Being a new establishment this restaurant had the typical issues of a new place. Things were just a bit slow. BUT our sever was very friendly and our food was very good. I will say the house salad needs some refinement it is way too simple for this style of restaurant. I am excited to try them again in a few weeks once they have had the kinks worked out. read more

We were looking forward to opening day since found out Veritas was being planned. We loved the food... service has a ways to go. We made reservations the day before. We came in jeans and felt we were punished when we were seated at at the worst table in the house. A table by busy kitchen doors that we basically shared with another couple. The service started out fast, but quickly slowed. We got apps and soup quickly, then had to wait a long time for drinks and entrees. The couple seated with us got their entrees quickly quickly. The server not very informative so we had no idea why entrees and drinks were so slow. The restaurant eing very new, I think the service part will improve... the food was a different story.... very good! Bread was great. Shades of Daryl's great bread. My wife says the crab cakes are among the best she's ever had, and that's saying a lot. My fried oysters were very good. They had a nice oyster flavor and were not compromised by breading. We both really liked the lobster bisque, thick and rich and loaded with lobster. My wife loved her blackened chicken tortellini. My salmon with béarnaise was very good... not quite the flavor blast I was hoping for, but that's just me... it was well prepared. All in all a good experience. We expect to come back, in khakis, and get five star service. read more

We went in for a drink at the bar and ended up trying a few different items on the menu, including a dinner (so much for our plans). It did take a little longer than I would expect. Veritas needs to work on some things. 7:40 pm decent crowd, plenty of open tables. Great atmosphere. The delivery of drinks for starters. I ordered a draft beer and it took 20 minutes to receive. 22 min to receive a burbon on the rocks. There were two bartenders moving slow at best literally doing dishes behind the bar. We were never offered bread, had to ask for it. Delicious bread! I ordered mahi cooked over fire and they overcooked it. Didn't finish the fish as it tasted like a burned tire. My wife's NY strip was perfectly cooked. The potatoe puree was awesome, the garlic rice was cold. Wait staff needs to study up on the menu and make suggestions to new customer as to what pairs well with what. Not real impressed with the service. We are not on island time people. Great dinner and service this evening. Chante was our server and we all commented on how amazing she was. I had the salmon that I just couldn't get enough of not to mention ordering the asparagas grilled. Perfect. They are doing a great job adhering to social distancing practices and asking that you wear your mask if you need to get up to use the restroom or when not seated at your table. Just what our community needed! Great ambiance, broad menu as well. I came to the soft opening a few weeks back, and of course because this is new, there are kinks to work out but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater! Veritas continues to impress us as a perfect place for a very nice dinner. We have been to Veritas several times since it opened a few years ago and have never had a bad experience. This week we attended the "Vino on the Veranda" event that is held every Thursday evening in their outdoor seating area. There is live music that makes the evening feel a bit more special. The Vino event is $35/person and consists of 3 small plate courses paired with wine. The set menu changes each week. Each of our three courses was delicious and was the right amount of food and drink. It's nice to see a restaurant be so creative. read more

The only reason for three stars instead of two was the service. Started at the bar waiting for our table. Bartender was good and attentive. After sitting at the table, we placed our order. I got the Ocean Angel hair pasta. This was with mussels, shrimp, salmon and crab meat on a creamy tomato sauce. This was disappointing with very small mussels, very small shrimp, and very little flavor. My wife hap a sirlion steak which she said had no taste. So. A one star review is important and impressively bad.--but this dining experience deserved all one star. Our meal was 150 dollars for the three of us. The drinks were well done and appetizer of steak skewers was good. Our meal from start to finish took 2 hours. This was some of the most absurdly bad service I have ever experienced. Incompetent. Slow. Mistake ridden. Bartender brought drink to table. Appetizer made twice and brought to us twice. 1 hour between soups and entree. 25 mins to process check. Food okay--steak was good. This place continually disappoints and the service is incredibly bad. Hostess sat us outside where bugs ate us alive. We asked to be reseated and were told the restaurant was booked. There were 5-6 tables open inside that I was on my two trips to the bathroom. Place sucks. Go to AKA sushi. Great service, cheaper, better drinks, better food. read more

