I reached out to North Seattle Handyman and they had me scheduled in a week with a solid crew. Getting the bids and estimates sent over were really easy and they were awesome in finding a way to stay in my budget. When the day of came I got a phone call explaining some concerns that they had about the job and they offered multiple solutions. They were a little bit more expensive than some of the other companies I reached out to, but they differentiated themselves with their professionalism, prompt communication, and incredible quality of service. I'll definitely be hiring them again.

Breach of contract - He promised me a "senior citizen discount," which he mentioned several times. A discount would be a reduction in the normal price. Without telling me or asking for my OK, he removed part of the necessary work from the contract. Yes, he reduced the price a very small amount, but removed some of the work that we had agreed upon. After I got mad, he created a new invoice to get this work done. Only, he added on much more money to the new invoice. There was no discount on anything. He lied. 2. No refund of customer deposits - On his computer system you pay "retainer fees" to get an appointment scheduled. He does not inform the customer that it is non-refundable. I paid on April 20, 2026 $284.67 and June 29, 2026 $276.38 for a total of $561.05. He pocketed the money and refused to refund it. 3. Exterior painting - On the second invoice he charged $600 and left 1/3 of the painting undone. I complained, and there was no response. 4. He broke one of my phone jacks, rendering it unusable, and made no offer to fix it.

I provided the netting and some edging rope and he got it all done in about an hour and a half. He also was able to install the netting on the exterior side of the railing so my cats can still enjoy the railing, now perfectly safely. Kept to the same quote he gave me initially and also cut a window insert for my AC to size free of charge. There is a side of the netting that didn't have readily available cedar trimming to afix it to, so he made it taut to make up for it, and brought it in to the interior to give my cats less room to try to squeeze into it. I've realized now after the fact that we could have extended the netting to the door frame. I'm keeping it down with tape for now because my cats are naughty and untrustworthy, but I'm going to put some screws in the doorframe and secure the netting down with ties. I'll definitely be calling Jonathan for future projects!

Ilya and his crew supplied images detailing the damage the the plan as he moved forward, keeping us informed the entire time (as this was more of an exploratory style of job, since we were unsure how deep the rot would go). After booking my appointment weeks in advance (he couldn't get me in sooner than that?), he was a COMPLETE NO-SHOW. Apparently, even my texting him earlier on the same day of that first missed appointment didn't make him realize that we had an appointment that day. After he didn't show, I called him, & he rescheduled for the very next day (why did it take him weeks to get me in before?). And then he canceled the SECOND appointment an hour or two before the appointment window was ending, so effectively, a no-show 2 days in a row. (I had taken 2 days off work for him.) He told me he "didn't do" the floor repairs I needed an estimate of, though he had scheduled me for exactly that in the first place, & prior to the FIRST missed appointment, he already had photos of my flooring. Then he never texted back after just telling me he wouldn't help me. His communication was consistently slow or absent. One of the worst parts was that when I wrote a complaint about him on Yelp, he had the nerve to reply & say he had never heard of me & that we had never done business together, not realizing I've got ALL the receipts--incoming & outgoing phone calls to his phone number, and texts showing exactly what he said to me & when he said it--he even signed his name to those texts. When I called him out on his outright lies, telling him I could prove it, he literally immediately deleted & rewrote his reply to me to be all sweet and apologetic, which REPLACED the answer where he basically called me a liar & said he had no idea who I was and that we had never been in contact. (He replied that to someone else awhile back, too. Makes me think that was a lie as well.) Ilya is a DOUBLE NO-SHOW, an outright liar, & a real piece of work. SUPER shady. Especially so, since he did a terrific job for us, and I am more than pleased with the outcome. After getting a quick response from Andy, he came to the house and reviewed the project. He promptly responded with an estimate of the work to be done, and communicated well about setting a time to do the work. It involved installing a replacement front door and the work took about 5 hours to complete. He came well prepared with all the tools, was 100% professional in his manner and workmanship, and clearly knew his business. He did the work for the estimate provided, cleaned up after himself (sanding dust, shavings, etc.), and left nothing undone. I would strongly recommend Andy and his company for any future work, and would use him again without hesitation.

His estimates were detailed and extremely thorough. I could tell that Andy had studied the drawings and had a complete grasp of the scope so I was very comfortable that the work would be done per my expectations. I was further pleased to find that his carpentry is excellent - I am an architect who has been working in the industry for over 20 years and it's obvious that Andy is not only well-trained, but that he cares deeply for craftsmanship. I acknowledge that I am probably one of the most difficult clients to please and I was beyond happy with the final product. The entire process from start to finish went as smoothly as any construction project could go. The jobsite was always spotless and all tools were packed up neatly at the end of the day. I could not recommend Stern Carpentry & Construction enough.
