Dropped in for a late lunch on a Wednesday at Steve's Ranch Family Restaurant in Jackson, and it was exactly what I needed after a long drive. No wait to be seated, and the vibe is super laid-back--nothing fancy, just a classic, clean spot where locals clearly feel at home. My server was friendly and quick to take my drink order while I looked over the menu. I went with the hot turkey, and honestly, it hit the spot. The turkey was tender and juicy like it had been slow-roasted, and the gravy was rich and poured on generously--just how I like it. It tasted like something your grandma would make, in the best way. Food came out fast (maybe 10 minutes), and everything felt freshly made. I didn't try any sides or desserts this time, but I'll definitely be swinging back through if I'm in Jackson again. Was not impressed. Staff was friendly, but that was the best part. Meat was chewy and most pieces were raw or close, and i wasnt given the option to choose the level of doneness. Wanted to give this place a good review...I'm sorry to say that I cannot. The brunch buffet was subpar if that. Everything was dried out! Eggs, mac n cheese, bacon, hash browns, chicken, ...looks like the food has been sitting for hours. The waitress was very nice. The manger, also nice, did offer to make fresh food for us but by then we had eaten and weren't hungry any longer. Maybe if we ordered off the menu for fresh food it would have been better. Wife had the bacon burger and loved it,kids had chicken tenders and they like it,I had the French dip ( pretty sure they called it that) taste was great up until I found a chunk of raw chicken on the bun. when brought to there attention the first thing was "how did that get there" then the "I am sorry" is there anything else I would like. Nope if raw chicken got onto a meal already I can only imagine the cross contamination in the kitchen. I really wanted to like this place. We went for the fish fry and it took forever and the fish was eh ok. I was excited to see these amazing looking desserts and I decided on the carrot cake. As we were eating I was watching a waitress dishing up some cake and to my disgust was not wearing gloves and put the entire slice in the palm of her hand before setting in the plate. She served up 4 slices. I thought wow, this is another reason that Michigan leads the US in new Covid cases. I thought that maybe it was just that one waitress but then another waitress served up cake and did THE SAME THING WITH HER BARE HANDS! Gross. My familiy and I went to MIS Speedway for the Cross Country State Finals and everyone was hungary for a good sit down meal. We decided to try Steve's Ranch. Wow. Yup, it was good. Some reviews stated "Dated Intrior" , we found it VERY clean and comfortable. Our waitress was a pro at her job and very personal to make us feel welcome. Even ended up talking with a few other customers, because that is the type of place this is. Heck I have been invited to Tuesday Morning Breakfast with the Retired Crew. From what I heard, breakfast is amazing! We all had lunch/dinner. All was good. I will say the desserts are hand CRAFTED, not just baked by the owner herself. And she too is a jewel of a woman. The soups were also so good and even the blue cheese salad dressing was house made. I do not get to Jackson very often, but Steves Ranch will be back on my short list of places to eat. read more

