $8). We spent a good amount of time with Jim Verde, where he imparted his great knowledge of wine, history of wine, etc. there was no rush during the tasting. Go early, and hope you will have the same experience with Jim as you taste his wines. We enjoyed all of them, surprising for a vineyard in this climate area, a good distance from the coastal areas. Jim is very passionate and knowledgeable about all things wine. He is just a wealth of information and we learned a few new things from him during our visit. It's a really nice tasting room and a very cute vineyard. He invited us to walk around outside and check things out, but it was a super hot and humid Saturday afternoon and we declined. Unfortunately he was sold out of his white wine and only had two reds to try. I have to say, his reds were some of the most full-bodied reds I have ever had at a New England winery. I came across Verde after a recommendation from another yelper lead me to their page (thanks, Allison!). Yes, I was just as surprised as you are by its location. A gorgeous vineyard in Johnston? It's true! As you drive down the dirt road leading to the vineyard you are transported to anywhere but the town it is technically a part of. As my group and I started to approach the tasting room, the owner, Jim Verde, came out and introduced himself to us and invited us to join him as he tested the sugar levels on one strain of the grapes. Once we started to head down towards the grapes with him, other couples joined our now formed tour. Jim was an outstanding host and made the experience a fun and educational one. You know this man has a passion and he's ready and willing to share it with anyone interested. Post tour we headed into the stunning tasting room. I mean, straight out of Sonoma. We knew that someone as well versed and passionate about the grapes and process as Jim was would produce fantastic wines and we were not disappointed. After the tasting, we took a bottle of red with us to a picnic table on the edge of the lawn looking out onto the Scituate Reservoir. All in all, couldn't have asked for better wine in a better locale. Oh, and did I mention the vineyard is entirely sustainable? Jim doesn't just produce great wines, he generates his own energy as well! This is an absolute must if you're in the area! read more