My boyfriend and I made a reservation. We were seated at one of the tables in the back by the bar. We ordered the fries for an appetizer which came in this giant cone, which I thought was strange, but they were good. Nothing amazing and definitely not worth the price. The salad was meh. The bread was delicious, but we only got like two pieces and it was from a guy walking around. We didn't even get the kind we wanted because he was out. The entrees are where it takes a horrible turn. The steak, the thing we were most excited for because of the "aged beef"... it literally tasted like just a burnt piece of meat. No salt or pepper. There was nothing redeemable about the steak; I could have made better at home for half the price... We were afraid to complain because we didn't want to be those people, but we literally did not eat the steak and the sides were subpar. In conclusion, I wasted over $100 on this place thinking I was going to get some bomb ass Gordon Ramsey shit and I got a burnt slab of meat. Will never return and I suggest you spend your money elsewhere. The best thing about this place was the bread. read more

We decided to try Veritas for an impromptu Friday night dinner. Because we decided on Friday afternoon the 'plan ahead- we should make reservations' idea escaped us. We arrived around 5:30 on Friday evening and were told there was an additional walk-in party in front of us and so it would be a 'moment' before we were seated. One of our group asked if we could 'sit at the bar'. We were told we were absolutely welcome to sit at the bar. Our party of three proceeded to the bar where we were immediately offered water and a cocktail menu. We were unsure if we were eating at the bar or just having a cocktail and waiting for our table? We each ordered a different cocktail - and were satisfied with our orders. I'd read previous reviews and I wasn't sure what to expect, as far as service. I was pleasantly surprised; service was very attentive. For apps we tried the crab cakes and the rock shrimp. Both were decent, the rock shrimp was my favorite out of the two. For dinner we ordered steaks and seafood. I tried the mahi-mahi, blackened with the white truffle potato purée and creamed spinach The spinach was more spinach and less creamy - that's my only 'complaint' which really isn't a complaint. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. We tried the chocolate Pot de Creme for dessert at our servers suggestion and we were not disappointed. Overall it was a nice evening in an enjoyable atmosphere with good food and great service. read more

Valentines Day Weekend (Saturday night: V day on Monday) -Reservation at 8 for 2 -Rude hostess: "look behind you; you're behind all those people" -Sat at 8:30 -Sat in the front of the restaurant in very bad spot. Felt like the back of the restaurant as there was a wall between us and the bar and live music and other features of ambiance -Greeted immediately but no bread or water until 9 -Drinks arrive 9:30 -9:30 Ordered one meal but... STEAK HOUSE OUT OF ALL STEAKS!? -Second meal ordered at 9:45 -Asked for more bread and never got it -Waiter visibly stressed and frantic but very nice -Seemed to "give up" on our 2-top table as he was very attentive to a 6-top behind us -Cocktails were great -Received food around 10:00 -Asked for more bread to eat with the food and never got it -Restaurant & upstairs bar closed at 10:00 and everyone was closing around us -Food was great but not exceptional as their prices would suggest -Waiter boxed our food and I asked for bread once again to-go -15 minutes later we were given the bill and still no bread -Waiter barely apologized and said "you should come back when it's not so busy and when you don't have to wait so long and when you can have steak" as if it was our fault that we came at a bad time for you. -At 10:45 we were the last people there, finishing our cocktails Very disappointed with this experience. Being sat 30 minutes after our reservation and waiting yet another 30 minutes to get water is simply unacceptable. We expected to have a nice valentines dinner, eat steak, and maybe go to the upstairs bar after our dinner (supposed to begin at 8). However, we were treated as if we weren't part of the Valentines Day celebration; in fact, the Valentines Celebration was the reason for our bad experience. Others got steak and service, and because of their celebration, we could not celebrate the same. Running out of steak is understandable normally, but on a holiday weekend (especially Valentines) it's quite intolerable. read more