Me & a Coworker/Roomate Stopped in on a Saturday night because as usual the 2 popular bars in Jackson were packed. While Steve's Ranch lacks in hot single women (why we went out) & a modern atmosphere - It makes up for with great food, cheap beer, and experienced staff. Me and my buddy are both so glad we finally tried this place. I am notorious for never finishing my food, yet I cleaned the plate and ordered desert. Do yourself a favor, instead of spending $100 out at the bar for food and a few beers, spend $30 at Steve's Ranch . I got buzzed, and ate food for a hell of a value. I wouldn't even give it a star My husband and I moved to the area and thought we would try a local place. Just don't. How about good comfort food? An open faced hot roast beef sandwich over steamy mashed potatoes and Texas Toast with a beef gravy smothering it all... or swap that to a hot roasted turkey with those mashed potatoes, toast and gravy? Sounds delicious right? WRONG! Our dinners arrive in monochromic colors. His brown plate and my yellow plate. Picture this- a slice of white bread in the middle of the plate on the bottom. One scoop of cold potatoes on the left side, very watery slices of processed turkey almost like a thick lunch meat that were hot and mushy. Topped off with a chunky gelatinous yellow 'gravy'. When I asked for some new hot potatoes, I watched and heard the waitress tell the cook that they need to be super, super hot. Quite a few minutes later a side plate of potatoes was dropped on our table- it's a super hot plate she said. Dude microwaved them to extinction, down to a burnt paste. I'm not sure where all the negative reviews are coming from. Fay the owner is incredibly warm and welcoming. We picked up coffee during a wake at the funeral next door and she insisted on us taking several slices of her homemade cake (8 layers and incredibly delicious) at no extra charge! She was so friendly and kind that we decided to come back after the service. The service was prompt, attentive, and not overbearing by any means. Our food came quickly and was absolutely delicious. I had the NY strip steak cooked medium rare and it was warm and tender. The meat is all grass-fed and locally sourced which is impressive. Also the tabouleh at the salad bar is absolutely worth it and not to be missed, they even have good olive oil to put on it! Cole slaw is tasty too. I think a lot of folks just wrote bad review because they aren't used to actually interactive staff and forget the people generally run restaurants, not robots. Fay even whipped up a quick Palestinian salad from a home recipe to tide us over while we waiting for our steaks. I'll definitely coming back when I'm back in town again. Tried to eat there after on Easter Sunday. We had a large party with us so we figured we'd call and make a reservation. Whoever answered the phone told us there is no wait. Once we all got there, we stood at the counter while the owner sat there and played on her phone and never acknowledged our presence. Eventually a host or a server came but was clearly upset that we we didn't make a reservation. She was pretty snippy and told us she had said 2:00 (about an hour from now) on the phone, but I could tell she wasn't who we had talked to. She said we could wait if we wanted, but by that point our desire to eat there had spoiled. read more

I ordered the wheel burger. It's a 1/3 pound burger with the works and it comes with their special homemade chips. It was cooked to order and delicious and is very reasonably priced at $5.99. My daughter ordered the chicken fingers with fries. I tried some and they were delicious the batter that they were fried in was great. The waitress was very friendly and our food was served fast and hot. There is plenty of parking spaces available and the restaurant is really nice and clean. jackson doesn't have many places for steak on a sunday. my mom lives in jackson, and were were going to take her to knight's or steaks eatery, but both were closed. online, steve's ranch had steaks listed at the top of the menu, so we went. it had alright reviews too, so we made a guess. worst prime rib ever. we all ordered except one person. medium rare came well. it was so dry, we had to wash it down with wine. the one person that didn't order prime rib ordered a new york strip med well. it came almost rare and burned on the outside. 4 completely terrible steaks. we laughed about the meal and paid and tipped well, but will never ever be back. the highlight of the dinner was the waitress who was awesome. that and eating out of a salad bar shaped like a covered wagon. love, juston read more

I am guessing that in its hay day, this was a great restaurant. Today it is dilapidated and disappointing. The owner Fay is warm and accommodating, but I am guessing that Chef Ramsey would have a hay day on 'Kitchen Nightmares' with this one! The soups were good and hearty. The salad bar would have been good BUT nothing was cold at 3 pm in the afternoon. The refrigeration unit must not be properly working and that is the quickest way to make people sick. Speaking of which, all of us ended up with icky tummys and diarrhea! The waitress tried real hard but was very in your face and some of her comments lead us to believe that the place was not doing well and that you could not tell the owner anything. On to the main courses: I had their fish sampler platter. All of the items were fried which I expected but they told me it was fresh fish. I was a chef in a seafood restaurant and I know fresh fish and this was not! This was frozen and pre breaded. Two people in my party had burgers which were ok but they did not order sides with them. They sent them out with fries and tried to up charge us for them. The other person in our group ordered a shaved sirloin sandwich similar to a philly. The meat was RANSID. We sent it back and he got a burger. I will note that it was the owner doing the cooking and should have never sent out meat like that! Disgusting! We got a piece of cake to go and it was quite good. The label said cakes by Fay. Maybe she should stick to cakes and stay out of the kitchen. On other thing: the story I was told is that Fay (the Greek owner) has owned 'Steve's Ranch' for 35 years. Unfortunately, it was terrible. We went after church, and when we walked in were greeted right away. She made it seem as if the brunch buffet was the only option at the time. Normally we love buffets, so it was fine by us. The salad bar looked decent. The hot selection, unfortunately, was bad. There wasn't a lot of selection to begin with, but what was there had been there quite awhile. The scrambled eggs, hash browns, mac & cheese and chicken were all dried out. The biscuits and gravy were okay; the bacon and sausage were good, but there wasn't much left. We tried our best to enjoy it, but it wasn't good. The owner is very nice but the food is not. I don't know who is doing the cooking but they should go work at a car wash. The only spice I could taste is rosemary, and if it didn't taste like rosemary, it didn't taste like anything. I was visiting my sister in Jackson and this was our leaving day breakfast. It looks like somewhere I need to go the next time I am in town, except for dinner! We had a great breakfast. Omelettes that were big and full and cooked just right. Plate full of potatoes and bacon to go with it, really was the perfect breakfast plate. The staff was friendly and chatty with us. Not a good experience. We came late morning on Father's Day and they were definitely under staffed. We had breakfast and the food was okay but honestly we came here because we heard d the desserts were supposed to be good not true. We share a piece of chocolate brownie cake it was horrible. The hostess told us they were homemade and we thought we tried it. It tasted so dry and had a freezer burn aftertaste like it was old and covered in chocolate sauce. It's a good reliable restaurant for getting decent service and ok food, but it's not one I'd recommend for people visiting Jackson as there are so many better local restaurants. read more

