On this episode of eating my way through Randolph, NJ, we're stopping at one of my wife's and my absolute favorites -- Verona. This small Italian spot has become our go-to local restaurant, and for good reason. The food? Consistently hot, fresh, and packed with flavor. We've ordered just about everything on the menu at this point, but some of our staples keep us coming back: the eggplant rollatini, the mussels, and especially the fettuccine Alfredo with shrimp, which always hits. Whatever fish they have on the menu is usually a safe bet too -- fresh and well-prepared every time. They've also catered multiple events for us, and what impressed me most is that even the bulk catering orders tasted just as good as dining in -- same quality, same care, nothing felt rushed or watered down. Pro tip: It's BYOB. Bring your favorite bottle, or if you forget, there's a spot just a quarter mile down the road to grab something and circle right back. If there's one area they could grow in, it's customer service. While the staff is attentive, they don't always come across as the warmest or friendliest, even though we've eaten there at least seven times this year. But when it comes to food, Verona delivers -- quality Italian dishes every time. Verdict: One of the best local spots around. Worth every visit. I eat, I judge. Great food we had to come back for First visit was with a gift card -- Buffala Mozzarella, Beet and Goat Cheese Salad, Chicken Scarpariello for me, salmon for my husband. Everything was fresh and delicious. I was looking forward to my leftovers, but my husband ate them, so we went back with our sons. The decor was great. Our first time here and there was no wait. We were not aware you can bring your own bottle of wine. However, we ordered our favorite sparkling water. We ordered chicken Milanese and pasta with Italian sausage. All was very well done and seasoned. The waitstaff were very nice and professional. We had ricotta cheesecake and coffee for dessert. The ricotta cheesecake was delicious! This was our first time having ricotta cheesecake. All in all, our experience was amazing. Verona Restaurant will see us again. read more

61 years, this is a first, we go early to dinner mostly, we arrived at Verona, one of our top ten regular restaurants, today we were greeted by Tim, the host, and he said we needed to hurry up and eat because he had a 6:00 reservation, in the entire restaurant, one table had guests. The service from the cook and waiter was great, the ambiance didn't exist, too annoyed for that, the food was fabulous, like always, but Tim.....you ruined it, we will never be back, I actually suggested we go to Rosie's Trattoria after your rudeness, we are now also going to Cliffs for our dessert. You should not have that job or position. You were rude, and you cost your establishment, unhappy customers, and hope many read this. Tim = Bad for business. It's been a few years since my wife and I last dined at Verona. This past week, we decided to stop in again. The Prix Fixe menu is no longer offered on weekdays which is too bad since it was very good. The restaurant itself though is still very nice with a good Italian menu. We started off with the Mozzarella Carrozza appetizer. Dipping this into the tomato sauce was very good. I ordered the Fettuccine Bolognese and my wife had the Chicken Verona. While the fettuccine was good, she made the better choice. We topped off the meal with cappuccinos and homemade tiramisu. The tiramisu was fantastic, I'd definitely recommend ordering it if you dine here. There was a good crowd here on a Thursday night, so I'd suggest you make a reservation if headed here. read more

A hidden gem. Located in a small strip mall with a less than inviting look, but once inside that all changes. Larger inside than it appears and decorated with simple elegance. Staff was attentive without feeling rushed. Burrata salad was excellent, as was the salmon entree. My partner had the risotto with steak tips that was also a hit. Here's the deal: This BYOB is at the end of a small strip of stores. It has both indoor & outdoor seating. I was here 7-8 years ago and I left feeling the same way as I did then. It's definitely a good spot for a group, but the ambiance doesn't scream romantic "date night" place. They serve all the standard dishes! The chili calamari was chewy $17.00. The regular calamari is $13.00 .. not sure the addition of hot vinegar peppers made it special? The special Parma crusted chicken w/ lemon was just "ok". But for $30.00 I hoped for more. The Veal Sorantino $28.00 was good (a staple item well done! ) For dessert the Bread Pudding was very good! So overall the I guess this place does consist business, so it's doing something right. read more

This is by far the best restaurant in Randolph. My husband and I moved from Manhattan and were really struggling to find quality food. So glad we came across this golden gem. The calamari was great (perfectly fried, light and crispy). The duck ragu was spectacular. Braised duck over risotto sticks and a carrot ginger puree. Such a wonderful combination! Another great meal here. It's a great BYOB with very reasonable prices. Usually get there early between 5-6 so no real crowds to deal with. It's not a large restaurant maybe 14 tables in the main section with a half wall sectioning off a smaller room that is used for both dining and separate parties. Love the specials here almost always go with their soup or appetizer, but the main menu is also terrific, my wife always has the fish and I'm usually a chicken dish, which is prepared in multiple ways...and all good. read more

This is my mom's favorite, and for what's available nearby, I get it! The restaurant developed a beautiful outdoor dining space over the last few years, which is pretty pleasant and romantic. It is BYOB but there is a liquor store just a minute uo the road. During my first visit I wasn't hooked, but since my parents like it so much we went again and this experience was completely different! My mom swears by the bolognese, and I absolutely loved the eggplant rollatini appetizer (which was big enough to be an entree!) The mussels appetizer was also good. Developed heartburn. Had mussels - more sauce than mussels, more shells than meat, small meat. Had Caesar salad - very small portions and nothing special. Had fish (on special) - flour coated and bland, on a plate with asparagus and some light sauce, and no starch of any kind. Service - big thumbs in the dishes when brought to the table. I can't say enough about the wonderful experience we had at Verona Restaurant for my dad's Ninetieth birthday party! The food was world-class and every single dish was raved upon by our guests. The service was also flawless and all staff were attentive and responsive to our every request. We have held many of these events over the years but since this event the phone has rang off the hook. Every guest praised every aspect of the event which is very significant considering how picky some of them can be. Nothing but praise has been forthcoming with the food being the showstopper. All of the many dishes were fresh, high quality and beautifully presented!!! We've been going to Verona for years now and this place has some of the best & consistent Italian food around... Unfortunately the staff ruins the experience. The staff is also consistent - unfriendly and almost rude. Not a smile, hello, welcome, good evening, or thank you...they sit you at your table and then you wait for the same rude waiter (you know who I am talking about if you've been there) that's been there for years - or any of the other staff actually - ask you, "what'll you have?" Again, no welcome, hello, etc. I even asked "aren't you going to mention the specials?" and his rely was a stern "they're in the menu" without making even eye contact. Someone needs to teach the staff that being polite, friendly and courteous (or even just a smile/hello) is just as important as serving good food. My wife and I were so impressed when we went to Verona years ago and the place hasn't changed much. The Fusilli Calabrese is outstanding (I got it with broccoli instead of broccoli rabe). The pasta is perfectly cooked and there is a decent amount of sausage and vegetable. My wife ordered the Fettuccine Bolognese. The portions are decent and the prices are reasonable. The food is always great at Verona, but if you're looking for outdoor dining this is probably not the place. They have a serious gnat issue that ruins the experience.