I'd like nothing more than to have a good restaurant in Jackson. Unfortunately the new Veritas restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. After the first visit with half the meals being poor we went again and tried different meals with the same result. So sad. The side salad needs good lettuce and a few added nuts and veggies. Less is more if the ingredients are good. The dinner rolls are very good but you need carefully prepared entrees to get people coming back. This place needs more reviews. It is the best "fine dining" in Jackson. We had a reservation and came 15 minutes early. Place had only a few people in there when we arrived, but we were made to wait a full 15 minutes to get our table, at a table that had been set and waiting during that entire 15 minutes. The only explanation we were given was that the table needed to be set up, which was untrue since it turned out that we sat looking at it the entire 15 minutes of our wait. So it was a bit of a rocky start. That said, things began looking up when our server, Johnny, arrived to explain the menu and offer his suggestions. We all ordered drinks, all of which were tasty. Next we were served warm rolls: two flavor choices, all hot and fresh. Both types were tested by our group of four, and 8 thumbs up were awarded. We ordered a sushi roll for the table as a starter. When it arrived, it was so well received that a second was ordered. There are several options to choose from, and honestly I doubt you would go wrong with any of them. They are making them to order fresh right in the front of the restaurant in full view. Among our diners, we ordered whitefish, trout and two beer/dill walleye. OMG was the walleye good! All were generous portions. Meals come with a house salad, but there are other salad options you can upgrade to, as well as soups. Most entrees also offer a choice of 2 sides from about 8 options. The salad and sides makes a full meal with the entree, and that gives good value. I left plenty full. The previous restaurant had such an open-cavern-echo-chamber vibe that it made conversations almost impossible. Veritas has corrected that problem, deadening the sounds and making the atmosphere just what it should be for a fine dining establishment. My wife and I had wanted to go to Veritas since they opened, so I decided to take her last night for her birthday. We were also joined by another couple. I have to say that even though I gave it a 2 star rating the food was fantastic, but the service was bad enough to bring it down to 2 stars. After we were seated, the waiter came over and took our drink order (we had 2 glasses of bourbon and glasses of wine...nothing complicated). We also ordered an order of crab cakes. After that he came by to fill our waters once and said he was going to check on our drinks (we still hadn't put In our main order yet). Someone from the kitchen brought out our appetizer, but there was no place to put it because we all still had our menus.....we still hadn't put in our order and still no drinks. The waiter finally came back with drinks as we were eating our appetizer and took our order. After that we didn't see much of him. Another waiter noticed that we didn't have any bread and asked if we wanted some, but he never came back with the bread. Our waiter finally came back to the table to fill our water and we told him that we were still waiting on bread. When he came back with bread I asked him for another glass of bourbon (we had been waiting for a while). The waiter left and about 5 minutes later someone from the kitchen brought our food. About halfway through our meal the waiter came and filled our water. He said that he was going to check on my drink (never came back with my drink). I finished my meal and the waiter came to clear my plates. I told him that at this point he needs to just cancel the drink order. He said "ok".....no sorry about that or anything. He dropped off a desert menu and never asked if we wanted a desert. The only thing he asked was if bill was all on one. I did like the food, but I was so irritated by our waiter that I had a hard time enjoying it. This restaurant is supposed to be fine dining which includes service. This was also my wife's birthday and I feel like she did not enjoy her night as much as she should. I will probably go again and I am hoping that this waiter was not an accurate representation of Veritas. read more

Food was awful, I go to alot of fine dining restaurants and thus was by far the worst, 4 of 4 meals we had were either over cooked or pure nasty.. they came with beans that were smashed up and appeared a week old. Sat at the bar and was a great time! Surprisingly good food, super chill vibe (live music singing a steady stream of nice 90s smooth rock). Great cocktail and wine list, Darren was a great server! I asked about the space (it used to be Darryls, which I couldn't place until I asked), and one of the servers gave us a tour upstairs - really cool space! Glad to see downtown Jackson with such a great place. We are from Chicago so have hundreds of amazing restaurants to pick from at home but we really enjoyed it here. read more

We choose Veritas for our anniversary dinner, and it was the perfect choice! We made reservations for an outdoor table and we were quickly seated when we arrived. Our waitress was attentive, and even recommended a reasonably priced (for the venue) "patio" wine that we found very refreshing. We were there early enough to take advantage of happy hour pricing for starters. The steak skewers were yummy and enough for sharing. Also, the French onion soup was outstanding. I ordered the filet and it was melt in your mouth perfection. Hubby got the tuna steak and said it was the best he'd ever had. This was the best meal we've had in a long time! For us, this was a celebration and worth paying more than we usually do. In this case, we definitely got what we paid for, and then some! But there were several less expensive options that we could have chosen, and probably will, the next time we're there. Which I hope will be soon! read more

