    Strong House Inn

My husband and I stayed at the Strong House Inn for 4 weeknights in late October. We stayed the…read moreAdirondack room on the first floor of the Rabbit Ridge guesthouse. The room has a delightful 'outdoorsy' decor, a large and luxurious bathroom, and a private patio abutting a little birch forest. The bed and the bedding were very comfortable. The common rooms and the dining rooms of the main house were spacious and tastefully decorated. The breakfast was fresh and flavorful, with an egg dish, a sweet side, and fresh fruit every morning. There were no choices when it came to breakfast, which may be a turn-off for some people. The location of the Inn with respect to downtown Vergennes is a big plus. Several local restaurants, many of the city's historic sights, and charming shops are one-half to three-quarters of a mile walk away. The weather was beautiful, and my husband and I enjoyed strolling to and through the city many times. We had a very enjoyable stay at the Inn, and would recommend it as a relaxing and beautiful Vermont place to stay.

Overall very disappointed. I am one of those persons who is ok with sacrificing luxury for a good…read moreprice. But this place was fairly expensive and far from luxurious. I felt ripped off, especially since AAA Automoble Club has rated this establishment with three stars. They will hear from me. Positives first: friendly owner/manager; pretty public area with dining room nicely furnished in old style Queen Anne and Chipendale; host provided a lovely hot breakfast; there were plenty of brochures for sight-seeing attractions in the area. Negatives: Sofa in manager's office was stacked with shopping bags and large plastic bins, making for an unfavorable first impression at check-in. Very small room furnished from granny's attic; the "twin beds" were actually a king bed whose headboard and footboard had been sawed in half. Air conditioning did not work (or was set at a warm temperature) and when we opened the window to try to get some air we found the window sill and window casing paint was badly chipped and should have been scraped and painted 15 years ago (see picture). Floors were dirty; white bathroom door had yellowed from years of smudged finger prints (see picture). In an old house you can expect to see door stops at the floor to hold doors open, but never before had I seen a fire extinguisher used as a door stop (see picture). This place is struggling and I am sorry to post this negative information. I would not have stayed here for one third the price had I known in advance.

I attended a wedding there this month (July). There was no air conditioner. It was unbearably hot…read more There were no fans in reception area that served appetizers and drinks. I became so overwhelmed by the heat, I had to go to my car and turned on the air conditioner for 10 minutes before going back in for the sit down dinner in another section of the venue. There were fans in the dining area but it was still quite hot. The bride became overwhelmed by the heat and had to leave the party for over an hour. She sat most of that part in the bathroom with her feet in cold water because she was so sick from heat exhaustion. The food was very delicious. In fact I asked for 2 pieces of pate, and the owner (who was serving) said no. There was plenty of appetizers left over before we went over for dinner. Dinner was served buffet style. The owner was slicing the steak. He ask if I wanted 1 or 2 pieces. I said 2. At about 7:30 , I went back with another guest. We asked for more steak. He once again asked us if we wanted 1 or 2 slices. I ask for 3 and he did not like that. He gave my 3rd slice from a discarded end piece that was already cut off and put to the side. My friend received 2 slices, one was also a discarded piece set off to the side. It was a wedding. I did not want to make a scene. This was clearly poor customer service. From the owner, no less. There was plenty of food left. Plenty of steak left. The wedding was scheduled to end at 10:30pm. All the leftovers was taken away soon after we got our second serving of steak. There was no announcement that the food would be taken away, should anyone wanted extra servings. The leftovers was Not packed and given to guests or the wedding family. There was No reason to guard the food from the guests. It was already paid for. The wedding was not scheduled to end until 10:30. The only thing that was free flowing was the drinks. I noticed that the bartenders marked down each that was served. After inquiring about why, it turns out each of the drinks were being charged to family hosting this event. The bride was gorgeous. Everyone made the best of this situation. It just should have been handled better. I think no one should have a wedding here in June, July, and August. Also, it should be established with the owners the the food is for the guests. Not saved for leftovers for others. Outrageous.