This place is definitely 1970's decor revisited. Clean, but the woman's bathroom was freezing cold. Wife ordered the chicken dinner. After several bites. My wife reluctantly mentioned to the owner the chicken tasted spoiled. I HONESTLY believe the owner knew the chicken was BAD. Fay asked several times how the chicken tasted. We've been here 3 times no..so it's not just a bad"day"... The first 2 times we were here the food was ok, not bad..but not great. The service was lack luster...but most of the waitresses are past retirement age..so just chalked it up to that. The owner is very annoying. She would stand at our table and try to make small talk. My husband has a sleeve of tattoos and she just kept asking questions about it. Fast forward to this past weekend and we gave it one more go. We camp out in this area and if the weather sucks we'll head into town for breakfast/lunch and that's what we did Saturday. The parking lot was not full when we got there which is why it was strange that it took forever for someone to let us know we could sit anywhere. A sign would of been nice. Our waitress comes and we order. My kids just wanted the soup/salad bar, I got the turkey Ruben and the salad bar, hubby got omelette and hash browns. His is where the they get their 2 stars. I loved my sandwich. The coleslaw was yummy and I'm picky on my coleslaw. The kids loved the salad bar, though I thought it could of used less funky pasta salads and more toppings for this salad. My husband hates his food. He said the omelette was. Wry bland and the veggies were not cooked. He said the has Browns tasted freezer burnt and were tough. Again the owner wouldn't leave us alone. Coming by multiple times asking us stupid questions and leaving you with this awkward feeling. After I meal our waitress seemed annoyed that we didn't finish it, asking multiple times why and if it's cause we didn't like it. (Guilty conscience,maybe?) We won't be back. Not good. Before they redecorated in 2008 the place had that 1970's yellow glass and smokey appeal, but now its just not all that good. Ate here once with my friend and thought it was a 2 star place, went back alone and didn't enjoy it. Looks like they put a lot of money into making the place look more modern, but I think they should have focused on the food instead. If you're inclined to try this place, I would recommend staying home and eating some cold cereal instead. read more

Awsomely Bad! Visiting from out of town and just made a huge mistake stopping here. Got the pepper steak ordered "medium", it came out very over done but worse, it tasted like they cooked fish in the pan before they put the meat in it. It was an odd dish too, it's served over rice, which is great for me because I am avoiding gluten but the peppers and onions are very crispy and the tomatoes don't seem to even be heated. It's also served with a piece of iceberg lettuce and a slice of tomato on the side...god only knows for what. I'd have sent it back but my waitress never came back to the table. I ate the rice, which tasted fine, flagged another waitress to get a second glass of tea and eventually just went to the register to pay. My waitress was there talking on a personal call. She rang me up without asking me how my meal was at all, she was still on the phone when I left. I'm pretty sure the positive reviews are not from actual diners but maybe the cook's mother. The salad bar looked very limited to me so I don't understand what anyone could have been raving about on that score either. read more