Veritas has been our favorite fine-dining restaurant for years now. During the week my husband and I like to sit at the bar and enjoy a cocktail and light dinner; on weekends or special occasions it's our first choice to celebrate. The menu is small-ish but appropriately so, with a palate-pleasing variety. In summer the outdoor patio is delightful; inside is warm and welcoming. Over the years we had gotten to know a couple of the wonderful servers and staff which made us feel even more welcome. That being said, our last couple of visits have left us feeling disappointed, most recently last week for my birthday. When we asked about the specials our server noted they had been added to the menu so it was hard to decipher that they were "specials" - and they weren't on my husband's menu, only mine. Though the restaurant didn't appear overly busy our waiter mentioned a new chef and that dinner might take a little longer to arrive; we appreciated the heads up and didn't mind the delay (the delicious bread definitely helps!) however by the time our meals arrived they were...less than expected. My whitefish was lukewarm at best, no real sauce, with a spoonful of overcooked zucchini tucked underneath as the seasonal vegetable side. My rice, while tasty, was cold and hard/crusty at the edge. My husband's seafood pasta was also cold, lacked sauce, and the pasta was one giant clump. Yes, we could have sent it back but we were hungry so we ate some and brought the rest home. We were disappointed in that moment, but we also know that things happen, new staff need time to acclimate, and we still got our favorite Manhattans and herbed bread. And we'll go back, again and again, because we still love the heart of this home. read more

I have gone to this restaurant two or three times this summer. They have potential but are overpriced for the area. The biggest problem has been very slow service and marginal attention to quality. At our last dinner there , which was an anniversary celebration, I ordered a very nice bottle of wine which they did not present until after we actually finished eating dinner. This was after I even asked twice for them to bring the bottle of wine. The desserts were tasty but dried, not fresh. On the positive side, the main entree offerings, sushi, and sashimi are quite good. They need to put some time and effort into training their staff and monitoring quality read more

We were celebrating my birthday & based on reviews, we chose Veritas. The best thing we had was the freshly baked buns. After that it was a very disappointing experience. The service was very slow. We waited a long time for our drinks only to be told they were out of the bottle of wine we ordered. They brought a more expensive bottle without allowing us to chose one we might have wanted. This was the beginning of many "we are out of..." scenarios. There were out of filets, & strip steak, and only had ribeyes. The ribeyes were tough and chewy. It's difficult to ruin french fries and the ones we were served were cold and tasteless, like eating cardboard. We waited an hour for our meals which were heavily salted with soy sauce. It occurred to us that the salt was to disguise food that was not fresh. It would not surprise me if Veritas is not closing. We wondered if the long wait for our orders wasn't because they were at a nearby grocery. A single diner next to us grew tired of the wait and left before his meal arrived. read more

This was our 2nd time there. First time was just a lite lunch so we could check it out. Had crab cakes which were very good & 2 salads which were good. Not many people there on a Sat. afternoon & the service was very slow! Went back tonight for dinner at 5:30. We had trout & white fish. My creamed spinach was awful & the garlic rice was barely warm. My husbands potatoes were fair & the brussels sprouts were tough.At first They served our dinner to the couple next to us. We waited quite a while for the bread to arrive which was good. They take your clean dinner fork away before the meal & bring a salad fork for the low budget salad. The salad doesn't look appealing with a slimy dressing & radish slice. I'd rather have iceberg lettuce w/ a tomato, cuke & croutons. I ordered a drink & it never came. I only ate 1/2 of the white fish and 2 bites of the spinach. The waitress who was super nice did give us a free dessert for the mix up & then gave us our neighbors bill not once but twice. I probably would only go back for the crab cakes, wedge salad & bread. read more