Been here I believe four times now. It's a hit every time!!…read more First time I went was on an invitation, as I wasn't expecting much from a brewery. I'm not too crazy about beer, and what I'd seen from the menu seemed like mostly burgers which I also find boring. Was very happy and surprised on my first visit to find they have creative and delicious cocktails, which are more up my alley when it comes to drinks. Also this first time, I got the truffle pizza, which was *phenomenal*!! Since then, have been back 3 more times, once for a drink and to try the cucumber salad, which also sounded incredible, to also compare to a similar one I make at home. Loved it!!! Then the next two times, went with my best friend. Both times he got a different burger, while I spent most of my split tab enjoying a couple drinks. When we're not trying to spend too much, this place has generous sides of fries which are also *incredible* and cheap, so you can fill up on those while enjoying the specialty drinks So I'd say it's really nice for all sorts of tastes, and has a budget friendly food workaround too if you're more there for drinks first, as I outlined above. Highly recommend, and can't wait to be back again soon!!!!

We have been here a few times and overall very good…read more The good: The food is good, typical pub type fare, good prices. The servers are excellent and friendly, check back frequently. Cocktail and beer selections are great. Five stars to the blood orange margarita. The bad: You can't make a reservation and the waitlist is frustrating sometimes. Parking is challenging. Also, atmosphere is typically loud making it hard to have a conversation. Overall, we like it for a quick bite and will definitely go back.

I'll be honest - I was a little nervous coming here. I actually visited for a weekend work retreat…read moreand although I'm not much of a camper per se, I loved every minute of it. They had several unique cabins on the property as well as "suites" with bathrooms in a larger building that also had a community area. The property is gorgeous with mountains overlooking the treeline, a large field (with Quidditch goals if you're a HP fan), a stunning lake, another community area with a kitchen attached, a barn, campfire area, and trails. There is something for everyone to do here but what I loved the most was being able to look up at the sky at night and see all the stars! If you're looking for a place to reconnect with nature, this is it!

We've gone for the family camp twice and we were there this weekend for their twentieth anniversary…read moreweekend. We are returning again this July. My kids talk about camp all year long and it has become an important part of our lives. We all love it. It's my piece of heaven on earth. We stay in the cabins. There were plenty of beds. Bunk beds and twins with a little piece that goes between two beds pushed together that eliminates that uncomfortable gap. There was plenty of shelf space for clothes as well. Some people stay in tents, others in the Eco-lodge. There are coin operated washing machines, which is important when traveling with little kids. We brought sheets, pillows, sleeping bags, lanterns and towels. There's no electricity in the cabins but there is in the dining hall and the Eco Lodge. You can charge your devices there and connect with the world if you really want to. We stayed screen free and didn't miss it at all. During family camp there are plenty of activities and kids go to Kidville for three hours in the morning. I love hiking up the mountain, relaxing by the river or taking dance classes. Others prefer glass blowing, art class or playing instruments. Activities vary by week. It's relaxing, people are great, and the campus is contained so I can give my kids more freedom than when we're at home. In the afternoons/ evenings there are organized family games like Quiddich and scavenger hunts. There's no pressure to participate but it was a lot of fun. The food is vegetarian and delicious. Meals are planned with kids in mind and there are kid friendly options. They even published a camp cookbook. For me what makes the camp is the people. Camp was built little by little and with a lot of love. The tiles in the bathroom were 2005 camper art projects, and many of those families return every year. The people who run it live what they believe and they are active in the community, they use solar power and they work hard to decrease their carbon footprint. A tour of all of the features of the Eco-lodge was fascinating. They run different camps for under served populations. Camp Kaleidoscope is for families with autistic children, Camp Outright is for LGBTQ teenagers and they run a camp for families in the midst of high conflict divorces. They don't shy away from hard situations. All families are truly welcomed and it's a non-judgmental, cooperative environment. Communication is real and the friendships are genuine. There is a bit of sticker shock but there is a sliding scale and I believe it is money well spent. The food is high quality and fresh. They invest in maintaining the property with ecologically friendly products, they provide a variety of activities for children and adults, and there are enough staff on hand to deal with issues as they arise. It has been an experience that has greatly enriched my life and my children's lives.