Horrible service! Worse bartender I have ever experienced on sat. Moved at snails pace and was very rude. 8:30 reservation, had to remind the reception that we had a reservation at around 9. They said take that table . No menus or water glasses. Server comes by and already in distress as we do t have menus or water glasses. We order drinks and apps. 30 minutes later neither have arrived. We left. Asked several staff for manager. No one knew where she was in a Saturday night at 9ish. Food did look amazing. Service and bar side needs major improvements! read more

This meal was a disaster from the moment we sat down. After waiting several minutes for a waiter to appear we ordered a glass of wine and a cup of coffee. The wine took many minutes and the coffee even longer and when it arrived it was cold. Unfortunately, as was the case the entire evening, the waiter was no where to be seen. Christina the manager refilled the coffee which was warm. Dinner was ordered. My companion requested his soup be served with my appetizer, no luck. After we'd finished the appetizer and sat for a bit the soup came but with no spoon. Then came the entrees, however, they were cold. Whether they'd sat in the kitchen because of an inattentive waiter or the kitchen not caring how it's food is served I don't know. Christina to the rescue again. She offered to take my entree back but I didn't want a microwaved meal. My dinner was replaced by another entree which was at least warm. Subsequent cups of coffee were warmer and brought from the kitchen not poured from a carafe. This restaurant, while attractive, lacks professionalism and training. While waiting for our bill we heard complaints from 2 other tables. I understand this is the first weekend of re-opening but the lack of professionalism is not new to Veritas. Christina, the manager, may help teach them what they need. For now this is a shoddy operation, charging prices only a well run, first class restaurant has the right to do. Christina is the reason I gave 2 stars not the deserved 1. She was the only bright light in the experience. read more

I experience Veritas for the first time on August 4, 2021 for lunch. Me and two co-workers called in our lunch orders, which were supposed to be ready by noon. I went to pick up our orders at noon, and they were not ready. I was told by 3 different wait staff AND the male manager on duty that the orders would be right out. I waited 10 minutes before one of the wait staff brought out a bag and began to collect for the orders. As she was looking at the full order on her screen, she said "Oh, I think we forgot to put the sandwich order in ... I will get that right in for you." Another FIFTEEN MINUTES later, she brought out a sandwich. I was not happy at the extreme wait time for an order that had been called in with a specific time pickup. When I got back to work (my 30 minute lunch pretty much over by then), I opened my supposed Spinach Salad with Chicken that I had paid $23 for, only to find no chicken, no dressing. I called the restaurant, and was told by the male manager how sorry he was, and would I like to come back to get a piece of chicken. I could not at that time, as my lunch was over, I work for a physician's office, and I had patients coming for the afternoon. I was then told that he could mail me a gift card for $25 for my trouble. I asked if I could pick it up that afternoon after work and he agreed. I went to the restaurant after work, and their internet was conveniently down, so no gift card could be activated. I have tried calling the restaurant during business hours, no answer, voice mail is full, can't leave messages. This restaurant is POSING as a high end restaurant, but the only thing I see that is high end is the prices. Service needs lots of improvement. read more

Celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary last Saturday evening with friends and dinner and cocktails. Service was great, Everyone was friendly, no issue. Cocktails were great, met the sommelier. We ordered seafood stew served over polenta, and the filet. Both dishes were wonderfully delicious. Served just the right temperature. Atmosphere was busy, everyone was on top of whatever we needed. Great place will definitely return to try some of their other great meals. read more

Three of us took my 95 year old Mother out for lunch, and were asked by our very nice waiter if we were under time constraints. Being surprised - and ignorant of what that implied - we said no. I'm assuming it meant that those who need a quick lunch before returning to work were higher priority than we were. It took a very, very long time to be served - the longest any of us had ever experienced. By the time the food arrived, Mom was ready for a long nap. We were impressed at the menu offerings. I don't ever recall seeing Truffle Fries - or truffle anything - in Jackson! We all enjoyed our food: crab cakes, Poke bowl, Caesar salad. The Ancho Pork Tenderloin could have easily served 2. None of us had room for dessert - a first! The interior design is a complete and pleasant change from the facility's days as Otello's and Daryl's. Even the background music (Brazilian?) was new to Jackson. Highest prices in Jackson, perhaps, but great menu choices, unique atmosphere, and friendly staff. read more
